I am relitively new to online gaming. A few years. Gaming in general really. I enjoy a challenge. But a challenge with a purpose. I to this day can not understand the draw of games like Unreal and other online FPS. Running around a hundred miles an hour trying to get the drop on some poor slob is fun for maybe a half an hour if that. To me that is. But in MMORPGs I just don't see the point in bashing other players. They have nothing to do with my quests. I get nothing for it. And mainly it isn't what I would do if I were the character I am playing. I am not a RPer. That has it's merits. But I am in the virtual world to explore and enjoy trhe content. Not to see if I can beat down someone that is weaker than me. I can understand contests with prizes. One on one battles, party battles and so on. But with tangible items to gain. And not just fighting. Contest to see who can get through an area without killing anything or the least kills. Heck have scavenger hunts. Arenas to test your mettle for bragging rights as the most powerful wizard. If you remain undefeated for so many battles you are grand champion until you are deposed. This brings with it the use of a special spell or item bestowed by the local magistrate. Maybe gladiatorial battles to work off debt by entertaining those who would like to watch a battle. The better you perform the more debt you work off. Have a NPC croud that reacts like an applause meter based on how much smack down you achieve. Maybe avatars can pick an alignment. Good would obviously never harm the weak or anyone undeserving. The more shady alignments would and could do less reputable things like attack someone. But they themselves could be attacked by all good alignments as well as other shady alignments. Shady equals constantly in danger. If quests were joined in a way that two or more could be at odds with each other. So if solos or groups have opposing quests then the ensuing PVP would be quest related and actually have meaning and probably be tons of fun. There are always opposing factions in these games. This house hates that house, the theives guild being hounded by the local authority. And they all give quests. So it stands to reason that these quests goals would probably be at odds with one another. I think that is the perfect opportunity to pit players against each other. Have areas set up where you have to trap the opposing team. Use the environment to incapacitate as many of the other team as possible. While trying to keep your own team out of trouble. But no matter how much I think about PVP I can never seem to find a reason for it to be a free for all. Sad to say but people usually do not play by the rules. And one loser that killed another player just out of sheer mean stupidity is one too many in my book. I would never give weak willed people the chance to mess up the fun of others. I would love the chance to pit my skills and brains and tactics against another real person. But only if unbreakable rule sets are applied. Otherwise, I may never join in the mass hysteria that is PVP. |

In regards to maps. Maps are good. No maps are bad. Detailed maps are good. Many filters are good. Zooming maps are good. On off toggle for maps are good. Fog clearing as you adventure is good. Clear concise individual icons for people places and things are good. Clicking on party members who show on a map is good. Clicking on them and being able to chose to send a tell to them is good. The ability to mark permanent waypoints is good. Being able to remove those permanent waypoints that were mistakingly added is good. Maps always oriented North are good. Maps that absolutely do not rotate and change their orientation based on the direction you are traveling are good. Quests showing on maps are good. Quest givers showing on maps are good. Now that is all only my opinion. But if I were really hunting dragons and adventuring in ghoul infested swamps and what not, I would take copious notes. And I would constantly update the maps that I carried on my person and the ones I looted off the dead bodies of evil minions. Only the most brave or foolhardy venture blindly into the unknown. Heck, even Kirk used star charts. I would even go so far as to say we should be able to show our maps to others if we so desire. If I were approached by a wandering minstral that needed directions through the Dire Fell Black Blastedlands I would give him or her verbal as well as visual instructions. Hence a map. Or a stick and a clear patch of dirt. Maybe we could have dirt maps instead. So they ask directions and I pull out my trusty stick...er...map. I could then make a mark on their map. This would not clear the fog of an area they had yet to visit but it would give them a point deep in the fog to navigate towards. They would have to discover all the interesting small bits themselves. So as far as I am concerned that would actually help with making the world seem more real and interactive. No more spamming instructions and requests back and forth in the chat boxes. Instead a person could walk up to the nearest warm body, click on that person and then click on the tab in the drop down menu (which includes an instant Tell option among many others) for "Oh mighty warrior could you direct an unworthy underling?". No response would close the window and maybe make a derisive noise of some kind. And "yes" would open a private chat between the two, or the party and the person asked (so everyone in the party wouldn't have to individually ask the same question), and open everyones maps for the helpful X marks the general spot. For those who do not like maps they could make maps a quest item. If you want a map of the area you wish to adventure in, then you do the map quest for that area. So those that did not wish to use maps would choose not to do the map quests. I, like another poster mentioned, have a hard time navigating around in virtual worlds. In a game you tend to miss you peripheral vision which is used to orient yourself in space. Which in turn is used almost subconsciously in familiarizing your self with your surroundings. Recognizing where you are is a cumulation of many things seen and barely seen as well as the use of other senses. But we do not have that ability in a game. We have a pretty limited frontal view even with a camera pulled way back. And of course there are no scratch and sniff games yet so smelling where you are is definitely out. Sorry. Long story short. I think maps are very useful in a game. |

