"New school" games aren't about selling boxes as you put it. Rarely does an MMO make a profit on box sales. The reason for the big drop in subscribers has less to do with the quality of the game and more to do with the number of options gamers have in games. 10-15 years ago your options were pretty limited in terms of MMOs. Nowadays you have 3-4 high profile MMO releases a year and even more if you count indie releases. If you had the kinds of options we have now back then I'm sure you'd have the same decrease in membership a few months after release of a new game.
Most older MMOs stuck in the grind to hide the fact that they lacked content. Modern day MMOs have the money to add in content to hide the apparent grind all MMOs have. If you want old school style gameplay and adventure then don't follow the quest lines and leave the beaten path. Even World of Warcraft has a huge world to explore if you just take the time to explore it. You can play an MMO any way you want to play it, you just choose to play it the easiest way presented to you. You get caught up in the race to max level and forget to actual enjoy the game you're playing.

MMOs aren't all clones. You can't tell me a game like Tera online is similar to a game like Champions Online is similar to a game like Eve. We have so much variety now a days compared to 10 years ago it's ridiculous.

You want to leave the trinity behind? You got it
You want action gameplay that requires precise timing to avoid attacks? You got it
Turnbased combat and random battles? You got it
Tactical combat in the style of games like Final Fantasy tactics? You got it
Want to forget about combat and focus on gathering and your craft? You got it
You want an MMO that completely revolves around space travel? You got it
You want to craft your own super hero and fly around a city fighting crime? You got it
Want a more modern setting where every urban legend and conspiracy theory is true? Got it
Want to be a master of martial arts in an Asian inspired world? Got it
How about a barbarian that wields a huge axe and chops off the heads of his enemy? Got it
Victorian era? Steampunk? Yep
Open World PvP? Got it
Heavily story based gameplay? Got it
Seamless worlds? Got it
Your own private instances? Got it

10-15 years ago every game was the same. They were made for you. Now a days developers are taking chances, trying new styles and settings and gameplay mechanics, and you have become disgruntled because of it. You can't blame the developer or the community. They've grown and you're the one who is being left behind because you refuse to grow with them.
Despite its many many flaws, Teras combat is fantastic. The endgame required coordination, skill, and a deep understanding of your class and abilities. They found a way to keep everyone involved in combat without moving away from the trinity, and the slightest hesitation from one party member could spell defeat. No game can even comes close to what Tera offers with its combat. Too bad the rest of the game is shallow and dull.
MMORPGs are whatever you make of them.

You can go out and explore, you can skip the quest hubs and rely on grinding mobs, you can discover rare spawns, secret quests, and create your own fun. You choose not to.

The games haven't changed, you have. Yes features have been added to make it more accommodating for people who just want to jump in and quest a bit, but you don't have to choose to use these features. You don't have to go online and look at the most time efficient leveling tactics, or where to obtain the best gear to twink out your toon, or how to duo that difficult world boss.

You say you're tired of hand holding, well then let go of their damn hand and take the time to actually look around. Your tunnel vision is seriously blinding you from the fact that the experience you are looking for is available in plenty of MMOs if you actually choose to have it.

And yes I played Everquest when it first came out.
Someone posted this on another forum. No source so it may not be true.

Players Who Own FFXIV Version 1.0
Players who own FFXIV version 1.0 will not need to purchase the PC version of FFXIV: ARR and will be able to download the FFXIV: ARR software for free.
* Details on downloading the FFXIV: ARR software will be provided at a later date.

Furthermore, users who have version 1.0 registration codes that have not yet been registered will be able to register them and play FFXIV: ARR on PC at the start of the service.

Players Who Own the FFXIV version 1.0 Collector’s Edition
Players who own the FFXIV version 1.0 Collector’s Edition will receive the FFXIV: ARR Collector’s Edition in-game bonus items (Helm of Light, Baby Behemoth Minion, Behemoth Barding, and Coeurl Mount) for free. The in-game bonus items will be delivered via Moogle Letter when FFXIV: ARR launches.

Players Who Have Fulfilled the Requirements of the Legacy Campaign
Players who have fulfilled the requirements of the Legacy Campaign will be able to take part in early access and play before the official start of service.

Important Information for Customers Purchasing the PlayStation 3 Version
You will only be able to register one copy of FFXIV: A Realm Reborn for PlayStation 3 to a Sony Entertainment Network account. It is not possible to register or play two or more copies of the PS3 version on the same account even if you purchase additional software. Please note that only one Sony Entertainment Network account can be linked to a Square Enix Account.

Logging into the Same Account on both Windows and PlayStation 3
Customers who own a copy of FFXIV version 1.0 and wish to use their account on the PlayStation 3 version will need to purchase a copy of the PlayStation 3 version. It will then be possible to use your characters on either platform by tying your existing service account to the PlayStation 3 version upon launching it for the first time. However, please note that your account will only be able to log into one platform at a time.

Collector's Edition Digital Upgrade Service
The Collector's Edition digital upgrade offers customers the ability to upgrade their standard FFXIV account to Collector's Edition status via the “FFXIV Service Center” website that is scheduled to be opened at the launch of official service, which then grants the in-game bonus items included with the Collector's Edition. Customers in possession of the Collector's Edition for either version 1.0 or A Realm Reborn will receive these Collector's Edition items without needing to purchase the upgrade.
* Characters that have already been created will be able to receive the items.

