I stand corrected, but I think that point should be emphasized lest we forget; Star Wars Galaxies... wait a sec... that needs more emphasis... *STAR* Wars... launched without a space component AT ALL.

Is that what destroyed the game?

I think not.

Well, it sure didn't help the game. It probably drove off a lot of players. I didn't play the game, but the lack of space combat would have kept me from playing if I had otherwise been inclined to try it.

Still, one would likely be correct to point out that times have changed. Can you imagine what these boards would look like right now if Bioware had announced that TOR had no space combat? Hehehe... Epic Fail would suddenly become the two most used words in the English language.

As far as I know - there has been no space combat announced for the SWTOR launch. Once again - that's a deal-breaker for me.

You seem to have a pretty specific set of deal-breakers when it comes to video games you might otherwise enjoy.   personally, I prefer to judge games for what they are, rather than what they aren't.

From the screenshots, it looks like all the space battles are of a scale seldom seen in Star Trek.  How many times in the movies or any series did you see 20 ships on screen battling it out?  I know there are a few examples, but most altercations were limited to two or three ships max.  In the numbers we see in screenshots the ships look almost disposable.

It would make for a pretty boring mmo if all you ever did was solo the game, right?  Not that I'm a support of raid or die, but in general people should have the option to solo or to group.  Grouping will likely take you out of the pure immersion, but is still a vital component of an online game.  Sometimes you just have to give a little for the bigger picture.

I fall in the group that was hoping for grouping inside a ship as well as between multiple ships.  I understand that they couldn't really force us in to player crews, but I would have loved the option.  Some of my fondest gaming memories are from inside mulit-person ships in SWG.

Let's be honest though, the reason that you didn't see large scale battles was because those shots were super expensive to create. As the technology improved for it, you started to see it more often. The precedent set in the Trek universe for the Federation at all out war was set in DS9, and quite frankly the major battles were HUGE and epic. Or there's I suppose the war with the borg... where lots of ships were.

If you think about it, that's the only way war makes sense. In war, there might be smaller skirmishes, but there are also always huge battles with lots of conbatants on either side. it's been that way throughout history.

Don't worry, there's plenty of opportunity in the game for small scale battles as well. You vs. 3 or 4 ships, etc. that captures the trek feeling you're thinking of.

Cryptic advertises the big battles cause they look cooler, that doesn't mean that's all there is to the game.

I grew up watching reruns of the original series and then TNG. I never really watched much DS9, so I guess I missed most of the larger scale battles you mentioned... other than the borg battles in the later movies.  I see this as the only way to make this a real mulitplayer game after the one player / one ship decision was set in stone.

While this isn't the Star Trek game I envision, I still have to admit they had me at "to boldly go". ;)

It does *look* great.  Everything about this game visually appeals to the sci-fi nerd in me... to bad it is so mind-numbingly boring to actually play it. :/

Sounds like a combinations dish/laundry soap. ;)

When a German developer makes a game, in German and based on a German TV series... I bet you guys get it before we do.  I'm just sayin'.  ;)

And to be fair, most people in the US didn't know or care about the launch of Champions online either.  That game's failure really knows no borders.

Ignoring inconsequential little indie games and Asian ports, I'd say it's a draw between AOC and WAR.  It's a shame, both games seemed to have a ton of potential.... before they launched.

You know what I hate??.  Its the whining bitches on these forums.  That act like they speak for  a whole playerbase, the only people that they speak for are the 200 active people on this site.

AMEN! Quit whining about the damn game and GO PLAY SOMETHING ELSE! WoW doesn't care what you think and neither does their 11mil+ subscribers, so get over it. You don't need to force it down everyone else's throat by constantly making new threads on it. You hate WoW, we've established that, MOVE ON!

so.. how is posting what you don't like about WoW any different than posting what you don't like about WAR?  It seems like you don't have a problem with that...

I'm not going to read this whole thread, but I assume this has been said before.  For me, it's the graphics.  WoW looked pretty lame when it launched, now it looks like it's 10 years old.  No thanks. :)

"Sorry but this agme is destined to fail."

Your reasoning is very weak to base your dislike for a game due to limited game play at a demo.  Thats as bad as basing the game will fail because it doesn't have features you wanted (Player crew members, interiors etc), as others could care less about those features.

I think more potential customers want player crews than don't.

You are going to see a LOT of "Why can't I be the <fill in role other than captain>" threads in fora.

I think less potential players want player crews than don't.  If you think most people want to be something other than captain, then you are a crazy person.  Sure, there are people out there who want to be the science officer on their buddy's crew, but most people want to captain their own ship.  I think you are fooling yourself if you believe otherwise.

Also i think its quite obvious who they are trying to draw in with lasers, ships and explosions on the front cover...

What are you getting at there?  They are trying to drawn in people who want a game with, "lasers, ships and explosions".  Isn't that what this game is all about?