Lot of information to dig through. But I think I recall reading that your weapons will level with you and be upgradeable(word?) As I said I think I read that in one of the weekly biweekly interviews. I love the idea. I know that Sometimes it is a big let down to change weapons. You need the more powerful weapon but it looks like poo poo. It happens more with changing clothing and armor. But I know that there have been a few times where I almost didn't take a better weapon due to it's oogliness. Here is a question, should probably post it in Royce"s thread. But this is about weapons and armor/clothing. How many have played games where you could not preview the item before you picked it up? Or having multiple choices from a quest. Pick one of four items. They are all comparable, let's say, and you had no way of knowing what it would look like? So let's vote.
Hopefully everything in this game will be able to be previewed before accepting. It is especially frustrating with items that bind to you on pick up. So then you can't even sell the undesirable piece of gear. Here I am stuck running around in the fuchsia armor of everyoneshunsme for three more levels. Gotta love that. |

Hello Mr Royce, Haven't seen much traffic in this thread for awhile. Glad your back in action. Question about applying fore off site GM position. I applied a few weeks, 2 or 3, ago. Does the company contact you even if they aren't interested? Or is no news bad news? I know I shouldn't expect an answer this soon but you know how it is. I haven't been this excited about anything since I can remember. So probably shouldn't watch the pot because it will never boil. I like that they offer to train in other areas. And it comes as no surprise that other more experienced GMs like yourself are willing to help out dummies like moi. Sounds like what I would expect from you guys and gals. Just from what I have seen of your activity in this forum. At the least I would like some feedback on the quest I described. I told it in story form. Not sure if that was what they wanted. Probably not. If that is the case think I should reapply? Or just wait? I guess What I really want to know is...Why haven't they called me yet? They never call, they never write... Well, maybe I am in store for a change of fortune. Maybe even underwear. Who knows? Thanks. One day you might be teaching me to code. |

