Agreed

Compared to the releases of Vanguard, LotRO and AoC, i have had a great time playing this release. I have the settings onm high, little lag and tons of rvr fun. Just what i was hoping for basically.

Sad to say it but it's true, just like Vanguard before it the 'Next Big Thing' has burned out not with a bang but with a whimper... and before the release date as well. Mythic have made the biggest mistake of their lives going with GOA - now 50% of their playerbase is completely disillusioned with them and a great game with a great franchise behind it, one that COULD have easily contested with WoW is the laughing stock of the industry.

IMO, WAR was the last hope against WoW, and it has completely failed. Looks like there will be no big changes in the MMO world any time soon.

Ya know , WAR did not fail.

Mythic made a poor choice going with another game theme very similar to one already out there.

What if it was Dark Age 2. Damn. I bet it would be a lot different of a story now. I dont think WAR failed. It was just a poor marketing choice. I am sure Mythic will still make thier money, but a Dark Age 2 with the proper marketing would have killed what WAR is doing now.

I like the last sentence....

I dont want to play the #1 game out there cause all the others are. I need unique, a bit of a chanllenge.

Why does everyone think something "HAS" to dethrone WoW. For all i care, all the hardcore pvp ers and rvr ers out there can come settle down in WAR. That is it. I dont want to RvR people out there to kill mobs and pve. So if it means WAR has a less subscriber player base then WoW or whoever so be it. As long as people wanna smash each other though our keyboards , im game.

Title says it all. My first game ( after a few slack months in UO) was Dark Age a few months after its release. Loved it in its day and played for a few great years. Still do off and on.

Could any former or current Dark Age players give a good , neutral summary of WAR's rvr? Perhaps even a slight comparison? I am not in Beta and am still debating if i want to play this. I need a good comparison here to drive my decsion. I had fun with Frontiers. The old days of Emain Dark Age was great. If it is anything like that , i think i may give it a go.

1. Skill Based System. Erase the word level from the mmo vocabulary. I want skills that interact with my characters' age , and the time i put in to Harvasting or Killing mobs or Exploring etc etc. I dont want to be level X, the top of the food chain.  Interact all aspects of a game to skill base. If i want to learn to ride a horse day one i should be able to go out and train for it instead of collecting 10 apples for level 3...

2. Big world. Mountains, Desert, Ocean, Jungles, Forests, Dungeons. Enough said.

3. Sci Fi. About time. I love fantasy but c'mon. It is long overdue.

4. Housing. A must. Some how. Zone it do anything, i love building my house with my hard earned cash and resources.

5. A balance instance system. Perhaps for solo'ers or hard core raiding, while stil having world dungeons for all to explore. IE Darkness Falls in Dark Age and the private instance system.

6. Death matters. I do not want permi death or loss of gear, but a little consequnce should play a factor like loss of exp.

7. Is it possible to have a translation system in game? If someone says Hello to me in Korean, is it possible for me to see it as Hello in english on my screen and then say hi back? It would be great to understand everyone out there...

8. Do not make me buy a new pc with every new game. Make a game for the times, one that can accell and yet the "simple working" gamers (like me) can play with out selling a minor organ.

9. Make a killer soundtrack and have all the ambient noises. I love hearing the environment around my char or fighting to some epic tune. Think "Gladiator The Battle" in a Thunderstorm....

10. Finish the Game before you release. Please. Please. Please. Cut content , extend your date, just release a game that is , for the most, bug free and smooth. No Broken classes or content. I know it is hard, but is has been done. I think in the long run it is worth it. I tried LotRO a year after it came out and what a difference.

My personal thoughts though . Thanks for the thread.

I know, you are all getting tired of these WAR vs WoW posts, but really, even though I am getting tired of WoW myself, I still have not seen anything to suggest that WAR will be a step up from WoW. Except for RvR.

Almost all the other features of WoW seem to be superior to WAR's:

1.) Almost open world, with flying mounts where I can land wherever I want in Outland (and Northrend from level 77)

2.) Amazing PvE that is going to get a huge boost in WOTLK

3.) An economy with an AH

4.) A  huge world comparing to other MMOs

5.) Professions that finally became meaningful

In WAR's favour: PvP and that is about it.

Or are there more WAR features that will blow WoW out of the water that I don't know about? (not in the beta, only going on what I read here).

Please understand that I am not a WoW fanboy, in fact I desperately want to leave it for a superior MMO. Just have not seen one yet.

