ya but one diff, they are already doing a bang up job with the 40k license/IP, just look at the success of DoW...now Im not saying JUST because of their success with DoW they WILL make a great 40k MMO,but it does show their on the right path and idea. Hell DoW 2 is like a mini rpg/rts.

The bigger picture is the fact that mythic had NEVER done a Warhammer game, IF they would have done a DAOC 2 it probally would have done better. My point was that THQ has already done a good job with the IP and games. and agian not saying it WILL be a succes JUST because of that but imo give them really good merit in my eyes.

Amen. That is what went wrong with WAR, it don't have any Warhammer feeling in it. 

Also i hope they don't use the regular EQ type of levels and skills with cooldown, that also takes away the GW feeling of a game.
 

 

YEP have to agree, right before launch when they announced that each side would only have ONE city to call home and not their own city IE  6 cities one for each race/army instead of the stupid "Chaos are cool so we will make their city everyones city". Honestly  if they started with 4-6 armies they could do it with each army being its own faction, not all that hard. I just hope that if you pick for example a Spacemarine or eldar that you will be able to pick a chapter/aspect to be. lol 40k I think has every class covered where THQ/Vigil really does not need to COME UP WITH any fancy names for a class. And to those that say omg its 3years away why are you talking abou the 40k mmo one you posted too :) ...I could see if people were already saying the game sucks and such with your and would agree with your statement, But a lot of 40k,GWS, and gamers are excited to see something happening in the warhammer UNI aspecially after WAR. I know I have had the 40k mmo in the back of my head for the last year or so. A Real good Sci Fi Or a FEW of them is what the Genre REALLY NEEDS. The fantasy is getting to get washed up.

lets not forget that THQ/Vigil also has the rights to necromunda NOW that would be an awsome game as well, cydnie did a pretty good job on Blood Bowl.

Not to mention the fact that Screen Shots can only do a game so much justice. SS:3D game play may look diff the Phaser mite APPEAR to get larger in the SS,could be do to movement, effects a lot of stuff. and Im pretty sure the GREEN laser is the smaller ships. Oh and not to mention it is a game ,and some times to communicate TYPES of attacks in PvP, Pve or while in a party could be important to make diff. types of attack a diff color.

I don't think there is anything wrong for wanting to play the game only because it's Star Trek.  Yeah, Cryptic knows they will make bank off me.  And?  I will enjoy it regardless, cause it's a Star Trek MMO.  And ya know, the more videos I see, the more impressed I am.  The ship battles are impressive, and I have heard nothing but good things about it.  Ground combat does resemble Champions Online, so, I hope it moves away from that so I don't feel it's that.  But, yeah, *sigh* all ya want.  Ill be living it up and loving it.

Im on the band wagon :). No game can be perfect. As long as they do a good job of representing the Star Trek Uni it will be fun. To much nit picking, and IF it does NOT have this or that it will suck hoopLa.

I realize being a critic is free, but you skeptics out there need to find a place you'll get paid for it and just stay there. A good MMO is one that gives the tools to make your game play a great experience, not to hand you the best character in the game so you can pulverize all the other players. 

STO hasn't released yet and you can't wait for it to fail? Seriously, I don't go out to the Highway to watch Hybrids fail. I don't go to the lake to watch fish die. And I don't go outside to watch the grass grow. Either get on the bandwagon and spread news-worthy posts or get lost.

Yes it is to bad. I enjoyed the fact that it did Depict the Warhammer universe well,but it was more game mechanics. And by the time they started to fix/balance things out it was kinda to late..imo. When a game makes a certain area (in this case T1) free to play, and offers free transfers OFF 2 of the bigger servers really shows where it is heading,F2P. Honestly though I DO hope that Mythic can Pick WAR back up onto its feet,but all signs are pointing in the oppisite direction. As a though I think a Warhammer Quest dungeon crawler with multi player would do better.

3.  So what, Champions Online was shallow.  I played it, enjoyed it, and quit.  Disappointed, yes, but it doesn't mean Star Trek will be like this.  If you refuse to play games made by the same company that were bad, then no one would be touching EA games.  They surely have more bad than good.  So that reasoning makes little sense.

4.  Two years to develop = suckage.  No, not true.  How long was Daikatana in development and sucked?  How long as Duke Nukem been in development?  Time means nothing, it's what work is put into the game.  It will also take time to grow beyond that.  WoW sucked day one, and for awhile after that.  But now, it's a near perfect MMO.

Basically, if you don't want to play the game or think it will fail, shut up.  You are ruining it for those who are eager for it.  Yes, I pre-ordered, and I will buy a lifetime subscription if it's offered.  It's Star Trek!  All of us nerds are eager to be captains and see other captains and roleplay in those roles without being laughed at.  I'm excited, I'm stoked, I will be taking time off work just to take the game in when it's released.  So those with a negative attitude on the game, don't join!  Starfleet doesn't want you!

Lol I have tried and played a LOT of F2P MMO's as I am unwilling to Sub to other mmos at this time. And I have to say most f2p mmos dont have the most fluid running/walking, but ya just have to get past that. They are F2p. honestly though I dont think RoMs running is that bad...try Fallen earth witch is not f2p or some other f2p mmos, there is worse.

On a side note if you have not tried Chronicles of spellborn I would give it whirl fun game good concept, and good graphics imo. but everyone has there own tastes...I like a pinch of sugar and a splash of cream in my coffee,how bout you?

