It's embarassing to admit but my recollection is "Oh sh1t!!".."What the.." and I'm activating my medical clone. A [very] few seconds of total panic and it's over. I'd scouted the route with an alt and taken 2 ships through ok. Third time through was a different story. Sure wasn't expecting those blinking red squares with the skulls... :) Maybe as I die more often I'll develop some composure.

Heh I know the feeling. It's like you are all ready for a fight, red shows up and you forget what to do :(.

No.

this

i can't stress this enough

I will third that. While you can solo in EVE, it is a lot harder for a new player.

There was an entire thread of people thinking that this interview was real and that it reveals the release date on the official forums.

-_-

Great read though

Ahh sorry bout that. I missed it heh. Just did a quick glance at the first page and didn't see it.

it only seems that avast and a few others are having problems. It can't be gameguard due to that my friend can go on Phantasy Star Universe but can't go on Aion. People on the beta boards are saying that the NCSoft launcher is screwing with the gameguard and making it so certain anti-viruses won't work with the game.

I have Avast and had no issues with the beta.

then please pop over to the tech forum and explain to everyone else its NOT Gameguard, or the virus scanner,

So you explain why their beta keeps crashing

another comment worth posting....

Gameguard routinely shuts down bits of Kaspersky without my input. I've found a workaround thanks to some of the information on these boards but I'm annoyed to have to do so. If NCsoft are determined to keep Gameguard they should at least make sure it works with popular security software. Shutting down core parts of my internet security without my say so is not acceptable.

I have no idea why theirs doesn't work, and don't really care. Just saying I use Avast and never had an issue at all with Gameguard in Aion, or any other game that uses it.

you had people praising this game like it was going to be the second coming.  This should teach you a lesson, don't praise a game until you play it. You can't go by screenshots and videos.  I'm looking forward to APB, Stargate Worlds, Champions Online,  Star Trek Old Republic and Star Trek Online, but even I know these games have a good possibility of sucking....I just hope they're good.    So from now on no fighting over if you think a game is good or bad before you've played it.  This game should be able to teach everyone and keep the piece on this site.

I agree, no need to over hype a game till you play it.

Also might want to fix that part in red there.

Final Fantasy XIV and Jumpgate Evolution. I really don't have a third game lol. Nothing else otw looks really interesting to me.

I didn't see this posted so I figure I'd share it with you guys. I chuckled a bit.

Something Awful: Hi, thanks for taking the time to chat. Your e-mail was a nice surprise.

Dr. Stephen Banner: Sure thing! We're ready to go public with a few features, and I thought this would be a fun place to do it. Your articles with that old guy Cliff making fun of pictures are the best.

-----

Something Awful: Oh, no. I think you're mistaken.

Dr. Stephen Banner: That wasn't you?

-----

Something Awful: That was me. I did those. They just weren't my best. I made some photoshops of cats saying funny things like "moar" and "I can has" with motivational poster backdrops. They were the best, but they were more cerebral so not as many people spread them around.

Dr. Stephen Banner: Haha. Either way, nice to be talking to you.

-----

Something Awful: Same here. Would you mind doing a quick rundown for anyone in our audience that doesn't keep up with video game news?

Dr. Stephen Banner: Of course, yeah, let me slip into marketing mode. Star Wars: The Old Republic is a massively multiplayer RPG set in the same time period as BioWare's single player Knights Of The Old Republic games, roughly 4,000 years before the events that took place in the movies.

-----

I'm the Lead Creative Producer, which means I do a little bit of everything whie keeping each department pointed in the right direction.

Something Awful: I'm sure this gets brought up all the time, but the first Star Wars MMO, Star Wars Galaxies-

Dr. Stephen Banner: Oh boy, here we go.

-----

Something Awful: Our site had an active guild with a fully-fledged Goontown of our own, so my experience with the game was overwhelmingly positive, but obviously there were a lot of missed opportunities that kept the game from living up to its potential. What can you guys take away from the missteps of Galaxies?

Dr. Stephen Banner: Well, The Old Republic is so fundamentally different that nothing matches up 1:1 beyond the backdrop of Star Wars, and even that can't be compared because there's a gap of a few thousand years between the games.

One thing we did learn is that George Lucas had way too much influence on Galaxies. The man is brilliant, but he doesn't have much of a history with games. Many people have said that our Knights Of The Old Republic games captured the Star Wars magic more than the latest film trilogy, so I think he understands that this time around he needs to take more of a hands-off approach.

-----

Something Awful: Sounds like you guys have quite a bit of freedom.

Dr. Stephen Banner: Absolutely. One of the earliest missions for the Bounty Hunter class gives you the option of killing Darth Vader's great-grandfather, which would have mind-blowing consequences. Who would build R2-D2? Without R2-D2, how would Luke escape from the trash compactor?

We're approaching the game with story as the main focus, so it's vital that we have some breathing room to do our own thing. That's why we haven't "officially" shown the game to LucasArts or licensed the Star Wars brand yet.

-----

Something Awful: When the first screenshots of your game were released, people made a big deal out of the oversized lightsabers. What do you think about the reaction?

Dr. Stephen Banner: Look, anything you see from a project at such an early stage will be revised a million times by release. The final rendering engine wasn't in place, so naturally our art team went with stylized character models instead of "realistic" but unpolished realdolls like you see in Age Of Conan and Neverwinter Nights 2.

