Gotta love Twitch for that :) After watching a bunch of Twitch and reading a ton of FAQ/feature posts, I decided to pickup the title and give it a spin, along with an HOTAS, which was absolutely needed for me to enjoy the game.

 

Right now, it is true that there are no very complex systems or storyline/arcs or dungeons to run in for hours on end; but if you enjoy travelling around, doing the odd not-too-involving quest, trading around based on supply/demand and just trudge daily in a space sim that does feel like a "sim", that could be the right game for you. I don't get much play time, but I like that I can just pick it up, crack a couple missions, travel around a bit, buy a module and then logoff. 

 

That being said, the game is also very well done in terms of graphical and audio experience. There's a very neat design and overall feel to it that helps me immerse myself and enjoy it very much.  I'm hoping and I'm confident they will expand on the gameplay offering, but for now it works for me.

Well, it was a post on his website, about a competitor, so I think he had to sound in control and talk about his game. I do agree with his statements in general, though, about the industry and genre.

 

Where I do meet you though, is on your feeling about the guy. I'm not sure why, but I can't brush off a bad feeling about Chris Roberts. The kind of feeling I get from Brad McQuaid, for some reason *shivers*

Stop thinking gauges and level of : it is massive (one vast interconnected universe holding tens of thousands of players at once), it is multiplayer (you can play or against other players) and it is online (interwebsthingie). These are facts, no matter how you look at it or troll about it.

Exactly. And I think the term "MMO" is really wide as it stands now. As long as something is a) online (interwebsable); b) multiplayer (people's gameplay impact individual gameplay); and c) massive (many thousands doing b)), then we have an MMO.

 

Maybe we should have sub-genre or classifications to help make sense of the level of interactions between said "multi-players" gameplay?

Given that the same poll on the official forums (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=70682) yielded the same results (26.8% said BAD out of 190 answers), I think it shows they've made the right decision.

I think it's the same with ships and ship equipment. You can also affect the political power in systems by aiding one faction over another. See the player run Crimson State event, for example.

 

I'm interested to know for sure. If you can actually impact the pricing of something that impact people's gameplay, that's more significant than.. coffee, lol.

What happens if you try and visit space owned by a faction hostile to you?

The problem with Star Citizen is too much money thrown at something that has shown very little so far. And the slow, incredibly painful milking of customers. There is going to be a painful wake up at some point for that game. Too much money, too many promises, too much hype...

 

At least E:D had the courage to go out there, make a feature set and release it. But that's far from the end of the road; development continues. There's no guarantee there either, but at least a good basis that I can enjoy and be a part of TOMORROW (literally, lol :P)

Yes it was, it was always going to be a head start.  I posted that information already.  It was only just confirmed that a wipe that was not planned was not needed.  FD never intended to have a wipe, but left it open just in case it was needed, this is very different to all the other stages were FD planned wipes.    

In this case, it is not about what they intended to do, it is about what they communicated, or what was being perceived. What you posted weren't clear announcements, they were some threads buried on a forum and a fansite. You cannot expect your average customer (or even much less than average but who just doesn't have time to check all the forums!) to read the forums before they make a decision to buy a game or not.

 

Good communication would have been to make it so on the "buy into beta" and the "buy into release" that it was clear what you were getting, stating clearly that there was a headstart or possible headstart.

Yes yes yes... and potato and potato.  The point is at no point did I criticize, I just stated it was in the wrong area.  Which mods must have agreed with as it was moved.

I'm all about talking about games but when I scan forums, games that I'm not interested in can be looked over.  That's just me.  I have no issues with people talking about their games and I'm glad that the OP found their game.

That was more of a tongue-in-cheek comment I made, yours was in no way aggravating as we so often see around the interwebs :(

Yeah you would need to define what  MMO actually means to you, I understand if you don't consider it as one, but it clearly is one (we could argue this all day and get nowhere), and while yes it does use instancing, it's not typical in the way instancing is handled, it's actually a breath taking piece of tech, knowing that in just one system they could be 10000 players, but ok they are limited to 32 player instances, you could jump out of one, and into another instance.

In addition to that, all these players can have an impact on the universe and it freely allows players to travel in between single player and multiplayer, what's not to like about that !

no we don't. elite dangerous is NOT an mmo, it's a multiplayer game.

how many mmos can you play offline or in a world of your own?

Agreed with Sarariel. Its online. Its multiplayer. Hundreds of thousand of players can intermingle and have gameplay impact each other (although in a small fashion for the most part at this point, I agree).

 

You cannot play offline at this point and the actions of the other players actually influence your world (factions, pricing, etc.).

 

Online + Multiplayer + Massive = ______

 

I agree it is non-traditionnal that you can make it so you avoid everyone else, but on the flip side, some people manage to do that pretty well in larger cities IRL ;)

Have you never played an MMO with a head start for pre-orders? It's pretty common practice and has been for years.

Yeah, but the problem here is that it was never advertised as a head-start, nor was it made clear that it was until the last few days.

Ikeda, it's called a forum, not a thread. You may as well get that right when criticizing people ;) I think the thread could very well belong in both, although the subject line said "E:D". When do we get threads with symbolic links ;)

 

That being said, I think it is an interesting game in those aspects, but we have to keep in mind it's still very much in its infancy; there's a lot of work left for all those elements to truly come together in the way they could.
