Old news my friend.....been plenty of MMO's that have done that already....to name a few.....Rift/WoW/EQ/Eq2/Lotro/etc. They have offered trial periods where all you had to do is sub at the end of it to start playing without buying game/expansions.

Not true. Please provide evidence of said promotions or I call shenanigans!

I have been on trial accounts for Rift, WoW, and EQ2 and none of them "offered ... sub at the end to start playing without buying game/expansions."

To clarify my OP, there would NOT be an in game cash shop.

Once EQ2 and LOTRO became F2P they did drop the box price, and both technically require subscriptions if you want to play properly.

I have seen it in a few other games too, mostly promos, but some permanent.

Watch all the haters...not one of them will hate on the exploiters...

I don't see what the big deal is, it's been fixed.  It's like if people were still crying about the Rupee bug in Ocarina of Time...it's still there to this day since N64 games couldn't be updated...it was fixed in the 3DS version though hehe.

Use better English.  The word is critics not haters.  The problem has not been fixed, it has been glossed over by Cryptic.  The economy is horribly borked at the moment.

The economy on mindflayer was back to normal within 6 hours of the AH being restored. Storm in a teacup.

Its sad because its true. Then there will be a thread 'Max level in 2 days, this game sucks'.

Without the foundry the content in this game would be trivial. With the foundry, it still lacks end-game content; there is no significant tie in between the foundry and the best gear in the game yet.

You wanted us to get back to the other points you made, so I will. Have you fully geared out this TR of yours? I mean, do you have full Castle Never gear and max level enchantments?

If not, then you can't really say that it is lacking in content. There are lots of dungeons already at end game, and the next tier (Gauntlgrym) is due in a few weeks. I would hardly call this game end game light. It has way more stuff to do at end game than SWTOR had at launch. And this is looking to be padded out nicely very shortly.

As for the Foundry. I already use it to level my alts, like you have said the in-game levelling content is fairly linear. Although you can level entirely through the Foundry, PvP, skirmishes or dungeons rather than ever doing the solo quests again on an alt. This is more than most games offer.  There are a few questlines I do for the rewards (the two other bag slots) but other than that I spice it up with new Foundry quests.

Originally posted by evilastro     Speaking of ridiculous claims, two days to 60 as a casual player? Hah, only if you exploited either the quest bug or the foundry.

Well, you see there are two cases here:

Case 1: You don't understand the difference between time played in the game and number of days over which you played the game.

Case 2: You are deliberately misinterpreting something that obvious to get a nasty response out of me.

In either case, I'm not angry  :) Most people level to 60 within 3 days of playing time. People who exploited leveled to 60 in a few hours of playing time.[/quote]

Not really. In your OP it said it took you two days. You didn't clarify that you meant /played time, so it was pretty reasonable that I misinterpreted. It was a fairly misleading comment, possibly intentional.

So it took you around 48 hours of playtime to reach 60, which is a bit more reasonable.  Without exploiting you are looking at 1-2 levels per hour once you get past 20. So a casual player will probably take between two weeks and a month to hit max level.

Hi,

As the title says, I have a question related to vertical progression in NWO.

I understand that the game design is similar to most themeparks in the market, e.g. WoW. You level up relatively quickly to max level and then you are engaged in endgame.

I was wondering whether there is any other way of vertical progression of your character besides gear once you reach max level?

How long does it take to get capped in terms of vertical progression (I realize it depends on how much time you spend playing, but just some rough estimate - is it a week?a month? a year?

For me, vertical progression is an important aspect of the game which pretty much determines the longevity of an MMO, so I am trying to find out whether I should give this game a shot or not.

Thanks for any useful answers.

Like in most games, vertical progression is via items once you reach max level.

There are 3 current tiers of gear. T1, T2 and T2.5 (from Castle Never, the final dungeon in progression). The gear itself doesn't take that long to progress through. I got fully T2 in about 2 weeks. T2.5 is taking a bit longer thanks to RNG. The main grind however is in getting yourself the top tier gems / enchants.  This can take a while unless you dump money into the cash shop.  Without using the cash shop, you are probably looking at 2 months to get them all (not including if you purchase the coalescent runes from other players, which will speed it up).

The next tier of gear however is due shortly, with Gauntylgrym, which is rumoured to be like a raid. The producers letter indicated this would be another few weeks away.

Worst mmorpg's in this year?

1. Neverwinter

2. Age of Wushu

The sht what the small companies makes... Only the big fails interest!!

Please cease existence.