WAR's favour RvR (pvp) wins it for me. The rest is all secondary really.  Thanks for the thoughts

As cool as the wow trailer was i just could not compare it to the action on the war trailer. I enjoyed the wow trailer, but it lacked something the other 2 had. The length of the war movie won it for me. Both were great though.. nice to have those out there to watch!

I want freedom more then anything.

You and me both, and many of us.

We are the neglected, somewhat silent majority.

It is high-time a gaming company takes our money and delivers on an MMORPG that has:

  • World Immersion
  • Character Customization
    • Classes
    • Professions
    • Appearance
    • Diety
    • Political Affiliations
    • Race (perhaps I can create my own race? Let's take this to new levels)
    • Development
  • Deep (but Optional) Questing
  • Options
    • Adventurer
    • Explorer
    • Tavern-owner
    • Inn-keeper
    • Dungeon-creator
    • Mayor of a town (perhaps even a city after dedicated gameplay?)
      • Let players design the city, similar to SWG
    • All of the above?  Why not?

Linear gameplay, forced-raiding are a dime-a-dozen today.  Where is the "something" different, deeper, and more diverse gameplay?

Yep like i said before, getting rid of levels for skill base would be a start.

Basically It is going to have to be a pnp board game brought to your desktop...and more. It is something i am sure all developers were trying to do back in the early days of MMO's , one way or another. At least they were trying to do perhaps. I felt UO , Original EQ and DAoC all had some pnp aspect to it. Never tried Eve so no comment.

Oblivion can do what ever it wants , fact is, it is not a MMO. It has a nice model for a MMO but it seems to lack somewhere , i just cannot put my finger on it. I think we may have a few years untill we get all this "Total Freedom" within a true sandbox game in a fantasy or sci-fi game.

I sometimes get the feeling developers are getting away from the pnp aspects of the games and are now modelling games off of other's pasts success and looking at the $$$ instead of originality. I guess it is risk vs. reward?

IMO though .

We are in the majority.  MMORPGs are not just about cheap "quests" you do with two people;  MMORPGs are about a

  1. Different
  2. Bigger
  3. More Challenging
  4. Innovative
  5. and fun gaming experience.

The MMORPG has gotten watered-down, cheap, cheesy, predictable, and boring.  It should be accessible;  it should offer varied options; and the world should feel real.

6. Skill Based Lvl system. Kill levels altogther actually. I am sick of levels. Gimme skills for kills.

Yep I agree. I remember when i first heard of a Tolkien MMO.. i was hoping they would set it in the timeframe between the Hobbit and LotR... but the way it is now is just fine with me. I am happy with out a flaming sword and shoulder pads that bigger then any other armour piece.

As for pvp , I dont need right now personally. This is the perfect game setting and background for pve.

I am all for the Origins server, hopefully the server will hold everyone.  Guess we'll find out after launch. Hard to say how many actually will return, on top of those who plan to play there and start over.

If cross realming is to happen on Origins, i will personally throw in the towel with Dark Age. It is one realm or nothing, for myself.

Agreed, we need more truly medieval MMOs! I love watching that specific genre of movies and would love to play in a world similar to the worlds depicted on screen.

It really isn't that hard to do. I can imagine crafting playing a big role in such a game. Basically it needs not be flashy but instead more focussed on gameplay and sticking true to the theme. Riding turtles just won't cut it...regular horses should be the norm. Small details all add up in the end!

yep any movie such as Kingdom of Heaven, Hero, 13th Warrior and so on could be thrown together for a some wicked themes.. Dark Age is the closest IMO, i love that game, but it is getting older, and should have a hier.

At lvl 20 (I think) you will get the Overpower stance that increases your DPS alot with 2-hand weapon and makes killing mobs much faster! Maybe you should lvl all 3 to 20 before you decide if you are uncertain!

Glad you enjoy the game :)

I gotta say that leveling all 3 to 20 is not outta the question. I am enjoying the Guard. I took a Elf for it though.. is that a poor race choice? I choose Elven because (gasp) i wanted to be one, not for the stats , go figure. So far so good.

Personally ill be going hib as a bm

Roll Hib then dude... Who cares who will roll hib/mid/alb? It will pan out , trust me. People are going to go to the place they are comfortable.... then realize they cannot cross realm.

That is is right. Die cross realming... cause we all did it!

So play what you wanna be and you're friends will catch up.
