Not sure I get this complaint about how SWTOR is of the same mold as WoW/etc. It's a MMORPG. They're made from the MMORPG mold. If you do not like MMORPG's, then you will not like this game. "Sidequests similar to other MMO'S"... Of COURSE they are similar. How do you make them different? That's like asking for first person shooter action in a text based game. Aside from the graphical improvements, these MMORPG's are based on the old MUD's of the early 1990's. Even "eve" is fairly standard faire when you realize your SHIP is your character. Everyone looks alike, the quests are routine, yadda yadda yadda. All that doesn't matter. At the end of the day, its whether people find the game FUN to play. I found SWTOR to be fun to play.

So, all you people who complain about this game being a clone of the others, please describe your perfect MMORPG and how you would make it "Different".

Appearance tab solves the problem without having to worry about balance, design, recipes, crafting, etc etc. Simple solution to a simple problem. But Bioware for some reason is wanting a complex (and apparently, difficult to work and balance) solution to a simple problem.

Crafters are desired, whether there's an appearance tab or not: they still make the gear and the mods etc. But that isn't required for the LOOK the person wants. Stats are always desired.

But this system does not have really downsides, it's just a system that requires you to do a little work for your desired look. While a-tab is the cheap way where you simply just *boom* look whatever you wish, it's un-immersive and does not have a positive impact on economy and socializing like modding does.

Modding is basically also more content in the game, when you have to do some work with it, while a-tab again is something that just takes 2 seconds to select appearance.

I understand that a-tab is the best choise for anyone who simply just wants to choose their appearance and that's it, but modding seems a lot more healthy way for the game and fun way to choose your appearance considering everything.

This system does have downsides, as explained in the post itself.  What's "un-immersive" is being able to take "parts" of an item, slap them on another whole item and make that item the old item, except in looks...

The appearance tab IS a "cheap" way to do it. It's also "The best way" to do it. Why make people fumble around with mods at all? Just have them wear the gear that has the stats they like on one tab, and the looks they like on the other. Presto! It's how every other game out there does it, and they do it that way because its the best way to do this simple task!

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. But Bioware is for some strange reason.

The reason people hate on this game and wish for it's failure, is because they fear that it will overshadow and take players away from their games of choice. They will say that they are not afraid or feel threaten by TOR, but yet they feel the need to come to every TOR thread and bash the game at every chance that they get. While sprouting out how good there game is or how good it is going to be. I mostly see this behavior from the GW2 fans and the sandbox fans, probably the largest group in MMO history is following TOR and not the other games and these people seem to feel butthurt by that.

I don't wish for it's failure, I just wish it had been a better game period. I think it'll do moderately well in the market place, but don't believe they took enough risks or did anything interesting other than add a sci-fi skin to the fantasy formula and it's a disappointment.

Course, I've been doing this since M59, LoK, and NWN (not the pc game, the one on aol) and I'm just getting pretty jaded on the "formula" these days. I want to see the industry grow by leaps and bounds not centimeters... and variety is the spice of life. Shrug.

When you come up with your revolutionary idea for making a "new" MMORPG that isn't like all the rest, let me know... I might invest.

Of course, most things don't grow by leaps and bounds anymore. Look at cars. Still 4 wheels and an engine... Do we whine that the new model year's car isn't flyable? No. We accept the small increments because if a car could fly, it'd be a plane...

I seriously doubt the game will have that many subscribers. It'll sell a lot of boxes, sure, but subs... mmm... no.

Imo they'd do beter if they went B2P ANet style. They'd sell waay more boxes that way and retention rates be damned. Well it's just plain unrealistic greed on some publishers' part and they'll suffer financially for it. I'm not saying that the game is bad, far for it. It's just that its structure and what it's all about is better suited for a box-sales-with-expansions model.

Just imagine, if EA announced today that they are giving FREE LIFETIME SUBS to everyone you'd have 2x 3x more box sales. (do notice my cunning marketing pitch :) ) Considering that each box price = 4 months of subs... Do the math. They would need to have really high retention rates to justify such a loss in box sales.

But as I said, greed might be their downfall.

(i copied this from another thread which is prbbly going to get locked for redundancy soon)

If they got the whole $60, you might have a point. But they don't (on retail box sales). The merchant is taking half of it right there, so basically, its $30 per box.... then EA takes its bite for being the distributor (at least in NA), and then the Bioware division makes its $5-10 per box...

The accountants wouldn't be to keen on giving "free lifetime subs" then.

Wait, this is a game-breaker? Isn't every MMO like this? Except they don't have "mirrored" classes, they have the SAME classes for each faction.

Exactly...lol people find so much to complain about. If it was the opposite people will be complaining how it is not balanced lmao.

Not EVERY MMo is like this. And the ones NOT having mirrored classes are the ones less popular *sadly* best example of a good MMO without mirrored classes (and thus very unbalanced classes) is Lineage II, and so far I've never heard anyone complain about the unbalance the game has...

