Subscription-based is the only way for me. The moment micro-transactions get involved, it changes the relationship between the game developer/publisher and the player. With a sub, you pay once and everyone has access to the exact same content and then it's up to the game to keep you coming back for more. But with F2P and micro-transactions, the goal is to get you to use the cash shop -- it's a different goal, and it shows.

I've tried F2P-type games and B2P games. I've never stayed with them for more than a month. They leave a bad taste in my mouth, and generally just annoy the heck out of me.

What's the point of a game if the people in it don't all play by the same rules? Once you can buy better stuff using real life money, then it's not a fair game anymore.

It won't help. The name was tarnished beyond repair after the dreadful launch. In the MMO world, it is *very* rare for any game to come back after badly flubbing its launch. Vanguard was, as has been said earlier, a greatly anticipated game. Even after the ugliness regarding the dev and the producers (Microsoft then SOE), there was still a lot of hope it would be a great game. When that sort of hope and anticipation is crushed so thoroughly, that's it for the game ever becoming a big player in the future. It might still hang around, as Vanguard has, but it'll never be great or well-populated. That's just how it is.

It wouldn't bother me at all if all F2P games shut down. When I found out that GW2 used programming that altered drop rates for certain items depending on how much they were going for in the Game Store, I was left with a sour taste in my mouth and quit not too long afterwards. I came to realize that F2P games alter things to nudge you to buy from their store and fill their pockets. Personally, I'd much rather spend a fixed amount of money and not wonder whether drop rates were being manipulated or if certain items simply could not be found in-game. It just changes the whole relationship between game and gamer, IMO. But, I guess some people like it that way, and that's their business, I just won't contribute to it.

Keep in mind that if you're getting differing amounts of content depending on how much you pay, then you're actually playing different, but similar, games. A game where you get X amount of content isn't the same game as one where you get X+(Purchased Y) content. I like to play in games where everyone has (potentially, anyway) the same access to content -- where it's a level playing field. I don't like the feeling that I might be getting gypped, or some other guy is paying to get ahead rather than earning what he got through gameplay.

I generally keep publishers and devs separate. Yes, they both have mouths to feed, but one of them exists solely to sell games while the other exists to make them. Devs, at least, are able to view us as gamers rather than people who have money; also, many of them have a genuine desire to make a great game, but are sometimes not given enough latitude to do so. How many Dev studios, for example, has EA bought and then destroyed? So that's why I tend to keep them separate in the way.

As for WoW: I don't think it forced any hands (except in the way greed can "make" someone do something), I think it attracted the attention of people who were more money-focused than before. Where before, yeah, money was important, you still had a lot of Idea Guys running around with a passionate desire to make the best games they could, and *that* was one of the main (if not *the* main) impetus to creating a game, not profit. In short, WoW made expectations change and brought in a lot of big money guys.

Maybe the game industry is starting to be viewed more as a "mature" industry and less as a "growth" industry. *If* that should happen, then the need to constantly improve margins will decrease and the idea of sustained revenue will start to become the leading goal of publishers. This would be good for all of us as it might mean games will be made more with the idea of keeping subscribers (or whatever) over the long haul, which means they might actually try to create things we want rather than things that make them the most cash -- a balancing between the game vs profit scale, if you will. That's my hope, but I'm far from sure that it'll happen that way.

I agree, the market adjusts to what companies think people want. The longer dev times for MMOs means that the mark is sometimes hard to gauge. Most of what we see in the MMO market is just ad reaction as it is planning. Had it been foreseen that so many companies would create similar games some probably would have designed differently. The broadening of gameplay is happening a little late.

I would disagree that where we are today has a lot to do with what Devs thought would work. It has more to do with publishers than devs. These days, most publishers are all about money -- about profit and price per share. The Money-pigs demand ever-more profit, so the publishers look for ways to monetize the games, to draw as much cash off of those who play it as they possibly can. It is *this* attitude which has changed the way MMOs are developed, as the publishers hold the purse-strings, and the money-pigs dictate to the publishers: if the devs want to be able to put food on the table, then they have to obey, even if it means creating games designed to maximize profit.

At this point, an increasing segment of gamers are starting to see the results of the above and are growing increasingly dissatisfied about it. Publishers try to both imagine a game gamers want to play *and* a game that will maximize revenues, and if those two things conflict, they are going for revenues. They use the AOL method of selling: using marketing to appeal to people who aren't really gamers or are only marginally interested in gaming, and they succeed, since those people are effectively fresh meat. But most people in this segment of the market are *still* not gamers, and so after a while they *move on* to something else, and just like AOL, the publishers run out enough people to bring in and their revenue figures start to flatline or (horrors!) decline. Eventually the marginal gamers flock to something new and bam, the producers start to cut expenses, the game stops getting updated so much, servers start to look barren, servers merge, false hope statements come from the pubs/devs that New Things are on the horizon when the only goal is to keep the money rolling in as long as possible as the company execs start using their golden parachutes before heading off to look for a new company where they can rinse and repeat what they did before.

