Never fear, this is a SOE title, so there's a good chance you'll soon be able to use real cash to BUY the gear you need to succeed at DCUO. |

Economy is loot-card driven. So if you want to be able to buy all that gear that is required to play the game (unless you're on Starsider... you're playing solo), be prepared to start shelling out real cash via SWG TCG for a chance at loot cards worth selling in-game. |

Nice article/musing. Here's where I geek out a bit. While it's been ages since I read 'Shadows Of The Empire" (great book btw) I recall there being some sort of personal risk to Luke while he was baking the crystal. And that it was implied that it was quite a sense of accomplishment when it was fully completed. Vader even remarked "Indeed you ARE powerful!" as he fired up his captured son's lightasber and saw the green blade in Return Of The Jedi. It would be cool to see a mechanic whereas that Lightsaber, the one the player creates for themselves, is actually something to be proud of. It always kinda irked me in SWG how players were always encouraged to 'gear up' to better lightsabers, which I always found rather lore breaking (of course... what ISN'T lore breaking in SWG?). As is the trend these days, to be constantly rotating gear in MMO's perhaps it would be best if TOR's lightsabers were 100% reward/looted until end game, when at that time they would finally create that one blade that could be 'your life'. |

Sadly, I went with WoW. Even though WoW is not exactly known for it's innovation, I'm gonna say it has the one feature that is so rare and innovative it make me angry... IT'S NOT BROKEN. Go figure. the most successful MMO in existence is also the most complete/functional/polished. CRAZY THOUGHT. Now if some other developers would start to rip off that 'feature', MMO's could really start to take off. |

Originally posted by abyss404 While I don't know if I'd put it that way... I agree with the sentiment in principle. It's cool that the world isn't always under our control, and that there's events out there that affect players whether they like it or not. Just wait till Deathwing comes and starts ganking everyone in random zones. Looking forward to that (seriously). |

Do you think Bioware&EA are upset about all this negativity?
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 11/01/10 8:45:53 AM
Originally posted by jaxsundane I can't speak for LOTRO's community as I don't play that one, but I certainly agree with you about your concern about TORs community. There are many advertised features in TOR that I am not exactly pumped about (ie:tunnel shooter) but am willing to wait until I play it before I cast my last judgement... but the community seriously has me concerned. So far they're getting a failing grade in my book. (and in my book, MMO's are all about community) Maybe I'll have to check out LOTRO. |

Some Positive Feedback gathered in one spot
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 10/28/10 3:22:13 PM
Let the speculators speculate. Let BioWare market their game. They certainly don't need a rabid fanboi out there bashing people for 'misinformation'. That's only damaging the 'cause'. Like I said in another thread, I'm not sold on what BioWare has delivered as far as information of the game, but I can reserve my judgement for when they really start to market the game. The one thing that has me quite concerned about TOR at this moment is the rabid overzealous community and it's inability to handle alternative points of view. Let the trollers troll. It's not your job to refute them. (and if they're being douchy about it, they just end up looking like douches) |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Two Years and Counting
News Discussion « General Discussion 10/27/10 3:12:43 PM
Two things have really quenched the fires I was originally feeling towards this game. 1) The vastness and worldliness I associate with MMO's (not necessarily 'sandbox' MMO's either) just doesn't seem to be represented in the info they have given us. Yeah, there's a buttload of planets, but the zones they've shown us seem very small and directed. Of course, I'll save my final judgement in this regard for when I can play it for myself, but I do think if the zones are in fact big, they REALLY need to be showing it soon.
2) The community for this game is insane. And not in a good way. It's not at all like I was hoping. Originally when TOR was announced I was extremely excited. I was excited because I'm a SWG vet (Oh no he di'nt... Oh yes he did). I was excited not because I expect TOR to be a sandbox, not because I want 32 mix and match professions, not because I want a player driven economy, and not because I want awesome JTL space gameplay (well, that one is still a sore spot...). As a SWG vet, I was excited about TOR because of the community. The community in pre-CU SWG was amazing. It's what SWG was all about for me. It was a 24/7 SW fanfest. It's the core of what the NGE destroyed. When they launched the TOR forums, I excitedly read the new forum member names and recognized many names I had not seen in years. Now, the few times I read the forums (official, and here @ mmorpg.com), those names are gone, and all I read is trolling and flaming, and crucifying anyone who doesn't utterly worship BioWare (and anyone who says "pre-CU"). I'm not totally blaming the community for it's own behavior. We're a passionate market us MMO gamers. Lack of info creates a vacuum in which we let our minds and opinions wander. Which can and does create friction.
In summary: Game = Meh Community = Fail Fail + Meh = not quite as excited about this games as BioWare would want me to be. |

If anything at all, the one aspect of MMO's I sincerely hope TOR will change, is the 'get rich quick' mentality greedy publishers have been approaching our genre with since WoW hit without thinking about WHY WoW has been popular. I hope it will be a wake up call to the publishers regarding the quality of the games they've been releasing. With all the WoW Clones out there, the one thing about WoW that nobody has bothered to try to 'clone' is quality. In that regard, I certainly hope hope EA/BioWare manages to 'clone' WoW. |
