You should be more conserned with games that do not have a free trial in the first year, let alone the first 6 months.

Your logic does not compute, its as if you see "Free trial" as "Compleatly free game we have given up".

 No kidding now that there is a free trial Im going to give it a go. Lots of people have been burned to many times by an MMO so are hard pressed to drop 40-60 bucks these days...its a good move to posibbly get more palyers..witch for a shooter/pvp based game is good.

Now you know a game is going down the toilet when they offer the starting area Free For Life {cough,War}

CO has a low population, most people dropped subs first month (i was there believe me) The game isnt popular, its more infamous in the mmo world. People who have played it know its bad (me) people who havnt heard its bad, it doesnt have a good name. They havnt gave good content since release, nothing that keeps you longer than a week of playing. Cryptic doesn't seem like they care, they just want money, period, and of course who doesn't, its a business, but they are takin short cuts and using microtransactions and shit.

 Yep STO was the same way about a month (maybe 2, super casual) worth of content. And couple minor content updates.Oh and the whole plan to make the whole Bare content repetable Ala Difficulty lvl..IE similar to D&D. But its a good thing NCsoft has CoX at least they put out Meaningful content for CoX...was my 2nd mmo..and I loved it!

Honestly they made there money back, or soon to,and after that imo they wont give much of a rats ares about STO and just do minor things to it to try and keep what subs they have. They will start development of another mmo, release it and do the same thing they did with CO and STO. as many other stated its pretty sad when an IP this big was given to such a closed minded and shady (IMo) studio. lets hope they dont get their hands on any other IP. Hate to say it ,but to bad one of EAs companies did not pick it up....

Yep Lotro is the only MMO i know of that followed the IP very F N well,honestly lotro does not get the credit it deservise. and ya I was hoping STO would be more than what it was, the space combat was the only thing..really that kept me playing it for the free month. The ground combat was flip'N stupid...ok the diff. between a MK II phaser pistol and a MK X wa what like 14pts of dps...um thats respectively a level 1 pistol compaired to a level 41 pistol. You have to make the players feel the differance...as when you were leveling the dps diff was only 1-2 pts at each Grade IE Lt.-Lt. comm.- Comm. etc..

ya lotro should be on the list too, But as with u i went with the mmo that got me into mmos FF11. WoW is a great game. People just need to stop compairing every other mmo to it, as wow was not the first mmo :). as with mmos after wow, WoW as well toke its mechanics and such from predicecors too, heck the whole skill tree was taken from diablo 2 :).

It's time for some fresh ideas on how to move the game forward again.  Repeatable instances(skirmishes), and more of the same, gear gating, end game encounters is not going to keep this game alive IMO.  I mean, what developer would read their forums and see that the player base is tired of doing the same things over and over and over again, then develop...wait for it...skirmishes, which are repeatable instances.  Oh sure they scale to the group, but beyond that it is the same 4 encounters over and over and over again.  Turbine gave the players exactly what they said they didn't want, and what makes it even worse is that skirmishes made up the bulk of the Siege of Mirkwood update/x-pack/adventure pack....

 

I have been here since beta and I am a lifer. I have seen some great times and developments in this game but that all seem to change with MoM.  The mentality of the playerbase changed then, as did the direction of development.  It went from a game that had many different options to achieve similar goals to one in which there was only one path(gear gated instances and the instances to obtain said gear).  The forums took a marked turn towards negativity where once there was always friendly banter and a positive vibe.

 

*shrug*  I hope they can turn it around and get it back to the glory that were the days before MoM, but given recent happenings I do not hold out much faith.  Turbine just doesn't seem to have the focus they once did on LOTRO.


 

unfortunately this is what a LOT of mmos do now, and what a lot of players thrive on, Look at WoW and the other games. It toke away the adventure and storyline to apease the power gamers (reminds me of the pencil and paper power gamers), GOT TO GET that next big piece of gear or epic..hell I remember even in wow (pre bc) epics felt more epic because they were a LOT harder to get/atain. I hope too that Lotro does not get converted into the NOW trend.

I just recently came back to LOTRO after hopping around trying out some other mmos, and I remember why I loved the game in the first place. Its got the epic story with some nice cut scenes, the world was very well put together, the crafting system is a krap load better than anyother game (after all the attention/revamps) I have played, I aspecially like the fact that when you do craft it actually shows you crafting and not just beating off in your hand >.0. /cheers

I was one of the people that gave it a chance and ignored all the na-sayers. Now after playing,over all its Starfleet:Legacey/Conquest (console games) with just more indepth customization. Dont get me wrong the Space combat was loads of fun,its what basicly kept me playing for the free month...well heres to hoping FF14 or SWtor turn out.

