looking for a game with ultima like skill system
LFGame « General Discussion 8/21/08 11:26:19 PM
Basically your looking for a UO-esque game that is free? me too, but you won't even find a p2p game like UO. UO is the first mmorpg, and the last one that will ever be done well, that's why there's still so many free servers. I played it since phase1 beta though and it's nearly impossible for me to play it again, the only acception in which I would play it again is if the free server had re-built the world Serpent Isle style and that is never going to happen because strangely enough most die hard UO fans left are not fans of Ultima VII. The skill system isn't the only unique aspect of UO, the housing system, the attention to detail, the graphics, although they are 2d, they are the best 2d graphics ever made for an mmorpg hands down. And although I look forward to Diablo3, I look more forward to Guildwars2, but I wish those games would be more like UO, since EA is the most evil game company to ever exist UO2 will probably never happen as it was cancelled twice, but if it ever does get made I bet it will not resemble the Ultima series or UO in any way shape or form except having poor customer support and corrupt GMs. |

I know EA owns Ultima, but it can't be that difficult to build a new fantasy world considering a big portion of the Ultima series were generic d&d terms that EA does not own, and he still owns Lord British with associated symbols, he doesn't need to toss that character into the new world but he could if he wanted to, what made Ultima good was it's storyline and attention to detail, all he needs to make an Ultima-esque game is a team dedicated to making a great game. |

What MMO are you currently playing and why?

The day one of these companies gets it right I'll take back this statement, until then I won't hold my breath, and I'm not racist, just bad games continually happen to pour out of this country, this isn't a steriotype it's fact. |

Player-housing can be both good and bad, the only game I've ever played that came close to doing it right was UO, but I agree with the other poster that said it would be ideal if the houses were already existing in the game and the players could rent, that would take lag and rushing for house spots and camping for idocs out of the picture. When I play an mmorpg I want to focus on an attainable goal, maybe it's being on the top of a ladder, maybe it's being the archlord, but those two are not attainable to me because I'm just a casual player, if there were a lot of houses, this would be an easier goal to reach. The ideal concept for player-housing in an mmorpg to me would be have the houses serving a purpose in the game, not only helping your own character but somehow helping other players, causing it to be a natural cycle in the game, like peasant, knight, warlord, home-owning sage, and ascended avatar. I think such a system would be beyond perfect but I've yet to see it ever come to light in any game I've ever played. If I had a billion dollars, after the donating and whatnot I'd comission this mmorpg and it would be free to play. |

Before I start this topic I'd like to say that I'm looking forward to 2 games and only 2 games that I know of: Guild Wars 2 & Diabo 3, because they are the only high quality games I know of which are said to be 100% free after the purchase of the game itself. I wish there were more games like this, the first and last game I ever payed for (having a monthly fee) was Ultima Online, and I quit paying when it was still $9.99 a month sometime around 2001. Since I was in the beta I didn't feel too ripped off. Ultima X, anyone familliar with the failed project I am not in any way going to focus on that game at all. I just want to put out a question to see how many Ultima fans exist on these boards, not Ultima Online fans, but Ultima the series fans, not Electronic Arts fans but Richard Garriott fans. This is a very far fetched question but, I was considering if I ever became extremely wealthy that one thing I would consider would be the purchase of the rights of the Ultima series. EA being a major monopoly on the gaming market has had a number of failures recently, and perhaps by the time I have enough money they will be so sick of Ultima Online and the rest of the series that they'd sell it for dirt cheap I don't know. The question is, do you think EA would ever sell Ultima? What I would do after the purchase would be to collaborate with Richard Garriott and build Ultima X Online, the way UO2 could have been but wasn't. If Richard was no longer among the living at this point I would simply call the project Ultima VII Online, or Serpent Isle Online, and I would focus the project around Serpent Isle, perhaps making SI the expansion and first releasing the Black Gate. It would not be UO graphics but fully re-done, the magic weapons would glow just as they did in Ultima VII yet of course in stunning 3d. After deleting Ultima Online and all servers and kicking all players in the ass for being such idiots, I would give them all a voucher for some worthless item that they could claim in Ultima 7 Online. The world would be similar to UO, except the main quests would be fully NPC automated, something UO never did. There would be a working bounty system among mounts, and even permanent housing options, but a major change would be the ripoff of Archlord, there would be 1 single Avatar per server, and similar to Archlord, he would reign for a certain period of time and could be challenged, and would have special powers. There would be 1 Guardian per sever as well. The storyline would be EXACTLY like Ultima VII, except maybe tiny side quests which wouldn't matter overall. There would be many types of currencies, and there would be various races to choose from. Just wanted to throw that fantasy out there. |

