UE4 looks like a great engine... and the price and the fact that you get the complete Source Code for it makes it even better. However it runs like crap on older hardware. I have a mid-range Gaming PC from 2012. Not the greatest machine but certainly not the worst. UE4 kept crashing my PC every few minutes. Certainly not the greatest working environment for trying to develop a Game! For MMOs to be sustainable you also want to be able to target the largest amount of players possible. The higher your System Requirements the lower that potential Player base becomes.

Be specific.  What are you referring to exactly?

Designing and coding takes too much time and money to do this in todays market. Until the tools are so easy to use that you could hugely cut the development time this just is not going to happen. Also if we reached that point a new bar would be set, one all would then have to follow, so the issue may arise again.

I really don't see your logic here... As a Game Developer my self world Size doesn't really mean more Programming... You program a single Zone Server that can then serve any zone in the world... It's not like you have to program a Zone Server for each Zone in your world... With the right technology going into your game your world can be as large as you want it to be. It comes down to Server hardware to host the zones on which takes money... The more going on in your zones the better hardware is needed... the better the hardware needed the more money it's going to cost.

Because if they knew any better they would be working in a big company by now

umm... then why are there documented cases of Industry vets leaving AAA Companies so they can become Indies? Working for a Company you have backers breathing down your back telling you exactly how to do your job. You have no freedom to be creative because it's all about the money and how your backers can get the most Return on their investment. As a Indie you have the freedom to be creative and work on the Projects you care about.

Actually until Computers are created with no limits on Poly count and triangles that can be rendered at one time with acceptable Frame rates MMOs will always be behind single player games graphically. There's a huge difference between Single player games where you have a single player character and a hand full of AI Controlled Characters being rendered at once and a MMO where you could have potentially hundreds of player Characters being rendered at once, plus AI controlled characters, plus the environment.

Also the older the hardware that is supported the larger the potential player base can be so Developers would rather have stylistic Graphics which age well and allow for a larger potential Player base then have ultra realistic Graphics which takes a super computer to run.

Seems like most are always needing more funding, and pretty much all of them are at least a year behind where they originally projected being by now.

Personally I've made the personal decision that I threw away all the money I spent on kickstarter to con men and scammers.

I've decided crowd funding is nothing but a criminal enterprise most likely originally designed to launder money.

Any legitimate and solid business model does not have to come begging funding from the consumers.

If you have a solid and workable business model there are tons of banks and investors out there looking to make an investment or business loan. If the business model is too weak or non-existent, the managers are clueless, or have zero business experience then it ends up begging for " free " crowdfunding.

If there developers were even remotely legitimate they would be offering an investors return on our money rather that a T-shirt or in game decal.

That's a fairly naive view of the business world Nowadays just about every major breakthrough and tech company started by getting funding from someone. Whether friends and family, venture capitalists, or crowd funding.

There have been numerous successes, and several products that have been brought to market. And there are products that did not make it. That isn't because the persons that ran these ventures were con men.

Something like an MMO is an extremely difficult product to develop and bring to market by a non-professional team of many persons. So it's going to be an uphill climb from the very beginning, regardless of how wonderful the ideas and concepts are.

If you have ever taken the time and the risk to start a company with an idea you would perhaps understand. My thinking is that you have never done this, and speak from a position of ignorance on the subject.

Without crowdfunding, many projects would never get far enough to attract Venture Capitalist investors, and certainly never far enough to secure a loan.

If the prospect of paying money for the development of something you want, and have that be brought to market, is a concept that you aren't comfortable with, then say so. A t-shirt, special mention, etc. aren't the reason you are paying a mere 10 or 15 usd. It is to get the finished product, eventually, which otherwise would never get made.

Don't crap on the people who have the passion and drive to try to make their own dreams a reality, and disparage them by labelling them all as con men.

I have actually written close to 30 separate and unique business plans.

Taken 17 of them to presentation.

Of the 17 I have presented to banks and investors, only 4 received funding. Of those 4, two failed within the first year.

