Yep this is blizzards last chance to make any money since everything they have released since Warcraft 3 has failed so hard.......

Seriously, is this site filled with people that like to argue for the sake of arguing? Read the underlined in what you quoted. One of the best indie games released in the last 10 years is Mount and Blade, so dont think I dont know about small studios or discount them. There was nothing said to hint at it being done.

Are you really a member here and asking this question? MMORPG.com forums are PvP forums.

Actually no I didnt know, im new...guess I better go gear up.

I recommend a good flame suit!

I suspect that RG might be speaking the truth but without the media savvy to realise that his words will be taken in some parts out of context and in other ways for the arrogance that they show.  I mean  this man does have some delusions of grandeur, he changed his name recently to add "De Cayeux" to the end of his name.  Bless him he really does want to live in a medieval world though he also paid to go into space which I am sure many would do if they could afford it.

There is truth in the core of his words many of the early designers had been playing PnP rpg's for many years had lived with visions and story creation so that by the time they were making games for computers they were already steeped in a system of creation, I suspect that many of the newer generation grow up playing computer games and perhaps dreaming of what they would like to do but that is very different from actually creating something, it is playing someone elses ideas.  To the extent many of the new young designers  do not go through the apprenticeship of World and story design that the old designers went through.

Perhaps there needs to be a resurgence of PnP rpg's.

I have worked in the games indsutry and currently work in a University that offers games courses. If you think that all they get taught is how to mimic other peoples ideas you are mistaken. They study everything AAA games, board games, pen and paper, pinball, foosball, mobile games. There are two 48 hour game jams every year, students are encouraged to work over the summer on their own games and given the resources to do it. They study peoples responses to games, they work with every type of control scheme you can imagine including full 3d and VR.

It's not like they come in and are thown a role, you are a programmer, you are an artist. If the person has the drive to become a designer they have to be aware and competent in every role and the tools are there. There are many people that are excelling just because they aren't churning out AAA games every year doesn't mean they don't exist.

The people I saw developing the game I worked on were some of the most talented people I have ever worked beside with drive and passion to be the best in their field.

He didnt say its DEVIOD of talent, nor did I. He listed SOME people he believes are great designers and he is correct, there are a LOT of really bad game makers out there and the industry agrees with him by how many games dont do well, get average or lower ratings and just plain do nothing for the industry other than add yet another game to the market.

Now throw in how many quality companies are being bought out by major corporations and are being trashed...and taadaa!

If you only look at AAA games then this is probably true, some of the best games of the last few years have been from small studios or individual guys with the vision and drive to do something awesome.

It's also funny to read people saying that Blizzard are devoid of talent because look at Starcraft it's just more of the same. Garriots next game is just him going back to his happy place and making a sort of MMO that looks like its 2001.

The guys he mentions like molyneux are legends but they have not produced anything remotely good for a generation of gaming now. That XBLA Fable game really pushed the boundaries of gaming eh?

I think the guys he lists as great developers shows how out of touch he really is, these guys havent released a good game in over 10 years.

 Define "good".

Company makes a game with zero that is new.

Company makes a game with many new innovative ideas.

Both can be good or bad but do you lend weight to the new ideas over the old?

A great game with no new ideas does nothing to push gameplay forward...a bad or bland game with a ton of new ideas will be built on in the future pushing gaming to new places.

Everyone he listed as great developers did just that, pushed gaming forward to where it is today.

Now then...please list all the "good" MMOs made over the last 10 years and I will then provide you with a list 10x as long with the bad ones. That is what he is touching on.

Game Designers don't just make MMO's he is talking about the industry as a whole, and if you believe it's that devoid of talent you must have been living under a rock.

To be a competent programmer, artist, designer when he started making games was a lot easier than it is now.

Some indie game devs are all of these things and I think he is overlooking some great talent. AAA devs specialize because the games are so complex, you want a GREAT artist you dont want an artist that is OK and can do a bit of programming and has some alright design ideas too.

I think the guys he lists as great developers shows how out of touch he really is, these guys havent released a good game in over 10 years.

To the OP:

For the scripts to be put to a stop, DayZ mod would no longer function - READ: DEAD IN THE WATER, NO WORKY WORKY.  The scripting it does is how it runs in the first place.  Your client machine injects scripts in to the server machine to, for example, tell it to spawn zeds in Balota..This is how ArmA II works.

Do you research what you cry about before crying about it?  All of the script cheating will be fixed in the SA as the server will not function that way, it will be running a true MMO architecture for everything where the server tells the client what is what and you can't nuke this town, not allowed, UNLIKE the FREE mod where the clients machine says "Hey server, nuke Zelenegorsk for me.", Server, "Okay, you got it chief!!"., wallhacks and aimbots may pop up in the SA but those are easier to defeat than something that works on how the architecture of the game is designed, READ:  SCRIPTS being injected from the CLIENT's machine to tell the server what to do.