This is an old post but I just wanted to give details about RYL, I thought that game was cool because I only played it for 1 week, it's cool for a week but on week 2 I found out that the myths of player-built structures was abandoned and swept under the carpet yet people still collect housing tools not asking why, the pvp is pretty much non existant except for the in-town pvp where you have to agree to the fight, the world seems large but once you've been everywhere it seems far too small. All in all it's fun for 1 week period, the graphics are what tricked me, they are fully 3d, yet the requirements needed to play this game are so incredibly low that I could play the game fine on my laptop that has no 3d card whatsoever, I don't know how these asians can make fully 3d games play so smoothly on a laptop with a super crappy non-3d accelerator card, which leads me to believe that the games shoved down the USA market are purposely built with impossibly slow 3d engines so users are forced to buy new computers or cards to simply play them, an example I can't even play tron 2.0 a 1999 game, I'm buying a new computer soon but until then I'm forced to play 2d games, excepting the few 3d games that will run on my system. |

Why dont they make another Ultima type mmo?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 8/28/07 7:40:28 AM
I agree with the thread starter, I paid 1k for a laptop and it has no 3d card so I can only play 2d games on it, but, I prefer 2d games anyway, I have another computer that I used for guildwars for a while but I'd love to see a diablo III, or an ultima-7 style rpg, when I say ultima 7 I mean literally, graphics and story to rival it, which of course is practically impossible, nowadays all the g4 watching mindless halo losers care about is cheats and super good graphics, they need the cheats to beat the games that are extremely easy to begin with, what's up with g4 anyway those people are losers, they said eq came before any other mmorpg, when uo came out 2 years before eq. I would prefer to play a uo type game with a diablo type budget, someone should eventually make one, but the corporate whores all they care about is charging you 15 bucks a month for a piece of 3d crap, maybe they don't think they'd get nearly 9 bucks a month if it was 2d which is why they don't even bother. The experts on g4 I noticed one of em called 1st person 3rd person and vice versa idiots, anyway 2d = better than 3d, 3rd person is better than 1st, my opinion of course, but it's sad most people who read this don't know the best game ever made is called The Black Gate & Serpent Isle, the average gamer of today without cheats or walkthroughs could never finish this game before their own deaths, that's how lazy ass and mindnumbingly pathetic the gamers of today are. |

It's called 'Risk Your Life 2', and the original for that matter 'Risk Your Life'. Horrible name, probably the worst name for a fantasy mmorpg I've ever heard, yet the best one I've played in a long time.
The official website is at: http://www.ryl2.com.my I highly recommend this game, it is better than WoW, too cartoony hyped and crowded, better than guildwars, unlike guildwars it's not a corpg but an actual massive mapped mmorpg, gameplay, control, guild system, 3d graphics, system requirements, everything about this game is amazing in my opinion considering the fact that it is 100% free download and play for life. Why is it not on the game list? My real recommendation is to hire or recruit people that actually update the game list on a regular basis or adjust the list to be automated somewhat so people can add and the site admins can accept or reject submissions, because I have personally found hundreds of mmorpgs not listed, 75% are crap, but at least 25% are worthy of being on the list. |

Are there any new Ultima style games?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 10/01/06 10:56:01 PM
I'm looking for an Ultima type game, such as Ultima VII: The Black Gate or Serpent Isle, do any exist? I stopped playing UO 5 years ago and I'm glad, as I see it's even worse today, I'm not looking for a UO-style game, but more of an original Ultima-style game, countless items, insane detail, maybe games like that aren't made anymore, but if anyone knows please let me know thanks.