I like the idea of cut scenes to overlay loading into a zone. Someone made the comment that they thought that would get repetitive. Then someone else responded with how could it be more repetitive than a static screen. I agree. If there must be loading, and I haven't personally seen any games that didn't have it, wether that be online or single player, then my vote would go for a cut scene of some sorts. It seems like the general gaming world pretty much hates loading screens. And so it goes without saying that the game developing community is aware of this perceived problem with gaming. If the decision was made to include loading between sections of the game, outside areas or the insides of homes and shops or where ever, then I find it hard to belive it wasn't needed. And because I have no knowledge of code writing, game design, or server networking I would be an idiot to say out right that a company was implementing these loading times just to save money or because they can't write code properly. So that said...hopefully they will also be inventive in this area as well as other game aspects they have hinted at. I am going to stay hopeful. Either we are being handed a load of mer or this game is going to be as revolutionary as we hope. When I am staring at a long or short loading screen I can't help but wonder what is going on behind the scenes. Is it so cpu or gpu intensive that I have to remain static? Or could I, say, open the gate to another part of the city and it load while I am walking down a short, hopefully short, tunnel? Or like how emotes are set up using my Avatars character model. Could door opening between zoned rooms be done as an emote and use my Avatar in a door opening emote- like cut scene? At the very least show my character twiddling his or her thumbs in frustration, or scuffing his shoes while waiting for the magic area to load. Not sure if that is the same thing as a cut scene. And I realize if you had a door opening emote that people would complain about the doors in the cut scene being different than the door you were actually trying to open in the game. Even if it took longer than it normally would for my avatar to compleat the animation of opening a door, I think that would be preferable to the standard static information or concept art screen. Or even better yet, everyone in the game could randomly upon character creation have assigned to them a spirit guide, which we could name of course. This guide would only appear at these moments, any time loading to a zone was required. The possibilities of interaction between you and the guide are endless. Make it comic relief, game hints, comments on your playing style, letting you know if anyone on your friends list is in the zone you are about to enter, quest reminders, etc. I can just see it now. I am about to zone and my guide, or curse as some might think of them, pops in to tell me what a complete moron I was in bartering with merchant Bob. And how if he were still alive he would disown me. And if he had a foot he would... I would spend all day zoning and would pine for the companionship of my crotchety old ancestral/magical/mythical/imaginary friend. Heck, these little bothersome freaks might be so enjoyable and informative the game designers might have to give YOU a reminder that loading is done. That is when I click on the button saying I am not done talking to Jiffy the Great...Or maybe Jiffy will get bored and tell me it's time to zone already. Personally I will be petitioning the developers to allow Jiffy the Great to give me in zone hints as well. Like "Hey idiot, the Zoltar tower is in the 'other' West". I miss Jiffy already...

How about you describe what you would consider a great gaming moment in Heroes' Journey. It can be anything. From a quest to crafting. Yes even PVP encounters are welcome here. It could just include things that have been hinted at about game mechanics. Or what you think game play should be like. Who knows. If instead of arguing, we describe what a good time is comprised of, maybe the powers that be will take note and it could become reality. I shall start. Today I logged on and feel like soloing. I go to my house from the inn I had stayed at the night before; a good way to avoid the authorities. I knew they would have been watching my house after my daring theft and the accidental demise of the items previous owner. I need a change of clothes to further avoid the notice of those I would rather have concentrating on others. After a quick change of clothing and switching out my weapons I head over to a shady character I know in another part of town. She usually has a few odd jobs that I can handle on my own. She is strictly small time. On my way to the "job" I make a wrong turn and end up in a alley that I have never seen. My luck is great as usual. Someone has recently used this out of the way place to stash some ill gotten booty, or ill bootn gotty. It always pays in this city to check out the dark out of the way places, you never know what you may stumble upon. But as in this case you have to take the good with the bad. As soon as I picked up what seemed to be my next months room and board the stashers picked that moment to drop by. Good thing this was a shadowy spot. Only three of them. Almost a fair fight...but for whom? Being a sneaky sort of fellow I did just that. Once behind the one that appeared the most dangerous, dangerous meaning he was very big and ugly and had a huge club in his belt, I struck. Big and ugly dropped like a rotten tree in a high wind. Seems like now it would be a matter of a simple mop up. And if four more of their friends hadn't shown up right about then it may very well have been. As I ran I kept a look out for anything useful, anything at all. I congratulated myself on taking to the roofs as a means of giving those non too bright footpads the slip. Thank goodness for the over grown ivy on the side of the building. They will never think to look up here. As I ran across the rooftops I wondered at the persistence of these particular seemingly brighter than usual louts. I would need to take a closer look at my loot once I made my escape... ...well now it's time to take a look at what I had picked up in the alley. Those heavy footed lunkheads needed to pay a little closer attention to their footing. Knowing the rooftops can come in handy. So can leading you pursuers across a stretch of old dilapidated rooftops. I wonder how many if any survived the fall through the old warehouse roof. Three stories down, that has to hurt. As I ran across the rooftops looking for a way, any way to lose the strange ghostly thing that came out of the jar I uncorked, I wondered why those morons would leave something that dangerous laying around for anyone to accidently stumble upon... Thus ends the misadventures of my Avatar...for now...

