its unfair to compare Aion which went through beta twice and had one year of live game experience with other MMO who never had this luxury.

Or course its not unfair - what a funny comment to make.  WOW and others benefitted massively from the same phenomenon in reverse (e.g. when that game opened in China) so why not the other way round?

So we should only compare the aion launch to the launch of WoW in China....  Which point were you arguing?

That new website - A game with bugger all bugs?

I can't think of any other game this polished with such good community functions at launch?

What are you smoking and would you please share? The game hasn't officially launched, for one, and two - the 5 hour queues and server crashes hardly constitute a smooth sudo-launch. CoH had a much better launch by far, and so did LotRO. I like Aion, but this headstart launch (which is what it actually is) was pretty much handled incredibly poorly.

define poorly? Cause I don't think anyone who was online in the servers thinks the game was handled Poorly at all.

There is nothing to complain about. What are YOU smoking?

So the people playing had no complaints... what about the people waiting in the queue for hours at a time?  I guess their complaints don't count. :/

I guess you think only a WoW clone can be the WoW killer....

Is everyone forgetting that the game has already been out for a while?   Of course it's ready for launch now, it's just localization of a game that was already up and running in another language. :/

Iav seen many Console RPGs with the features that GW had. Iam not hyped up by Anet.

There is not one single mmo out  that has a unique feature to it, what's your point?

That is utter nonsense.  You must have played very few MMOs for you to believe that.  SWG was and still is packed with unique features, Ryzom has great a skill system I have never seen in another MMO.  Even lackluster games like WAR and AOC have features not found in any other MMO.  Just because WoW is complete everquest rip doesn't mean all games are.

The more information that is released about a game, the lower it's hype goes.  The same people giving it 10s today will rip it to shreds at launch because it isn't the game they wanted it to be.  As long as we don't have any information about it, it can be everything to everyone.  With every bit of solidly confirmed information about the game, another subset of rats will jump ship.  Until they tell us otherwise, the pie-in-the-sky MMO nerds will assume it's the pinnacle of game development and the answer to all their prayers.

I don't know why anyone expects it to be an MMO, the first one certainly wasn't.  It was a co-op RPG with multiplayer arena matches.  An it's only real appealing feature was the lack of a monthly fee... but then again, you get what you pay for.  If GW had a monthly fee, everyone would have derided it for what it was lacking... and compared to other premium MMOS, it was lacking an awful lot.

Yeah, because once you had done something cool, why bother ever doing it again?  :/

Seriously... I mean, girls play games, we know this, and a few even play mmorpgs, we know this also, but by looking at the Aion FB page it looks like this game has managed to appeal to the female player base in a massive way.

And we all know that where girls go, boys follow...

I'm not going to read all 6 pages but judging from the first page a lot of you seem clueless to the fact that girls have more appeal to asian centric type games... games like this, and particularly Final Fantasy have a 'ton' of females playing them. I don't blame some of you though, seeing as most western gamers have never played outside of the westernized style rpg.

I'm not sure I am ready to subscribe to this theory about girls loving Asian grinders... but I did want to ask, when you say "a ton", do you mean 5% of the player base instead of the usual 2%?

Anyone know what's up with the Warhammer servers today?  i can't log in or get to their website.

How did you "beat it"?

Maybe these options:

He has seen what the endgame rvr is actually about and does not enjoy it or does not enjoy the endgame pve

Endgame PvE is roof jumping and eventually uninstalling the game.  If he "beat" it, then he missed the point of the game to begin with.  It's an RvR game.  If he played it without doing RvR, it's his own fault for not playing it as intended.  If he just didn't like the endgame PvP, then that's another topic entirely.... and it has nothing to do with "beating" the game.

I think I've found my favorite game columnist!

I didn't find much I could agree with in what she had to say on the subject.  When we say the customer is always right, we generally do assume that companies have more than customer.  We are discussing them as a collective, and they ARE always right.. otherwise they cease to be "the customer".

I have seen a few developers argue that the customer should just shut up and let the professional software developers decide what it is that we want.  This is the attitude we got from Smedly regarding SWG and from some ass-hat named Sillius who was working on vanguard.  It seems to have been the overriding philosophy when developing a little piece of software called Windows Vista.  These guys decided they knew better than we did what it was that we wanted, and they ended up being proved wrong.  We didn't want the NGE, we didn't want a punishing crafting system and we didn't want a pop-up every five seconds asking us if we are sure we meant to click that button.

Bottom line, you have to give your customers what they want, even if it conflicts with what you want them to have.  Developers DO NOT have a better idea what we enjoy than we do.  That is what is meant by the customer is always right.  We understand that neither "the customer" or the "the developer" are actually singular.  We also understand that specific customers and specific developers want to see different things... but all of that is really beside the point.  I think with the exception of a few posters who speak very little English, we all understand that the phrase "the customer is always right" simple means you have to give your customers what they want.

For some reason, I've been looking into this game despite it's notoriety. Sick of the current crop of sub standard MMORPGs, each with their own reasons as to why they're unplayable and / or boring....

