He's probably not even going to be the person with the most hours played next week :P

Good luck to him with the fundraising.

I second Dragon Nest.  Started it a week and a half ago and it's pretty entertaining.

Only a few problems:  gold spammers, occasional lag, and storage seems really limited until you know what is safe to throw away.

So I got an ally code and download the beta launcher from the website and just get this error.(1016)

I am running the launcher as admin.  Don't see any other threads with this issue.  Anyone have a clue for me?

Thanks.

Sorry OP...I think you either expect way too much immediately for free or you have a misunderstanding of what's really important in LotRO.  Either way I'll clarify a few things for you.

Destiny Points...they're next to useless up until max level for raiding.  All they get you are short duration temporary buffs, such as +run speed, +rest xp, +health/power etc. etc. and since the game is sooo easy most players don't even need or use them while leveling.  So, they defenitely aren't a necessity.

As for limitations on the number of quests you can have at any one time, guess what?  All players, even subscribers, have that limitation.  But guess what again?  Just by leveling that limit gets increased.  I think you start a new character off with a limit of 20 quests at a time, then for every 10 levels you gain you get another +5 added to the limit until you hit the max of 40 quests by like level 40 (if I recall all the numbers correctly).  If you're not happy with that then that is NOT a fault of the free-play model but rather a fault of the game's design itself.

The 3/5 bags thing I can agree with.  There really is too much filling your bags in LotRO but they're working on reducing all the inventory junk.  And, as for unlocking those 2 final bags, it's an account unlock.  Once you unlock them they're unlocked permanently for ALL your characters.

And now, most importantly, you totally neglected to mention anything about being able to earn FREE store points just by playing the game.  What this means, for anyone unfamiliar with the system, is that all these limitations can be removed relatively easily for free...all you gotta do is play the game.  Granted it will take some time and you gotta have patience but it's doable.  There were already posts by free players over the last couple months who've unlocked all content and limitations for free, who basically have a lifetime account now, and free-play has only been out 6 months now.  In fact I think that may be why LotRO has more limitations then DDO does...it's sooo much easier to earn free points in LotRO than in DDO.

If you want free and immediate access to everything right now all within your first month of playing...yeah, it's not gonna happen.  But if you enjoy the game and plan on playing it for the next year or more (long way to go, still, before we get to Mordor) then you can easily do it for free, inconvenient as some of it may be for the first couple months.

One final comment about the statement of level 20 being DDO's biggest flaw...That is NOT a flaw of DDO...it's a flaw of the actual D&D game since DDO is based on D&D.  It's like saying DC Universe Online's biggest flaw is that it's got superheroes in it.

^

Everyone knows that none of the f2p games are free, but  I think this is probably the most affordable one and isn't nearly as much pay 2 win as most other f2p's.  You actually earn a lot of TP if you just play the game and do deeds, which you should anyway to advance your characters traits.

It is recommended to spend at least $5 for points to make your account 'premium' which raises your gold limit, unlocks more character slots, and I believe gives more access to the auction hall/trading.

There are also 'shortcuts' you can take if you want to unlock things for your characters without spending a 'ton' of money. For example, if you subscribe for only one month and create your 5 characters and log in, all of them will retain the 5 bags, fully unlocked traits, and removed gold limit as well as you getting 500 tp for the months sub.

Its not the areas that keep me from the game. Its the terrible combat and how utterly boring it is.

QFT.  If not for the crappy combat, this would be my favorite go-to game, hands down.  I like that they're revisiting Evendim - it's a cool zone that few people travelled to.  But, I need a combat revamp ASAP!!  I can't motivate myself back into this game to fight one more battle...

Did you try it since mirkwood and the combat revamp? Still not flashy, but the combat isn't really delayed anymore.

Sounds more like COD than an MMO.

I would like more games that provide ever growing ways to advance your character, even if at a diminished rate or in different areas...and not just through gear.

If i start a quest or deed while on VIP, can i finish it when I'm premium and still get TP?  (i.e. does the restriction block the starting or the completion or both?)