Man, this is certainly a heated debate. I think I agree with those who are opposed to tired pricing. And that is that. Just kidding. New to the online pay every month thing. But I can see why it is needed. Very expensive for staff and servers. Every company has a business plan that includes a budget. So I really can not see why the monthly fee has to be anything but a flat rate for everyone. Everyone start on an even playing field. I agree that no one likes to go up to a place and see a sign that says only people without long hair can come in. "Long haired freaky people need not apply". It sounds like a way to build racism into the game. But if it works in their other games then maybe it will work here. And under no circumstances is anyone allowed to respond to my post and berate me for saying that the developers are racists. You know darned well that that isn't what I said. I actually said that they are Nazis. But I will once again go on the record as saying that everyone should start on an even playing field. Even preorder frills are basically meaningless. You get boots of fancy smancy ever so slightly faster running that within a few levels have become obsolete. But building in content that all who pay more money can solely use is hanging out that country club sign. Think we will be able to work as caddies at least...? LOL This seems like a strange decision for a company that seems to be trying to do away with a lot of the things in MMOGs that pull people apart.

Don't most games give you the con an avatar option to check stats and gear? And I don't know if all do but some allow the character to block others ability to con them. I think it would be nice if you had the option to view others and also to block others viewing you. But in the case of asking a player to join a group the game could have different responses for different occasions. Say that you are role playing, so obviously if this were a real world most people couldn't come up to you and instantly know your life history and the worth or all your gear. Maybe a wizard would inherently know, but not most others. So if you wanted to stay mysterious as to your actual powers the game could have basic minimum and maximum guidelines as to what level avatars could quest together. But I think this game is trying to make some of that superfluous. From info I have garnered it will be adjusting most if not all instanced quests according to the abilities of your group. Personally I love this. In the ideal fantasy world you always have a character in the story line that is adventuring with others and hasn't yet reached the full potential of their powers. If they even know they have powers at all, once again only the wizard seems to know and they never tell anyone all they know. Wouldn't that be cool if the magic class could some how be given powers like that and have it fit into the gaming experience? Talk about feeling like you walked into an epic Fantasy high adventure. Then everyone could be mad at the wizards or druids because they never tell all they know and only speak in cryptic prophecies. I want, in HJ, to totally forget about all the restrictions that have been in use in others games. Some had to be for technical reasons. But a lot I belive are implemented just because of short cuts, lack of vision or not wanting to buck the establishment. The fear of the MMORPG communities unwillingness to accept change. I think the community on a whole is holding gaming advancements back. Those that will only consider a game if it is a clone of all the others that came before. I want new and exciting things. No one has to roleplay or solo or group or power level or seek all the content. But you should be able to do all those things and more in a game. I do not care for PVP. No game has found a way to make it even remotely interesting to me. If it could be included in quests somehow then I would be all for it. But back to making the world feel real. If the game itself made the decision wether two or more avatars could do battle then that would maybe solve the griefing problems. Still have the ability to turn on and off if you want to PVP but the game decides if so and so level can attack so and so. Then it is on your head if you attack someone who is stronger than you. So in a nut shell if a similar system could be put into effect, I would vote for not seeing others stats. Let the game decide who can do battle. And let the PVPers enjoy their encounters with trepidation and uncertainty. |

I voted for scenic screens. But I would like to qualify that. To me scenic encompasses just about everything in the game world itself. I like seeing the actual world architecture but with avatars included. Just like real world pictures I have never liked pictures that are just of scenery. I like that human touch to be included. It is way to impersonal just to see a beautiful building. I feel more connected to a place if there are people in the shot. So a great scenic shot could also include a great battle being waged. Or could include an avatar buying from a vendor in front of a cool looking building. Or just hanging out by a lake or in a tavern. Boy I never just answer a question do I? Oh, also I prefer shots that people have hid all the on screen interfaces. Unless of course those are what they were trying to show in the first place. |

