This game is destined to fail.

The only thing that will keep it afloat is the same thing that is going to kill it- a diehard trekkie geek fanbase.  Every player has their own idea of what the perfect game is supposed to be, and every trekkie geek has their own idea of what IS and IS NOT Star Trek.  The more they think something IS NOT "Trek" about this game, the more they are going to dislike it, and the more it is going to be a flop (to them, which will cause them to tell others it's a flop, which will cause others to avoid it).

As I see it right now, the game is overhyped, and players are getting their expectations WAY too high.

>.0 as far as hype goes these days STO was actually not hyped (dont get confused with anticipated). But cryptic really did not hype the shit out of STO like some other mmos have these days {coudg..W_R}. And of course its going to fail in anyones eyes that sees it as that, hell they games not out yet, and every ones seems to have  a crystal ball these days. Just let the damn game come out lol.

cant remember where i heard it but this seemed fitting quote

"you give a gamer a pile of gold, they will bitch about how heavy it is"

lot to much, nit picking these days. As long as STO has solid game play/content STO will be fun game imo. every game you play there are going to be aspects you dont like or hate, you either get past it or move on.

I'm worried im going to spend way too much time on the creator, making up new races with Biographies attached. That is one of the selling points for me. A game that can constantly flush out new races for me to meet and interact with, player, or NPC, is a game thats worth my monthly fee. That being said i'll likely roll a human (lol), but that's because i want to do my star trek fantasy and be a captain in my image. Which this game will allow us to do quite nicely.

Im interested to hear the music and score's throughout the game. For a reviewer to comment on them, tells me for a fact that this game will give you the 'To boldly go' feeling.

Bring it on i say.

I can't remember for the life of me where I watched/read it, but I could swear I remember hearing about the ability to Save your Race and than upload/save/share it with guild mates (so you could say for example make a guild with the newly created race),and that way your freinds and/or guild mates did not have to mess with all the slider bar options and such to try and make a duplicate one.

Don't worry, you've not gone mad. I recall reading something like that in an 'Ask Cryptic' on the startrek online official site. That is a good feature. I think it's time someone sat down, and posted a 'features' section of the game so all these things that people dont actually know exist, get brought into the light, because right now it's like, "No klingon PvE?! Im leaving!!". Sure that will be a deal breaker for some people, but that's the way it was always going to be. It was always clear it was a PvP faction. For me, the genesis system alone is reason enough to pick up a copy.

I've been telling one of my some what not into sci fi friend about this supposed feature and its one of the things thats making her thing about playing STO :). also a good interview is with Morgan from G4's X play

http://g4tv.com/videos/42667/Star-Trek-Online-MMO-All-Access-Preview/

witch mentions a little bit about the Genesis system.

Great review. Is it just me or does it seem like the graphics are getting better every few weeks? Textures, lighting, shaders? When they do get around to releasing other playable races, I am pretty sure Romulans will be high on the list. And who doesn't want to be a Changeling? I'm kind of over Klingons, every time there's some new info or pics you get someone QQing about Klingons. lol *skip post*

Yes the graphics are looking better IMO too. "You cant paint a house til the foundation is layed and the walls are put up". Same goes for games in production imo, the mechanics and how things work are a tad more important first, then the graphics can start to come together.

Good article, I am looking forward for this game.

Looks like winner to me

It does look good and it will be a winner imo. as long as they have all the key componets in place it will be a hella fun game. been a trek fan for a long time and I cant wait to get on line with thousands of others who enjoy the uni as much as I do.

So I get the MMORPG newsletter in my eamil this morning and the featured "Game of The Week" title appears....

It reads "Startrek Online." Only the article is about Starwars Online. Woops!

LOL

Haha I noticed that too.

Ever go to a killer movie with some buddies, go to the video store with some friends to get a movie you all wana watch, Go grab some snacks and drinks before ya head over to your friends to watch the movie? I honestly dont think that adding a bit of story will ruin it or make it boring.  I say give it a chance.

I hear ya I like my action and grouping too, but at the same time MMOs at least are getting boring and stagnet with out a good story to follow, thats the whole point of emerssion, you mite as well take out the RPG part of all mmos for the most part. 3 of the main factors in an RPG (imo) are Questing/storyline, Leveling/advancing, finding new characters (single player)/grouping.

The PC VO is a potential game breaker for me, what if I don't like the Imperial Agent VO... What if I want my toon to sound European or Asian...

