My problem is the actual character models. The characters when standing around and doing nothing actually look like robots and not living creatures. NPCs seem dead inside. I doubt it would take too much effort to have an npc gasp or cup their hands around their mouthes shouting for help when they offer a quest. Instead, NPCs stand there with their arms dangling beside them waiting for you to talk to them. When you talk to them you find out that their kids were abducted by a vampire cult and the entire life savings were stolen and maybe the vampires are planning to take over the city hubs and eventually the world if I don't step in and do something to help.... all while their arms idly hang beside them.
Maybe I just need a little bit emotion from the characters I interact with.

I read the review and it pretty much sums up the VG experience. I too feel this game is the true spiritual successor to original EQ.
Well written! |

In my opinion, VG is the best PvE game on the market. It's 3 complete games in one (adventuring, crafting and diplomacy). For one person to get a character to level 50 in each, it would take a huge time investment that could keep a gamer happy for a very long time.
in my opinion, the best thing that could ever happen to VG would be for SOE to cut support for the game. If this were to happen, I truly believe we'd see something like what happened to Horizons - a third party come in and buy the IP and re-launch as something new (Vanguard: Chronicles of the Gifted maybe?).
Unfortunately, as stated above, VG is too much competition for EQII so SOE will sit on it and babysit it to ensure it has enough to keep those craving old EQ-like adventures happy while ensuring it doesn't change enough to draw players from EQII.
I wish Sony would let it die so some other company could come and rebrand it. Compared to today's MMO games the land is still varied and beautiful, the creatures look good, and the character animations are fantastic. I would like to see the character models themselves get a real revamp but I can live with the beefed up look they have now. We just need a new company to come and re-release the game... a company that doesn't have a 10-year old IP to protect like EQ. |

WoW customer service vs LOTRO customer service.
General Discussion « Lord of the Rings Online 3/22/09 2:59:09 AM
WoW lost me when they gave me three 3-day suspensions in a one month period due to using Curse Gaming's approved addons. When I asked Blizzard support which addon was the problem they told me using any third party addon was a violation of EULA. I could not determine the specific addon and so I had to stop using all WoW addons, and as we know the game is unplayable with the default UI.
While LOTRO addons are sparce, the built in UI offers every thing needed to enjoy the game well into the level 40's. LOTRO has been nothing but great support and community for me so far. |

it is very easy. and there are many guides online I think your best bet is a pre-built. Anyone who says not to already has the know-how to build one. Pre-build PCs are great because they will give someone like you a much needed overall upgrade.
Consider the following (which is a tower that is currently offered at Best Buy):
Base Features
So this tower does a couple things for you. It upgrades your RAM, gets you a dual core processor, a larger, faster hard drive and, at $349, would allow you to upgrade to an even better video card for about $80. For under $500 you have a system that is upgradable. Oh, most on-board sound is also 7.1 Surround nowadays so you'd upgrade to good sound too. Chances are, your old system isn't capable of handling most of the laymen-type upgrades available. Your old PC probably can't handle newer RAM speeds and sizes, probably won't have a PCI-e slot for a vid card and probably won't have the power connectors for SATA drives. Buying the above pre-built will ensure that you can upgrade it for the next couple years to come. You have the monitor and keyboard/mouse now, so a tower is all you need. I used to be an upgrade junkie with my kids' computers but honestly I have witnessed the difference a totally new tower can do.

Can you honestly say you found something to keep you entertained during that 18 months before the Burning Crusade was released? WOW has like, a handful of places to grind out day after day after day after day after day after - you get the picture. EQ expansions always added to my variety and made playing a game less tedious than game play should be. Think about the size of any EQ expansion and name me one game (besides LOTRO or Vanguard) that gives away that amount of content (zones/new mobs/loot/innovation) for free on a reguar basis. How many free zones did WOW ever give away? 5 maybe? And the loot is all still basically 'Something Something of The Boar or Monkey' or whatever.