The SA was, originally (the one that was supposed to be released before 2013), going to be the mod just more modded to run without ArmA II OA, but the scripting would have still be there, hence the delay and the total rework of the game, it is not running on ArmA engine anymore, but a totally new engine the DayZ team/BI built specifically for the Stand Alone.

Dayz FREE Mod can't be changed to stop the scripting, hence why gotcha anti cheat and the like were created by outside parties.

Rocket is no longer working on the mod, hasn't been since around Octoberish, it was passed on to the community, mainly led by RaZor I believe his forum name is.

This pretty much says everything I wanted to say. To "fix" the hacking in the mod would mean shutting the mod down.

The DayZ stand alone game that you will have to pay money for and will not be free won't be built in the same way at all so scripting just won't work at all. Speedhack and Wallhack will probably exist(because they do in almost every game) but should be a lot easier to control and monitor.

I have read a few so far, most of them list things they like and things they dislike, none of them say its the second coming of jesus and none of them say its terrible because it's a 3 hour developer given preview so to pass judgement on the game based on that short a play time is ridiculous.

Anything is better than Diablo 3, lol. Diablo 3 = watered down Diablo 2 with better graphics and slower paced gameplay. It does have a RMAH though (which I really like) but the whole game and item system is centered around it, and it shows. Diablo 2 had a very interesting item system, whereas Diablo 3 is all about stacking stats, like WoW.

Thank god for GGG and Path of Exile. Life savers for the isometric ARPG crowd.

I think a Diablo MMO produced by Blizzard North would've blown the current game out of the water. Blizzard are going downhill, their hearts just aren't in the right place anymore. The last good game they produced was vanilla WoW imo, and look at the state of WoW now.

I don't think blizzard are the evil horror show most people like to make out, i'd like to have seen how any other company handled the insane success of WoW.

In general terms the current state of WoW is fine. Starcraft 2 was great, I will be buying HoTS next month.

The only franchise that is heading to bin without some severe work is Diablo, I enjoyed playing through Diablo3 once and got about 80 hours from it but I won't ever play it again.

I would say it is not worth the money, if you have the $10 spare and MUST have a faster connection for some reason then go ahead.

I wish I could get that sort of speed, here in the UK  I get 19 DOWN and 0.9 UP!

I think some games should drop the NDA earlier than they do but an NDA is 100% necessary. You need to make sure your ideas are safe and no one is stealing them, your game could be a total train wreck at certain stages of testing and if you release that information to the public they will dismiss the game even if it is fixed at release.

I worked on GTA San Andreas and my NDA only expired last year, so for 6 years I could not tell anyone that I worked on an expansion pack for that game that in the end was never released. If someone had leaked that was being made at the time then people would have went bananas hounding rockstar to find out when it would be released and when it never saw the light of day those people would feel cheated.

The general public don't understand game development, exposing buggys alpha and beta games is not good business. Enthusiasts understand the stages a bit better and how games can change drastically but if Joe Public tried to play a buggy Alpha and failed miserably he would never touch that game again.

Ugh, this again?  Why not just start a thread about how you hate Live Gold and skip masking the troll under something else?  If you have an xbox, and want to play online, you have to have a gold sub.  Even for the, otherwise, totally free Happy Wars.  In what fantasy land would this game suddenly fall under a different set of circumstances?

With that said, lets address how silly this REALLY is.  50$ a year.  $4.16 a month.  A cost which has, without question, gone to create the most successful of all the online and indie marketplaces for the consoles currently out.  A person COULD say that the PC is so much better because it is free, but its also a fat stack more expensive for the hardware.  Assume you get a full force 250 gig 360, thats about $300.  That much money won't even buy you the skeleton of a gaming PC.  You're going to approach, if not completely surpass, $1000 just to get a solid gaming rig and then you're going to have to maintain it.

Using the figures, loose as they are, that I just gave you it would take 14 years of a gold sub before what you paid for your xbox even catches up to what you spent on your PC.  14 YEARS for gods sake.  All the while you can be reasonably sure every game you ever buy will work on it.  PC gaming comes with massive headaches.  You can have a beast rig only to discover that your particular video card, for all of its awesome, has a conflict with the game you wanna play and ruins the experience.  Because the hardware used in consoles is set in stone, developers working with them can optimize MUCH better for more reliable and stable game experience.

People who trash on MS for its live cost are either terrible at math or live in a dreamworld where PC gaming isn't a money sink of massive proportions.  Or the equally magical dreamworld where the other online services offered by current gen systems (I name current specifically because next gen is a great chance for new movement forward to happen and really redefine things for us) can even compare.  They can't.  I've used all current gen consoles.  None of them compare to XBL.  Especially not the Wii, ick....

