Such as 3d, 2d, game company country, since RPG is part of mmorpg, it would be nice to seperate non-rpg and rpg games, and fantasy can be broken up into different catagories, medieval european fantasy, etc. I think the 3d/2d would be most needed, more and more people are getting laptops, 95% of which don't have 3d accelerators, forcing those people to choose 2d only mmorpgs, 2d is not inferior to 3d, without 2d 3d cannot exist, for those that think 2d is worthless, consider without 2d 3d models cannot be painted with 2d paint to look like anything realistic, 2d is not obsolete and never will be due to this fact. Since mmorpg does not break it down into 2d/3d it forces anyone who plays on a laptop to google other game sites that do have 2d game lists. |

Travian, played it for 1 second, quit because it just feels too clunky to me, Evony I'm still playing after 1 week solid, I'm sure I'll get bored of it, and for some reason people complain it 'takes too long to build', it's not a game to replace your game console, it's a slow game something to replace mafia wars, it's game that you only play 30 minutes a day, I like it, the only thing I don't like about it is the map, it's endless and has no structure, if you choose a continent it doesn't make any difference because all continents are identicle in appearance, except for the 'random' things thrown about, and you never really fight against other countries from what I've seen, you can only fight against your neighbor, so the fake map aspect makes it pretty generic feeling, and if they made structured maps with actual ocean boundaries, etc, it would be better. |

Tired of being a sucker to MMO hype
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 10/10/09 1:14:09 AM
The only game that I can thing of where I 'bought into the hype' would be warhammer online, that game in my opinion is not worth 1 dollar a month let alone 12 bucks or whatever it is, the reason I bought into the hype is because I bought the game before it was released, if you buy the game before it's released you risk being greatly dissapointed, most other games I've played I bought them months after they came out so I was able to read and see what the game was really like, darkfall for example, saw what the game was *really* like, never bought it, the only games that I bought when they first came out where I was not disappointed would have to be diablo1 and 2, those games are so solid people actually play them today, their greatly outdated but I didn't feel ripped off |

Never come between a fat man and his chicken

maybe they were slow serving him but his reaction was over the top, one time I stopped at a mcdonalds w/ my gf and she went to the bathroom but I couldn't cuz it was locked with a sign saying 'customers only', yet the womens bathroom was unlocked with no sign, so I was a little ticked off and tried to mention to the manager that discrimination against males is illegal, the sign might as well say no blacks, I didn't flip out like the chicken guy but I think I had a right to |

Why isn't Diablo 3 included in the game list?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 10/06/09 11:28:34 PM
Sounds like half of you don't know what an MMORPG is, the inventor, creator, of the acronym M.M.O.R.P.G. was Richard Garriott aka Lord British, he dubed that term because according to him and he being the creator has a right to choose what is technichally an mmorpg and what isn't, but MASSIVE = 1,000+ players on one static map in one server, period, I'm not sure if Meridian 59 ever broke that record but UO broke the record for 12,000+ players online in 1997, I was there testing when they broke the record, so some could argue massive is 10,000, I would say it's at least 1,000 personally, Diablo I, II, III and any of those other CORPG games don't even remotely come close to 1,000, but I would guess even 100 people on 1 map some would consider to be massive, and thus Guild Wars allowing at least 100 people in the city areas will technichally qualify it as closer to mmorpg than corpg even though you are forced to join a small party to explore, I hope Diablo III will be an mmorpg, at least a tiny scale one allowing more than freaking 8 people per map, when the Diablo 3 forum came up and they took suggestions mine was make it fully mmorpg, or at least make a town trade city server where at least 100 players can trade, it is a pain in the ass making 100 and joining 1,000 games to hawk your goods in diablo 2, it's so annoying that it's one of the main reasons I didn't play the game after beating it. Speaking of mmorpgs, I'm looking for a 2d or 2d attempting to look like 3d mmorpg, similar to UO. |

