I vote to ban the world fantasy from all future MMOs.

Bin fantasy MMOs and lets try to use a bit more imagination.

5 - Total missed opportunity

Watered down, appeal to the masses, generic crapfest of cope-outness, and a shadow of what it could and should of been. I'm sure there are some people with low expectations who will 'like' it though. Me, I've got higher expectations for a game named Star Trek Online.

This game has given me those hard to recapture first MMO feelings from my UO/AC1 days.

Totally right!!

First MMO in many many years that gives that first MMO feeling - and that's worth alot!

Older players will find combat tactics limited, but it actualy matters less in many ways, same goes for levels. Its just fun for the sake of "fun". Building is where you will find your challenge moving past your 25 man raid pending how big you go.
I also like its not based purely in a D&D type world. The world is "timeless" with Pirates in the one end and a rocket you fly on in another...
The Kid in you should make the adult in you have some fun, ofcause you are bying it for kids after all.... right?

My current combat tactic:
- Press 1 button every 1.8 secs
- Enemy dies
- Jump up and down

I'm pretty used to "limited" :P

QFT !!! :)

You mean you hope they get it right. Taking their time doesn't mean it will be right. :)

I hope they hurry and get it right. :)

Exactly

Looking past a bit of lag/poor animation, I love the style and quality of the graphics.

I really can't see Jan 2010 being realistic, there is far too much hype, and marketing to be done to squeeze it all into 2 and a half months.

Maybe summer 2010... like end of summer-ish, even then I wouldn't hold my breath.

If I had to bet I would say Q3 of 2010.

Welcome to the F2P micro-transaction grind.
Only Asian gamers enjoy that kind of crap. Anyone with half a brain will realize that most micro transaction MMOs are hastily put together for the purpose of making the most amount of money with the least amount of effort.

The F2P MMO developer will claim to care about their game and not have unbalancing item mall stuff, but if they didn't no one would buy anything. Having only differently skinned gear in the item mall would never generate the revenue F2P MMOs are looking for. To stay competitive in most F2P games you either have to spend and ungodly amount of time playing (sometimes even that isn't enough) or spend a lot of money in micro-transactions.

Any given F2P stupid player fanbase will always use this line: "Why complain? You are playing a FREE game! No one is making you spend money! WoW sucks!" whenever someone points out the balancing and countless other problems. While the developers themselves won't use harsh words they will still point out that theirs is a FREE game... They will never take responsibility for fixing their shitty games, but will keep them running to get as much money as possible from new suckers.

By playing a P2P game, you know that you will get a relatively even playing field, even though there will inevitably be some leveling bots and gold farmers here and there. But at least you know that the developer is working hard to balance the game, provide new content and usually listen to their subscribers. When you subscribe to their game they have to try their best to keep you happy because they will lose you otherwise. And not just WoW. Age of Connan has improved significantly since it's rocky start, Warhammer has changed for the better (it's keeping a steady population now), Lotro is also doing relatively good, and EVE has been flourishing because they listen to their subscribers.

The companies who destroy their game will suffer what happened to SWG, and those that just don't deliver will get a Tabula Rasa (which actually had some potential and I was sad to see go). Basically with P2P the developer will take full responsibility, while F2P developers will pull a "well it's free" along with as much money from suckers as they can.

Why is Aion going P2P and being tuned for western market? Because the developer wants to provide the quality western gamers are used to. This will let them either fail if they don't deliver or make much more than they would ever if it were kept as a micro transaction garbage. Sure some would play it but the majority of gamers will see it for what it is and not bother.
Edit:
Also think about all these badly slapped together "mmofps" games that are flooding the market. WarRock and WolfTeam and whatever other piece of generic garbage there is. That is just a sad, sad attempt to make some money with micro-transactions. The games look and feel horrible, are completely unbalanced because of item malls. They are have nothing to do with "MMO" and instead just throw together some customization and level progression of character. When you try to enter a match they even have a god-damned lobby menu! Why not play a good and balanced multiplayer fps like CoD4? Or Counter-Strike? Those games are essentially the same thing (100x better mind you) without character progression.

