What are you talking about, having the currency pegged to the USD does not mean paying cash "out of the ass" for everything. You can certainly play it that way just blow cash on the game, but you dont have to, and most dont. Get a clue.

You can buy a store, you can buy a mall and rent out the stores inside, you can organze your store however you want with different layouts and furnitures, you can own land then buy/find different DNA to create creatures to put in your area for other players to hunt, you can become a beautician, you can craft most anything in the game, you can fly a spaceship, you can literally do whatever you want. You gain skill by doing it, there are no artifical level or caps. Dont listen to all those wow idiots, EU is a completely different game, it is an adult game and takes more than just leet fast finger skillz and trash talk to succeed. Yes it takes money to play for some professions and the end game is very expensive. But that's the whole point of a sand box mmorpg, otherwise everyone would be right on the top tier doing the same thing. There are so many different paths in the game once you get pass the initial learning curve, it's really up to you. What most of those newbies are whining here is going down the path of a strict hunter(killing monsters). Of course if you played the entire game as a hunter, you are playing against the developer. Mining and hunting, you are trying to get developer to give you money (in the form of mob loot/ores). OBVIOUSLY they will not give you more than you invested in the game. This is not (*#*(@ wow where you can farm 100000 gold a day and every item in the game is in 6 figures after a few months. Even if you play a hunter, if you play efficiently and do your research, you still dont need a lot of money, about the same as a monthly subscription. But the meat of the game is not as a hunter, here's a giant hint for your morons, you make money in the game by playing a profession that makes money FROM PLAYERS NOT MINDARK. Of course some players love to hunt and dont mind paying a bit money each month, which is perfectly fine too. The only downside of the game right now is the graphics are a bit outdated so it doesnt look that nice, once the game gets facelift from crytek2 probably by next year realistically, it will be truely perfect. I love the idea of putting a real dollar vaue to the in game currency, everyone takes the game much more seriously and the quality of people playing the game is also much different than your "i ownz j00" high school crowds in wow.

This is probably one of the best reviews i read, expressing the current sad state of linear fetch quest mmorpgs pioneered by blizzard. Unfortunately based on all the replies from the wow-era players, most dont have a clue what the author was even talking about. It's really sad the current state of mmorpgs, once the developers see the success of WoW, every single mmorpg since then is a copycat of the quest driven linear progression model of wow. But it's only a great system the first time you play it (part of the reason why wow was so popular). You basically going through the soulless game quest after quest like a zombie, until maxed out in a few months, then just sit around doing raid/pvp until the expansion or quit from boredom. There is nothing on the horizon that suggest any change either, the next big thing warhammer looks to be exactly the same type of game with a better pvp/raid system at the endgame. Is it too much to ask just to have 1 free world sandbox mmorpg for the old players who desire long term character development and progression over instant gratification?

By the time they fixed the game to a stable state about a year late, the server was pretty much empty. The only highlight of that mess was one of the AO staff promised to shave his head bald if the game didnt have a stable launcy, needless to say he was bald like 2 mins after the launch lol.... AoC looks to be a repeat...i will wait for all the fanboy crying after the production release to decide whether or not it's worth it. |

thanks guys, a couple more questions, i just started playing. 1)Just to confirm, the only hack/cheats are bots and gold seller spams? For example noone is using speedhacks or any of those that will affect the actual gameplay? 2) Also i understand as part of the premium service you get to somehow hit a dummy and gaine exp. So does that mean, those that paid the service can legally use a bot to hit the dummies? I always a bunch of people outside of town hitting the dummies nonstop. They have to be bots right? i mean who would want to sit there and hit the dummies for hours! |

Got burned by so many of those free to play item shop korean games. But this one looks interesting, can the current players tell me honestly the bot/cheat/hack situation in this game? Also any issues with account getting wiped, losing items, etc..due to server problems? thanks |