The third went under within 5 years, and the fourth has now been in business for 11 years with some success.

I know exactly what I am talking about.

Business is tough, its risky, and there are tons of failures for every success as there should be.

When you remove the risk/reward aspect of business, you end up with a pile of shit where weak, mismanaged, undisciplined, idiots are running companies and saturating a market with craptastic ideas that only make it harder for real companies with real experience to produce real solid projects.

But this is the entitled generation where a bunch of young people think everyone should be given everything they want even if they have not earned it, and do not deserve it.

A generation too stupid to realize that by taking away winners and losers, by making it so the weak survive, all they are doing is making everyone else themselves included weaker.

I do not manage my business because I am not qualified to manage a business.

I do not do the accounting for my business because I am not qualified to do the books for a business.

Unlike these kickstarts I run a real business where I hire qualified people to do a  job they are trained to do.

Unlike a kickstart I have a real payroll account, with a real bank, and pay my people with real money.

Unlike a kickstart I have accountability to my lender and to my employees.

Unlike a kickstart I keep exact books, and pay the taxes I owe in a timely manner.

Unlike a kickstart if I produce crap I do not get paid.

Amazes me how some of you young people think socialism, marxism, communism is something new and fantastic, you created.

Actually SOME people just don't want Investors breathing down their backs telling them how to do their job so they get a return on their investments. When you have Investors your forced to play it safe and you end up with cookie cutter MMOs of MMOs that have worked in the past. There is no room for true creative innovation. KickStarter has paved the way for us Indies to get the funding we need with out the negative aspects of Investors.

Greed Monger - Seems to be dead and there are no news or ALPHA/BETA which was promised more than a year ago. I feel bad for people that paid $500 or more for virtual land and i feel bad for MarkeeDragon who promoted it and probably invested too.

Markeedragon Interview

Kickstarter

Greed Monger is FAR from dead... Yes we ran into delays for many different reasons but we are still hard at work and still fully intend/expect to release a great MMO.

You been saying that for 2 years and have nothing to show for it.

----

You switched Engines from Unity to Hero back to Unity and now you doing Voxel based. There is nothing on your website that shows a game in development just very old videos from old engines, more begging for money and a forum that is almost completely dead.

----

Where are the regular updates? Where is the ALPHA and BETA. 2 years behind schedule. No offense but do you really think people take you serious when you say you going to release a great MMO?

The last 2 years we have been working on Prototypes for many of our core systems. We have been gathering together the best tools in order to ensure we have everything we need to create the MMO we set out to make. All of this SHOULD have been done before we ever went public with GM. We went public way too soon and as a result we are roughly a Year and a half late in getting our Alpha launched. Lessons have been learned and we are making the most of what we have. Future Projects we will do things differently.

Yes we switched Engines from Unity to Hero then back to Unity... Yes we are using a Custom Voxel Terrain Engine FOR Unity3d. The Game Engine we are using hasn't changed just the Terrain Engine. The default Terrain Engine in Unity is highly out dated and isn't able to do alot of what we want to be able to do with it. The Voxel Terrain Engine allows us to do alot of extra stuff like seamless caves, over hangs, ect. that traditional heightmap based Terrain Engines aren't able to do.

As for regular Updates we are working to increase the amount of updates we post. It's hard to get updates out with not having a PR Rep. or Community Manager. But we are working to improve in this area.

Doubt you need a PR rep. to post progress on a project more than once every 6 months ...

I post Progress Reports to our Forum and once in a while to our Facebook page. Our Website rarely get's updated since our PR Rep. left for personal Reasons however our forum like I said get's updates posted to fairly often. Jason sent out an update to our KickStarter backers this past Friday and I posted it to our Forum the same day.

Here is a link to the update on our Forum:

http://www.greedmonger.com/forum/showthread.php?1990-We-are-still-here!-Some-updates-on-our-progress

I also posted an update on what happened over the month of June:

The Repopulation - This game had TWO Kickstarter campaigns and still looks horrible. At least there is a working Alpha and you can actually "play" it (so i am told). It is far from finished and i hope it eventually will be polished and finished.

