So here is something for all Vets to sit back after a good meal, sip a brandy and have a chuckle once more, click.

Do you have any SWG vids or pics that when feeling down you like to watch again in order to bring a smile to your face? If so post them so that we can all enjoy a merry Christmass together!

BTW: We all know who's getting a lump of coal in his stocking for the third year running, don't we ;)

its hard for me to watch that vid. WHY DIDN'T YOU SLAP HIM

sony has been caught doing this lots of times. i dont think it is true in this case though. every time soe pushes some horrid publish out and more quit a few misguided superfans try a little free damage control. its quite funny to see people wasting time on free pr when the company running the game obviously doesn't care about it themselves.

I think the case is actually that SoE has improved SWG to the point that the game is selling itself.

In terms of marketing the game, I would assume that when Station Launcher is finally ready for release they will have a big advertising campaign to push the package.

As it stands, you can download the free launcher and have trial access to seven MMO's, five strategy games and three casual games with more on the way, then choose to sub individually or take the station access package.

It makes sense that they would focus money on selling all their games at once, rather than just EQ or SWG seperately.

can i buy some pot from you?

It is a fine line indeed between saying that SOE pays people to be 'viral marketeers", which I have to honestly say I have not seen any "proof" of, and SOE employees doing it.

However, several current (at the time) and former SOE employees were caught in the past doing this stuff and admitted that supervisory personel at SOE (albeit low level) encouraged them to do viral marketing, both in pushing their own products and trolling on the competition. (There was an old article at Gamespot about this, I think, I'll see if I can find it.)

So technically, SOE was paying these people as employees, who in turn engaged in viral marketing activities (and got caught doing it). Were they paid to do viral marketing? Technically not.

Very VERY good point that if you took away the Star Wars IP there would be nothing at all about the NGE to attract anyone.

That isn't true of the Pre-CU.  Take away Star Wars and give it an original Sci-Fi/fantasy IP and it'd be just as good of a game and most of us would rather play it than any other game out there.

You HONESTLY believe that pre-CU would have been just as successful without the Star Wars IP? I mean, REALLY?

IF it wasnt soe/la in charge? it could have been called candyland online and done better. with those two fuck giraffes in charge no I.P. can survive.

As much as SOE's business decisions puzzle me, and I honestly think that who ever is making decisions there is utterly incompetent, the OP's one line post just isn't enough info to make any decisions off of.

Where is the rest of the conversation?  I can't judge any conversation off of one sentence.

With that out of the way, the RMT thing, is retarded, and will alienate what is left of their loyal playerbase...NGE was a total fiasco, the card thing is a bad move to.

Basically, SOE should just quit..or at least fire everyone working for them and bring in fresh talent.  At least at the higher tiers.

as i understand it no "known" talent will touch them.  thats why they end up hiring kids straight out of design school. remember thats whos running swg now. guys right out of college.  you to can ruin good games!

Yes of course SOE and EQ is the ONLY game where RMT exists...HELLO ? anyone home?

Because every RMT game started out pay to play with no RMT but then dumped RMT onto their playerbase while maintaining the subscription rate... HELLO? anyone home?

when it comes to soe dont bother knocking....nobodys home.

this game died when boiware got in bed with ea

the necroscope series!

DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES

Except to Harry Keogh, Necroscope. And what they tell him is horrifying.

In the Balkan mountains of Rumania, a terrible evil is growing. Long buried in hallowed ground, bound by earth and silver, the master vampire schemes and plots. Trapped in unlife, neither dead nor living, Thibor Ferenczy hungers for freedom and revenge.

The vampire's human tool is Boris Dragosani, part of a super-secret Soviet spy agency. Dragosani is an avid pupil, eager to plumb the depthless evil of the vampire's mind. Ferenczy teaches Dragosani the awful skills of the necromancer, gives him the ability to rip secrets from the mind and bodies of the dead.

Dragosani works not for Ferenczy's freedom but world domination. He will rule world with the knowledge raped from the dead.

His only opponent: Harry Keogh, champion of the dead and the living.

To protect Harry, the dead will do anything - even rise from their graves!

ah, smed. the p.t. barnum of mmo-dom. "THIS WAY TO THE GREAT EGRESS"

if quality and diversity keep failing then yes we are do for the bottom to drop out of the market.

Fallen Earth « Fallen Earth
7/03/08 5:22:41 PM

Happy almost July 4th! We’re out of the office tomorrow, so everyone in the office is very excited about the upcoming long weekend.

This week we’re working on the towns of Spider Hill, Watchtower, Coppermine, Pinkston, Mowbray, Picus Ridge, Devon Township, Barret Manor, the Repository, and Embry Crossroads. Embry Crossroads is getting particular attention since it’s the barter town in the Plateau. My favorite part of Embry Crossroads is an area nicknamed “Temple Row,” where all the religious nutjobs in the region try preaching to the masses, so you’ve got CoGs talking about the sleeping steel gods, the Judges decrying the preponderance of sin, etc. It’s a great color encounter that I think people will get a lot out of. We’re also working on the tutorial, new tool tips, guilds, vehicles, and raids.

Two things came up in the QotW suggestion thread I wanted to clear up:

Game Rating: We are assuming we’re going to be a Mature rated game. Honestly, considering the violence against realistic people, cursing, and grave robbing I don’t see how we couldn’t beat least Mature. Our concern is really more about going into Adults Only, but the lack of sex, torture, or any of that sort of stuff is probably going to make that much easier. We’re mainly about violence, cursing, and acts of questionable morality as opposed to sex and torture.