We should be thinking alike on this matter, not fighting. It boggles my mind that people will defend an inferior product when confronted on it. Seriously, dude... jump into any game and start complaining or critiquing or pointing out bugs that everyone is already aware of and have probably heard about a half million times... WOW /WAR/LOTRO players would all do the same. This isn't a VG attitude... it's every game's attitude. Every game has griefers and complainers... the biggest complaint I have is for anyone who is a complainer that keeps playing. Cancel is an easy thing to do for most games.
I didn't go in the game looking for the bad. Why the hell would I pay to do that? No, I went in the game to play it and have fun. I am a community oriented person, and love to group up, and chat. However, while I'm having fun and chatting I come across some obvious bugs and then I mention them on chat, I shouldn't get slammed for it, people should acknowledge them to the player, so the player isn't thinking he's the only person who notices the game is buggy. You are talking about Vanguard here... released in an extremely buggy state and was still buggy as hell up to a few months ago where the game is now at a release-state. Just think - whatever it is you need to point out has been pointed out tons before you and will be pointed out tons after you. Report your bugs through the in-game tool like bugs are supposed to be reported. Also, the tone of someone's 'bitching' goes a long way to getting sympathy from other players. If you say, "This game is full of bugs ... I like WOW better" you will be met with hostility (in ANY game). If you were to say, "Does anyone know if quest X is bugged?" you would have been better received.
Why should a person want the community to sympathize with them concerning the current state of the game? Because it shows that the community cares enough about the game to want it to be fixed and polished. Being fixed and polished ensures a good future for the game, so that the new person in the community doesn't feel like they are wasting their time playing the game. Why is it a waste of time to play a game that has problems and has a small community? Because SOE has shown that they will completely revamp the game into nothingless if it doesn't perform to their expectations. SOE has shown that it will revamp THEIR games into nothingness. Just because VG is under the SOE banner does not mean they are going to change anything. SOE seems to tinker with their bread and butter while letting the black sheep (VG) do their own thing. I know it makes no sense but that's how they roll.
So yes, I was looking for support from the community on my bad experience with the bugs in the game. It shows that I'm not alone in my viewpoints and that the game might have a future. People argue that every game has bugs, but no other game I've tried has bugs so obvious and long lasting that I've tried, and I've played almost every P2P game out there. True, but in the same breath I have never seen a developer create an area in a game and then ban people for trying to reach that area (Blizzard used to swing the ban-hammer every time someone tried getting into Old Ironforge or up into the Dwarf Airstrip - why tempt players if you don't want them there? That seems messed up).
Every game has bugs, but it's how the devs approach those bugs and how fast they fix them that show the community that they care. Even WoW has bugs, but they aren't easy to find and when you do find them, the devs fix them up. Quality is just as important as a long list of features. I think Vanguard is a beautiful game and a lot of fun. Hell, I was rooting for the game while it was in development. I couldn't contain my excitement, because that's how good the game sounded on paper. After playing it, the game delivers on what I expected, but the problems the game has stick out like a sore thumb. Maybe it doesn't bother the VG community, but it bothers me. You also forget that any bug in Vanguard will be reported an minutely small amount of times compared to a bug in WOW. With 10 million players a specific bug will get reported 1000 times more frequently than in VG. Reporting frequency is why bugs don't get fixed in VG. From my experience in VG, the big majority of bugs are all found up to around lvl 15. After that, the bugs start getting fewer and farther between. I have a couple lvl 50 characters and can honestly say the bugs at end game are near non-existant. This is due to the devs fixing the bugs that get reported most - namely the end-game bugs. Low level bugs don't get reported because you hammer through the first 20 levels so fast players find it a pointless exercise to bother reporting them.
Now please, don't argue my viewpoint on this, because it won't change. If you want to tell mmorpg.com readers that VG is bugfree and performance is great, and the population is growing and superfriendly, then go right ahead. I've stated my opinion for everyone to see and if they still wish to play the game, then fine, who am I to stop them. I just think it's fair that readers hear as many opinions as people care to give. Especially when the game has such a bad wrap. The game does have a bad reputation. I agree. You also state that VG is a beautiful game and a lot of fun which I also agree with. Luckily the free trial can let everyone see for themselves how far the game has come.
Newbies should read the dev notes and upcoming patches and see where the game has come from to truly appreciate what it is now. The small dev team seems committed to giving what it promises each time a patch is released. From my experience, what the dev team says is what the dev team does.. very unlike most SOE actions taken against THEIR games.

