I have two Samsung monitors, one for me and one for the wife...my wife's went out after a little over a year, Samsung shipped a replacement to the nearest UPS store. All we had to do was take the bad one to the store and pick up the new one, UPS even boxes up the old one and ships it back to Samsung. All it took was one simple phone call to Samsung (call center was in Dallas) to arrange it and they do this for three years after purchase.

Why are devs opposed to complex crafting?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 6/15/09 6:42:01 PM
Why is it that there has not been a game since pre-CU SWG that gives the player the ability to craft unique and custom items? For those of you that don't know what I mean, here is an example; In SWG, all the resources had variable stats such as Conductivity, Potential Energy and overall quality and each category could range from 1-1000. Resource quality and locations would change regularly so you had to explore and sample to find the best resources, sometimes it meant traveling to multiple planets and searching barren areas. So, for those who wanted to be known as the absolute best crafters, they had to really work for it, but for those that did they could demand top dollar for their goods. That handles the quality aspect, so what about the CUSTOM aspect? In SWG, say as an Armorsmith, your armor was layered. Each layer was crafted and then the layers were assembled along with the other components to make the final piece of armor. Here is the cool part, there were several types of layers, heat resist, stun resist, etc. So, you might have a customer special order some armor with kinetic and stun resist. Now, say you took that 998 overall quality/ 991 decay resist resource that you saved for special orders and made primo layers you could make some truly spectacular custom armor. Oh, I almost forgot, the customer wanted black chest and leg pieces but purple biceps, forearms, gloves, and helm to finish it off. See, crafters that would do all that made a name for themselves, they didn't just make 10 of the same chest piece that all the other armorsmiths' on the server could make. You all know what I mean, in every game since SWG I have mastered a crafting profession and it always becomes a game of undercutting the two other guys on the auction hall with the same damn swords that I made. So, again my question is, "why are devs afraid to put this kind of complex crafting into new MMOs?" Is it too hard to code? Is it a control thing?, meaning that they wouldn't be taking enough currency out of the economy? What? |

For me housing is only important when I can craft in my house and place my crafted items on vendors in my house. The only two games that I know of where that is possible are SWG and EQ2. In EQ2, I have a Carpenter and in my house I have most of the high end furniture that I can make on display, so the customer can come in see how a certain piece looks and then buy one from my vendor. Back in the old SWG days, I was a master armorsmith and in SWG you can drop armor/clothing in your house and it basically looks like a mannequin on display, so I had several suits of different types of armor on display. In that game you could even program your vendors to bark out announcements to anyone entering, like, "Wecome to Tully's Armor Shop, if you don't see anything you like, send me a mail about what you are looking for". When I can do that, I feel that I am creating my own little part of the world that I am playing in.

Lord of the Rings Online: Surviving Northdowns
News Discussion « General Discussion 5/29/09 2:17:55 PM
The North Downs may be the single best zone I have ever played through in any MMO. The amount of quests is massive and the story line progression is very well done. It is not an exxageration when they say you can go from level 20 all the way to 40 in the North Downs. |

A look at DDO and the future... DDO II?

OP, even though a few things were overlooked are a few assumptions were made that's a very good account of experiances as a new player. The issues with Korthos Island seem very sevre and could potentiall turn away new players - I hope there's a fix or something that would allow players who've not completely the quests to return to the "snowy version" of the island. /Sheathe puts away your weapons and shields. This game, even though penned as one of the founding properties of Role Play, has an extremely poor selection of /emotes and commands to facilitate players looking for a greater social experiance. /emote <comment> will say something in the first person if you're into RolePlaying; ie "/emote step's away from the greasy spot forming underneath the creaky Warforged."
I don't understand what legal interference there could be at this point. Can anyone elaborate please? |

"Golden Boy" or "Chosen One " Characters
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 5/24/09 1:56:58 PM
I have played lots of MMOs and I always seem to do the same thing. When I start a game, I usually create my first character quickly just so I can get in game and start learning the in's and outs. Then I usually start a few alts so I can begin leveling different tradeskills/professions. Then finally, I make what I call the "Golden Boy" or "Chosen one" toon that becomes my main. This is the character that gets all the love, from appearance customization, detailed Biography and the best gear made by all my crafting alts. Does anyone else do this or do I need psychiatric help? I think most people make one main and thats it, right? |

It is obvious that the game isn't for you, however, telling everyone to stay away from it period is simply autocratic. You make some valid observations, but, I think those who might be interested should try it themselves. |

Will I have to DL the High-res client if I re-activate?
The Rusty Nail (General) « D&D Online 5/14/09 7:54:04 PM
I have an inactive subscription currently, if I re-sub will the updater upgrade me to the high-res version or will I need to DL high-res seperately? I like some of the Mod 9 stuff I am seeing and I would like to get re-acclimated before it goes live. Thanks to any who respond.

Why I, as a fan of the franchise, was sorely disappointed.

I believe that there are more of us than people think and if done right, it could be very profitable. I have seen the following on someones signature line here at MMORPG.com, but I can't remember who; "give us a world, not a game...there are enough games out there already" That pretty much sums it up. |

this will not be like your favorite SWG Pre-CU

Very true frog, and I wonder why they even want this stuff either? Post your reasons as to why this will not be like your favorite SWG Pre-CU. -no dual classes - Why do you need to be more than 1 thing? -no creature handler - Go buy a dog. -Jedi will not be rare - They aren't suppose to be rare. This is Knights of the Old Republic time frame. -no player owned cities - Yeah like we really need 20 miles of silos and empty buildings scarring up the game world. -player housing? - WHY do you need this? Even in games that have it, it is just a novel idea. -player owned shops - Noone cares. -player owned vendors - Noone cares, this particular one isn't even wanted or needed.... Ragnarok anyone? (shivers) -player bases - Might be ok, this one I will say would be cool, if guilds could own a starbase or something. -space combat? - Don't really need it, or care. I think you got lost...the WoW forums are under > forums > World Of Warcraft.

Originally posted by leshtricity I agree 100%! As a veteran DM and player since the late 1970's (I know..I am old), I recognized the same shortcomings you pointed out. When I was DM'ing an epic Greyhawk campaign, my players split their time equally between dungeon crawling and city adventures within the city that I created. The thief of the group became an officer in the local Theives Guild, which provided for an excellent sub plot within the campaign. One of the players chose to become a master blacksmith on the side and eventually opened his own shop in the city. I know that not all of these elements can be feasible in an MMO, but damnit, my group should be able to at least meet at the local tavern and hold a meeting to discuss the next adventure whille SITTING DOWN at a table and having a few ALES. My only hope is that maybe there will be a DDO 2 at some point that is set in one of the more familliar worlds i.e FR, Greyhawk, DL, and that some more true roleplaying features will be included.

LFMMO laid back, good crafting, solo/group aspects, & pvp/pve
LFGame « General Discussion 5/07/09 2:08:23 PM
I have played both EQ2 and LOTRO and I can say both do fit your criteria. I would be playing EQ2 right now if I had started on a PvP server and I didn't have to pay for Station Access to get the additional character slots. I am playing LOTRO because it has the same features as EQ2 albeit that PvMP is a little different from tradittional PvP and I pay only a little over $9/month because I am a founder. |