What will be first thing you do when you get in game?
General Discussion « Hero's Journey 3/19/06 7:16:28 PM
Lol, I wonder how many people do that exact same thing? I too, after way too long spent in character creation. I shudder to think how long I will spend in this games with far more control over your look and who knows how much over your specs... I digress. Where was I? Yes I also spend as long as it takes upon first logging in to get the interface as close to what I like as possible. Never perfect. I always end up changing things as I play. Depends on the game and the scalability (word?) of the UI. So if that doesn't count then what I mainly do is take in the feel of the world. This, I am sad to say can make or break a game for me. Content is of course very very important. But I am a new generation gamer, albeit an old one, and I love great graphics and art. Bland and repeated contend can really put me off. So I spend a very long time in the training area just soaking it all in. And doing every bit of content I can find. Is that what you are all saying about me now? |

I agree. The same thing happened with Vanguard. I kept checking for info every day. Nothing. So it got to the point where I stopped even checking the web site. Then, when they reach some point in their development cycle the info started flowing. Why waste your time putting out info that will most likely change. Even the lore can and probably will change. We are all excited. But not matter how much we want it now, we will get it when they decide to give it to us. Not sure I liked how that came out. Lol I am worse than most. Mr. instant gratification. Probably because I am getting old and feeling my mortality. A time is coming when we will be saying on the forum, "Hey you strange people developing HJ stop already with the info, enough is enough!" Okay maybe not. But from what I have seen posted about the company on this forum, it seems like they know how to run a business. I think when the time is right, their decision, they will hit us hard with all kinds of stuff. They already give interviews once a week and post two new screen shots a week. I know more about this game in the past two weeks than I knew about Vanguard for months on end. Personally I think they are doing a nice job of giving out info without setting us all up for a big let down. Actually if they don't pull off the stuff they have already talked about we still will be in for a big let down. So it could actually be said that they may have released too much info too early. |

Questions to a Off-Site GM... (that's me)
General Discussion « Hero's Journey 3/14/06 10:26:05 PM
Thank you my dear for your timely illumination. I hope all future posts are as kind as yours. I have met with nothing but kindness here in this thread of threads. And I am sure that due to this threads unworldly goodness its future stickyness is ensured.
Did I get that right? Now if someone would just remove that post I made that is cluttering up this section of the forum... About the GUI. I am not sure if I am all that happy about being at the mod community's mercy. Some great mods were made for EQ II, or was that WOW, can't remember now. But the fact is they were nice but buggy. Especially after patches. So after each patch of the game you would have to run a patch for the mod. That is if the moders had already had time to adjust for the game patch. So I say great. Gotta love the moding community. But my hope is that the UI is so well thought out and implemented that only the super picky or the adventurous would feel it necessary to down load a moded UI. Not to mention some mods are unusable for the computer illiterate unsavvy like myself. I immediately look elsewhere when it goes beyond just downloading and running a program. As soon as the instructions start talking about open this file and delete this file before copying A into Z, etc., I don't want to play anymore. I am afraid of messing something up and having a program that takes up disk space but refuses to do anything else. Sorry if I sound like an ungrateful brat. I just think that customizing your game play is important. Besides if my friends come over I don't want them to be able to figure out how to play any of my avatars.

Questions to a Off-Site GM... (that's me)
General Discussion « Hero's Journey 3/14/06 6:59:12 PM
Does anyone know how to remove a topic that you started? Or thread or whatever it is called? Not wanting to go off topic I started a new topic. I just wanted to know if a user could change the order of the listings of posts when they were viewing a topic. Basically I want to set it so the most recent posts are listed first. instead of having to click on the "last" tab. Or is that something that only the originator of the post can do? Since I started clue me in a little more. What is a sticky? And what is the difference between a Post, a thread and a sticky. No laughing. I honestly do not know. And everyone assumes you already know forum speak. So if you can think of any other terms that someone new to forums might not know, feel free to explain. The topic that I started that I wish someone to remove is called "Forum controls". Catchy, huh. |