It would make sense. They had a set release date they had to meet in order to coincide with the tv show. Most MMOs miss their first release date, so I'm sure Trion over staffed themselves in order to get the game out and make it relatively playable. Now that the game is released and they have no looming deadline they can streamline development. Defiance was a little to amibitious of a project for Trion. Despite its flaws its still a relatively entertaining experience. If it wasn't for the deadline that had to be met I'm sure it could have been a great game.
I find it funny because people having been making this complaint since the game was announced, and you're just catching on now? This game has always been a mix of various genres and it's never hidden that fact. You've either not been following the game, or you're a troll looking for something to complain about.
I am an avid Tera player but the cash shop is way more than cosmetics. I can drop some cash on emp and sell it for thousands of gold and use that to buy some of the best armor, weapons and crystals in the game. When I hit 60 my buddy did just that for me so I could jump right into MCHM and GvG. You can buy alkahest that are more effective than the ones found in game and use them to upgrade your equipment too. This makes a huge difference once you consider how difficult it is to masterwork and +12 items and this is required to be compeitive in PvP for most classes.

Guild Wars 2 is the same way with selling gems, but since the game lacks gear progression it isn't as much of an issue.
To the person confused by the classes.

Thaumaturge is the typical mage class using offensive elemental magic.

Arcanist sounds more like a warlock type class. They come with a carbuncle pet and use damage over time and debuff abilities.
There is more to PvE endgame than just AC and MC. You also have Sirjuka's Gallery and Temple of Temirty for advanced glyphs. For some of the easier classes you can get by without them but for certain classes, especially in PvP its a must.

PvP gear progression I believe goes BG set, conjunct (crafted with BG set + Nexus set), 3v3 set (or maybe this comes before conjunct, nobody really does this anyway), and visionmaker

PvE goes Nexus, abyss, regeants, visionmaker (I think you have one more but I don't recall)

Most of the gear grind comes from masterworking items (allows you to +12 instead of just +9 equipment), rerolling stats on items, and upgrading).

So yeah you'll probably be doing nexus for the scrolls you need to masterwork and reroll stats, tot and sg for glyphs, and ac and MC for your armor sets. They also have one more pve instance with a leaderboard. Get to the top for a special mount.

On the PvP side you don't have much. Nexus for GvG, BG and 3v3 for gear progression. They are adding a new 20v20 BG and an alliance system soon though.

So your information from Joystiq para-phrasing Paul Sage is more credible than a video with direct words from Paul Sage's mouth?

That isn't the only source that has stated that you can interact with other factions. The quote you posted is vague and doesn't really tell us anything definite.

You cant grief players in another faction, you cant be a level 1 starting the game and see level 50s from other factions in yours.

Yeah, the end-game really opens up with crafting providing the best gear and there being no raids. "Sooo, you wanna farm some crafting materials together?" Paul Sage said Crafting is gonna provide the best gear. And that dungeon gear can be upgraded from crafting. So it sounds like crafting is the be-all end-all of end game.

Updated my post about large group pve content.

"After kicking Molag's Bals, a New Game Plus type option opens up, allowing access to harder, high-level versions of the other two factions' zones (populated by your side, via a story twist yet to be revealed) sprinkled with excellent endgame loot for solo players to pick up."

Also, that hardly sounds like a real Raid. A small group can do it? Then it isnt really a Raid.. You dont do 10 man raids with 4 people.. Which tells me it isnt really gear-incentive, but for fun with a decent reward.

Reading comprehension. It says adventure zones will be doable by small groups but it has content specifically designed for larger groups. Its not your typical raid, but until we learn more we don't know what it is.

Where is that from? The only thing I can say is that it doesn't specify *only* by your side. This article clearly states you can play with members of other factions. Obviously there is some misinformation going on but you can't decide that the information you are getting it more credible.

I continue to provide quotes and links so please provide a source and we can agree that Sage is lying.

"Sage assuaged most of my fears, however, when he mentioned that once you hit level 50 and decide to play in another alliance's areas, you'll be able to play with friends in that faction. So at the endgame, things begin to open up and you can group up, chat, and run dungeons with players of other factions. The one area where things remain separate is, of course, the Alliance War in Cyrodiil."

"When I asked Sage about raiding, he said that ESO's adventure zones are designed for larger groups of PvE players. You can actually go into the adventure zones with a small group and accomplish some goals, but there are large areas in these maps dedicated to larger group experiences. There will be some warning when you're about to trigger one of these encounters (and they may even end up instanced), so a small group won't suddenly find itself face to face with a Daedric Prince!" On raiding...

"That depends on you.  With the mega-server, you'll set your playstyle preferences, and in each zone you travel too be matched up with like-minder players.  Want open pvp? Select it as a preference and you're there.  Not so much? No worries, you can carebear it up." Bill Murphy on PvP

On my phone, adding more quotes. Give me a moment.

No it hasn't, stop spreading lies.
I'm simply posting quotes from legitimate sources. This guy is speculating based on incomplete information. None of the previews I read said we cannot see players from other factions, they never said we could either. He's just making assumptions and we're taking it all as fact.
No one is going to listen to me, but this post is all speculation and grossly inaccurate. Can we please stop jumping to conclusions. The misconceptions about this game are unbelievable. I've never seen such craziness.