Any way you slice it, looks like I was right, they fudged what their engine was capable of, they and their fans boasted the next UO, not only is it not the next UO, but it's not even close, when will a company copy UO? that's what I want to know, they all are copying something, and their copying the wrong thing, I can see a whole new crop of WoW clones, a clone of a clone of a xerox of a xerox of a clone of a clone, WoW sucks, so assume I've ever been a wow fan and you'd be wrong, I would like to see the following impossible currently maybe in 10 years it won't be impossible but considering it's my preferences, what I look for in an mmorpg and have yet to see, I consider it currently impossible, apparently I have impossible standards but this is what I will be looking for... NPCs that have daily schedules, they work in the day, they go to sleep at night in their individual NPC houses and sleep in their beds (yes very Black Gate/Serpent Isle). A housing system, rentable, purchasable, strict one per account, houses are not destroyable, they are decayable but you can purchase in game with gold to have your house maintained by a housekeeper npc for up to 6 months, I've been guilty of forgetting about a game for 1 month but anyone who forgets up to 6 months deserves to have it fall, housing should only be for the rich players, the houses are *NOT* instanced, seriously whats the point of a house if only you can see it, a house cannot play a role in the enviornment of the game if it is instanced, if you don't know what instanced means please don't bother reading further. Automated quests, the exact opposite of wow-style automated quests, if you enjoy doing the same quest over 1,000 times you are retarded, this is my opinion, I personally can think of 1,000 different, unique quests, I'm not gonna list them out, want to hear them? hire me to work for your bigshot game company, some quests should be enviornmental while some should be personal per player while some should be NPC automated, but there need to be quests that challenge the gamer, mazes, complicated puzzles, translating languages, and not having these things done by themself, quests that force the mindless to think and if they can't think they fail, these quests I have yet to see in any mmorpg to date. Complex crafting system, many crafting classes and countless, hundreds of thousands of items, some useful, some useless. Clothing and avatar customization, clothing should be endless in color and combinations if it's not you will end up with WoW, everyone looks like the clone they are, players should have the choice of making their characters fat, skinny, tall, short, old, young, on and on, most games today have everyone at the same age, height and weight, maybe I want to be a short fat guy, since the choice doesn't exist in most mmorpgs everyone ends up looking the same. Complex magic system, different magic classes, etc etc, I've already typed too much, but this is just an example of what I'm looking for, if any game even has a majority of these things I would be interested in buying it. I would make this game myself if I were rich but I'm not, I know if this game existed it would blow every mmorpg out of the water. |

General: New Blizzard MMO Not an Existing IP
News Discussion « General Discussion 5/21/09 3:53:24 AM
Hopefully Blizzard rips off some Ultima VII, The Black Gate & Serpent Isle lore and gameplay off, along with what was good about UO, basically the exact opposite of Wow, a game that actually has depth, but knowing blizz I won't hold my breath |

General: Garriott Lawsuit Raises Questions
News Discussion « General Discussion 5/18/09 6:31:39 AM
Those that think Garriott is a 'jerk' don't know him, he's the smartest game developer on the planet, if he thinks he has a case he's going to win. I'm sure NCsoft will claim he just wants some money to pay for the expensive space trip which I heard was either 20 or 30mil, but this is a too obvious excuse, Garriott isn't a greedy person, he's the type of guy that spends 1million dollars on making his house a haunted house over the years just for the kids free of charge, anyway I still think he's gonna win. About all of you claiming he isn't a genius because Tabula Rasa wasn't a financial success, the game industry is politics but even if the game was not great I would say it's because it's the first game Garriott had full control over since the Ultima series, and since he sold the rights to that series in the early 90's to EA he legally couldn't use his best ideas, he had to legally do something radically different, it just happened to be too different, I heard Garriott is going to produce a new next generation fantasy mmorpg to exceed UO, I believe this will take place, EA has no chance of exceeding UO because they never made it, Origin did and they laid off the entire staff of that original company like the idiots they are. WoW is crap because it's endgame content is capture the flag, WAR is crap because it's mostly capture the flag, Darkfall is crap for other reasons, but lets face it, no mmorpg has yet to even scratch the surface of UO, and I'm not talking about graphics for those too superficial to know what I'm talking about. For those who have played Ultima VII, you know that game is amazing, and for those that know Richard Garriott know most of his inspiration for the Ultima series was from Dungeons & Dragons, a game I've never played but, the inspiration for that game is generic fantasy myth and lore of old, lore that isn't copyrighted, Garriott can easily build a new Ultima-esque game without breaking any of the copyright laws, I'd like to help Garriott build this next generation mmorpg, do you know Garriott coined the term mmorpg? he did. He is the father of the mmorpg, UO was the first mmorpg, not online rpg but massive being the key, UO was the first online game that had 12k people on 1 server at the same time I was there when the historic event took place in 1997, don't remember the exact date but it was in phase 2 of the beta test. Garriott once said, and I paraphrase, 'to make a good game you need to be inspired', Perhaps his experience with EA drained a lot of his inspiration, but his trip to outer space likely jump started his inspiration, whether he wins this lawsuit or not I believe he will head the next generation mmorpg, blowing phoney superficial copycat mmorpgs like WoW out of the water. |

MMORPG Companies: Fake, Real & Gritty Screenshots
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 3/23/09 7:19:22 PM
The new MMORPGs yet to be released, I'd like to know what they look like before I buy them. This is a message to MMORPG companies that think they know what their potential consumers want. We don't want the most polished piece of turd to come out of your graphics department, mocked up, plastered and passed off as a "Screenshot", that is not a screenshot and you know it. We the potential consumer want a REAL screenshot we want a GRITTY screenshot. Fake: Polished mocked up turd shot from the graphics department. Real: An actual in-game gameplay screenshot. Gritty: Ugly icons, backpacks, cursors, avatars, the real game. If you do not provide the potential consumer with a real gritty screenshot, you will fail, good day to you, if you do not wish to provide real gritty screenshots your services will no longer be needed, if I wanted to look at a medieval painting I'd go to the louvre. |