Servers/Shards: We want to have as few servers/shards as possible given our technology and projected player base. Does this mean one server/shard? Maybe, if we can swing that. It may also mean more than one, in which case we’ll look at doing some variation in the servers (like an unlimited PvP server, etc). We’re not planning on spreading our fans out over two dozen servers; we built the game with a preponderance of starter towns so we could support a large number of players the first day, in the hopes of having as few servers/shards as possible. However, if we get one million players the first day of release, there's no way they can all play on one server.

On a completely different note, when we begin selecting people for outside testing we’re not just going to run some program to pull a list of people with the most post counts on the forums and invite them to test. We’re looking for people who have intelligent things to say, say them well, and don’t go around causing a ruckus all the time. Testing is a very serious business and we only want people who will do what we need them to; when we ask everyone to test a specific town, a specific play style, etc, we need them to do it without question and then have a useful critique after it’s done. The only thing we really have to judge that capacity on is posts on the forums, so if you come here and have intelligent conversations, are polite, and don’t get banned every two weeks you have a much much higher chance of getting in our testing pool than folks who have a larger post count, but most of it is made up of pointless arguing, rudeness, etc. I’ve mentioned previously that folks who go out of their way to lend us a hand, like Taelanna, DarkTreader, and andreeon get extra consideration.

In short, if you act like a jerk in the forums, don’t expect to get into our testing pool. If anyone has to stop and think “Have I been a jerk?” then yes, yes you have.

How will Icarus promote Fallen Earth?

We’ve got a mixture of online ads in all the major MMO websites, print advertising in several major game magazines, and a larger media push in terms of interviews, screen shots, etc. We’re also in the process of working on new trailers and such. This isn’t something that will be apparent in the short term, but in a few months should start showing up. We’ll have some press release type materials available in the short term.

Any thoughts on a Fallen Earth movie?

Right now our eyes are on the more immediate goal, but it’s something that has been thought about. I’d love to see it happen; we’ve certainly got enough stories to tell. Actually I have a copy of a movie treatment that was written years ago for Fallen Earth that I pull out whenever any of my writers needs a confidence boost. The treatment is…not good. Turning Fallen Earth into a post-apocalyptic version of the story of Moses is not the direction I would go.

What sort of customization of item stats (rather than cosmetics like color) will be possible WITHIN an item? Can crafters 'experiment' to raise/lower stats to make, say MY 9mm fire faster (but do less damage) while yours does more damage (but fires slower)... or will this be handled by having different pistols entirely, with each pistol of a particular model being identical?

Item customization is done by making different items as opposed to customizing an item. So if you want a gun that fires faster but does less damage you can find instructions for that and make it instead of modifying a slower, more powerful gun. Research can often lead you to such items.

Also what more can you tell us about Fallen Earth's day/night cycle? How long are they, for instance?

The day/night cycle is sped up about 6 times faster than normal, so a full day is four hours. The night time is being lightened, as previously it was way, way too dark.

Chat bubbles, will we have them and will they be cool?

You will have them and they will be cool. They will be easily visible without taking up too much screen real estate.

another game that allows players to make their own companions...seriously why would someone want to pay

monthly for the opportunity to play alone?

Whether a sandbox game can succeed depends on your definition of success.

Can a true sandbox game make money? Yes.

Can a true sandbox game challenge WoW? No.

agreed. sheeple will play anything.

Ummm, funny, I found Bloodfin to be quite dead, not 100%, but at least 90%...  Most I saw online at one time was 75 or so people.

SWG is as bad as ever, nothing has really changed.

So, just to understand here...you're trying to say someones opinion is wrong?  Only your opinion is correct?

I suppose they are blind or something Obraik because I saw tons of people playing the game. I started a brand new toon early in the morning and I saw people in the tutorial,on the planet doing the quests, all over ther star ports in multiple cities. They were pvping,Roleplaying,Hanging out in some of the Cantina's etc. The game is not dead and it does not matter to me what people think about SWG now its not a bad game anymore. I still prefer EQ2 over it right now,but I will play both games and it sure as hell beats wow for me.

Just like Sigil said that Vanguard would never be owned by SOE, right? In fact, nobody knows what will happen.

But SOE is only one major publisher, so even if Icarus runs out of money, it is not set in stone that SOE will buy it up (could also be EA, or Funcom or whatever). However, if it will end up in SOE's hands, there will be a looooot of sad faces among all the NGE haters, hehe.

i wouldn't touch it. and i think icarus knows what would happen if they made that move.

Even if SOE could be irrefutably proven to have committed fraud, the chance that John Smedley himself would do a perp walk or spend a night in a jail cell is laughable. Anyone who insists on his imprisonment for his "crimes" loses any and all credibility. It will never happen.

Which is why most of us are perfectly happy to sit back and watch his company fall apart around him. Seeing Smed become the laughing stock of the mmorpg world has been amazingly entertaining.

more fun than learning traps. more fun than visiting my favorite crafter. more fun than selling mats. more fun than hanging out in a cantina....

soe can see now that they killed the game but the community lives on. and we do not forget or forgive. we will always be there to remind players to avoid them!

It is getting harder and harder for me to get excited about the games that are 3 years in development but just now entered alpha.

I will be excited when they enter closed beta.

And since it wont be , for at least a year from now ... the notion of the game just slightly amuses me

dude beta isn't that far off. later this year.
