If you read the whole post, the delay is for streamlining the combat system as the beta testers thought it would be too complicated to learn, and double the time it took to reach lvl 20 and enter the online part, although I do enjoy complicated games(cough cough SWG before the dreaded NGE cough cough).

Hmm... I hope they don not dumb it down to make it less skills based... that'd suck

I dunno... I'm not very enthused by the Logos aspect of this game.
Honestly I doubt Garriott can ever do anything successful again.

The first time they redesigned the whole game... they said they had too many "superstars" in the team and somehow... too many cooks spoiled the broth... I think it's just "Lord British" who seriously need and attitude adjustment... he aint all that really... maybe he should go with an existing IP cause his ideas suck.

Looks really nice.
However the only way I'll be trying this is with a free trial.

Is it wrong that the second I saw this game, I dismissed it for just another, run of the mill, based off some type of ancient chinese mythology, using a cash shop, low polygonal, hacknslash, generic cookie cutter, asian grinder?

Nope... I feel that way right now.
These oriental game all suck bad.

For this stage of developpement it looks wicked.
Can't wait to play this!

The try to make support interesting for the crowds *shrug*...

WAR has basically the same class, the Warrior Priest.

What I don't understand: Why don't you let us supporters keep our Heal/Buff-Chars who can't do anything else? All we want to do is Buff and Heal, we don't want to stand in the thick of battle, we don't want to make 8.000 dam crits, we want to stand behind and Heal and keep the group alive and maybe CC here and there.

Bleh.

I don't think the Conquerors are support either. They're damage melee + buffs

It's true that more and more MMOs are stepping away from the support classes... especially when they involved a lot of PvP like Conan or WAR. Support classes often complain that they cannot compete in PvP... or that they are prime targets.

For many people ... for a class to be interesting it has to allow them to participate actively in the game and in MMOs the many activity is almost always combat... vs NPCs or in PVP.

So either you have pure support classes and need to balance the game so that they are useful... meaning that groups have a hard time without em... that model makes the class less popular... and there for create a demand that will keep many players from finding that key member for their group to be successful.

Or they go for a hybrid that will bring in more people to the class...

yeah, sounds like a tank with offense and buffs.

In City of Heroes the Scrapper (balanced Offense/Defense melee class) quickly became one of the best solo PvP choice...

And quickly the Defender or Corruptor group... (the buffers for each sides) became the ultimate PvP teams...

Now they're throwing all this into a single class...

That's gonna be Brutal.

Somehow I get the feeling this will be the predominant class for PvP.

It sounds pretty powerful.

I disagree... there are fewer good superhero names than a made up name for an elf...

I think you perfectly illustrate why it's a great policy.

You sit on tons of great names.
You do not play the game regularly and only activate your account occasionally.
You admit not having time to level up these characters even in the rare times you reactivate your account.

Distribute 30 of these great names to 30 active people and frankly... it's one unhappy non-customer for 30 happy customers.

I suggest you keep your account active... or pick the names you truely cherish that you can level up and hope no one wants the others.

You're not gonna be happy with anything I have to say... or what most people with an opinion on this have to say.
The world is not against you, it's against what you think is your right to reserve names in a game you do not play and it doesn't care that you could potentially return but now wont.

I don't currently play the game and have great names reserved... in the back of my mind I always think I could return to the game cause I have great memories playing the game... but my level 30s, 40s and 50s are not going anywhere and now if I were to come back... I could potentially grab names I always wanted but could never get...
I'm tempted to reactivate.

nah I think blu ray will be as dead as betamax in two years time

I think both formats have no future.

They're more reminiscent of the mini-disc than the VHS/Betamax.

They both have failed to generate any significant numbers in sales.
I largely blame Sony for abandoning the consortium of companies they helped put together (the DVD Group) to come of with the original DVDs to try and corner the market once more with a media storage format.

In the end you'll have readers that do both... and no one will really care that these overly expensive formats can store 7x their movie content... or bring hi-res to their old 4:3 TVs

There will be far more paying members well served by this than potentially old players returning but discouraged by this measure

You can make level 7 on any character in one casual night of 3-4 hours.
If you have name reserves you want to hold on to than keep your account active and keep paying or level up these characters.

The first time when they did this they released a whole bunch of names for the release of CoV. I got to login and pick long desired names and really prompted me into starting new alts with those names.

This measure is more than fair.

(in the forums and on the Triumph server I was known as Premium)

I am an MMO(RPG) veteran and i am sick and tired of watching the genre getting hijacked by the "L33t and K00l" crowd that doesnt even take the time to read a quest enunciate because all they want is "to kill things".

Since the companies discovered that the genre sells the standards were lowered down so much, to please the lowest common denominator, that games arent even challenging anymore and all they offer is variants of : kill 10 rats, deliver this or gather x of that.