Personally if you want a browser game to fiddle around with an hour or two a day, I'd recommend Heroes of Gaia far over Evony. Players in Evony spam a lot, or tend to be rude (If you don't play fast enough or get strong enough they will just boot you from an allince without warning, and then tell their players to farm you)

Maybe i was just lucky, but my experience wasn't like that at all. Yes, I got invaded, but I turned right back around and sent my armies after the guy who attacked me. Yes, I got raped, but they were so impressed at my chutzpa that they invited me to their guild. I had an awesome experience until I finally got bored and moved on.

I had about the same experience.  The first guy that ever plundered my city later invited me join his alliance.  When I joined they sent me a ton of resources to rebuild my wall defenses.

I have been playing about a month and I am enjoying it quite a bit.  Some of the high level training does take days.  To get to the last level in archery took 233 hours of training time.  Of course, these training times are nothing compared to the Eve.  You can train every skill to the top level in about a month.

This is a pretty fun game if you are in to RTS.  It's a really diplomatic and active game.  Always on PvP with full loot... and it's free.   I can't really find much to complain about considering the price. Despite what some people have said here, you CAN play the game totally free.  And yes, you can still chat.  Talking in world chat uses a consumable item, which can be bought for real money.  I have plenty of them, and I have never spent a dime on one.  I also dont ever even view world-chat because it is a cesspool... like any game's open chat.  It costs nothing to speak in alliance chat or to whisper someone.  You also get a free spin on the prize wheel every day, where you can win all the things they sell for real money... You can even win 10 to 30 dollars worth of coins on a spin.  That is how I have bought every item I have wanted.

I agree with everything else you've said though.
People say that the skill system isn't a level grind but it is a money grind.

That pretty much sums up my view of Eve.  I think a lot of the ships look cool, but you don't usually see them up close anyway.  This game is just a pretty, boring screensaver.  It's flying toasters 2.0. ;)

I hate this assertion that playing Eve requires more intellect than other games.  What it requires is a high tolerance for tedium, low standards for content and very little desire to actually play a game.... since most of the time you are just watching it play itself and waiting for skills to level on their own.  Why is it that any time someone says this game is boring, the fanboys read that as too difficult.  I guess they mean the game is so boring that it's difficult to make yourself keep playing it. :)

Eve online, it's boring as hell and not really a game.

Many consider it boring, which I can understand, even though I love the game. Claiming that it is not a game just makes you sound like a fool.

You can certainly make an argument that Eve is a TOY rather than a GAME.  This isn't really saying something negative about Eve.  If you take the time to look in to the distinction between the two, you'd see why some people feel that Eve is more a toy than a game.  basically a game defines your goals, where a toy needs you to define them yourself.... ie, a deck of cards  is a toy, poker is a game you play with them.

Agreed... and my answer is also WoW.

Check out Chronicles of Spellborn.  It's pretty decent for a free game.

I would play a game where I can only have one toon per server, like old SWG.  I wouldn't play a game that didn't let me make alts on different servers.

Your opinion on the games performance is as subjective as is the review in question.  Its obvious not everyone has the same opinion of the games playability as you do.

That is my point exactly.... back at ya.  ;)

You think 15 pfs is fine, I do not.  We probably have different favorite bands, movies, food... taste and preference are subjective.  Reviews are subjective in nature, as they are based on the opinion and experience of the reviewer.  If we wanted a list of features without the opinion of a reviewer, we could get that from the developer. If this guy was dishonest in his review, I applaud the decision to take it down.... but taking it down doesn't erase the serious problems this game faces, no matter how much the fanboys wish it would.

Actually the review wasnt harsh but the score was.  The review was also poorly writen leeding me to wonder who is proofreading the submissions on this site.

I don't agree with that point specifically.  I'm not trying to pick a fight with you.  A lot of people have made the same point here, and I just think it's silly.   Why is 6 of ten seen as a terrible review?  What are 1-5 for??  It seems like most of the people here want the review scale to be 8-10, and that is just absurd to me.  10 is a perfect score, so 8 and 9 are damn near perfect.  Very few people think Fallen Earth is anywhere near a perfect, so why should it get anything higher than 6 or 7?

IMO, no number of innovative features can make up for the combination of poor performance and lackluster graphics.  If I had 20 positive things to say about this game, and my one negative was that performance was terrible, I would rate the game pretty low.  None of the features matter if the game runs like crap.

I could even understand a terrible frame-rate if the graphics were amazing... at least then it would be justified.  If other games can manage to produce stunning graphics with a smooth frame-rate, then it's reasonable to expect it, and reasonable to complain when a game doesn't produce those results.  I don't judge a game on a curve simply because it's developed by a bunch of armatures with no budget.  All i care about is how it plays, looks and runs.  If they can't compete with the big boys, that's their problem, not mine.

Again... I am not deafening the review or the reviewer.  My comments are based on my personal experience with this game.
