Thanks for the help guys.  Off to work now.  Hopeful my download will be complete when I get home and all the launch issues will be sorted out.

That seems to be a strong advantage for pirates.  I'd imagine ship are worth more than anything else in the game.  What is there that balances things out for the nations so people choose to be them?

When a pirate takes control of a ship it's got a single durability, meaning it can be sunk once and it's gone for good. A captured ship is never as good as a mastercrafted playermade one. Pirates, although having an economy, don;t have nearly the economy of other nations (which have availability to freetraders and the likes)

Can't Pirates captures mastercrafted ships?  And you're saying that if I'm french and my ship gets sunk, I'll still have that ship intact afterwards?   What's the death penalty then, just docked exp?

Is there any sort of tracking system for who you kill?  For example is you kill Squid McInky, is there a log somewhere that says you've killed Squid McInky?  Or can have his severed head or something?  Or is the only way to prove you've killed someone is the fact that you're now the proud owner of their ship.

Well, you can only even take their ship as a pirate. There's no other way currently to track objectives like that.

So you can't take someone elses ship if you belong to a nation?

Correct. You can only take control of a ship other than you own, if you are a pirate.

Also,  are people able to surrender in a battle?

Do you get xp for PvP?

I think I read somewhere that you can change your career eg - you can switch from freetrader to privateer, is this true?

I'm guessing since battles are instanced, you can't join in someone else's PvP battle?

Thanks for the help miagisan.

Are ships allowed to have the same name as another ship?

I'm hoping someone who has played the game is around to answer these questions for me.

Are you able to have characters from different realms?  For example could I have a Spanish character and a Pirate character on the same account?

Are you able to communicate with characters from different realms?  When I played DAoC you could even talk to someone from a different realms, they were just like mobs, is it the same here?

Are you able to rename ships that you capture?

Are people allowed to have the same name in game?

Do Pirates have different classes like freetrader, etc?

Is your ship selection limited by what profession you choose?  If so do pirates have a limited selection at all?

That's all I can think of for now, thanks in advance for any answers.

I've not played the game at all yet, but my impression of what I've seen is the avatar part of the game isn't even meant to be half the game, the focus is more on the ship part of the game, someone please correct me if I'm wrong.  But this would explain why the avatar part of the game isn't so wonderful and like others have said before I'd expect to see improvements in that area as the game rounds to form.

Unless you get alienware, you're not going to find a laptop that can handle Vanguard.   I'm in beta, and I couldn't find anything that would do the job, I ended up going back to a desktop.
Wow this is great, I wish they'd have done it years ago.  I played FFXI for it's first 1-2 years of it's existence and enjoyed it except for these people, they are the biggest reason I left the game.
We are ending our open recruitment at midnight (PST) 11/30/06. Anyone who applies after this time will be in a holding pool until a month after launch. We will still be accepting friends and family of guild members since they have a sponsor. We will also be accepting beta testers (don't tell us) who arrange for a guild member to sponsor them.

The new recruitment rules will be posted before Nov 30.
We were going to wait until beta 4 to post this but we aren't going to be able to delay any longer.

We want to stop by and say hello! Many quality gamers have joined us since our last up-date and we have room for more.

We are a “core” guild that will play the game for fun. We are not casuals or hardcore. We will be raiding on a regular basis. We will have members on all three continents in-game. Our members are currently located from GMT -8 (PST) to GMT +2, (we will not be limiting recruitment to these time zones). We are looking for mature, quality players from the pre-release community. Our guild’s interest run the gamut: Adventuring, raiding, crafting, diplomacy, harvesting, trading, building a guild town, and ships.

If you are looking for a pre-launch guild that has a diversity of members from around the world, you are welcome to visit Ex Umbris.

We are nearing the hardcap size for our guild. Our original plan was to close open recruitment at Beta 5 but we may decide to end enrollments before then. When we freeze our membership we are going to be revising our recruitment policy. No new members will be added to the guild until a month after launch.

The details of our new policy will be revealed later but now is the time to act if you want to be a full member of Ex Umbris at launch!

I actually don't mind SOE.  I think they're just hated because they're the biggest.  When you're the biggest, you change something, you're going to have someone not liking that change no matter what it is.  Over the years SOE games have undergone alot of changes, and with each change, some people have become unhappy.