Kickstarter #1

Kickstarter #2

----

Shroud of the Avatar - While i love Ultima, this game is a joke. Made with the Unity engine consisting of tiny zones, no open world, bad graphics and animations, it all looks rather amateurish to me and nothing like i expected from Lord British himself. Very disappointing.

Kickstarter

----

Those are just a few, but i have no hope for any of the others to be actually good or finished ever.

Yes Unity's built in Networking isn't capable of Handling the loads of a MMO... How ever the great thing about Unity is that your not forced to use their networking. You can use a 3rd party solution which is more then capable of handling hundreds of players per area OR even creating your own Custom Networking which is able to handle the load if you want something designed specifically for your needs.

We are currently working on Server side collusion and you will see in our roadmap when we are trying to release it. Once that's done all the other aspects that has to do with movement and so forth will fall in place as they all relay on server side collusion. The big reason we did the basic systems first was so that developers can start working right away while we do the server side collusion as it takes allot of time to do and only will influence the game play once you are at the stage of full game play. As well the majority of developers wanted systems first before that, which we have now done all that's needed to get them going.

Authoritative Servers effects EVERY aspect of Game Play not just once you get to full game play. Your unable to do anything where the Servers needs to know about the world when Server Side Physics/Collision isn't implemented as a result of the Server having no concept of the world. Anything you want to do with Triggers isn't possible with out a server side Physics Engine. The list really goes on concerning things you can't do until collision/physics is implemented. Not to mention that what the Servers are capable of doing will change Dramatically once you add in Physics and Collision. This is something that SHOULD have been included right from the start before you guys even went public with Atavism because it's SO important. It shouldn't be an after thought added in later it should have been a key component of the Server built in when the Server was created. Instead your whole Server is based on a Failed MMO Engine (Multiverse) who they them selves were never able to add in Physics.

We hold a License for Atavism for Greed Monger. I've personally developed a few of the plugins that come standard with Atavism right now. And I've got some other Plugins that I've created for Atavism and will be selling on their Plugin Store once it opens. Among them is a UniStorm Integration which allows the Server to handle generating Weather and handling the Syncing of the Day/Night Cycle with all connected Clients.

Atavism still requires a vast amount of Work and has many missing features that have been promised to us since we bought the license back in January. Like the poster above me said some of the biggest features still missing include Server Side Collision and Physics, Authoritative Movement, and even Distributed Servers/Plugins (offloading resource intensive Plugins to their own Physical Hardware). There have also been some major bugs that we and others have reported repeatedly that have failed to ever be fixed.

If you are looking for a Hobby Project and have no strict time table then Atavism is certainly worth checking out inspite of it's flaws.

That is why that type of money up front is NEVER a good idea. You should not even wrap your head around that game, just file it under  the type of business you  don't want to support.

Leave pre-game support to the big investors who can afford to lose money.

Game development is VERY costly if done well but i think MANY people are fooled into thinking 100k can't do much to fool an average gamer's eye.

You can EASILY  block out a large game world with some land/water textures and a few models like trees and bush.it does not take any money at all aside from maybe paying 1-2 people to help you.

A skilled modeler can make an animated model in no time,so they can build a map,put in a character, cloth it and fake people into thinking there is some great game that awaits. They can even make a few assets like a castle or house  or even use prefab models free off the internet.

If you ever check out Epic games Epic Citadel,it is an amazing piece of work of a small village,it took ONE guy a month, yet these so called kick starter games can't show us anything remotely that good with  team and several months into it.

We see so many people crying about others posting negative comments, well what do they think marketing is?Marketing is a process to mislead and coerce people into buying their product.I wish people would quit falling into marketing traps and let the rich make the game, then decide to support it when it is DONE.

