I LOVE this response! It says it all man... "If I want a challenge I'll go to work" Very well said. Perhaps the people who like to sneak around, mine nodes under people's noses and steal there loot, and think this is challenging should quit their care bear job (or GET a job first, then quit it) and get a real job, something challenging, engaging and more fulfilling than burger-flipping or table bussing. Gee, I hope I didn't offend anyone with my care bear comment.    ;)

It's just plain boring and a short cut to cater to care bear whiners who are too weak/passive to grab what they want in a true, open MMO world. Everyone has the exact same chance to get the boss kill, or whatever. You lost it to the other group? Well Boo-Hoo? I guess you just didn't cut it. Maybe it's time to stop whining and actually PRACTICE, instead of expecting to get everything served on an instanced silver plate. I'm totally against the idea that being unskilled and generally sucky should be rewarded in games. I'm not saying I wont play a game that has instances, but it IS a huge turn off. Bleh.

So either master the game or go play something else... not much of a "community" attitude there. Of course, the other option is basically get abused, lose out on good content, items and fun then eventually quit the game. Maybe that's not a 3rd option so much as an extended 2nd option?

Does it matter if something has the title “official” as long as a lot of people might take interest in it? Just because someone is in charge doesn’t’ mean he can give good interviews, and just because someone isn’t in charge, doesn’t mean his writings are useless.

You say “some random reader’s personal opinion” and at the same time “I’m not saying anything about the content of this paper”, you contradict yourself. This paper isn’t based on my personal opinion, but on experience of what has worked efficiently through years of gaming. Also academic projects have a lot harder rules, so it’s actually more likely that you get personal or a company’s opinion from someone “official”.

Though if you still feel that I’m talking out in the blue, please correct my mistakes and tell me where I’m doing wrong. I still find it better to write and try to help people than decide that learning through experience is best and keep everything to yourself. Many people have different reasons for needing a hand and those that doesn’t’ can just skip reading.

Funny you mention Sony since the only game I played actively was WoW when writing this. I do believe Blizzard is one of their hardest competitors. ; )

The reason I was focusing on WoW is because they have the highest player base and should also have highest amount of new players, which is my main target group with this article.

Being "official" or not : My point was in regards to where this ducument was posted. The location in which it was posted has been, till now, a place to find information other than gamer opinions/research... whatever you want to call it. Your paper belongs in the blog or forum sections as I see it. Excuse me for voicing this opinion?

On "personal opinions" : Again, since I have yet to even READ this document (a point people keep missing here) I obviously cannot comment on the content of your paper. Again, as I've stated a few times already, I'm commenting on WHERE IT WAS PLACED, not the subject, content, style, language.... of the paper itself. How is this a contradiction?

As to contradictions : You say this paper (again, I have NOT read it yet!) "isn't based on my personal opinion", only to then state "but on experience of what has worked...". To put it bluntly, your experiences make what you write about them opinion. Your feelings on a class as you test them out and try to see what works and what does not work, these are all biases and therefore opinion. What IS the case for you as you play a Cleric may not fit the play style or interests of someone else playing a Cleric. But I digress...

To be honest, since I have NOT read this paper yet (echo... echo... echo...) I have no idea how you feel about any class or whatever. I'm not interested in how you think I (or anyone else for that matter) "should" play an MMO. I'm more of the mind that people should get a game, install it, create a toon, log in and explore/have fun. Learn as you go. My point here is what again??

Oh right, the placement of this paper.  Wow.

How the hell does this "handbook" rate such a prominent position? Is he sleeping with one of the administrators here? An in-law or something?

I guess it coincides with MMORPG.com posting info on non-MMO games though. Anyone know of a good source of info for actual MMO's as I think this one's been bought out by Sony.  :P

-Naaz.

Sure, I'll explain.

First: It's a well-written general guide for players who might be new to the genre. That was agreed upon by the entire staff here, and I stand by it.

Second: You're not going to like everything that we put up here. Honestly, we cater to a lot fo different people and some things are going to appeal to you and some things aren't.

Third: Yes, I can see where us posting this article would lead you to believe that we've been "bought out by Sony". You do realize that this is an independently written piece and has nothing at all to do with ANY game company, let alone Sony.

Hope that clears things up for you.

My opinion has nothing to do with the content at all, just the fact that it was posted up in the revolving window of useful information pertaining to games and gaming companies. Now, you could translate that statement loosely enough so that it would include something some guy wrote about games or gaming. But so far, we've come to expect information that is more "official" pertaining to games and gaming. Devices reviewed by staff or reputable hardware sites. Developer information, chats and interviews regarding current and future games.

The information we expect to see (or is it just "I" expect to see...) has always been stories and articles written in stone, official, and out of the mouths of the people in charge. Is this just the first of many "papers someone wrote that sounded good" we're going to find there? Will the balance of quality gaming information start tiping in favor of player opinions instead of direct information from gaming companies (for example)?

Again, I'm not saying ANYTHING about the content of his paper. That'll have to be another rant for another day (teehee). And no, of course I didn't actually think MMORPG.com was purchased by Sony... it was sarcasm based on all the hatred people have for that company and the tragedies that become of those purchases. Anyway...

You're are correct in assuming not everyone will like everything you post here, but please take a look past all that. I don't care if this guy wrote a paper on how he thinks a gaming company makes games or what some gaming companies could do to improve... My opinion here is merely that some random reader's personal opinion should not have been deemed worthy of a "page1 print". It should have been left in the blog section where it originated (at least that's where I saw it the day before it was moved up to the big flashy banner) along with everyone else's opinions on how to best play an MMO.