Basically its high time that we, the players, the people that pay for games, demand that some basic differences are respected, get the RPG factor back to MMORPGs and demand the companies to supply products that meet our standards instead of endless variations of "kill mobs with friends". You want to shoot things? You have all the right to want that; demand products that supply what you want. You want mindless hack and slash? There you go, by all means knock yourself out, but please stop ruining other people experiences in games that should be aimed at people that want more then to "kill 10 this and 20 of that".

I think registering XP points for creatures killed is too easy and simple.
If you go back to the Pen and Paper RPG... that's what we called Hack & Slash...
Although fun from time to time, hack & slash is merely a recreation from the real RPG...

When they announced Dungeons and Dragons I tought for a sec that we'd have some better translations of the pen and paper game... growth from adventuring. Seriously... does it really matter that you wiped every single creature in the dungeon? Was that what the quest was about? Mobs are supposed to be an obstacle to advancement... fighting them is not the advancement.

EQ had a whole bunch of half explored ideas and it seems with time MMOs only filtered through them to take what already worked rather than trying to make new things work.

Obviously one of the problems with well crafted questing content is that it's often if not always static and someone always make up the walkthrough for all of it and basically ruins the feeling of accomplishment... instead even if you finish the quest by yourself... you feel like you're loosing speed compared to the server population for not doing the walkthroughs...

They need some measure of randomization in rewards... quest contacts... paths... dungeons... etc.
They need to  have challenges that can only be surmounted through experience... and not communicated knowledge.
They need to invest time on well crafted quests.
And most of all... they need to improve how they track character advancement.
Make the rogue useful again to non PvP situations
Stop making the Mages into glass canons... they're the ones that go invisible... the resourceful ones
Warriors/Fighters are the main damage dealers.
Clerics aren't walking powerups dispensers.

How's this gonna work in PvP?... I dunno... maybe not everyone is the fighting class?
This idea where everyone needs to fight on equal grounds is what prevents classes from being well translated... and seeing some non combat oriented classes.

WAR is just gonna be flagged by the critics as another WoW copycat just like LOTRO. Hey, I'm just letting yall know. If you don't believe me, just go read the reviews/previews/news...Gamespot, IGN, 1up, Xplay, PCgamer, etc.

Even if it were true... what's your point?

The heck with it... I'm done explaining to people how Warhammer is the rich IP the original Warcraft stole from or how this is more of a copy of the gameplay from Dark Age of Camelot... which this company made and came out prior to WoW... or how not "WoW clone" is anymore a WoW Clone than WoW is an EQ Clone...

Let me speak in a language you'll understand.

WAR is a WOW CLONE... it exactly like WOW but better and newer!!!
Think of WoW... now look at it and see how it's the the faggy little brother of a 20x cooler bigger brother..

You liked WOW? You'll love this cause it's like WoW but you can level up doing PvP... also the PvP in WAR is not an after thought... the whole game is balanced around it!... so you get REAL class balance even if you just want to PvE!!!

In WAR ... EVERYONE fights... you don't stand back and heal and become the number 1faggy  target... you're as badass as the next guy.

Warhammer is over 20 years old... it ALREADY has the RTS games, TCG, Board games, miniatures, RPG... etc

In WAR you look badass... not like a freakin fruitcake...

-In WAR... Dwarves are cool.
-WAR is is like WOW but doesnt have gnomes... (how gay do you have to be to play that!!!)
-Undeads? fuck undeads... who wants to be a freakin zombie? You wanna be a Chaos Lord... the mudda of a bad asses!!!!

Time to move on to the next gen WoW !!!!!!!!!! That's the WARzilla!!!!

Right now I like the Greenskin characters and zone better... better than what we saw in the previous part of the interview where they displayed screens from the Dwarf starter zone...

On the Dwarf side everything is very blocky and they don't look at all like they concept art... the Dwarf concept art is truely amazing... some of the best I've seen ever. Then they go ahead and pull out octogonal tubes that are supposed to be cannons?...

The dwarf faces look like they're painted on a flat surface.

I hope the screens we saw were prior to the revamp... not after... otherwise they need to put even more work into it.

One thing I realized when looing at the orc area however is that they could use some visual effect for objects in a distance... a light fog... something that makes objects further away appear whiter... this way when you look at a scene like a forest or mountains... everything doesnt just appear to be the same color and texture... that has a cheap feel to it ...with a fog effect you can make things out from one another better... it's a simple effect that adds a lot of depth.

...They need some of that pretty much everywhere I think. In the dwarf area it would add perspective to the enormous statues... it's something you barely detect consciously... but if you stand next to a 100 meter statue... the top of it would be a little faded into fog... meaning a little whiter and less detailed... than the enormous feet next to which you'd be standing.