My only beef is how much they charge for their monthly fees.
Great list of stuff! Thanks for posting.  I always appreciate having all the info I need in one place.
I like the idea of having to buy maps, or maps are made once you've travelled an area.  I think it adds to the realism.
The general feeling I get from people in my guild who've been following the game very closely is that the game will be released late February/early March.   Like others have said, i just hope they take the time to do it right and have a smooth release with all the content they promised.
I'm surprised and impressed that Brad posted in here. I'm happy to see his involvment in the community.
I've been following this game for awhile now and it's the best thing I can see on the horizon.  Will the game be perfect?  No
Are there things I'd like to see done differently? Yes.
Do the graphics look lifeless thus far?  Yes,  I hope this most of all changes before release.

These faults being said there are only a small handfull of games on the market or in development that show the promise that Vanguard does.  I'll be getting it when it's released and while I dfeinitely agree there's a chance I'll be disappointed with it, I'm willing to give it a chance to win me over, which is much more than I can say about all those naysayers who trash the game and anything Brad has to say just to boost their little ego's.
Greetings!

Ex Umbris (Out of the Shadows) is very excited by the launch of beta 3!

We are working very hard on our web site, and lore.

Ex Umbris Portal

Ex Umbris Charter

Ex Umbris - Rules

Ex Umbris Raid Loot Rules

The basic tenants of eXu lore include:

-There is a Spiritual Force at work that selects people to have "the call"
-Ex Umbris is thousands of years old and has existed under a great myriad of leaders and has built up an eccentric feel after all this time
-The Ex Umbris "Vaults" were built thousands of years ago when a Dwarf ran eXu.
-Most of the previous generation are finding and selecting our characters and trying to continue the Order.
-Most members are spread out around the world doing what they can to make the "world a better place".
-"The Call" manifests itself as a driving need to get out into the world and make a difference.

We are a role-play friendly guild and have a role-play background that we encourage members to add to, however we do not require any form of role-play from our members.

We are still recruiting and now have a formalized application process. We require the following information when you apply:

1. How would you describe yourself?
2. What is your favorite race to play? Why?
3. What is your favorite class to play? Why?
4. What spheres do you plan to participate in? (adventure, crafting, diplomacy, harvesting, trading.)
5. Describe your play style in Massive Multiplayer On-line Games.
6. Character names and classes?:
7. Main character?:
8. Starting location?:
9. What brought you to VG?:
10. How did you hear about Ex Umbris?:
11. Do you have an ExU sponsor, if so who?

14. Describe your experience with your guild(s).
15. Have you ever served as a guild officer? Other positions of responsibility?
16. Member of any other guilds in VG?:
17. Vanguard is a group-centric game and we plan to group a lot. Does that fit your play style?
18. We are not a hardcore raid guild. Do you like to raid?
19. How much do you plan on raiding a month?
20. Do you role-play?
21. Have you read the guild charter?
22. Do you understand the loot system we will use for guild raids?
23. What are your requirements for a guild?:
24. What are your dislikes in a guild?:
25. Do you have friends and family you are hoping will come join this guild at a later date?
26. Do you have any questions for us?

If you are interested in applying for guild membership, feel free to stop by the site and post in our applications forum!

Note: We fully support the Vanguard NDA. NDA violating information is not welcome in either our public or private forums.
I'm not certain flying mounts will be in the game at launch.  I know they used it for interview and demonstration purposes, but I've read Brad say that he wasn't going to guarantee flying mounts would be there at launch, though the impression was that if they didn't make launch they'd come soon after.
Hey guys.

There's a bunch of us over at the silkyvenom forums that have been working on developing a guild for the "core players".  This means we are on frequently, but aren't a hardcore raiding guild.  We're about making a mature tightly knit community.  We will do some raiding, but our main focus will be helping each other out in the game and just having a good time with people we know.

If this sounds like something that interests you feel free to stop by our forums and check it out.

Not only will you have to depend on crafters to build your house, you also need diplomats to get you NP approval to buuild your house.  This is all part of Sigil's plan to make each of the three spheres interdependant upon each other.