Every screen shot I've see for this game is either purchased assets still rendered in max or blender or just using Unity or hero's default models assets.  The screen shots of the girl standing there with a weapon is the ready made model from Heroengine, anyone can spend 199 bucks log into a hosted hero server and take that screenshot.  The other screen shots appear to be made in Unity with some asset store models, again anyone could set that up in hour. He switch back and forth a couple of times between engines.  My guess is that Heroengine proved to difficult to work with (uses its own scripting language) and is actually a pretty complex environment.  Unity supports c#, java and its own language much easier to develop in.

I haven't seen anything original yet.

Have you seen any Screenshots with our UI in place... Our UI is 100% custom! Have you seen any screenshots with our Housing Modules... Our Housing Modules represent $20,000 worth of CUSTOM work done for the game all because the community wanted Modular Housing. I am in the process of creating a Custom Day/Night Cycle designed for use over the Network. Granted we are using alot of Bought Assets that we bought from the Asset Store but who cares... The great thing about Unity IS the asset Store and the fact that you can take advantage of a very talented community of 3d modelers who make their assets available through the Asset Store. The only difference between getting stuff off of the Asset Store and hiring a 3rd party to create stuff for us is that we don't own sole rights to it. All that means is that the price for the work is cut down because they have multiple people licensing it.

Most of the updates have also been posted to our Official Facebook account. As for KickStarter Backer updates like I've said I had nothing to do with creating that KickStarter campaign and as a result I am not able to post updates on the KickStarter Page or send a email out to all of the backers through kickstarter.

When I post here I have to wait until some one else have posted something about our Game. Developers aren't allowed to create threads to post updates about their games. However they can post updates if someone else first created the thread in response to the thread that was started.

Interesting...I guess you have not yet read this thread http://www.greedmonger.com/forum/showthread.php?1939-Billy-Bolts-Press-Release&p=28772#post28772 in which the backers are disgusted regarding a Press release for a new "Electric Crow" game while they are still nearly in the dark. A few of the multi Thousand dollar backers also not seeming very happy about the communication and updates.

http://www.greedmonger.com/forum/showthread.php?1229-GM-T-Shirts-Being-designed-now!&p=28773#post28773 here is another gem from the forum- People still have not received their T Shirts , you said they would be sent out soon and 2 months later this person comments

"How far away is soon? 2 months after your posting... Still nothing seems to happen. Could you please send them out? The garage shouldn't be too far away... "

But hey he only gave you guys a cool Thousand Dollars- cannot expect Jason Appleton to actually walk to the garage and throw something in the mail.

Nope- I have changed my mind even regarding you- At this point I think you are well aware of the scam nature of this project and the general charater of Mr Appleton and yet you come here and make what looks to me like blatant dishonest comments.

Oh well, pre Alpha in a few days right (according to the press release for the other 'Electric Crow" game.

I'm really not sure where to begin here... Yes I am aware of both of those threads. The first Thread I have even personally responded to. It really amazes me how anyone could be upset over a Project our Company was involved in that had completely nothing to do with the GM Team other then Jason as the Company owner organizing it. There are alot of Companies that consists of multiple Teams all working on different Projects and you don't see people yelling and getting angry at those Companies. No one was pulled off of Greed Monger to work on Billy Bolts. And as far as I know there was completely no funding from Greed Monger used in the making of Billy Bolts. So why does it matter that our Company Owner organized another Team to work on a 2nd Project?

The issue with the Shirts IS an issue Jason needs to address and he will address it in his time. It is NOT my place to force him to address it. He is MY boss... I am NOT HIS boss.

What dishonest Comments have I made here? Going through all my posts here in this thread I don't see any. Maybe you could get every ounce of Information I have and then point out where my dishonest comments are? That would really be great. Thanks!

All of the updates I've posted here have first been posted to our forum. It's in a section that might be available to Signed in Members only though. Most of the updates have also been posted to our Official Facebook account. As for KickStarter Backer updates like I've said I had nothing to do with creating that KickStarter campaign and as a result I am not able to post updates on the KickStarter Page or send a email out to all of the backers through kickstarter.