Man it's never about making money, but having a fun game experience. I think these type of game / economic model is great, especially for someone tired of all the disney-hold-your-hand mmorpgs (started by wow) For one, there is no selling currency on the blackmarket and rampant inflation / collapse of market prices that's associated with almost every single mmorpg. It's REAL money, people take it much more seriously vs buying 1000k gold for 10 bucks online. Also related, as the entire game is based on real money. People tend to play the game much more seriously, resulting in a better game experience for everyone. The only thing is i just cant stand the graphic, it's just terrible like putting salt in my eyes. Will definitly check it out once they have the new engine. |

it will be starcraft done ala planetside style but with better graphics, more bells & whistles, and a lot more fun. It will suck all the fps / starcraft gamers in, make gazallions of dollar, and replacing wow as the next mmo everyone loves to hate. |

Now that NDA is lifted... I dont know why they even bother to have levels, getting 1 to 50 is like playing a single player game and takes minimum effort. The devs took WoW's easy mode design even one step further, if that's possible. Basically there is absoutely no character development, everything that comes with a good mmorpg such as grouping, fighting in dungeons (or sea/ships in this case), while gaining exp and develop your characters/ships are not there. You go from 1 to 50 solo, then just go around pvping almost like you do playing counterstrike... This wouldnt be so bad if the ship to ship combat has good physics and design (as one would expect from those beautiful screenshots). But instead think of it as a fancy version of earth&beyond combat for those that still remember - aka the same wack a mole, but using ships. Anyway to summarize, get 1 to 50 in no time, then play the game like a pvp map, just kill each other, flipping port.. or do mind numbing farms to get better ships. The current streak of mmorpg lemon continues. I actually find myself going back to playing FFXI, just to be challenged and remember some of the glorious days where there is no freaking easy mode or spoonfeeding. Yes i am playing a 4 year old game, that's how sad the current state of mmorpgs are... ----------- edit: some good things about potbs: - graphics are nice, especially the water and ships. I have 8800gts 640mb and had no problem running in max setting, framerates were good even in port battles. - game is stable, tjhink of it as LOTRO beta stable, which is very good.

that's simply not true, look at the top 10 current article on mmorpg.com i can identify 3 right off the bat: everquest, lineage2, eve online - all are old games. It's because all those games pay mmorpg.com advertising money. So they get coverage.

i dont need some numbers to tell me the server population, can see with my own eyes. On asura server, the server population is very healthy. Every single zone i levelled in so far from 1 to 30 are filled with players at all hours of day. Just run around the map, you can see groups camped out all over the place killing monsters. In cities also there are tons of people running around doing their thing, jeuno is very crowded. When i first started, was very surprised to see how healthy the game is, with players of all levels everywhere. This is especially good because the game is 4 years old which means it proved to have the mojo to keep the players. Unlike other new mmorpgs where the population was good for the first few months then the whole server becomes a ghost town. Give the game a try, after the first week of getting over the console-style control, you will find a very deep and well done mmorpg unlike any other!

NOTE: make sure you select decimal instead of hex before entering the values for above step 3 & 4. Above fix assumes you have a relatively decent video card to support the high resolution. FFXI has probably one of the WORST registration process and GUI/control layout for a PC mmorpg...ever. But once you cut down this thick layer of frustration and get used to it, you will discover a very deep, rich and involving mmorpg that's leagues beyond the current mindless zombie wow-clones out there. Good luck and feel free to shoot me a tell if need help. I am on asura, name is gagaliya. |

found a copy of the dvd at target, of all places... wow the ffxi registration process is one of the most frustrating online experience ever. Jesus christ you would think you are trying to join the secret service. I think i must accepted at least 10 term of service agreements and typed in my name address 3 times....the damn thing still wont let me play. Now it's forcing me to take a survey, that's like another 3 pages to fill out #*)(@&#(*@&#(@*&!!!!! anyway i will be on asuya as gagaliya if they ever let me play, if you see a wimpy looking taru taru whitemage running around getting killed, that would be me ! |

Hi after some thought, i decided EQ2 is not for me. It seems you can still max out pretty easily. I have decided to try FFXI instead with its unique leveling/job system that allows continued character development. thank you all and sorry this thread turned into another vanguard vs eq2 debate. |