I disagree about the cost. A well built gaming pc will last you for 5 years and practically the only thing you would need to upgrade, if you chose to do so, is your graphics card. I guess that would cost about the same as 5 years of xbox live. And there's really no need to go over 800 dollar range for your PC unless you want top end, which is unecessary for most people. Now let's look at it this way. You buy an xbox for $300. Ok that's fine, but you still need a computer don't you? For school, work, etc. Unless you're buying a bottom of the barrell PC for $200 - $300, you'll more likely need to spend $400 - $500. So instead of getting an xbox and a low end PC, why not just build a higher end PC for the price of both? So I don't think that it's fare to say PC gaming is much more expensive. Now most people probably already have some kind of PC so a console really is the cheaper alternative. But, I also think most people would buy a console for the particular games and features available to it such as xbox live rather than just because its cheaper. I don't think it be would too difficult for someone to save money for a few months to buy a PC rather than a console.

Regarding the OP, it is kind of silly that you would expect Defiance to be completely free to play on xbox live. That's just how it has always been on xbox. No matter what game you want to play, you have to pay the xbox live fee to play it online.

Can you tell me the specs of this $800 PC that will easily last 5 years?

The biggest negative about a PC is it getting bogged down with other stuff because you will use it for other stuff not just gaming.

If you are doing no gaming at all on your PC you can very easily get something that is not horrible for around 300-400.

Building a good quality PC is more expensive, there is more you need to do to keep it in good condition too, lots of people do not want to invest that much in an entertainment device, they want to get home and turn it on and play. Consoles are for those people. A gaming PC is for enthusiasts.

The average joe doesn't even know what makes a PC good or not, these are the people buying computers at PC world and Walmart.

Since Disney bought all of Star Wars this game has been in Limbo, there is no news as of yet. There was a Kotaku report recently that the game may be on hold but there is no concrete info.

http://www.kotaku.com.au/2013/03/the-strange-status-of-star-wars-1313-a-hot-game-with-an-uncertain-future/

They are giving all players that have quit a free 7 days, so last night I logged in for the first time in 6 months.

I thought " I can't do this anymore " and just logged out, had a great time years ago but nah it's just not got it anymore, maybe for new folk but for old players, nah.

I have to disagree with those who spout hatred towards the game merely for the DRM complaint. That's just bogus, especially coming from MMO players. Everything we play has "DRM", but you won't moan about buying the next big MMO.  If and when it shuts down, then cry foul.  Because that's a real possibility with EA.

But this new Sim City's great fault isn't the always online gameplay, the "DRM", or even the server issues. It's the fact that Maxis and EA didn't do the right thing and brand the game as Sim City Online, because they were afraid to.  If they had, the server woes would still be regrettable, but par for the course for a new MMO launch.

But don't cry DRM foul just because Sim City hasn't been online only in the past.  It was a cop out of rage for Diablo 3, and it's a cop out here.  It's an online game, period. That's what it's packaged as, and sold as.  It was just not clear enough in marketing or advertising.  And now you can either buy into it like you do so many MMOs, or not.  It's pretty simple.

Now, all that said? I do dislike how small land lots are.  That's the big drawback for me.  And it needs to be remedied with a free patch soon. Otherwise, I'm enjoying the game a lot and agree with Christina's assessment.

Well I have to disagree with you Bill, I live out in the country and my internet is not always something I can count on.  I use single player games if I don't have internet.   I like to think my objections to the game as criticisms, not hate.  Hate seems to be used a lot when people disagree with a game when I highly doubt they actually hate it, just have issues with it.

There are a lot of games out there without what I consider very obstrusive DRM.  I vote with my pocket book and do not buy games with always on DRM.  I know a lot of my friends do the same.   Whether it is an issue for you, it is an issue for others.

Sure I play different MMO's when I have internet, but if a game is not a MMO, I should not have to have internet to play it.

Then Sim City 5 is not for you, it says in the requirements that it requires and always on connection, you live in the country and do not meet these requirements so should not buy the game. Sim City 5 was built as a multiplayer game, it is not the Sim City single player experience you remember.

PC games are also cheaper and most have a longer life of playing IMO. We buy less of them a year than the consoles. A TON of people who play mostly consoles have at least two systems. On each system, they own 10 to 20 games at around $60 a pop. Even if they get them cheaper, so do PC users...a LOT cheaper.

PCs last a minimum (realistically) of 5 years (for me at least...I aint rich) before any considerable upgrade. IPCs also perform better and can be built to do so at around $500 not including the monitor. Oh yeah...how much does the TV you run your cosoles on cost? I bet more than my rig. Even if only half that, still more than my monitor.