The criticism was doubly frustrating because lightsabers won't even be in the game.

-----

Something Awful: No lightsabers, wait. Will there be Jedi?

Dr. Stephen Banner: God no. If you give people the choice, everyone will be a Jedi. The closest class we have (and this is the exclusive that I promised you) is the Midichlorian Tinkerer, which is essentially a scientist that uses four miniature droids, each of which harnesses one aspect of what is known as the Force.

-----

Something Awful: Hold on. There are four aspects of the Force?

Dr. Stephen Banner: Yes, you have the Fire Aspect, the Water Aspect, the Good Aspect, and the Evil Aspect. The Fire Aspect allows the Tinkerer to attack enemies with a ball of fire, a "fireball" if you will. The Water Aspect is represented by an ice projectile that slows targets on impact. The Good and Evil Aspects influence dialogue.

As I've mentioned, story is the primary focus of The Old Republic, and aside from discarded hologram recordings that the player finds throughout his adventures, most of the story will be conveyed through interactions with NPCs. Our dialogue system will be unique in that the player will be able to choose from responses that are Good (giving you less tangible rewards for quests but more experience), Neutral (giving you nothing), or Evil (less experience but more items and gold). With the Midichlorian Tinkerer's Good and Evil Aspects, he will open up two additional options in every dialogue tree.

-----

Something Awful: Can he choke/push/levitate people?

Dr. Stephen Banner: No. what you're describing would fit into the Air Aspect, and at this time we have no plans to add a fifth Aspect. Perhaps in an expansion.

-----

Something Awful: Still, that class sounds really exciting!

Dr. Bruce Strange: Glad to hear it. Keeping it secret this long has been difficult, as you might imagine. I'm really anxious to get the community's positive feedback.

Of course, there are some drawbacks. With so many dialogue options - that are going to be entirely voice acted, mind you! - we've been forced to streamline the character creation process by giving every player (not just Midichlorian Tinkerers) the name Nardo Pace. Some people might not like this decision, but it clears up a lot of potential headaches.

-----

Something Awful: I'm sure there will be some negative responses out there, but really, people on the internet will bitch about anything.

Dr. Stephen Banner: Yeah, somewhere right now I'm sure someone is starting a petition. Haha. We actually have this plaque in our office that says "Petitions do not influence development, not even online petitions".

-----

Something Awful: So, when can we expect to see The Old Republic on store shelves?

Dr. Stephen Banner: The official release date for retail and digital download through Steam is December 15th, 2009.

-----

Something Awful: Thanks again for your time!

Dr. Stephen Banner: Thank you, and please consider that job offer.

Americanize it!

Anyone know if you will redo some of the sound to English/ AMEER RICIN

This needs an explanation.

And I doubt they will redo all the sounds.

I use a couple lol, for some reason they find different hings. CCleaner, Uniblue RegisteryBooster.

Calling is probably your only hope to fix your issue. Also it is the fastest way to fix it.

Actually you are guaranteed a spot in beta for the first 10,000 orders, there are 2000 spots every 2 weeks allowed into the beta.

I have a question on this. Are they adding in 2000 every 2 weeks on top of the 10,000?

If so that still does not mean you will get in. Lets say for a moment that every 2 weeks they up it by 2000. What if more people order then weeks left till release? Granted that prolly wont happen, but there is a chance. Also everyone who pre-orders should be allowed to play in every beta if they offer beta access with it. Not a first come basis.

The thing is there are only 10,000 announce preorders so once the 10,000 are gone there are no more preorders or atleast they have not hinted at there being anymore preorders which is another reason I bought it, because this means I will have the game on my computer before release so on release day I won't have to redownload the game meaning the 10,000 ppl that have preordered will be having probably either a day head start or a few hours. Also the 2000 more open slots for beta are limited to the 10,000 preorders so the way it works is on july 20 the 1 lifetime buyer, 999 LE buyers and 1000 boxed editions get in at that time than 2 weeks later the next 2000 boxed editions get in and so on so forth.

Ah ok I wasn't aware they limited it.

Anyway to stay kinda on topic. People pay $60 for console games now a days, I don;t see a big deal in $75 for an mmo. Yes I know console games don't have a monthly fee, but that goes towards keeping he servers up and new content. I will take a guess as to if this starts off decent, you will see more companies raise the initial cost.

Asking players to pay to test their Alpha game

Actually I wish more companies would allow players into their Alpha stages. They can generally find more bugs then the devs.  I would gladly pay to play in alpha stage of a game I wanted. More chances to find and fix problems. I am not sure if this game is considered in alpha stage, nor do I care. Just giving my opinion on that line.

Whats so wrong about only needing 100k players to make money? You dont need a million subs to be successful, or even a great game.

My favorite game to this day is Asheron's Call, I would hardly say that game had a ton of players. I would consider it successful and a great game.

I was bored so I did some searching, apparently its the x32 thats causing the problem. Seems Gameguard has a fix for the x64 OS, but not x32. Post I am looking at is from a week ago or so.

www.sevenforums.com/gaming/15127-gameguard-fix-gameguard-answers.html

Edit: Well I didn't read the entire thing :p. Apparently some have gotten it to work with x32 but not all.

Not sure why companies bother paying for it lol. It hardly works.