Warlock, I'm glad Ozzy is a Warlock too, I don't have unlimited hours unlike many other wow players so I don't have time to ever see what other classes are even like, but I'll try deathknight when I'm lvl 55 |

Tabula Rasa: Garriott Announces Departure from NCsoft
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/18/08 2:06:51 PM
Richard Garriott aka Lord British is one of my heroes, even though I've never met him in real life I know he's a very cool guy full of inspiration, I've met him online in UO during the beta test 3 times, first was randomly at his castle second the same and the 3rd was when he was killed by Rainz at blackthorn's castle, anyway I've sent him completiton certificates from the Ultima series and he signed them and returned them that's how cool a guy he is, this was in 1999. Anyway I know he's the type of person that spends tons on halloween haunted houses just to make others happy, also I know he's the type of person that can't be tied down to a company he doesn't own and have full control of for too long, he's too talented and creative, and when he says he recieved inspiration in space he's not just using it as an excuse to leave NCsoft, he probably had a major vision of inspiration, hope he doesn't give up making one last great game, but if he does I'll still consider the Ultima series a greater trilogy than any, including books, I have almost every copy of the series, I'm missing Ultima II & III, but I consider the writing and depth in those games so great that they soar above such writings as lord of the rings or any other fantasy I've read, those that only know his Ultima series from UO I feel sad for, because they know virtually nothing of the Ultima lore which was so amazing that I'm inspired by them on a regular basis. I did get a chance to turn to the NASA channel and I missed his interview but I breifly saw him live in space, that was very cool to see. |

A perfect mmo for me is one that draws me in with a non-stop storyline that is consistant from beginning to end, I've yet to play a single mmorpg that has such a storyline, probably LOTR has it but I don't care for the movies so I doubt I'd care for the game... I'm looking for a story as good as the one I'm writing which I consider to be better than LOTR, yes arrogant opinion but nobody has read it yet except a select few so I wouldn't expect anyone here to believe me, it's just I really like in-depth storylines associated with complex quests and amazing pvp, good and evil options beyond anything any game has concieved of, and an attachment to ones character, the quests would be so complex it might take a month to complete a single one, and there would be few walkthroughs as all quests would be different for everyone, player housing and the threat of pk's around every corner in certain areas would add a great ammount to the RP aspect, roleplay being a standard and non RP-ers would be given only so many warnings before they would be re-named and/or deleted. |

I could only design it myself which would cost a few million dollars if not 1 billion, so I'm either gonna have to become rich or be annoyed at mmorpgs forever which is most likely but lately I've found just to be happy with the good features and ignore the lack of other features..... in wow I like everything except a few things and I try to ignore this it's worked so far.... if I had to name a few things the game lacks I'd say it would be: graphics, height/width face customizations with characters, player housing, the lack of being able to join low level dungeon groups, the lack of allowable skills, the few tiny things that take me out of the game like earthly jokes which shouldn't be repeated by NPCs on a regular basis in other words the lack of sotryline depth, and the lack of roleplayers but that's the mentality of the players. Those are just a few, the game is the funnest I've played since UO though so I'm not complaining that much. |

Lately is it just me but I've been hearing many celebish type people announce their dedication to WoW, I personally think it might have something to do with their desperate attempt at being noticed by the WoW movie people in an attempt to be in the up coming WoW movie.... sure the movie might be a flop but a fan would get a kick out of being in the movie, or maybe these celebs are just lonely and want someone to join their guild. |

Darkfall will be a flop, great graphics doesn't make a game, WARHAMMER proved that, great graphics are just that. Great Graphics, but playability, the FEEL of the game while actually walking around exploring etc is completley different from the screenshots, WoW is the best mmorpg on the market, in my opinion but it's a monopoly and supporting it is kinda like supporting the wal-mart of mmorpgs and I can see why people would not want to support it, it's a super trendy game that I purposely avoided with all my heart until about 1 month ago when I finally cracked and for the first time ever bought the game, I bought it because WARhammer claimed it was superior, and I can't take such info without a fair analysis of it's direct competition so I played both games for a month only to find WoW was 100x funner for me, WAR has potential but the fact that the pvp instances give tons of XP forces nobody to want to pve, making a MASSIVE multiplayer orpg feel like a Mini multiplayer orpg, with a diablo-like feel, 30+ ppl per instance, gets old fast. |

I've practically played em all from 1997 to now, WoW is the best, due to the fact that there are literally more choices to choose from among races, classes and professions, the combo of races/classes is important in roleplaying. You can roleplay without having to speak old english, but there are RP servers that have this except few actually roleplay in this manner but it's not impossible to find. |