Oh..and I can play mine while watching TV. You can too if you have a second set. But that's not part of this calculation you made up. All said and done, your console, if you go by the standard that you have to be up to today's standards, you actually paid $300 (per machine), plus in the $50 range per game, add in at least $500 for a medium sized flat screen, another $300-$500 for the second TV so you or anyone else can actually watch TV while you are on your console, and I'd say you paid more than the rest of us PC gamers.

:P

It's really a kinda of silly argument though right? I don't think either choice is much cheaper. Depends on the person. Most own both too...

I have my consoles and my PC connected to my TV. I have no issues sharing my TV with my wife and letting her watch TV when something is on. The assumption that people NEED a second TV in any scenario is a bit weird.

"i can play mine while watching TV" seems a bit of a crap argument, if I am gaming I don't want to be watching TV, if I am watching TV I don't want to be gaming. If someone is playing on a console they could also be watching TV or doing a myriad of other things on any other device they own.

I just paid £700 to build my PC and there is no way it will still be running as good as it is now in 5 years time without some serious upgrades. i5 3570k, 8GB ram, AMD 7950 3GB, 120GB SSD, 500GB HDD.

Building a good PC is more expensive than buying a console + TV but most people have a TV already so to factor a TV in to the cost of a console is a bit odd. For that extra money you can do a lot more with that device though and it will play any game better than the consoles in most situations.

The advantage the console has is that other than buying the games you don't need to engage your brain at all, it just works, no installing drivers, changing hardware, it just sits there and plays games until it either dies or you put it in the bin.

well thats the highest review i have seen so far LOL..

Polygon gave it a 9.5 :)

They lowered it to a 4 because of EA's disastrous handling of the launch, though.

So they did!

But I can't say I agree with why.  Again, it's likely my MMO sensibilities here, but these are issues with the service side of SimCity, and ones that have largely been erradicated in a week's time.  The GAME itself is a lot of fun, but not without fault.  If people had given WoW a score based on their early server woes, imagine the rating it would have received. I think lowering review scores based on server woes is a wrong step.  Unless the server woes were to continue like this and permanently effect the game.  Mark them down, sure.  As the re-review states, it dropped their score initially from a 9.5 to an 8, but then they dropped it to a 4 when issues continued and worsened... but they weren't going to raise it again when the issues were resolved?

I think that's a bad show, but that's just me.

It sets a precedent, will they do this for every game? How many times are they going to re-review other games? Have they been this harsh on other games that launched with totally broken multiplayer? Once the servers are turned off do you go back and review it and give it a 0 since no one can connect?

They should review it as it is when the review is completed, then maybe a month later do another review and see if anything has changed.

It would be like me reviewing the game on Friday when it came out, i'd have given it a 2/10 over the weekend I'd have given it a 9/10, this morning my save has corrupted so I am back to feel like it's a 2/10.

I think it peaked at 13 million.  I like WoW.  I played MOP a little bit, had my fun, and recently stopped playing again.

I say give it a shot if you are interested, WoW still has the largest mmorpg community and its still a quality game.

I just don't know what the story in the game is about anymore. Does anyone?

And too many old instances that just have been abandoned by the game devs and I loved doing them.

You're right, but the story doesn't even matter anymore. All that matters is chewing through levels. It's not something that is a WoW problem though, it's an industry problem. I think that WoW propagated the problem, but people look to power level every single game these days.

It's funny, because I remember when Wrath was released, there were so many people who bitched and complained about how Bliz was just giving away level 60 characters (the Death Knight). Now they bitch and complain about how the rep grind is too long.

I love WoW and I liked MoP, but I recently quit also (pre-Thunder King), so the content was obviously NOT engaging enough to keep me interested long enough to stick around for the eng game stuff.

I think that WoW makes me feel like a robot sometimes, or like it's a job. I don't like games like that anymore. I prefer engaging stories that I can play through an hour at a time and feel like I'm still progressing, regardless how fast or slow that may be. That'll get my monies.

You are correct, everyone just wants wants wants now. I think the game is good solid fun from when you start playing to a couple of expansions in. That is the point you realise that every expansion is the same thing over and over and it feels like a job at that point.

Blizzard have catered to the players, I think they get a lot of unfair criticism for making the game easier when players have been doing it themselves for years, when WoW started it was standard questing with minimal waypoints so someone made QuestHelper to pin point every objective, millions used it, so blizzard made there own version.

Addons for raids are all over the place, it got to a point where for me if you are not heroic raiding you don't even need to know tactics, you just load up your boss mod and it honks at you when you have to do something or you do something wrong.

I'd encourage any new player give the game a go, if you can get beyond the barren starter zones and in to the actual game and meet some people it will be fantastic still. Old players fancy going back? Just leave it be and remember the fun times you had.