MMOs coming out will not be great or any good if the Publishers keep pushing the Developers to rush the product out into the market... remindes me of making food at a resturant: If you rush slapping the burger together its just going to look and taste sloppy, but if you take just that little extra time needed to put it together so it looks nice,it Will taste better. And that brings me back to FF14 and SWtor the 2 respective comapnies are know for there great products and accomplishments, I personally have yet to see a REALLY bad game come frome either one but thats just my opinion.

they need to take Bo's out imo. it was a novel idea for a bit, but later on its just tedious, not to metnion if you get on catwalks the get stuck and unresponsive.

Tried EVE and wasn't impressed.  Sure was very pretty to look at but was way overcomplicated for my tastes.  I don't want simple WoW controls but shouldn't need a calculator to engage in combat either.


 

Same here. I played EVE for about a month was loads of fun with my 2 buddies,but there were not manuals on all the stats and such for ships and the tutorial should have an option or some sort of tooltip info for items/gear,I do miss vanilla WoW IE;when epics to work to get so that they actually felt more..well EPIC. And ya you should not have to feel like your taking a college course math test too >.0.

Just got to remember its a game,an MMO,and you can only stay so true to a TT when translating. And with THQ/vigils track record with the 40k games, its looking pretty good...so far. I for one hope to see a Necromunda game as well, considering THQ/Vigil aquired the rights to that GWS IP too.

I agree. The whole point of an MMO and some online games  is emerssion,customizing, and feeling like your part of the world. what better way to do that than with other options and choice for your avatar/character...I have played a few games my self wtih player housing, and honestly really never seen it create what u say to a disturbance to the community Xondar. Maybe you just had some bad exp. ?

IMO, the new stats plus those two other stat things, plus gems and enchants is WAY more than enough for theorycrafters to have all the theorycrafting fun they want. There will still be spreadsheets, there will still be debate, but this just makes the game a little more balanced between good players and newbie players. The great players can still be great.

I intially jumped the gun :P but they way you and some others stated/commented. It does make me think back to Vanilla when there were not so many things to keep track of and it was FUN, did not feel like a math test in college.

I thought Cataclysm would bring good changes and i was planning on coming back..not now...toooo easy. and I like casual.

That's not even necessary honestly.  Every single job can do Campaign, and while it's not the fastest exp/hour, from 60 on it's pretty simple.  I see DRG's and DRK's pwning in Campaign all the freaking time.

Too many people are unrealistic as far as leveling goes, anyway.  NIN's will complain that they can't get a group, but then will turn down every invite to a level sync party below 37 because they don't feel like partying without Utsusemi: Ni.  RDM's will turn down invites below 40 because they don't have Convert.  It's like people cry about not getting invites but then refuse half the invites they do get.  You know how many PLD's I've had refuse my invite because we didn't have a RDM or BRD?  Really, for a level 55 Colibiri party, PLD can't tank without refresh?  I've partied with PLD's that could no problem, what, were they just that much better then everyone else?

Honestly, I blame the old school players for that, even though I am one myself.  People are just so freaking lazy.  If a party makes less then 10k an hour everyone starts whining.  People are like "If I'm making less then 8k per hour it's a waste of my time"...that's cool, well have fun making 0 exp per hour in WG with your flag up tardbait...

It's like the people that are just stuck on a certain camp, and if that camp is taken then they are like "oh well, no party tonight"  LOL WUT?  I've had so much fun partying in non-traditional camps because it's not only a change of scenery but since there's no one else there, you have the whole camp to yourself.  I've actually had people give up because the Colibri camp at the Leypoint in Wajaom was taken.

All in all, people just need to learn how to think outside of the damn box a little LOL.  Just because everyone says a certain thing HAS to be a certain way doesn't mean you can't try new things.  Look at the way things "Had to be" before Treasures of Aht Urhgan came out.  Radically different then the way things are today...


 

Reminds me how DPS meters ruined WoW imo. Everyone obsesed about numbers,numbers numbers...ahh if i wanted to worry about numbers so much I would go take some math classes >.0.Hell what happened to just playing a game and ejoying it. honestly i think thats why a lot of people dont like some mmos out there, because they DONT have DPS/heal meters they DONT have 20 addons u NEED to raid or group.

And WoW from what I have read is making things even lazyER with the removal of stats and Simplifying them. Cataclysm just sounds like.."hey lets make this game even easyer to be ubber with out much hard work".