What we want has hardly anything to do with any of the above, because to publishers, it's not a game and we're not gamers: It's a product (a widget) and we're consumers. Our relationship with them is based on money, not on any love of games or gaming. If we offer them something that might improve their margins, they may well listen to us, but if it's only about improving the game, forget it. Yes, there are other factors, and I *am* simplifying things a bit, but not too much, IMO, and it's not just MMOs that are being treated this way: it's all throughout the electronic gaming genre. They will only really listen to our wallets, so if you want things to change, that's really the only way it will happen, I think.

I'm pretty sure they've already sold a good chunk of their nuclear device technology to Iran, if not to other places as well. However, I was talking about nuclear devices themselves, and *that* is something that could come back to bite them in the rear if they actually sold that stuff. As I said earlier, we have ways of tracking where a nuclear device came from.

IMO, there's a big difference between selling someone tech and selling someone actual physical devices. You need certain things to make use of tech, otherwise the information is useless. Nations like Iran could make use of technical knowledge, but terrorist organizations? I doubt it. OTOH, giving someone an actual physical device means that whomever has it just needs to know how to depress the proverbial button, and that *is* something a terrorist organization could easily manage to do.

NK talks a lot of smack. They rattle their sabers a lot. They know, or think they know, that we're not likely to respond in kind. I would be surprised (and probably dismayed) if we did. OTOH, if one of their nukes, of any size, were to get loose and be used, then we *would* act. I don't think any of us believes that we would hold back if a NK-originated nuke was used in an aggressive manner. I can't imagine that NK is dumb enough not to realize that we'd retaliate if something like that were to happen. Yes, it's nice sometimes to demonize the NK government, and most of the time it's probably called for, but I myself just can't believe that they'd be unaware of the consequences of allowing a nuke device they created to be used aggressively by anyone.

So, in closing, I think there's a big difference between selling nuclear tech and nuclear devices, and while I think NK would sell the former, I can't imagine that they'd be dumb enough to sell the latter.

I expect they will sell (and probably are selling) their missile technology, but they'd be utter fools to sell actual nuclear devices: we can trace them back if they're ever used.

Part of being part of the nuclear community is that you're responsible for what happens to any nukes you create. If NK "accidentally" allows someone else to get a hold of one of their nukes which is then used to attack someone, NK will be held responsible, and it wont be pretty for them. If that were to proven to have happened, I would be the first to advocate dropping a *strategic* nuke on Pyongyang, which would almost certainly wipe the entire city off the map.

BTW, strategic nukes are big -- far bigger than anything NK has been able to create (their latest test was a divice with Hiroshima-sized destructive capability: very small by today's standards).

Because all the major powers know when NK does a nuclear test. There is no point in trying to hide the fact. And if you can't hide it, then why not brag? The idea, IMO, is to make their nuke arsonal seem like a viable threat, whether it is intended for self-defense (we hope) or aggression (we hope not).

Regardless, IMO, NK has every right to pursue a nuclear program. So long as they don't use nuclear weapons against another country (or allow someone to use their nuclear weapons on another country), I have no problem with them having nukes.

Rather than putting this in terms of "F2P games suck", I'll address my viewpoint a bit differently.

I will not play any game that allows someone an advantage simply because they're willing to spend more RL money on buying things within the game. When you play WoW or EQ or LotR Online, all subscribers have access to the same rules, items, classes, etc. The only exception to this are expansions, but everyone who stays current on the latest expansion is, again, at the same competitive level (this, BTW, is why I get annoyed when a company releases expansions too frequently).

F2P games that have a item malls provide players with an advantage in exchange for RL cash. I believe that is inherently unfair. Furthermore, in some instances, you *have* to buy items in order to ensure your character remains viable as he progresses in the game: you hit a level where the non-store bought equipment just isn't cutting it.

I'm not talking about a gaming company's business model per se. Obviously, they want to make money. But for me, if I'm playing a game, then it should be fair to all who are playing it, not about who has a lot of money to throw around in RL.

Thus, I think games that have item malls are inherently unfair. I wont play them. I wont even install them on my computer. I don't care how well they're made or how enticing they may be. And, if I find a P2P game using similar methods, I'll treat it the same way.