It partially ruined Mass Effect for me too, how am I to feel immersed as (for example) an evil black warrior when my character is always going to have the same cheesy american accent and dialogue....

Please BioWare, let us imagine our character's dialogue. Unless you want to  spend a few more years recording enough VO for us to choose from.

Very valid and good point. Would be nice to maybe have a few options on your characters voice choice at least. there are some mmos that allow this in a similar aspect.

I don't care if the game is solo player or massive, as long there is a plot to follow, a story, as in the other games (KOTOR & KOTOR II).  I played WoW and I watched that people there don't care about the plot, but the raids and doing dungeons randomly without following a storyline.  They reach lv 80 and the game is over because every mission is under your level.  I hope this game (Old Republic) does not commit the same mistake.

I have to agree, Just about every MMO is the same at this point it HAS a storyline with and with out quests that most people do NOT follow and just grab and go when it comes to picking up quests. I like many have played a good amount of MMOs 11+ :P and all of them have the same way or very similar way to gain xp. it old stagnet and boring, was fun for a bit. I think a good storyline to go along with you and the world will be great. I have tryed following some of the MMOs storylines, but when ever I quest with buddies they dont want to give you that extra 10-20 seconds to actually read the quest to see why the orc are being nice or why the nice elves are now corrupt,so on and so forth...really its all feeling like a Massive Diablo mite as well slap a Plays like diablo sticker on all mmos {a hint of sarcazim}.

I just hope at some point their will be ship to ship combat. That was another epic part of Star Wars. It does not NEED to be in at launch but in an Xpac or patch would be great. I know atm Bioware's main focus is the aspect of every thing being voiced, storyline,etc..etc. witch can be a lot to handle. and honestly (as ive stated in posts before) playing a game that will actually put the RPG back in RPG will be nice. Most mmo's...for me...are getting staggnet kill XX, Find XX and return XX, Collect XX to get XX. Sure the other mmos have storyline per say, but  most people these days are in a rush  to level and dont bother with the quest text, enjoyment of the game and such, its a give me give me got a go level attitude trend I have been seeing. I have rushed to many games (or been with my buds who HAVE to rush) and looked  back going Huh i really did not see much of the game content, or enjoyed leveling...get to the end and off to epics land :P. Now Im not saying that people who do the whole Rush To Level dont enjoy it, thats the way they probally enjoy a game. I just think there is TO much of it imo. Lol hell its starting to sound like some times gamers are treating games like they are married to it "this needs to change, this is not good enough, if it dont have this Im out of here, Its not Purrttey  enough, so on and so forth.

Honestly the ONLY thing thats looking to be TO BAD is the fact it looks like you will only be able to pic human as a race. kind of a shame too, with all the races in the star wars UNI. could be worng they may just be holding back the fact that you can pic from a variety of races...would be nice. pics are looking great too.

I'm not sure why so many folks are jumping to the conclusion that SWTOR is simply an extention of the Guild Wars style gameplay, or almost a single player MMO. I'd imagine I've read the same articles, and seen the same things that most have, but I dont think that there is anywhere enough information to draw any kind of conclusion.

In the past year, I think all we've seen is what Bioware wanted us to see, and that's what they feel sets SWTOR apart from games in the genre. Would you advertise your MMO as "It's the same as every other MMO out there, but just in the Star Wars universe?" Look, I've had questions, but Dana addressed it in his piece quote well:

Dana Massey:

He was also tight lipped about the other traditional MMO content, save to say that they do intend to have crafting, raids, and all of the regular MMO hallmarks. This last year has been focused on atmosphere, the classes and the story. This is their differentiator. They assure is the traditional elements are there, and we take them at their word so far, but so far it seems the focus has been on what is different. Once they finish with that, expect to see the online aspects rolled out.

So in year one of hype, we've seen what Bioware knows looks different than other MMO's, why not sit back, relax, drink your favorite fermented beverage, and wait to see what Bioware chooses to show next? Why not see what the crafting, raids, and "regular MMO hallmarks" look like?

  1. Why are there colored trails behind each of the ships engines?  I don't remember a time when impulse speeds would cause a visual like that.  I guess it's just for effects apparently since this isn't the first Star Trek game to do that. i guess because they have them in eve online

It has more to do with the face Space is just a big black void, the contrails are there to give a sense of movement.

