Then why the hell are they calling it a release, and why can people not play before said date?  It's like they're playing favoritism and saying f-u to everyone else.

Have you never played an MMO with a head start for pre-orders? It's pretty common practice and has been for years.

Yeah, but the problem here is that it was never advertised as a head-start, nor was it made clear that it was until the last few days.

That's the part that suck.

Yes it was, it was always going to be a head start.  I posted that information already.  It was only just confirmed that a wipe that was not planned was not needed.  FD never intended to have a wipe, but left it open just in case it was needed, this is very different to all the other stages were FD planned wipes.

In this case, it is not about what they intended to do, it is about what they communicated, or what was being perceived. What you posted weren't clear announcements, they were some threads buried on a forum and a fansite. You cannot expect your average customer (or even much less than average but who just doesn't have time to check all the forums!) to read the forums before they make a decision to buy a game or not.

Good communication would have been to make it so on the "buy into beta" and the "buy into release" that it was clear what you were getting, stating clearly that there was a headstart or possible headstart.

If you sell a lot of computers in the same system, prices on computers in that system will go down as the demand is lower. Players have a weighted effect on this compared to NPCs in order to make the effect more noticeable.

So if too many people are selling computers, people will need to find other trade routes or trade other commodities. Or perhaps buy the now cheap computers and sell them in a system with a higher demand.

Ahh got it, but hmm.. is that the extent of it at this point, though? Doesn't that extend to player gears, fuel, etc.?

Ikeda, it's called a forum, not a thread. You may as well get that right when criticizing people ;)

Yes yes yes... and potato and potato.  The point is at no point did I criticize, I just stated it was in the wrong area.  Which mods must have agreed with as it was moved.

I'm all about talking about games but when I scan forums, games that I'm not interested in can be looked over.  That's just me.  I have no issues with people talking about their games and I'm glad that the OP found their game.

That was more of a tongue-in-cheek comment I made, yours was in no way aggravating as we so often see around the interwebs :(

E:D is not a MMO tho. It's a heavily instanced multiplayer game, where you actually can chose to play totally alone in your own instance by flagging all other players, denying them access to your instance.

I tried the beta and it's totally overhyped imho. Not worth spending money or time on.

Yeah you would need to define what  MMO actually means to you, I understand if you don't consider it as one, but it clearly is one (we could argue this all day and get nowhere), and while yes it does use instancing, it's not typical in the way instancing is handled, it's actually a breath taking piece of tech, knowing that in just one system they could be 10000 players, but ok they are limited to 32 player instances, you could jump out of one, and into another instance.

In addition to that, all these players can have an impact on the universe and it freely allows players to travel in between single player and multiplayer, what's not to like about that !

no we don't. elite dangerous is NOT an mmo, it's a multiplayer game.

b-b-but it's massive, multiplayer and online? :((

how many mmos can you play offline or in a world of your own?

Agreed with Sarariel. Its online. Its multiplayer. Hundreds of thousand of players can intermingle and have gameplay impact each other (although in a small fashion for the most part at this point, I agree).

You cannot play offline at this point and the actions of the other players actually influence your world (factions, pricing, etc.).

Online + Multiplayer + Massive = ______

I agree it is non-traditionnal that you can make it so you avoid everyone else, but on the flip side, some people manage to do that pretty well in larger cities IRL ;)

I believe him /sarcasm off

Yeah, I still don't know what he was thinking when he said it last year =/

He admitted it was a dumb statement. He was talking about an open world where  you can build towns. Sadly, he didn't mean SWG2 =/

Ahh I missed that admission. That had me pretty riled up back then, lol

It's awesome you found a game.. but you should post in the GAME thread and not the Pub....

Well there's was more in this, emergent game play,  kickstarter, old guard etc... but yeah maybe your right. :D

Ikeda, it's called a forum, not a thread. You may as well get that right when criticizing people ;) I think the thread could very well belong in both, although the subject line said "E:D". When do we get threads with symbolic links ;)

That being said, I think it is an interesting game in those aspects, but we have to keep in mind it's still very much in its infancy; there's a lot of work left for all those elements to truly come together in the way they could.

Seriously? 64k square kilometers as in 64,000 square kilometers? Or a square of about 252 km x 252 km? Is that a typo or Smed really means 8 km x 8 km?

This is the future of gaming, where what you actually do as a player makes a difference to the environment and surroundings, be it for the better or worse.

I can only see good things for this kind of gameplay with E:D.

I agree with you.

Game makers can never churn out enough interesting high quality content fast enough in a healthy financial way, so players have to be a part of the content in a shared universe. Plus hundreds of thousands of players will always come up with something crazier/more interesting than a handful of developers, any day, so its all about giving the right tools, the right environment, the right sandbox to make that happen.