- AOC - Input lag, heavy instancing, sluggish animation ridden combat

- WoW - Gear Treadmil endgame, lack of enjoyable replayability

- WAR - ... Next

- LOTRO - Ridiculously slow and unresponsive combat

- Everquest II - No.

- Aion - Poorly executed derivative piece of garbage.

- Runes of Magic - Cheap version of WoW with a cash shop. Goodie.

Instead of simply asking "Hay guyz should I pa-lay?" I'll ask something a bit different. What do you do in this game? After you learn how to play and do your starter quests(?), what is an average day for a guilded and/or solo darkfall player?

Bonus Question - I downloaded the darkfall client a LONG time ago, back when the game was about to be released. Can Install / patch this client for use on the US servers?

Maybe you just don't like MMOs.  There are some really good games on your list, and if you hate all of them, you should probably quit wasting your money on a genre of games you simply don't enjoy.  I hear there are some really good first person shooters out there.

The only bad thing about this game is Funcom is making it. That alone turns many people off.

The idea for the game though is completely solid and I hope Failcom learned from its AoC failure.

I'm right there with you.  I learned my lesson about the funcom hype machine.  I've played a lot of games that were rocky at launch, but Conan just felt like bait and switch.  Most of the things that were interesting to me weren't in at launch and several of them will never be.  A year later, Conan still doesn't look like the game it was advertised as.  That game is a colossal waste of the graphics capabilities.  Environments look great, character models are excellent.. all the gear looks like ass.  Maybe getting outside the strict confines of an established IP will correct that problem.  I certainly won't get my hopes up about this game... but I'll keep a close eye on user reviews after it launches and I might look in to it if I hear enough good things.

A rather interesting article on DCUO...  Looks like they are planning to make the game free to play kinda following the guild wars model.  I'm guessing they will no doubt also have a item shop.

Anyone think that maybe CO might change to free to play model?  They got an item shop in game now and cryptic is pretty good about doing updates.  Might be a better model for them especially while the game is still really rough...

Maybe lifetime members get all the expansions free??

I think Champions Online will have no choice but to free to play within a year.  I don't think they will have enough subscribers to maintain a subscription based sales model.

It's anime style, which is not exactly the style many people here prefer.  It's not that one is prettier than the other, it's the difference in artistic style.  Asian developers cater to asians, while western developers cater to the audience here.

western have other option than goofy robotic.  why not use the style of their comics? or TV cartoon shows? or fantasy art museum gallery?

Prince of Persia the next gen is perfect. why not do like that? it dont look goofy nor robotic. or Unreal Tournament... characters in UT are awesome and totally not goofy robotic.

I really don't find the female characters to be ugly in most of the AAA western MMOS.  You are having to look outside the MMO genre for most of your examples.  Vanguard lets you make some pretty ugly characters, but you can also make them attractive.  I think the female characters in WAR and AOC both look pretty good.  I certainly prefer them to the ones in lineage 2 or Guild Wars.  The female characters in Aion look pretty decent, but the male characters all look a little soft and androgynous to me... some of them are downright feminine.  The thing that I always find to be odd is that the characters in Asian games rarely look Asian.

I suppose if your game can't hold it's own based on features of gameplay, you have to rely more on selling sex appeal to pervy teens... with names like "upskirtpower".

We all know the women in Oblivion are horse faced, but you are just choosing the worst Western examples and comparing them to the most attractive characters in Asian games.  I stay away from assign games specifically because i don't like the art style.  A bunch of mostly nude female warriors with the faces of children.... but I guess we all have different tastes.

It has been too many times I have seen this retarded message pop-up after a full registration:

"Sorry. Beta is open for US & Canada residents only".

Dear publishers,

#1: Europe has 100 Million more residents
#2: Internet penetration is at the same level and Western Europe even exceeds US

Maybe you should take this grievance to the European game development community.  The problem isn't that American companies use American players to beta test... it's the lack of European games being developed.  If, as you say, the target audience is larger in Europe than North America, you would think there would be enough European companies running beta tests to keep you happy.

Just out of curiosity... how many languages would you need to communicate effectively with the bulk of the population of Europe?  By testing in the US and Canada, they can test an English only version of the game.  Localization usually comes much later in the development process.

Lastly, what does beta testing locations actually have to do with making sure you penetrate the largest market of the world?  That last point of your's is certainly open for debate.  There are a few billion people on the content of Asia who would probably disagree with you.  Europe makes up about 10% of the world's population and 7% of it's landmass.

I think the 6 was a tad generous.

I agree... Like others have said the review seems pretty accurate when you read it, I just don't know how that translates to a 6.  Reading the review gives the impression that the game has some good ideas, mostly executed poorly... but somehow it's above average.  My question is, how bad does a game have to be to get a 5 or below from you guys.  What is the point of a rating scale that really only goes from 5 to 10?  Does a game automatically get 5 points just for firing up and running?

I have played them all, several to top level.  This is the only game I can log in and with no hassle be in a large PvP group within a couple of minutes.  PvP in Warhammer is balanced and gated so that it is available, meaningful and rewarding at all levels.  You can start this game a level all the way up strictly through PvP...  You will even have great gear throughout the ride.