Questions to a Off-Site GM... (that's me)
General Discussion « Hero's Journey 3/14/06 12:46:36 AM
hELLO mR rOYCE. i HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT THE USER INTERFACE. Guess you can tell I hit the cap lock... Anyway. I always hate that everything on screen isn't customizable (word?). I never understood why some things could be moved and others couldn't. Is there a technical reason for that? Or is it just that not enough thought went into the design? And why hasn't any game, correct me if I am wrong, set up the hot keys so they aren't visible unless you target a mob? They hide when you aren't in combat mode. Obviously there would be a key you could map that would pull them up at any time you needed to swap things out or whatever. I like to see nothing but the world when I am playing. I know that sometimes I will need tabs on the screen to interact. But let me make them as unobtrusive as possible while they are there. And make them totally unobtrusive when they aren't needed. Oh, and I hate chat boxes. I know it's weird, but I hate them. Can you do away with them please? I know you may not be able to say anything about the game's UI. But maybe you could respond with your own thoughts on the perfect user interface?? But I pray this game does not have stuff on the screen that you can't make invisible. |

I also do not like other players being jerks and interfering with your game play. So I still am unable to understand people who say quest instances are a bad thing. I agree that there should be large areas that you can play with others. But if I am on a quest, solo or in a group, why does someone think they have the right to interfere. Unless that is the nature of the quest. But kill stealing, ninja looting, mob camping, training mobs into a group and any dumb things I may have forgotten have no place in game unless you are playing unreal or some fast paced FPS that's only goal is mass mayhem. Long sentence, I know. So I am a little leery of the ulterior motives of the "Instance Bad" group. How about a quest specifically set up with multiple soloers or groups specifically on the quest to grief each other. By way of interfering in the completion of goals? Maybe groups send some of their members to block others group with a rock slide. But my point is the griefing would be to allow you to reach the quests end goal before the other groups. griefing with a meaning not for the purpose to irritate others. Was that considered my first semi off topic post. Sorry, I do tend to ramble. Try not to be mean to me. My vote goes to HJ hands down. |

I will never forget the "Bi-Polar" comment for this combo ...ever. Care to share? Is it a private joke or something unrepeatable? Don't leave us hanging... It isn't fair to peak someone's curiosity like this. Don't make us all cry. We also want to never forget the comment. Anything that gets a cool... ...ever. ...has got to be shared. |

Nice forum. I have yet to see any childish arguments. People calling each other names and flat out saying each others ideas are dumb and pointless. What gives? Is it because it is too new and the rude people haven't found it yet? Okay so i will say it, you are all dumb and have pointless ideas. All the posts have made good points. My take on this issue agrees in a lot of places with quite a few. I have always had a problem with the game worlds view on immersion and right or wrong in a Fantasy setting. Basically anything goes in the genre. If the author can think of it there is a way to work it into the world. Magic can explain away any and all oddities. Flying mythical beasts. Are those real and immersive? Immersion in a Fantasy environment can not be judged by real world values. What is so hard to believe about a person having incredible abilities? Nothing, it is a given in a fantasy setting. you're supposed to have out of the ordinary skill sets. I like the Jet Li could find a way to kill you with half a rubberband comment In a magical world any number of reasons could explain why the highly trained martial fighter forgoes heavy cumbersome armor. Not wanting the hindrance of the bulky stuff or our hero's gods have forbidden him to wear the stuff because it causes rashes. Isn't this a MMORPG? What does RPG stand for? I personally love the idea of wearing whatever I want. Fate doesn't decide which chest or monster drops a great piece of armor. I can concentrate on having fun and looking around in the game. Doing interesting quests. Grouping with fun people and trying to figure out the coolest way to finish a quest that no one else has come up with yet. Better bragging rights than "look at my ominous black helmet of Frog Slaying". I would rather Let these kinds of things decide how powerful I am. Not my luck in finding a magic imbued piece of gear that I need to survive. That makes the item more powerful than I am and I won't stand for that. Or more like I never had a choice since this has been standard fare up to this point. The point made that just because I carry a smaller weapon than you doesn't mean that I can't kill you with it before you kill me is a great point. Wow think of all the Fantasy novels you have read. Name one where at some point the hero or one of the many heroes of the story doesn't win in some situation where it appeared they had no chance. You people are insane lol. I am pretty excited. I look forward to proving my worth as a brooding dark hero that kills with a mid sized fish. Fish can be very dangerous in my world. Man, the possibilities are endless. Oh, and I will work at not rambling as much in my future posts. Please bear with me. I am new to this. This is the first game that has got me excited enough to actually make posts. For that reason alone you should all buy this game. |