I don't think E:D is that this point yet -- it isn't. But the emergent gameplay and options that are being built into it from the get-go is already very interesting and I dearly hope they expand upon it.

The last reports state that it is up to 38%.  It is unknown what will happen if it keeps rising.

People have seen new missions forming, both for and against the Crimson State.

Well, I bet the devs kinda know :P

But yeah, I wonder as well :)

It's a deal breaker for me. I'm glad I didn't back it and I won't be buying it. I don't care if they did the Steam check DRM, but always online sucking up bandwidth is a no-no. I don't trust them now and suspect they want always online to use for their p2p distributed computing and as a crude drm tool (which is for tools).

I've been only moderately pleased with crowd funding games. The two (Dragon Fin Soup and Planet Explorers), that have kept or expanded on their vision, are late with delivery. Dragon Fin not by much. In the case of Planet Explorers they're really late and never update their KS page. They do give Steam and website updates regularly, but to me it says that even the most well intentioned devs are going to bail on the platform eventually.

Incidentally music albums I backed from my favorite indie artists have been the best payoff of Kickstarter so far. I now have a few albums that may not have ever been made by musicians that I really love.

I get that this may not be the game you're looking for, but just calling the online aspect a bandwidth suck and a disguised DRM or whatever conspiracy theory is just intellectualy dishonest.

There are actual PvP and collaborative gameplay aspects, stuff that you can play right now, today, online in this game. To pretend otherwise is delirious.

Contrary to what some people and FD would like to claim this is a single player game that you play online for DRM reasons.

FD will claim no no it is because shared economy and everyone has an effect on it bla bla......but then they say no wipe the 16 when thing go live because it doesn't matter if someone has 140 million credits due to exploiting bugs etc...thereby putting the lie to that claim.

I have played in "open play" only since betas and I think i have run into ONE other person. There will be wings (grouping) but being able to actually stay with the group will be a giant PITA due to them completely scrapping "drive slaving" which would have allowed groups to jump together.

You're linking dots in an awkard fashion. No wipe and the need for an online connection to drive a dynamic universe and reduce cheating don't necessarily clash together.

Although not very expansive at the moment, there are very real, playable PvP and collaborative aspects to this game. I'm not sure why you're twisting and bending reason to try and convince people that there isn't.

That's very interesting. Really curious to see where that concept can be pushed to.

Games that can’t verify a paid account are doomed to be pirated.  The more games are pirated, the less games will be made.

you know that all the single player games out there that have an online DRM can be pirated and played without an account, right?

the more DRM they add to single player games the less games they will sell. Its been happening for years.

The online aspect in E:D is beyond the DRM aspect; it is mostly an MMO-wannabe, just rather limited in terms of interactions and social features at this point (although they are planned and in the pipeline).

The way it ressemble an MMO in terms of online play and mechanics of that is that most processing to let the player know what's going on in the world is done server-side.

You see it as MMO-wannabe, to devs they now realize it's DRM.  The online aspect of E:D is not beyond, it is DRM.  What you described is a part of the DRM implementation.

Ahh. No, not really, no. What is there to argue? It just plain isn't that, lol.

It was never supposed to have a wipe in the first place.  Gamma was always supposed to be the soft launch for the beta backers.

Where did you get that from?

How close to a mmorpg is it, can I interact with hundreds, or thousands of other players?

You can interact in the same global universe, at a macro scale, yes, and sometimes in small-groups encounters. I think its limited to a few dozen in the same "bubble" in space right now.

Will my decisions affect other players too, to any extent?

Yes, they will; from an economics/trading, pirating and storyline-driving missions.

What type of features does it have, other then being a space sim?

A bit vague for a question, as, for me, the "space sim" genre is very, very large and can encompass many more features than there are in any game out there.

Is there a complex player run economy?

No. Players trade stuff around between stations, driving the pricing and markets from an offer/demand perspective.

mining?

Yes.

trading?

See two answers above.

crafting of some sort with blueprints or ?

Nope.

See my answers in red above, from what I understood in the FAQ (one of the most popular ones anyway, here : http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Elite:_Dangerous_FAQ) and DDA (design discussions archive, here : https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=36).

Beyond the answers above, what's important to remember is that this game is a work in progress, will include many more expansions in the future and has been designed from the ground up to support full-planet scale, FPS-style exploration and gameplay, atmospheric flight (including re-entry), full-blown economics and other MMO-esque social aspects.

All that in a 400 billion star system playground that will see a main storyline driven by player actions and choices.

I didn't like that trailer, for some reason. I think it made me feel uneasy because it was so close to the game but not quite it, just a bit more. Meh.
