2 years, 2 months and 16 days since I've spent $ on a new MMO
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 4/02/13 1:29:57 PM
Wish it was that long for me OP, so far I haven't bought anything since GW2, I probably got enough play time out of that for it not to be a total waste of money but I haven't bought anything in the MMORPG genre since then and so far there doesn't seem to be anything worth buying at all.

Originally posted by GrayGhost79 You make a great point here, I worked as a QA Tester on GTA:San Andreas and although this is slightly different from just playing games it serves the same purpose. GTA4 is the same game as GTA SA as far as I am concerced, my brain approaches the missions in the same way, I know how the guys constructed the world, I know the level designers and how they created the mission, there is no mystery in a GTA game for me any more. I spent a year of my life playing GTA for a living. I still enjoy playing a GTA game every now and then but they are not challenging in the slightest now. People don't believe me when I say that GTA is just a copy and paste with a different skin each time and maybe to the normal gamer it doesn't seem like that but I spent a year of my life playing it for about 10 hours a day 7 days a week. I realise that's not the same as a normal gamer but after years of the same type of games it get's to a similar level, you know how to bypass awkward mechanics, you know the tricks, you know how you want to play, there is no mystery any more. |

APB: Reloaded on Kickstarter, Wrath of Heroes Style
General Discussion « All Points Bulletin (APB) 3/27/13 9:34:08 AM
I think it's weird they are even using the APB name, for most gamers it conjures memories of the fastest? ever failure of an MMO and a game that sent one company completely to oblivion. Does it have a big following now? I must admit I haven't looked at it at all since it went under the first time and I am sure a lot of other people are the same. Seems odd to market something with such a tainted reputation. |

When developers start making HARD difficulties actually hard I will go back to playing them on the hardest settings. Most games these days HARD = they have more health, you have less, you have less ammo/mana/whatever. I remember playing SOCOM4 on the hardest setting and the only difference from normal was you would die in 2 hits and enemies would die in 20 hits, so boring it's unreal.
Dark Souls is considered by many to be a hard game but people I know that usually only play shooters online and other blockbuster games have slogged through it to completion because it only offers one difficulty, the game is as difficult as the game is, there is no making it harder or easier other than the way you decide to approach it. I'd be happy if more games had one difficulty and that was it, take it or leave it. People will end up playing the game for longer rather than powering through it in 8 hours and never touching it again. Also I don't want to have to complete the game 3 times to unlock whatever hard more you have hidden away, gating difficult content and creating a meaningless grind it stupid. |

I have the forums open quite a lot at work but these side ads for Scarlet Blade are pushing it a bit. I can't really use my work computer at any part of my day ( even dsignated breaks ) to view this site any more with ads as blatant as this. |

MMO concept: Players as the Enemy in PvE.
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 3/22/13 11:48:24 AM
This mechanic existed in Demon's Souls on the PS3. The boss at the end of World 3-1 I think? When a player was getting close to the boss another player would be summoned, that player would take control of the boss with all his normal abilities and try to kill the player, the player attacking the boss fights as normal but the fight is now much harder/easier because another player is in control. It really was fantastic, if you defeated the player as the boss you got some special items, it was really good fun and meant that although that boss always had the same abilities it was never the same each time you fought him. |

General: Blizzard Announces HearthStone CCG Game
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 3/22/13 9:44:08 AM
I've played the MTG games on PS3 and liked them well enough but didn't care much for the characters or lore so I will probably play this at some point, it's not like it's going to be anyones main game is it?

Originally posted by Doogiehowser Doogie is correct, comparing a free game to a paid for game is ridiculous. If you want to compare a free game to a paid game then count the free games accounts and count the paid games accounts is about as close as you will get to being accurate. WoW has 9 million ish players but how many players do you think it has had? LoL stats include me as a player because I created an account and played one game, WoW stats don't include me because I haven't played the game for 6 months now. The split between east and west is more like 60/40 than 7mil vs 2mil. |

Originally posted by Briansho Customer retention on blizzard games is probably something other developers touch themselves at the thought of mimicing. People still play Diablo 1 and 2, Starcraft and Brood War are still played by many, people still play Warcraft 3 and the original Dota mod for it, WoW has 9 million active players(over 3 million western subs at £8.99 a month), Starcraft 2 WoL and HoTS are hugely popular all over the world and have people playing them for a real life jobs. The only lemon in the bunch is Diablo 3, the retention on that must have been horrendous. |

Originally posted by nbtscan I can understand they wouldn't want to cause a mass exodus from WoW but at the same time they can't leave it so long that people lose interest altogether. I think there is a large audience of people who have played WoW and have moved on but would still go back and play whatever the next MMO blizzard release is. If they hang about too long those players move on completely from games or get invested in something else. They will have to strike a balance between both but I am sure they will be milking WoW for years to come alongside whatever game they release next. |

Yep this is blizzards last chance to make any money since everything they have released since Warcraft 3 has failed so hard.......

Originally posted by Hekate27 I have worked in the games indsutry and currently work in a University that offers games courses. If you think that all they get taught is how to mimic other peoples ideas you are mistaken. They study everything AAA games, board games, pen and paper, pinball, foosball, mobile games. There are two 48 hour game jams every year, students are encouraged to work over the summer on their own games and given the resources to do it. They study peoples responses to games, they work with every type of control scheme you can imagine including full 3d and VR. It's not like they come in and are thown a role, you are a programmer, you are an artist. If the person has the drive to become a designer they have to be aware and competent in every role and the tools are there. There are many people that are excelling just because they aren't churning out AAA games every year doesn't mean they don't exist. The people I saw developing the game I worked on were some of the most talented people I have ever worked beside with drive and passion to be the best in their field. |