I guess I can buy that.  Without the trails they would have to always have a point of reference to even know whether your moving or not.  Though like others have pointed out it seems there are nebulas' everywhere so no shortage on reference points.

Btw, not a virgin.  My Star Trek nerdiness came from pre-marriage years.  Ah the good ol' days when I could sit aorund all day and watch Star Trek.  /tear

Ahh yes the good old days...

For the love of god I hope they dont kill us with the cut scenes and voice acting every 1 mins, I swera in Dragon age, im finding my self saying "ffs STFU ALREADY, I WANT TO PLAY".  Bioware this sint a singleplayer game damit, where u can keep stopping players 24/7.  Ive nerv really been a fan of voice acting or cutscenes in games, other than the occasional one for a special event or something.

My god and they also give NPC's to aid you so u never have to group again.  GJ Bioware, why didnt u just call this mass effect 3 single player game.

Yet another whiner!

Guess what?  If you don't like BioWare games, you are not going to like this.  Pretty simple really.

There are plenty of people out there who love BioWare's single-player games, me included.

I play single-player RPG's for the story, which is something BioWare does very well.  To be honest, I don't get people that play an RPG and just want to fight, fight, fight all the time, I think their needs would be better suited in an FPS.

Up until now MMORPG's have lacked decent storytelling, BioWare is going to change that and I for one salute them for it.

HAL la LU ya! AmEN! can I get a Wha Wha! {does a little dance}. friendly sarcazim aside I agree 1000% They mite as well call MMORPG's- MMOG, cause they tend to lack the RP part and are becoming more diablo eskh. and ya the whole fight fight fight mantality I noticed kinda started up when WoW showed Up (key word noticed, and Im not flaming wow to be clear). I for one look forward to a game that people WANT to enjoy it for the content, storyline, adventure, and not in a rush to hit max level in a week or 2.

People said the same thing about Warhammer remember?

ya but one diff, they are already doing a bang up job with the 40k license/IP, just look at the success of DoW...now Im not saying JUST because of their success with DoW they WILL make a great 40k MMO,but it does show their on the right path and idea. Hell DoW 2 is like a mini rpg/rts.

Same can be said about Mystic and Warhammer remember? DAoC ring a bell? yet War still went -----down--->

The bigger picture is the fact that mythic had NEVER done a Warhammer game, IF they would have done a DAOC 2 it probally would have done better. My point was that THQ has already done a good job with the IP and games. and agian not saying it WILL be a succes JUST because of that but imo give them really good merit in my eyes.

I hope the keep the feel of 40k and don't try to make a "good guy" team and a "bad guy" team.  When GW does this for world wide campaigns it always seems so idiotic.   In 40k everyone hates everyone else and there are no "good guys" .  I would be anything this game blows unless they come up with some sort of FFA PVP concept like darkfall and eve.

Amen. That is what went wrong with WAR, it don't have any Warhammer feeling in it.

Also i hope they don't use the regular EQ type of levels and skills with cooldown, that also takes away the GW feeling of a game.

YEP have to agree, right before launch when they announced that each side would only have ONE city to call home and not their own city IE  6 cities one for each race/army instead of the stupid "Chaos are cool so we will make their city everyones city". Honestly  if they started with 4-6 armies they could do it with each army being its own faction, not all that hard. I just hope that if you pick for example a Spacemarine or eldar that you will be able to pick a chapter/aspect to be. lol 40k I think has every class covered where THQ/Vigil really does not need to COME UP WITH any fancy names for a class. And to those that say omg its 3years away why are you talking abou the 40k mmo one you posted too :) ...I could see if people were already saying the game sucks and such with your and would agree with your statement, But a lot of 40k,GWS, and gamers are excited to see something happening in the warhammer UNI aspecially after WAR. I know I have had the 40k mmo in the back of my head for the last year or so. A Real good Sci Fi Or a FEW of them is what the Genre REALLY NEEDS. The fantasy is getting to get washed up.

lets not forget that THQ/Vigil also has the rights to necromunda NOW that would be an awsome game as well, cydnie did a pretty good job on Blood Bowl.

Not to mention the fact that Screen Shots can only do a game so much justice. SS:3D game play may look diff the Phaser mite APPEAR to get larger in the SS,could be do to movement, effects a lot of stuff. and Im pretty sure the GREEN laser is the smaller ships. Oh and not to mention it is a game ,and some times to communicate TYPES of attacks in PvP, Pve or while in a party could be important to make diff. types of attack a diff color.