Macro's aren't usually coded to complain ;)

EQ2 is polished. SWTOR still  has some rough edges (graphical bugs, etc)....

But to compare the two is silly. One has been out for years. One is still in beta. And those kinds of problems are fixable, and quickly.

The main question is: Is it fun? I had a blast both of my weekends. It wasn't the "Same ol' same ol'" to me, and I've played every western MMO out there except for UO. Sure, it has a lot in common with the rest, why shouldn't it? Quests, items, achievements, levels... smells like.... AN RPG! Wow!

And there really won't be anything new under the sun for MMORPGs. What's left to do?  First Person shooters are the same "rut" since Quake 1 if you use this logic.

And the classless rant again. Sigh. Skyrim doesn't have classes. Yet I've managed to make a thief, a mage, and a warrior! I also made a thief/mage/warrior multiclass! Yet it doesn't have classes.... every game has classes, even the classless ones, its delusional to think otherwise.

SWTOR isn't DIKU based. DIKU was the worst of the MUD OS's anyways. Silly stamina and "You must rest because you've moved 20 rooms!" junk. I hated the eating and drinking being required.

lpmud and MudOS were far superior.

Anyways, SWTOR isn't anything like any of those anyways, except perhaps in the most basic/general ways (they both run on computers, etc).

I enjoyed it during the 2nd weekend test they had. I can't wait for release. I'm happy that I'm not in the general beta as I don't want the game to get "old" before it's even released :).

I really enjoyed my Sith Inquisitor/Assassin.

I almost enjoyed the Imperial Agent as much as the Inquisitor (it started off a bit rocky compared to the Sith).

The Trooper was fun, but not my cup of tea, though I did enjoy the Mortar strikes etc, big guns are fun.

And I barely played the Jedi Consular which is basically the same class as Sith Inquisitor, just the light side version of it, the powers were the "same" (Graphically different, but same effects).

Loading times when you either died or ported back home were the biggest issue I had. My character would load in first, then the world would populate around them. Made it appear you were standing on sky. This only lasted a few seconds, but it seemed like it needed some work. I do wish the speeder would come at level 15 instead of level 25 ;). Walking around some of those big planets after a few times on the same path got old, but then, I was in a hurry ;).

My Lydia sits in my house in Winterrun or whatever town it is... I figured out quickly that companions suck. They even give you a lesson in this right off the bat when you have to follow the guy out of the town you're about to be beheaded in. So, when I got Lydia, I told her to stay inside my house. And she does. :D

Occupy Ealdwick Park not doing so well after the Filth started cropping up, making the protestors mindless zombies... ;)

I work for a credit card processor, and if the company Origin/EA uses doesn't have banks in the countries ya'll are in, they may block. We do. We can do US $, Canadian $, and UK Pounds.... we don't (yet) do the euro's because we don't have a bank (yet) that does euros. We block all of the world except the USA/Canada/UK and selected specific IP's (Some Australian, etc).

So it may be that Origin can't accept your credit card, and would rather block you up front than give you a nice "DECLINED 005" message at the end of it, making you think your card has been rejected for some nefarious reason...

That's one possible answer :)

Needed to add this to the video... keeping it "real to the game".

Rare resources only in a PvP area.... same ol tired ploy to get PvEers to be fodder for the PvPers. I suppose with the Mythic meatheads designing it, they thought it was a great idea.

Wonder if the noobhammer is making a comeback...

I have no problem with free trials and demos. That's basically the "F2P" system. Insert hook, reel in. No problem. But call a spade a spade. There are a few exceptions like LOL, which I will be amazed to see it keep the cash shop to cosmetic items only (though I have a friend who buys stuff there (at about 15 bucks a month, amazingly, to help support Riot games).

But a game like World of Tanks... I wanted to grind up to the big bad tanks, and then I realized I'd spent 300 bucks in 3 months on in game gold. While I enjoyed my time in the game for the most part, it wasn't worth 300 bucks in 3 months. I'll never buy gold from wargaming.net again, not because I hate them, but because I don't support their model. I'd be happy to give 10 bucks a month to the game to support it. But gimping me because I don't (xp and credits nerfs make it extremely difficult to play the bigger tanks unless you're a "premium" account person) sucks.

Get to the choppahhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh wait, wrong movie.

My problem:

1) Game developer wants to make money to pay bills, feed themselves, and maybe make another game to do the same over again.

2) Game is free to play with a stated "all carrot, no stick" policy (aka no pay2win).

How do we reconcile this?

Looks like a guass rifle in some games I play.

The game will do well . But those expecting SWG 2.0 will venture away after a month. I will be playing it for longer than that barring any severe bugs

I hope no one wants SWG 2.0. That game's release was a nightmare. It's NDA wasn't dropped until a couple of days before release, so the beta testers had very little time to get the warning out that the game was an unfihished mess. People say the NGE ruined it. There was nothing to ruin. It was born dead. Empty worlds with random spawn points of random creatures. Missing professions. Macroing to "level", endorsed by the developers.

Blech.