I liked the Macross saga, but the other two were pretty meh for me.

It's no surprise that neither the Mexican nor the American governments are telling us the truth about the severity of the crisis.  Manipulating what we know is second nature for them.

It should also be no surprise that the vaccines don't work. They've already said that this is a totally different strain than what has been encountered previously. As such, standard vaccines aren't going to work. They're being distributed solely as a morale booster and, possibly, to prevent the spread of other kinds of influenza.

As for me, I'm curious to see if this flu changes at some point into something more lethal. Remember that viruses like influenza often mutate as they spread. Also, different genetics respond slightly differently to infection, so that could increase or decrease how lethal the virus becomes in specific populations.

Do quests. Do lots and lots of quests. Quests almost always provide the best XP for the amount of time you put in. Also, make sure the quests you do are reasonably difficult (but not too hard) so that you get good XP/rewards for your level.

Finally, if your friend is level 80, see if he'll loan you some gold and buy good gear with it (not *great* gear -- good gear). Remember that as you level up, you will out-grow your gear, so there is no reason to spend a lot of money on the best stuff for your level.

While I agree with an earlier poster that WoW is as much about the journey as the destination, if you have a really good reason for rushing to the endgame stuff, then that's the best way to do it.

Oh, one more thing... remember to learn how to play your class. It wont do you much good if you rush to 80 and still don't know half of what your can do in a group.

As someone who served in the US Navy for 6 years (1988-1994), the article doesn't surprise me in the least. I was fortunate: my ship didn't have any women serving on it. However, I heard stories from guys who transferred in from other ships that had started having women on board. I've heard a couple of stories like the ones mentioned by Aetius73. I remember being told (by people who were currently serving on it) about how the USS Gompers had to break off from a major deployment (a WestPac) and come back to home port because so many women had tested pregnant that they couldn't maintain their manning level; the Captain was relieved of command. People started calling it the Love Boat.

I heard about a woman who went to Captain's Mast (the Navy's version of non-judicial punishment) because she hadn't cashed any of her paychecks in 3 months but had a couple of thousand dollars in her possession... that is, she was selling it. I heard stories about guys going into remote spaces to do maintenance and coming across people doing the deed. I heard about the fights and friction in divisions, sometimes caused intentionally, due to who was shacking up with who. I heard about how women in my rating (Machinist's Mate) would get out of doing the nasty jobs or the ones that required some heavy lifting, and how guys would have to take up the slack.

Were all these stories true? Probably not. Many were (the Gompers definitely was true).

As for the issue with sexual misconduct. There is no excuse for rape. But some people use rape as a tool to get even with someone: all it takes is an allegation, and that person is in the hurt locker.

And I haven't even talked about combat troops... mixing women in with them is just crazy. All you guys who've never spent any time in the military have no idea what it's like. The military is NOT a reflection of society as a whole. There are pressures and situations that arise in the military that are unique to it. You can prattle on about how outraged you are, but you're just clueless. No amount of explaining or watching videos at home can give you a good understanding of how things really are. Yes, there are exceptions... there's a whole range of situations, but mostly it's not as pretty or refined -- not as civilized -- as many suppose. The vagarities of human nature are intensified, and any set up which does not take human nature into account is doomed to a bad result, and in this case a lot of women (and men) end up suffering for it.

When you get something for free, you rarely place much value on it. If you don't value something, then you put little or no effort into taking care of it, and are likely to get rid of it at a whim.

Canada is still extremely liberal/socialist in its outlook. If it seems to be looking better these days, it's only by comparison to our own country, IMO. Besides, Canada has its' own problems. The grass may look greener there, but if you lived there for a while, your perception of it might change.

As for the OPs points... while the leadership of the GOP was decidedly neo-con during Bush's time in office, many rank-and-file Republicans were still somewhat paleo-con in outlook, but had willingly allowed themselves to be duped into thinking Bush's policies were a good thing: they were in a "willful suspension of disbelief".  With Obama, that did not exist and so their truer, supressed ideals came back out and, of course, they're still blind to their own hypocracy, unlike those who were not duped by Bush.

Yes, I find the whole thing very ironic. Not really amusing except as I find irony amusing. I truely despise those who were all behind Bush's big government and expansionist policies and are now decrying the same sorts of things in Obama. I and many others repeatedly warned what would happen if Bush were allowed to get his way, and we were ignored or ridiculed. The chickens are only just beginning to come home to roost, and already many on the Right are crying about it. Too bad. Now it's too late to do anything to stop this, and they carry much of the blame. Let them reap what they've sown.