Jason hasn't once said anything in this thread... We have been pretty mature about how we conduct our selves here. It seems the only ones bringing up anything about lawsuits isn't us now... No one is being sued... No lawsuits are going to be filed... So please let's keep things on topic and mature... Thanks.

As for an update... We are having alot of fun testing. Things are really starting to look like a game now that we have combat and resource gathering in. March 15th when we get our Voxel Terrain on the Server is going to be huge for us.

Last night we had a very productive night of testing. I was up all night with the QA Team and I'm sure some of them were up all night though most of them are from other time zones. We had some nice PvP battles going on but we were mostly doing PvM. We had a bunch of Tree Ents, Wolves, and Griffons harmed in the process... As the night came to a close I got basic Mining in place and had the Tree Ents start to drop Wood Logs so we could start gathering Resources.

Today I am upgrading our Crafting system to the latest code for the Framework we are using and reworking some parts of the Crafting System. I'll be pushing the Crafting System out to our Testing Server tonight so we can start testing it. We have a bunch of Ores that need to be smelted and Logs that need to be cut down into boards.

Some issues we found include:

- Once in a while Chat will stop working - Known issue but since it doesn't happen all the time it's hard to track down.

- Servers will crash from time to time if no one has used them in a while. Again known issue with the framework but hard to track down since conditions have to be just right for it to happen.

- Some jitter in movement - Will be worked on and corrected.

- Bug with Minimizing the Client Window - Avatars start to take on the texture of the ground they are standing on. - Again Known issue and a fix will be forth coming

- Some other small low priority issues that will be worked on through out Alpha

Really so far we haven't found any major show stopping bugs that would require our attention before our Pre-Alpha Release. Testing will continue however as we gear up for our Pre-Alpha Launch. Jason will make the announcement on our forum once we are ready.

I am in the process of starting up our Servers that will be used in our 2nd Pre-Alpha test... Our QA Team will be getting access to a testing Client this evening so they can start running around in game and testing for any Major issues ahead of our Pre-Alpha Launch.

Inventory
Movement
Chat
Items
Resource Nodes

I Didn't post yesterday or today because I am away spending time with my Family and I've been babysitting my Cousin's Kids yesterday and today. We have plenty going on that could be being updated on our Forum if I was home.

James, honestly I am not directing any of this at you- As I have said, I think you are being duped along with the people who forked over the $$$- I think you are about it buddy, the entire working part of the company. You are wearing all the hats and I would bet the 'pay' isnt the greatest for what you are doing and any promise of future profit sharing is probably looking rather slim.

I understand you are working your butt off, trying your hardest and doing more than your share of work-

Personally , I hold you in pretty high regards based on what I have seen and read.

-I also expect you to defend the game, the company and your boss on a public forum. That goes without saying. Doesnt change my opinion however and time will tell.

You ARE entitled to your Opinion... However I see what's going on behind the scenes and while yes we have had a rocky and slow start things ARE moving forward and MOST of your worries and Concerns aren't true.

We have a fairly large team for a Indie Development Team... Our Team is far from teams like WoW's team or other AAA Development Studios with thousands working on the game but for a Indie we have a pretty sizable team. In our Main Development Skype Discussion we have 17 active members. Some of them are our World Builders, 3D Modelers, texture artists, ect. Who's jobs are complete until after we launch Alpha but they are still very much a active part of the team and are on stand by waiting for new tasks. We currently have 2 of us working on Programming. I'm responsible for Server side Coding, Managing the Servers, Working on Networking and Database Design, Development, and management. Our other Programmer handles all of the Client Side stuff. I'll be handling all of our PHP Development for Game Integration into our Website, Parcel Auction System, Cash shop, ect. and I'll be Developing our Facebook App. that integrates GM into Facebook though that will be done Post-Launch.

Post-Launch I'll continue to Lead the Team and I'll be handling our R&D department that we will be starting up to research and Prototype new Technology to add to the game.