Sure, politicians lying have much larger ramifications, but you aren't going to go to jail if you cancel your EQ2 subscription. Stop paying your taxes and you will. Honestly, any lie that Donald Trump has told has has less impact on most MMO players than the lies that John Smedley has told. Donald Trum has less to do with MMOs than the government, and the government will most likely have a significantly larger role in MMOs as more companies decide to go the RMT route. Congress has been loking for an excuse to tax virtual assets, and giving those assets a real dollar value will make it much easier for them to do that. There has already been at least two seperate bills put forth by Senators and Representatives. Sure, but the Donald's lies affect more people on the whole than the average MMO. Wait until Donald starts hearing about this WOW 'thing' and you'll see how fast he can move on the MMO industry. The only reason he hasn't is because he's currently frying other fish.
Your entire defense of the Station Cash system is to deflect to other, unrelated things. What SOE does should have a significant impact on the decision of SOE's customers to continue to subscribe to their products or not. What the government, or Donald Trump, do should not be a major factor, as long as the government is not directly affecting the MMO. In this case, neither Donald Trum, or George Bush have forced SOE to implement thier RMT system, so they are complately seperate from the discussion. If you can prodcuse any evidence that either Donald Trump or George Bush has forced SOE to implement the Station Cash service, against their wishes and in direct conflict with John Smedley stating that RMT will never be implemented in EQ or EQ2, then you should present that evidence, because it would be relevant to the discussion of the Station Cash system and its implementation. As things stand, Don and George are irrelevant strawmen. It's not defense... it's indifference. I could care less about the cash shop and will not let it affect my decision either way. If i miss my in-game friends/guild I will resub for a couple months. The cash shop will never affect that decision for me. I deflect to nothing... I only state that which people don't seem to understand. I want people to understand that the energy dumped into hating SOE and their shady doings could definately be better spent fvolunteering or something... hell buy a heavy bag and punch the crap out of it at night so that when you turn on a 'puter you don't have to waste energy. My time is too valuable to spend night after night arguing something online.
The facts are, SOE promised not to implement RMT to the non-Station Exchange servers, and then implemented RMT on the non-Station Exchange servers. They did so without even mentioning that their RMT system was coming. It was implemented without warning, and has been acknowledged as likley to upset a large number of SOE's existing customers. It has also been acknowledged that the Station Cash system is being deployed now to work out the kinks for The Agency and Free Realms, which means SOE has implemented something that they know many of their current customers will be upset by, for customers who may or may not exist in the future. The EQ and EQ2 customers are guinea pigs for the Agency and Free Realms.
Obee, you get really long winded when you want to debate something. No one forces anyone to be a guinea pig. All I have to say regarding RMT is no one is forcing anyone to do anything. As an end-user, customers hold all the power. it's pretty easy to cancel a SOE account (I do it at least twice a year). |

MoM Upgrade + 30-days free time!?

Damn me and my lifetime subscription!
Seriously though, that is cool. Turbine has an amazing thing going here. I wasn't sure about Turbine in charge after AC2 but I think having a failed (I think the first one) MMO led them to better decision-making.

TOR is set during a time when nothing matters except the Jedi struggle against the Sith. Lightsabers are meant to be uber, never-gonna-own weapons. Just like the Jedi class.