I agree, to much nit picking these days. me and a bunch of buddies plan on playing together and that will be the best part of the game. its almost as bad as people complaining about how slow lotro combat was. It honestly was not that slow..now compare it to wow or some other mmo where you hit 3 buttons and attack 12 times ya ANY combat is going to SEEM slow lol.

The Devs have to make the world.  The Story you make is about how you respond to the situations you are confronted with.  Traditional MMOs have given you no choice in how you respond to things (WoW is an example).  SW:TOR will let you choose how you respond, making it more of YOU making the story than any other MMO has ever been.

In short, I pretty much disagree with the entire thrust of your argument.  I think MMOs should have a story, and additionally they should let you choose how to respond to that story.

You see what makes an MMO great is when you do have a Player Base who is more then willing to put in the time in order to craft wonderful storylines in the game. Look at the old story's that the players made for the old MMO's like UO and EQ and yes even SWG. Those players put a ton of time and resorces into making something entertaining in the game, that in turn had more people see the story play out and made them want to be a part of it thus we had more people starting to role play.

When the Dev's make a storyline even in the case of TOR whatever you the player do, someone has also done. Yes it's not like Age of Conan where the story follows one and only one path. However how much do you want to bet that we'll see a Guide Book with TOR that will tell everyone the rewards for doing a quest one way or the other? How much do you want to bet that all and all it's just going to come down to what side not class you pick. Oh maybe the End Boss or the story near the end isn't the same if you play a Sith or a Bounty Hunter. Maybe the rewards will not be the same, but all and all most of the time it all ends up being the same.

Look at the reviews of Dragon Age, most of the Player Reviews have say it. If you play a Human or an Elf the start of the story isn't the same, however everything after the start of the game is.

This is why BioWare should hear out what Raph Koster said years ago, rather then coming up with a story to tell the players they should be just working on the game and making it as good as they can. And let we the players come up with the storys for the game.

I get where your coming form and not at the same time. On one hand it sounds like you want more of the pencil and paper freedom. I really dont see how a company/developer can do that on a mass scale. You have to have some sort of Structure in Video games or they just fall apart. It would be almost impossible (as far as I see) to make an MMO where ALL the quests and events were player created and hosted, there would be to much hacking and cheating. I do think that CoH had a good idea with the architect system they implemented, but this sort of Mechanic should be an option to Enhance your gaming EXP. . Honestly what you would like in an mmo a lot of us would enjoy but its just not plausable.

It would be a grand Idea to take P&P rpg and transfer it to an online video game where said person HOSTs the game and others join as Players and the HOST/Gm had the creative tools to spin his story along with the players...and yes I know muds do this but i was talking more about 3D enviroment.

The main diff though,at least from what we have all read and heard is the fact that you WILL have choices in the story line (alternative ones maybe depending on if you have a certain class with you) that may impact events down the line/later on. AoC did not have that. I think this is great, at least in Tor you will have choices to make..unlike most other mmos all the quest were strait shots no options,ok maybe one or 2,but nothing that impacted you. A good example that they have is the whole save the capt./kill the capt. . with this they talked about what MITE happen if you kill the capt., maybe a family member of his you meet later on will want to kill you for killing the capt...but if you did not kill the capt. they mite help you or offer something different. Honestly I WANT a more story driven MMO, to me it will only add to the atmosphere of the/any game. I have played a quit a few mmos and most of it is grab quest/dont read finish quest,continue on. But every one has there wants/likes/needs for a game so not every MMO will please 100% of the crowd. In the end if its not buggy as hell at release, and I can enjoy playing it with my friends, and other people online and have a good time thats all I care about..personally.

I guess the actual mmo part starts after playing a standard rpg game, I guess I can live with it, but to be honest I'd rather just power grind with my friends.  Sitting in vent killing stuff while talking about something else will always be better than any single/small group storyline.

 

Well in many MMO's there are Class quest a good example is (and yes I dare say it) in WoW there were the SPECIFIC Class quests for the paladin,shaman, warlock. I dont see how taking a more Focused aspect into each class will hinder any sort of grouping as they said maybe your buddy who tagged along will change the story up a tad. We dont know wont know til Open beta or way closer to launch.

All I know is if its a good game I will play,it does not NEED to be the next best MMO out there its star trek. and if it gets 200+subs Ill call that a success. to many high standards of "if it dont have 500-700+ subs" that its a fail. From everything I have seen it Will be a Fun game. These forums just keep getting better and better with the High standard whinners. Im sure I mite have complaints about it but who does not have ONE complaint or thing they dislike(ed) about a game.

And what IS so special about STO?  I've having a hard time finding out.  I could care less about the IP (sorry, despite being a part-time fantasy/sci-fi fan, I'll never be THAT nerdy), I'm just looking for a fun MMORPG, preferably an innovative one, preferably one moving away for the now very worn sword and board world.

 

lol, well I dont think with the mind set that every Star trek fan is nerdy, you would enjoy it. I could be wrong. but as for game options mechanics and such, not a lot has been reviled. But as you said im getting tired of the fantasy and welcome a sci fi to the table. and btw in know way with the first sentence Am I trying to insult you /bow, to much of that on these forums, just an observation.

I cant seem to find any info but a buddy of mine told me theres a level cap of some sort, unless you pay to unlock higher levels. Anyone with info, I would greatly appreciate it.

ugh lol I just bought the FF11 Vana diel collection 2008 (all 4 xpac's minus addons) for 15 bucks like 2 months ago, poo..if i would have waited a bit longer i could have gotten the addons >.<. Hell of a deal too for all 4 xpacs AND the 3 addons.