I for one know that most people, including myself, will never be given enough information to please them. I gorge myself on all the info I can find about games in development that catch my attention, PC or platform. Most of the time they don't live up to the hype. But I am hopeful about HJ. This is the impression I get based on all the info I have gleaned so far. Which all in all is comprised of more developer interviews than I recall seeing for any of the other games I have followed. My take on their information releasing practices so far is that they are saying tons with what they are saying and not saying. First of all, your character. And remember this is how I perceive the direction they are hinting at. My take is that your character won't have skills like we are used to seeing. Maybe not even race traits that are etched in stone. I say this because of the way they can be customized,i.e., armor on a mage with no detrimental effects. I picked up that you won't gimp a avatar by picking a historically weak race and plunking them into a class that seems better suited to a more resilient race. This feel more like a real fantasy setting. You can have the skinny little halfling who is feared by warriors three times his size and brawn, because he is that fraction of a percentage of the population that is hero material; or because he is favored by the gods or just plain cursed by a magical weapon that drinks souls. A lot of my examples support other aspects of game play. Like in questing. They have been pretty forthcoming about their quest system being different. Basically if they can pull it off I don't see how any other MMORPG could compete on merit. You will always have the people that dismiss change out-of-hand. They are happy where they are and will let nothing in to change that world. I prefer not to stagnate. HJ is attempting to let me interact with a "real" world full of other people. Same as everyone else. But they are trying harder to make me feel like I am one of the driving factors in this world. Not that I am more important than the other players. But as important but in my own way. I am not sure I said that very clear. In the real world The "circles" Donald Trump runs in is all important to him and his peers and lackeys and everything he is in contact with. But his world doesn't matter to Bill Gates,or Stephen Spielberg{sp?} or Ophra Winfri{sp?} who are just as important in their inner circle and immediate surroundings. They may have heard about each other. May have even run into each other. What they each have done in the world may have affected all the others in some way. But when all is said and done their worlds are separate and each is a hero in that world. That is how reality is perceived. There is a general knowledge and sense of the world around you to encompass the whole of the planet. But when it comes right down to it, you are only fighting dragons most of the time in your own back yard. Sorry, long winded. I will continue in another message this is getting a little cumbersome. I will try to make my points more concisely.

Questions to a Off-Site GM... (that's me)
General Discussion « Hero's Journey 3/12/06 9:17:06 AM
Aye, you could read a paragraph as someone describes character customization...
...or you can just watch a video. http://files.filefront.com/heroes_journey_e3_2005_presentationzip/;4336667;;/fileinfo.html Did you see all those freaking options? She barely even scratched the surface.... ::drools::
This post was on page 14 of this "thread"?. Sorry I do not speak "Forum". Oh, as I was saying. This is where I actually managed to download the movie file. I had stumbled onto a few other links, one of which is buried somewhere in the last 30 something odd pages of this discussion. But something was wrong with all the other download links. Error messages of some kind would pop up when I tried to get the file. I almost lost hope. These guys have multiple servers to use. Beware though. I think this is the only available footage at this point. It isn't very good quality. But as you and all the rest of us know...starving fish will leap from a fast flowing river, slash you across the eyes with their dorsal fins to blind you, then slowly eat your fingernails off one by one. Or something along those lines. Sorry, I just mean that you get desperate when what you need is in short supply, like video footage of this game, or food for the poor fishies. I am excited about the character creation. Well actually about the whole game. I am absolutely champing at the bits for more footage. I never understand why companies don't put out a whole slew of in game movie footage and screen shots. I love reading interviews with the powers that be, but nothing tells the story better than a picture. Or better yet one of those newfangled moving picture contraptions. Just throw a hugh disclaimer paragraph or two in front of what you are releasing and have at it. Oh and make sure you don't show any in game secrets that all your competitors could steal. But please, oh wise and mighty all powerful makers of the oh so holy MMORPG, feed the ever increasingly unworthy fishies... |