Even games that have not been "just slapped together" such as Huxley are stupid money grabs. Huxley is essentially what happens when you fuck up Unreal Tournament. No balance, shit maps and lag-infested matches. Oh and some character progression along with 2 cities where your avatar can run around and get quests which require you to go in a tunnel or maze-like dungeon and shoot at the worst AI bugs ever. And you can level up! Great, except fix the damn game first. No! Not by putting an item mall... That will just ruin balance even more! Korean games at their finest.

Longest rant ever.

Excellent post!!1 - totally agree!!

The day they make the top MMOs Item Mall/RMT is the day I quit MMOs. (hope you're paying attention SOE)

This game is a disaster waiting to happen.

They have totally missed an opportunity - but they don't seem to understand that.

They will though.. 3 months after release... they will.

Not a bad idea.

BUT would need to be top notch, late night, British comedy.

NOT American - god loving - play it safe - canned laughter needing - behind the times - watered down - healthy family fun - super white teeth smiling - virginity keeping - world loves us - government ass-kissing - flag shagging - Map Fearing - USA DRIVEL!!!

What is the appeal of housing in MMOs?
I don't see the point.
I didn't really care for the fact in FFXI the mog house items give bonuses forcing me to have to play house.... blah

The appeal of housing n a virtual world, with virtual people and virtual identities is pretty obvious to anyone with half a brain TBH.

Simple FACT.

80% of all RMT/F2P mmorpgs I have played were CRAP

80% of all P2P non-RMT mmorpgs I have played were NOT CRAP

There is something obvious going on here, I wonder what it is?

There is a difference between a game with multiplayer elements and an MMO.

This game will NOT have thousands of players playing together, they are misrepresenting how the game works.

My main objection is not to this game, since I actually love city building games. My objection is the continued back handers certain websites take to allow almost anything to gain column space, and then try to justify it with some lame excuse.

But by all means allow the crap to continue, within a year you will have trouble finding that news on "WoW or EQ" because this whole site will be full of mainstream big money companies buying front page space and rankings with cold hard cash, and drowning out the real MMORPGs.

Soon we will see an announcement with excuses of diversification from normal MMORPG games to provide the members a more rounded look at games in general.

If I want news on mainstream stuff I will go to the sites that can do that and do it better.

Sorry but this is NOT an MMO by ANY normally accepted standard definition.

MMORPG you are playing a very dangerous game here which will bite you in the ass in the long term.

Don't play us for fools and keep this site genre specific only, your getting big headed again just like the RMT adverts.

LOL the website no longer exists. ALREADY??? These guys gone bust already or something? lol

I will Never subscribe to ANY RMT game. Whether its an compulsary or a voluntary option, even if it's for fluff items.

RMT is a slap in the face to the unwritten rules of this genre, it breaks the gaming spirit of MMOs.

MMORPGs are a special kind of gaming genre, immersion is key for many people, and even just knowing that the person in front of me could be wearing or using an item that they have purchased out of game and with no prior effort, is contrary to everything this genre is and should be about.

RMT is a slipper slope, at first it will be sneaked in the back door and then like a virus it will spread to everything. We need to make a stand NOW! NO to RMT or ANY kind.

ANY game with RMT of ANY kind will NOT get me as a subscriber.

So that's one potential customer lost. And if there's 1 theres a lot more.

I have a 8800GT 1GiG Memory.

I have to say that physX is the biggest waste of space ever to enter the graphics market. It's buggy as hell, causes no end of compatability issues with all sorts of games, and has almost no future in this business.

It is purely a marketing ploy, and a badly implemented one at that. 99% of all games with physics do not use ANY part of the physX system. It is useless junk and within a short time span we will see it removed from Nvidia cards, or entirely reworked fromt he ground up.

Oh Well done for resurrecting a YEAR OLD THREAD.

Don't forget the monthly subscription fees are WAYYYY overpriced!!

Also a complete lack of expansions, the entire game world is just one big ball, they haven't added any new areas since that failed moon questing area that no-one even bothers going to anymore.

They really need to get a new Dev, the original one never does anything, personally I think he never really existed, and is just a PR stunt by fanbois!

This should be a fun game.

It will not be in any way shape or form related to SWG. If you think this is going to provide an experience even slightly like SWG then you will be sadly mistaken.

This game is a completely different entity. It will be more like a theme park MMO but set in a Star Warsey environement.

Lower your expectations and wipe all trace of SWG from your mind and you will not be dissapointed.

this game will be themepark bubblegum Star Wars. But hopefully alot of fun to play.