Dont get me wrong I like casual/semi-causual, and more difficult games as well. But I dont want everything spoon feed to me either. It feels more satisfying and gratifying to earn/achieve things. I as well look forward to FF 14, it will bring a welcome challange and swing to the MMo of things.

Jeez,, you guys must be masochists or something. The highest I ever got was a level 61 Paladin and I played for a year and a half! Of course, I played back in 2003/late-2004...

How can you guys seriously be excited about 24 more levels?

Its not neccessarily masochistic nature, but an enjoyment of a game,and having patients. From what I have seen most FF11 players (as well as I) enjoy the journey and the depth of the game,and dont care how long it takes to reach MAX level. Its not about getting to end game all the time, but the journey to the end game. So what if it mite take you a year to get to that max level, at least you will not run out of things to do. I was having so much fun grouping and meeting people it made it so that I did not care to much about getting to end game FAST,My best memories are playing FF11, and I have played a lot of the other mmos out there too..FF11 does not get the credit it really deserves, most mmos are more of a rat race than anything else its all the "Get to end game,get the epic gear, Start some alts". FF11 is a TRUE mmoRPG(along with Lotro)...imo. I really hope they just merge most the servers and consolidate the population so its not so spread out, that would be killer. and i would really think about subing again until ff14. all in all the old saying holds true "its not everyones cup of  ______"

More of an open type space ( and yes i know others have used this refrence but I agree 100%) like eve has. Way better ground combat. Take out the Bridge officers and replace it with a similar system. Oh and more end game content. it toke me a month of semi casual play to reach end game, and there is very little for me to do besides start an alt...only after a month of play. The game it self for the most part is fun. But Cryptic needs to IMO get on the ball and make a GOOD patch and not all these minor BS patches. anywho I unsubed til there is more end game content. hope they dont blow it.

On one other note a funny thing crossed my mind that people disliked the Aid planet and similar missions,witch in one sense are diplomatic exploration missions. yet people also wanted this sort of stuff. you see I belive IF cryptic DID put in Diplomatic system/missions and such people would complain about running around to much. it seems most mmos these days are souly based on there combat to determine how good the game is, and following behind combat would be crafting and content. Honestly I miss the grouping of FF11 ya there was down time ya it toke a bit to maybe kill one mob, but the people and game made it fun and entertaining...hell even my wife whos not much of a gamer got into FF11 and loved it. any who caffince is kicking in lol. i leave it at that :P

I began playing online MMOs in 2001 starting with Diablo 2. After a few group experiences there and in a few subsequent games, I became a "solo player".


Not because I wanted to stay away from other online people, I have in fact, a longer history of belonging to virtual worlds versus gaming.


But it was the type of people I was running into. This last fall I started playing around with a Facebook account I had let lie dormant for two years, and decided to use games to learn Facebook.

 

Doing so resulted in a surprise for me. I LIKE grouping - as long as I can find people who take the time to construct and execute a plan. I've been playing a browser game - Castle Age - and I love how the players can use all of the tools on Facebook to plan and run a campaign.


This, to me, is what is missing from most games - a set of communication tools that let the player quickly find others they will enjoy playing the game with, and allows them a simple and easy to use method to stay in contact.


I don't know how they can duplicate a system like that, but on Facebook you have your game feeds, friend feeds, your wall, personal messaging, groups and group messaging, group and personal events, chat, and a note area.


Yes, there's a lot more at Facebook, but these tools are primarily what they gamers there use to communicate, plan, and execute game goals in an expedient fashion. Then we sit around and chat a bit when a mob goes down.


Why do I like it so much? If I get poorly matched person in my "army" and also on my Friend's List, I simply eject them from both.


Poorly matched for me, as a 50 year old married female is some silly person spreading porn around my Wall and sending nasty language through messaging and chat. Delete them and it goes away, forever. I may see their name in-game, may see something they post on Battle Chat, but for the most part they are blocked from my view.

wish more developers would take heed of this. It seems these days that all mmo's the only way (for the most part) to get exp. is threw combat and thats it. Would be nice to see a system where you can level with or with out fighting in some way or another.

Don't get me wrong as I love some aspects of this game.  That Guardian of Forever mission caught me totally off guard.  But I have read thats kinda of a one time experiance in this game.

 

Did anyone catch that MSN.com Game review on STO?  Ouch!


 

um with some game items u need to Right click hit info and read them, some have special effects not listed in the general tool tip of said item/gear. Just like when breading tribbles you have to right click and hit info to see withc one have an hour long buff effect,and form what i have seen most of the ones that do are spotted or stripped in some way.