We also have a sizable Q&A Department that is testing out each new build, checking for Bugs, and hounding us to fix things and make things more usable as they find issues. They Spend hours each night running around in our Windows Client and Mac client making sure that the user experience is the same between Operating Systems and making sure that our Players will have a solid experience once we officially launch.

As for pay I can't say what each team member is making as that's between them and Jason but I can let you guys know what I'm making. We would like to be as open with you guys as possible and it's only right that I be the first... I am officially labeled as Volunteer. However I've been making bonuses upon completing different tasks. To date I have gotten a new Mid range Gaming Rig valued at $800. My old computer was a 2008 $400 walmart special so not even close to being good enough for development. This Development PC is a huge improvement. I have gotten a $1200 or so Unity Pro License. I got $2,000 December 2012 for my work leading up to our KickStarter Campaign and then through out the KickStarter Campaign, I've gotten a couple $500 checks over the last year and I believe a $200 check for a Birthday Bonus in 2013. I then have been promised a pretty sizable check upon launching Alpha but I won't say the amount until I see how much I actually get where it's taken us so long to launch Alpha. I've then been promised a percentage of profits post launch and funding to start up a R&D department to Prototype new things to add to the game and future games.

We are still going strong... I post on our forum all the time and I post on our Facebook page from time to time. Trying to manage the team doesn't leave me much time to update our Twitter and Facebook pages but I do the best I can. As for our KickStarter page I had nothing to do with creating the KickStarter page and since I was a member of the Development Team I didn't pledge any money toward it so I have no ability at all to post any updates on the comments. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are now past Feb. 15th and the Combat and Crafting Portions of that Roadmap are in place. The Crafting System is still a work in progress and is far from the final Version we have in mind but it's to a Playable Alpha phase ready for testing. Our Client Programmer is working on our Client Side stuff, getting our UIs integrated into our MMO Framework, and gearing up for Alpha. All in all we are pretty quickly nearing the Launch of our Alpha test.

Some other note worthy dates include March 15th which is when we will be getting our Voxel Engine Integrated into the Game.

That all sounds good but your official forum is dead (including posts from you and the CEO), your Facebook seems dead and there really has been news  since December which was essentially 'I am switching jobs, cannot say much because I could be sued (who does the CEO hang around with since hes always threatening to sue or now says he cannot talk about his former employer or he could be sued?) I am now funding this with my own money, will be ready when its ready..."

My issue (which has not been addressed) is how someone (speaking of the CEO, not yourself) could have the time to post so often while garnering thousands of dollars from the public and now- He is essentially MIA?

I know he works and is busy- Some of your contributers have 'donated' $2,500 or more and for $100K (or more) I would think a little time could be made each month (or even week) on your own forum.

-This is nothing against you either. Personally, I think the work and everything else is being left on your shoulders and you are doing everything you can. I think this was a scam from day 1 (not that I think you were privy.) and I think the workload is far too much and what will eventually (if ever) be released will be broken and barely playable and shut down very quickly.

The CEO knows a whole lot about the legal system it seems, and I think he found a way to make a nice payment towards his living expenses and used alot of people including yourself-

-But thats just my opinion, of course.

I know where your coming from. However I am officially the Team Lead. Anything that comes from me might just as well have came from Jason. Jason has put me in charge of All of the Technical stuff. He's the Company Owner and handles the behind the scenes Business aspects of running the team.

Another way to look at it is let's take a look at EQ:N. You never see the owner of Sony or Sony Online Entertainment doing interviews and talking about EQ:N you see the Team Lead, You see the Team's PR Reps, you see the different Leads taking interviews. The Owner of SOE sits behind a desk writing the checks, hiring the staff, ect. They then put faith in their team that they have put together to see the Project through. That's basically what Jason is doing. He's put the team together, He put me in charge of the team, and now he has control over all of the major details and writes the checks. It's up to us to deal with MMORPG.com, Deal with our Forums, Up to me to Lead the team, ect.
