I started thinking about this when I read that Smed is excited about the future of sandbox gaming. The only thing that excites Smed is money.  If SOE did not have to pay for the SW license this would be a minimal amount of work for some easy money.

To SOE's credit they have done a lot of work to SWG since the NGE. It was actually a pretty solid game (with horrible combat). Upgrade the graphics a tad, change the races and you are pretty much off and running.

Just a thought.

Its an in house engine. EQ II used it and went further with it. Then Vanguard is the UT 2 engine. And DC Universe online is the UT 3 Engine.

The CSM is in their way to Iceland to talk with CCP so lets wait and see what happens.

The real fear is that LA has the ability to step in and call the shots whenever they like. Say a year or two down the road they suddenly get an idea about a change in direction they want they game to go and force Bioware to do it.

Which is why I wont put my time into this game based on this simple truth. I think the uphill battle is that gamers need a studio that is dedicated to them without screwing the customer over. I don't see any at all these days who can hold that title for "life" for MMORPG's.

That's what I had in mind when I made the statement I did, (needing a ship to buy one from CCP).

As for commitment to saying "no", at this point they are better off not saying no to anything, if things change there's less back-peddling to do. These decisions obviously have a financial focus, which says to me they need extra income to continue as a successful company.

Maybe they bit off more than they could chew, with all they have going on development wise. As a company they need to focus on what is best for them. Sure pissing off thousands of people isn't the best way at achieving such a goal, but they need to learn to not let players control their financial endeavors. They've given to much pull to players in backing out of many decisions, simply because there was outcry.

This sends the wrong message as it leads to more and more outcry everytime they want to try something to increase earnings.

They need to commit to something soon as EVE is imploding. This whole situation has NGE written all over it. Sure the conditions are very different but the outcome will be the same. In SWG they reworked the game mechanics to something completely different. In EVE the economy IS the major game mechanic. Every other aspect of the game is tied to it in some way. Minor changes to the economy in EVE effects trickle down changes to every other aspect of the game. The economy is the backbone of the gameplay in EVE. If they offer even ship fittings in the NeX this will change the entire economy and in effect change the way EVE is played.

 

Remember the server wide protests in SWG when the NGE was first implemented? It's happening in EVE right now. They need to do what SOE didn't. Change course back to what the playerbase wants. If they don't they will not only lose a boatload of subs but they will have disgruntled vets on every board making them out to be the devil incarnate... Sound like something we've seen before? This will have the effect of driving new players away in droves.

 

Another similarity is the way they are handling it. They are sounding a lot like Mr. John Smedly the last couple of days. SWG never recovered from the NGE and niether will EVE if they continue this. SWG is shutting down will EVE be next? I for one hope they see the light and do something... anything very soon to defuse this situation. I like EVE... Heck I even love the possibilities Incarna could bring but it will be all for naught if they let this situation get any more out of control.

Bren I see the exact same attitude. In the software world developers think they knwo better than the end user which is a huge mistake. I also think CCP thinks everyone is loaded with cash which is not true these days. The US is on the verge of economic collapse, china is a false economy, Russia's economy is tripping, the EU economic problems are the same, they made a huuuge mistake.

I am going to give them a week to see what changes they implement based on the feedback from the customers before I write this game off. I feel very taken advantage of with the loyalty I gave this company. 

CCP usually listens to the feedback when it is this large. I still consider this pricing structure to be complete and utter rubbish, mier, and scrap metal. So here is 7 business days of feedback to wait and see what happens.

Thats up to $19.99  and $25.00 per item in real money...I..am...a little disgusted. I don't want to over react but my hero just became evil.

I am heading back in game. I need to start preparing for Dust Bunnies with Dust 514. And for walking in stations  I cant wait for the mini game called "sec wars". I hope they did not ditch it. It will be  a much later addition in cantinas I believe.

I have to wonder if this hacking is essential contrived. Japan has an earthquake and then Sony is hacked and we see a pattern increasing in this criminal activity across the board\grid of any compnay that has $$$$,  in Spain suspects were arrested then let go who are part of a known hacking ring on this issue. Personally I blame Skynet. Nothing to think about here folks, move along. 

For me its Age of Conan and LOTRO. But the first phase of Incarna comes out in a few days so I might jump back into Eve Online and get ready for Dust 514. The faction changes have been good to me in AoC.