Disreputable marketing? Seriously? You nailed it perfectly... loot card gamble. Gamble. GAMBLE. This is what draws people to anything collectible. A baseball card collector buys cards as a kid because he idolizes the players. As an adult, he buys cards hoping to score the current year's BIG ROOKIE that he can put his kids through college with in 20 years. I used to distribute sports cards for Upper Deck in the early 1990's and I have witnessed first-hand what people will spend money on in the hopes of getting the special insert card. It's not just cards... When Superman was killed in the comics way back, the comic he died in was selling for $500 the same month it was printed. Today, the same comic can be bought for $5. I bought Bionic Commando for the NES system back in the 1980's (don't remember the specific year) for $49. Last week I sold it on eBay for $120. What's my point? People spend money because of a perceived value. If you know a card company was randomly inserting $120,000 original cards in a $2 pack, would your curiosity not be a little piqued? People add a value to the SWG in-game loot just as they do in the WOW in-game items from their card game. I'm betting Blizzard is giggling at all the tens of thousands of packs of cards being purchased by people looking for in-game fluff which will mean nothing 5 years from now when the game is on it's last legs. SOE is only doing wrong what everyone else selling collectible stuff is doing... cashing in on people's addictive natures.

Originally posted by ArcAngel3 What I want to point out with this quote is that someone has just spent 120 real dollars, for 2 virtual items that he doesn't actually own. This is viewed as preferable to spending virtual (not real) dollars for virtual items. $120 is about 8 months worth of subscription time. Just imagine how much virtual loot you could find, craft or purchase (for virtual currency) in 8 months of game time. Also, finding, crafting or purchasing items ingame can be an enjoyable online experience. How much fun is it to just hand over more than a hundred dollars to SOE in comparison? I believe that marketting spin for this game would like people to feel that relieving them of 120 bucks, for 2 virtual loot items, is doing them a favour. Again, it doesn't take a lot of in-depth analysis to see what's going on, to see who is benefitting, and who is getting fleeced.
What makes this spending any different than the people spending real money on the Warcraft TCG? I know my wife will drop $40 every so often buying packs... but she doesn't play in any tourneys or anything. She only buys the packs hoping for the in-game fluff items. She still pulls out some stupid beach umbrella thing she won...

Regarding the Smedley lies... the only reason his lies are so hotly debated is because they are public knowledge. Do you honestly think someone like Smedley has told a more heinous lie than a person like Donald Trump would have told in order to buy a nice office tower? Do you think Bush's lies are less damaging than those told by Smedley? Grow up people (not you in particular, Ursin but everyone complaining about the lies). Lies are told daily by far more important people than Smed that affect people in a far greater way than his actions towards changing your games... Was SWG really that great of a game? Ever?
SWG Veteran Refuge « Star Wars Galaxies 12/22/08 5:53:23 AM
Originally posted by tillamook During the first month or so, SWG was exactly what I imagined the Star Wars universe to be like. I would form up hunting parties with my guild and head out to Dathmir to hunt rancors. The greatest time I had playing SWG was during the first 2 months when 20 players would head out (with entertainers in tow) and hunt rancors. The ranger camps added to the entire feel of Star Wars. Player cities were also amazing, with some cities so advanced that you never had to go to one of the game's capital cities ever. I loved the community found in a well run player city, with real city design and an entertainer afk in a cantina to help you forget your troubles... SWG was a great game for 2 months. Then I was introduced to doctor buffs. This is IMO what destroyed this game for me. The game lost all it's SW feel once I could doctor buff up and go kill Nightsister Elders and Krayt Dragons solo. The Star Wars universe was not designed to enjoy anything solo. The first time I soloed a Krayt dragon was like the end for me. I decided to abandon the over-powered doctor buffs when doing missions, but something changed in me once I soloed the BIG target. I could never get that innocence back that I had before getting doctor buffs. Don't get me wrong - doctor buffs were needed to even equip most armor back then and was absolutely essential for PVP, I just think certain resource stats needed to be capped. This applies to armor and weapons too... you always knew who made the best stuff and always shopped there. I would re-purchase the game again if there was a carte blanche without doctor buffs. I can handle the entertainer buffs it was just the crazy over-powered doctor buffs that ruined it for me.