The deeds stay, I believe.  Though obviously, the ## quests completed deeds will be worthless til' you buy the pack.  I believe the Slayer/exploration deeds are still available for all zones you can physically get to.  Could be wrong.

The quests, I dunno if you can finish 'em or not.

You can't start deeds for zones which you haven't bought the quest pack for.  I was planning on just not buying the packs and grinding deeds/rep/skirms until moria until I tried and found that out.

Anyway, if he plays the month and enjoy it he'll probably sub anyway ;)

Just remember you can't have swift travel or PVMP even if you buy everything.

You can do PVMP you just can not play as a monster character.

Have you tried it?   I know I read it that way the first time as well, but later read that you can't participate on either side.

...is so epic.

First time going through it and it's just amazing.  Turbine did a really awesome job with the environments in this game.

Just remember you can't have swift travel or PVMP even if you buy everything.

People are also reporting general better performance with less lag.

If only that were so.

i'm actually concerned about how the PS3 version will play in March, they need to do a lot of work... relying on vista sp 2 or xp sp 3 (as the graphical usage isn't that high)... is rather different especially with MMORPGs forcing the old "as many can play as possible"... i mean i play RUSE better on SP1 for vista than SP2 [doesn't like my desktop like it does my laptop], and it looks a lot better than the PS3 version ;) (although the console version is just awful, but it's an RTS what did you expect!? lol)

They may end up shooting themselves in the AoC foot as it were ;)

still early days.... -munches popcorn-

I'd wager it's gonna be 720p. Only :)
Are you overclocking it?

Lawl

There isn't any content in the beta save guildleves...

The official patcher isn't that bad if you open the appropriate ports.  I've been using a 360 controller and the regular patcher and been doing fine.

I used motioninjoy and it was just too problematic for me.

Probably cutscene videos and maybe voice acting... I dunno if it'll have any more story stuff and they've left it out not to spoil it for beta players. Maybe good chunks of the game just aren't in yet... which would be worrying if no one is testing them. In EQ2 beta developers would ask for people who want high level characters to test that stuff out.

You're missing several areas, the mog house zones in each city; by the way they are existent. Each city has a teleport zone that doesn't let you teleport into it; it's blocked off during OB. These would be your mog home zones (lily hills, 3rd floor of Ul'dah castle). You are also missing apparently some aesthetic options for characters, chocobo riding, and possibly several class options as well. Not to mention recipes and armor that are missing in OB.

Hehe you talking about all the things they are saving for surprise effect excites me. Alhough they might test it soon? in the OB? a little before release? So they can add any corrections to the patch.

Read the beat manual it hints alot at how much is not available in Beta. I quote "A fraction of the content"

I would like to preface this by saying i'm a Final Fantasy Fan and I'm enjoying Beta and am going tomorrow to preorder the CE but would also like to point out this quote says absolutely nothing about how much content is in beta. Guess what 1/4(25%) of the content is a fraction of the content, 1/2(50%) of the content is a fraction of the content 9/10(90%) of the content is a fraction of the content.....you get the picture.

Depends which definition you use :)

It can also mean "a very small part or segment of anything"

I think people have a right to complain about some off the things, even if they played ffxi.  The question is whether or not they 'cancelled their preorder', and it doesn't seem like many ffxi players have.

Kinda getting tired  of it honestly.  Can't wait until the 22nd and find out for myself.

Anyone else pre-order from Best Buy?

I'm getting the CE, and I'm just curious if anyone knows when they're shipping out codes for early access.

I would personally recommend getting your money and setting it on fire, it will yield more enjoyment.

I have a few thoughts on where you can stick your money :)

Well, looks like this is brand new...maybe they are planning on enabling it in the game but they aren't ready to push it out yet:?

The MMO community is sick of nothing but shit coming out since November 23, 2004. That's all we've been getting ever since.

Whatever, i sure as hell enjoyed the lag disconnects and hour wait times to get back on the wow servers trying to raid blackwing lair.  I guess nobody remembers that kind of shit.

I don't think there has ever been a 'clean' mmo launch, and the issue above was like a year after launch.