Neverwinter most definitely should be there.  If only from the crowd of D&D fans since that game is an abomination for those D&D fans that followed the game since launch.  Of which most don't even post on the forums anymore and how there was so much chargebacks that PWE made a statement.

The game might be a really good F2P game but for the D&D fans it is a desecration of the beloved IP.

Ironic how they made a statement that it's for D&D fans when it clearly is not and is for the generic MMO powergamer crowd.

Big DnD fan here and personally love Neverwinter. Its a far better game than DDO ever was. What works well with pen and paper doesn't always work well in a video game.

Yeah they really dropped the ball by having temporary content and deciding not to release an expansion a year later. Its a theme park, you need to be on top of new content.

GW1 had a lot more staying power for me, at least there were skills to hunt down at max level, to experiment with new builds.

GW2 is also bigger than GW:Prophecies to start with.

In terms of map size? Probably. Content wise, I disagree.

Don't make the same mistake than our friend above and confuse "content" with "content I like" ;-)

If you add up all the dynamic events of the whole world, all the hearts, the jumping puzzles, the vistas, the dungeons, all the story quest branches of all races, the sPvP, the World vs World, you realize there are very few MMORPGs which released with as much content as GW2 had at release end of last August.

For instance I'm not interested in sPvP and won't participate in it... that's content I don't really like, but I won't pretend it doesn't exist. The fact that you don't like fish doesn't mean the fish booth doesn't exist in your supermarket.

I'm not. Getting all the skills in GW1 took a lot longer than it did to see everything in this game.

A year later would be August, not now. That's 3 months away, there will be several content patches until then, and they also have plenty of time to announce something bigger to be released by the end of this year.

Yeah, but they announced there is no expansion this year already in a Dev post. I don't really see them adding enough content for me to pop in except for a few minutes of PvP here and there.

Archer ranger, scourge warlock and rune priest were data mined. So either warlock or ranger is next, since they said ranged.

And yet an old mod post said the first ranger class will be melee based.  Putting out two ranged DPS classes is retarded,  A melee and a ranged is much more sound and the Scourge Warlock has been confirmed so that's one ranged class.

Data mined done mean crap really since the stuff was accidently leaked out and that's not to say that no all the classes they are working one had their gear leaked out.

Also Andy used the word "class" as in singular so if it is only one class they you can bet that it will be the Scourge Warlock as that's the closest class being completed and that they've talked about.

Putting two dual wield classes instead of a bow class would be retarded. Besides, the datamining actually indicated that it was Archer Ranger. Which is the more requested ranger unsurprisingly.

He didnt say ranged, he said "ranged". Entirely different.

While it seems to be hinting at ranger, Warlock was the more complete class. Stuff for warlock was dropping during closed beta.

Just read this, its pretty long, but it covers a lot of stuff - what has been happening since launch, immediate plans for the future, long term plans.

http://nw.perfectworld.com/news/?p=896631

Lots of cool info, including that Gauntylgrym is due in a few weeks, and that a new class and paragon paths aren't far off on the horizon.

It was nice to see how candid they were about the issues they were having. Also looks like they are planning to drop the Open Beta tag in the not so distant future.

Took me around 2 days to hit 60 with a TR (I know, I'm terrible). I can't say that rushed...really.. All I did was play through the base quest content casually and do a few foundries for the daily ADs.

Without the foundry the content in this game would be trivial. With the foundry, it still lacks end-game content; there is no significant tie in between the foundry and the best gear in the game yet.

I think it behooves cryptic to let the player base design the end-game dungeons with moderated content (to ensure no more "ogre push" exploits).

Foundry quests are definitely sort of the novelty factor to this game, but once you hit 60 they just become a daily chore for AD as you get no other reward (once you're in level 60 greens).

I'm not going to make any ridiculous claims like the population is taking a nose dive, but you can see different metrics that indicate the standard down trend for a newly released MMO and unlike many MMOs this games leveling curve is almost a straight line.

There are no alternate quest paths, no different starting areas, few classes (they are obviously in the process of adding more, but the same content is the same content at the end of the day) and very trivial character progression.

They could make leveling a lot harder, sort of forcing you into the foundry, which wouldn't be that bad of an idea, or they could tie in the foundry better with end-game content.

Speaking of ridiculous claims, two days to 60 as a casual player? Hah, only if you exploited either the quest bug or the foundry.

A free to play hate post, this is both new and interesting.
Definitely not ready.
For the record, currency exchange is back to pre-exploit levels already. So much for the train wreck.
Game is still jam packed. Only people who never liked the game in the first place are jumping up and down about the exploits and the response to them. You guys have been predicting doom and gloom for cash shops since inception. Its never going to happen.