Was that clear enough? Do I make more sense now? Am I still a hater?   :(

Those images are a perfect cross between WoW and LotRO graphics. I only mention this because it's so strikingly similar. The cartoony trees, logs, spiders... the realistic structures, people, armor... Kinda weird for someone who plays both games.

Personally, I have an 8800GTX at home but I dug this info up for you. I doubt you'll be disappointed by this card.

"Right now though, the GeForce 8800 GT offers you the best value on the planet when it comes to 3D gaming cards. You won’t be disappointed in its performance, and you won’t be disappointed in the cost."

One (of very few things) I liked about Vanguard was a particular newbie quest where you were asked to go out and kill some of these oversized bees buzzing around nearby because they were annoying someone. (I don't remember the specific dialog). You weren't given a number, just a task to help someone out. The quest itself was of course very simple and took no thought at all, but the fact that someone finally took out that agonizing number was somehow a sign of relief! I'll just kill these bees till this guy can concentrate. Perhaps I'll even focus on the ones closest to him in the hopes I won't have to kill as many or that his concentration will improve more quickly. Know what I mean?

Anyway, to take this a step further, if there were some dynamics written in where over time the bee population diminished, perhaps that quest would be removed or altered until their population grew back again to the point of annoyance?

Just a thought...

What's really funny, is there is still SOOOOOOOOO much talk about Warhammer being a "WoW Clone" but if you take away the Warhammer Tabletop inspired graphics, Warhammer is proving again and again to be fundamentally different then WoW.

Age of Conan, on the other hand, is proving more and more with every new release of information that they are the true "WoW clone."

I find it hillarious...

Still, back to the original topic, the Disciple of Khaine:

This may be the first "healer" class I'm interesting in playing.

Do damage at melee range and then use your blood-thirst-induced essence to heal yourself and allies? Sounds like a blast to me!

It's like a Warrior from WoW with the rage mechanic, but you heal/debuff with your built-up essence.

Sounds hot.

To tell the truth, it sounds more like a Druid from WoW. In bear form they would save up Rage and convert it to health with Frenzied Regeneration. Or even more simply, as a Druid I would go in with cat form or bear form, beat the thing silly, swap into caster form for heals and whatnot, then switch back to animal form for more damage.

Sure, not "exactly" like the Diciple, but hardly anything new. Now that I think of it, in Vanguard the Diciple's did this too. Had to beat things up before being able to cast heals (if I remember correctly...).

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not here to bash Warhammer. I'm looking forward to this game too and have been trying to keep my hopes up somewhat about it. Just also trying to keep some perspective about this kinda stuff.

Paladin : "The official title has come out of fashion, but the word "paladin" is still used to describe a heroic champion, or the defender of a noble cause."   So, where in there do you get evil? Misguided maybe, a liitle extreme is some historical cases perhaps, but to be honest, an evil paladin is no longer a paladin but more of a death knight for example. In my opionion Pally's are inherently good. Being an evil paladin would be like a greedy buddhist! (LOL)

Warlock : "In the Warcraft series, warlocks are sorcerers who chose to enter into a path of darkness, drawing their powers from demonic sources in exchange for their souls."  Are you kidding me? Offering up your soul for power? This could possibly be considered good? Again, in my opinion, 'locks cannot be good. The lose the possibility of ever being considered good the day they choose to BE a 'lock. Any race considering themselves good would have to exile one of their own that turned to the dark sid... I mean became a warlock.

So on that note, with the addition of Blood Elf Paladins, the Horde, by definition, can no longer be treated as evil. And as always, neither side can be treated as good (not just because of the Warlock class but because they have both done horrible things to eachother!) This is a typical battle between 2 sides who are unwilling to communicate, understand, listen... you know, the typical things that cause marriages to fail!

...Enough bullshit and create an MMORPG that has a good leveling speed...

Only responding to part of this ridiculous post because flaming isn't typically what I like to do, but....

All games have a level cap. If you can reach the cap in a short period of time (say a month or less like in WoW) you'll lose the desire to continue playing month after month, year after year. how's a company supposed to collect recurring monthly fees if people quit after a few months?

Why would you want to reach the level cap so quickly anyway? Then you want to stay that level for the entire remaining time you're playing? You're not making any sense... hurry up and level so I can stop leveling?

Sorry if someone already tore you a new one about this. I just couldn't be bothered going through this ridiculous thread to check.

To the OP:

Personally, I feel there is an overwhelming sense of  "righteousness" on the Alliance side. As if to think they are "good" or "better" or "ultimately going to win this long-ass battle"... I believe this sense comes from the fact that all Alliance races ('cept these new Draenei whatchamacallems) are typical "good" races destined to battle evil wherever it lies.

Sure sure, there are evil humans, dorfs and gnomes... I'm obviously referring to the way the Alliance races are portrayed in WoW as well as all the D&D novels and games and such. There just aren't any Lawful Good Undead Warlocks historically, know what I mean?

Anywho... this overwhelming feeling that a person is right and deserves to win before stepping foot into battle just because they are a Night Elf or Human (or white... should I even have gone there?) distracts them from the truth. It clouds what's really going on. I bet if these Warcraft - fan - wannabe's actually read up on the Warcraft history, they might change their tune.

On the other hand, knocking sense into the minds of Humans (or Night Elves, Gnomes, Dorfs and white people alike) tends to be a fruitless endeavor, but in my opinion, is the REAL good vs evil battle to be fought.

Naaz.

Edit:     Shoot, meant to add in the other side of it. Like the fact that the horde has their own sense of righteousness but from an underdog position. Like cornering a wolverine... see one out in the woods and you have a shot at battling one, corner one and yer fekked! After having been beaten down for so long, used and abused, and treated as "evil"... the Horde are sick and tired and ain't gonna take it no more!  (just summing it up there, lost my steam after posting then realizing I wasn't finished.)  ;)