They sort of have a distance effect where you just stop seeing things in the horizon... but I'm talking about objects in the field of view...
In these swamp pics... everything seems to be the exact same color... like a big green filter... or a big brown filter in other parts... maybe they should hire someone who's got cinematography experience... like especially someone who's dealt with setting colors in port-production movie making...

How do you define failure? People still play all of the SOE games, so they failed because they do not have 9 million users like WoW? Asherons call 2 failed because it is no longer available, it failed but I don't think any of SOEs game can be called failures. Not as successful as other games maybe.

A game fails when it cannot attract enough of an audience that would pay for the development of additional content and bug fixes that would sustain that player base. Additionally... it can also be considered a failiure if it really short of achieving the potential confered by it's IP and the generated hype... and instead simply gets by...

Most MMOs are failiures because most MMOs these days are based on very promising IPs... D&D, Star Wars, LoTR, Matrix, etc...

Yes people still play SOE games... people on the "Station"... Station is an artificial respirator that keeps crappy games alive by selling membership packages. Matrix should be dead. SWG... STAR WARS Galaxies... should be at the 5 million registered users marker... it cycled so many people in and out it's not even funny. SWG is a failure.

As for Vanguard... if Microsoft was smart enough to pull out when they saw Sigil wasn't going anywhere and was holding on to it's "carte blanche" contract. SOE should have pushed back the release date... like NCsoft did with Cryptic and City of Heroes. Vanguard has butched is launch so horribly... it's a failure.

EQ2... well it may be named Everquest 2 but we all know it never became the "next everquest". I think the jury is still out on EQ2 but it is far from having met the potential anyone would have predicted it would have when it was announced. It was dwarfed by WoW and EQ1... so it's poor performance can be said to be... circumstancial.

SOE has a bad track record for handling people's accounts, billing and providing customer service as well.

SOE has many offices and different teams has different track records... this is being develloped by SOE Seattle. However, there is a trend of bad decisions from the higher ups. This game could be great... but I can see some fucktard suit coming up with dumb decisions and pissing off the player base... the PC version anyways.

This game sounds promising. I hope it has depth but it's not likely from an action based MMO. Also

Them pictures look bland and lack atmosphere :\ Looks very poor and worse than WOW IMO.

All this is pre-open-beta stuff... showing characters in a starter zone... so lowbie gear...

I admit although they did a good job so far... I'd really like em to be closer to their concept art...
The concept art is phenomenal!!!!!

-The faces of the dwarves just look painted on...
-Very little reflections... no texture difference between beard and armor... is there any reflection maps and bump maps... Gouraud shading?
-That canon is very blocky... it's not a cylinder but some kind of polygonal tube... a very matte one at that...
-Gold (which doesnt look like gold without reflections) seems to ornate everything... in some places it just looks weird... like they painted on gold stripes everywhere?
-I understand dwarven archeticture is supposed to be enormous and make you feel... dwarfed... but it just looks like EVERYTHING is enormous except you... 30' meter square floor tiles? What is that grate in the big canon screen supposed to keep out? the holes in it are like 50' square... they should play with the scales more... making some of this stuff "human sized" would make the enormous parts shine a little more...
-the rockface on the the mountain side really lacks details... it's like Super Mario World for the Gamecube type detailing (none)

This is THE game I plan on playing (and Marvel Universe Online)... so I don't say this to bring it down... but I hope this is not what I see when the game releases.

But anyways... Conan probably put out the worst screenshots ever when they started announcing the game and the graphics look pretty good now... I'm sure the graphics will only get better for WAR... they're already pretty good just a little boxy...

You can't compare with WoW beta either... Blizzards never lets anyone see anything that is unfinished. They don't want people like me ripping their preview to shreads... ... we're lucky Mythic lets us see this stuff even if its unpolished.

ROFL

I was reading real fast and at first when I can across this:

...such as obtaining the codes to the security system or disarming it somehow, sleeping the guards with gas; while the ParaGON...

I thought I read "sleeping with the guards... with gas"

For just a second I thought... why do you need to tell me that the guards I distract by sleeping with them have gas?

Considering the crowd it is aimed at: WoW crowd, Kids from GamesWorkshop, and its cartoony style its no suprise that quite a few schoolboys have rushed out to get into beta...

That schoolboys barb seems gratuitous... WoW has many adults playing as it is easy on the casual player... and even though they still have a market... the height of GamesWorkshop's popularity was 20 years ago... the "GamesWorkshop kids" are in their 30s now.

What has this game done to you?

Looks really good! This game will be eye candy for sure!

I hope the "fun factor" is there as well.

Most MMOs would be happy to get this many suscribing players...

This game should hit the 5 million customers easily.
