It's gona be a hybrid between Starcraft and Diablo :P

Each community has the seeds of it's own destruction. Without proper guidance, administration or leadership, it will turn bad fairly quickly.

A proper community needs someone to take care of it. Either directly or indirectly but you cannot simply hope that 100 humans will properly behave according to our defined moral standards... specially not on the internet lol.

In gaming, the best communities are the ones that are provided with tools to administer themselves.

SWG was a good example of a community that could keep itself entertained with the user created content. Forums were bad though

Looking for an MMO for my nephews, 9 and 11. They've played Club Penguin, and they talked about Free Realms. Any other good ones out there? Is Wizard 101 any good? Also, any good ones coming up over the horizon? (I heard about Lego Universe...)

why don't you buy your kids a football and teach them how to play outside?

Said by a person named "GETVIOLATED"

Seriously?

Wizard 101 is great

Maple Story is amazing

EVE-Online if you want your kids to become little rocket scientist by 20 (or evil dictator?)

Mabinogi is very fun but the chat is iffy...

Earth Eternal

Free realms is well done and fun, I actually enjoy it a lot.

Dofus is nice but complexe

World of Warcraft is not a bad game at all, it's well polished and simple enough to learn.

Also, to all the parents out there... chill out on the "how to raise a kid"

I was raised into martial arts in he morning, with a soccer ball in the afternoon and with a Super Nintendo at night or on rainy days.  Most of my friends in my street were pretty much raised like me... today, half of us are finishing our Master or PHD degrees. Some of us are also famous musicians, actors or have an incredible career... Not just rich but fun! One thing we always agree on is that Video games, Computers, internet are the items that mostly inspired us throughout our childhood.

Great article and I have a feeling that this game will do well. This will probably attract a lot of players that wishes to just have some great fun in the world of Star Trek.

I'm also thinking that players that wanted a space mmo but got turned away from the overwhelming beast that is EVE will find their home with STO.

OH NO!!!!! CCP doesn't really have 300K subs but only 200K with 100K alt accounts!!! THE TEARS AND DECEPTION I am feeling right now is too much to handle!!!

Seriously, my life is really ruined now...CCP has screwed with us one time too much!!!!! We must fight back!

on a more serious note... why are we debating over the amount of subs that EVE has?

Stealth is quite silly in MMOs.

Binb to player items is quite silly... specially without any decay. Might as well not have any crafting or economie at that point.

Internet in Montreal is among the fastest and most reliable in North America, I can`t really complain. Sure there`s a limit but if you`re not into pirating then it`s really not a big deal.

great article btw, it`s true that we do take internet for granted but then again... it is granted in some countries and such. I carry a small Archos Media system with me. Whenever I need the web, I just log on and bang, in at least 35% of Montreal, I can log a wifi network without a problem. (most shops have broadcast stations)

After seeing the WIS engine of CCP, it`s hard to think anyone else will ever do better.

Earth and Beyond changed over time as the story progressed. Very fun world to explore :)

Mankind Online evolved and changed, landscape, territories and such...

I think Dofus changes due to it's echosystem mechanics.

This actually looks like a lot of fun. I might give this game a try.

I'm from the old days of gaming when Doom was slowly starting to introduce death matches or when I would play with 8 buddies on Syndicate Wars and RP with them via a large BBS organization in Montreal.

I think my first true MMO was when Mankind Beta started back in early 1998.

I don't remember using the term MUN though... I always used PO

"Player Of" = PO

Just a few facts to put people back on the right track.

Quake 3 and CounterStrikes are the still the big reference. However, Call of Duty is the quickly taking it's ground.

MMOFPS is not a new thing but it's a poorly utilized style... One day someone should wake up.

Well Blizzard and Activision could make a new World War 2 online with ease by using a game style like call of Duty.

The possibility is there... is it the best idea ever? Not so sure.

People are forgetting something... EVE evolves each 6 months. EQ had a few major evolution but it was essentially the same, expansions after expansions... EVE 2003 and EVE 2009 are 2 completely different games. You could have considered EVE : Trinity as EVE II.

Now the graphics are getting a new overhaul, effects and such are getting some love. Just when the new generations of MMO will be hitting the market, EVE: WIS will probably arrive... keeping once again, the game here and alive for a very long time.

It was fun waiting 10 minutes for a shuttle in SWG.

You got to know the folks around the server, trade, shop around the close stores or get some buffs.

I think it's good that MMORPG covers RPGs as well. I think it's brilliant idea and that you guys should really consider covering more RPGs in the long run. Diversity wouldn't hurt this site and it's still part of the name... RPG :)

I'll be buying Dragon Age soonish... it looks like a well worth purchase!

Why am I reading so many negative things about Darkfall Online?  It looks cool from all that I can see.  It has a lot of the things I want and things it doesn't have are coming out soon (apparently player shops).

Why is this game doing so poorly and if I shouldn't play it, what should I play?

Here are the things that I like about it thats drawing me in:

Emphasis on PvP (not necesarily open, just pvp that has purpose)

Empasis on Player-run societies (Houses, towns, forts)

Fun Crafting (Putting your signature on things, feeling attached to an item you work hard on)

Large Scale Sandbox Style

What other games offer these things and what about Darkfall am I not seeing?

I've played and wrote 2 extensive blogs about Darkfall. It's a great game but there's a few reasons I've left.

#1. Darkfall is indeed a sandbox but it's lacking in so many features that it's hard to really openly do something you truly desire.

#2. I have no problem with open world PVP but Darkfall actually catter and encourage griefers. The game has full of features but in most part, it's all half ass.

PVP with a purpose? Darkfall is probably the most meaningless PVP game I ever played. I am not joking... there was more reasons for me to PVP in WOW then in Darkfall. At least in WOW, back in the old days, I pvped to keep my horde zone safe from the alliance and vice versa. In Darkfall, it's all about griefing and it's either I griefed or got griefed. I'm not looking for honor at all cost but seriously, I got ganked like 10 times during my first hour in-game lol...

Player cities, boats and such... all amazing ideas. However, the way it's implemented, it's almost not worth it.

Finaly, for me... well, I didn't mind all the issues I mentionned but Darkfall doesn't really let you be a casual player.. you're either Hardcore and on top of things or you're just canon fodder. There's no in between really...

Quick question, where is everyone getting their numbers? Last I've heard, NC didn't release any official numbers and from what I can see; when I look at the stock market, it aint that bad. They peaked when the game released and are now dropping at the expected rate. So this means, the product release was pretty good.

From what I can see from inside or outside the market of NCsoft, it's positive.

So I'm really not sure where this entire thread is trying to get at.

XFIRE is good to followTrends and as most FPS players would say, it's mostly useful to FPS players... Xfire allows us to track each other and follow each other on servers. What's the next argument, Steam community group size?
