DCUO has true action based combat with combos and a good skill system. Plus you can hot swap between DPS and whatever support role your power is. |

SWTOR has proved you can have story in a sandbox MMO...
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 2/07/12 10:09:59 AM
Originally posted by spizz Apples and oranges are both fruits. They both provide dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals, and are healthy foods. So are you saying SWTOR is a sandbox game, then? Yes, I'm being snarky, but I always hated the "apples and oranges" line because apples and oranges are actually very similar and not different enough to even make this saying remotely viable. Apples and wrenches, now those two are completely different. And no, SWTOR certainly is nothing even remotely close to a sandbox game. It's like comparing dogs and handwash. ;p |

According to the Troika character creation quiz at the beginning of their most excellent CRPG, I'm Gangrel. So there you go. And Brujah as my second choice. |

I think the reason ToR is retaining its popularity is that it appeals to the the RPG audiance rather than the tradional RPG player .

How do you know it's retaining its numbers? It's only been live for a ~month. |

should swtor have built their own engine?
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 1/25/12 10:04:51 AM
Originally posted by hercules I'm sure the Hero engine they're using now to build the game is nothing like it was when they first started using it. It's probably so heavily modified for their purposes that it might as well be their own engine. Probably just like DCUO or Aion using the Unreal engine. I think that creating thei own engine from the ground up would have cost another 2 years of development - money I'm sure EA did not want to shell out considering they already spent $200+ million on it already. |

Saying SandBox is like saying the "F" Word.
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 1/25/12 9:53:08 AM
I love saying the "F" word. I also love saying "Didgeridoo." As for "Sandbox," that too is a fun word. It'd be even better if there were more sandbox options in more MMOs. Sadly, that ship sailed with the death of SWG, AFAIC. I guess EVE can hold that candle, but that game really doesn't appeal to me beyond being a very pretty spreadsheet (and just as exciting). Now, a Shadowrun sandbox would be awesome-sauce-with-bacon-gravy, but that'll never happen. Oh, and I actually agree with the op. There needs to be more of that at the very least in thempark games. |

Why Swtor is not for roleplayers
Role Playing Discussion « General Discussion 1/06/12 1:54:54 PM
That's absurd. While chat bubbles are a great aid for roleplaying, it's not mandatory. AS Tim Gunn would say, just Make it Work with the tools you have. To avoid a game simply because it doesn't have chat bubbles is just wonky thinking. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: The Official SWTOR Review
News Discussion « General Discussion 1/06/12 9:54:19 AM
I wouldn't say crafting is fun, but very convenient in that I'm not staring at a progress bar. I send my companion away to do the actual crafting while i occupy my time doing actual fun stuff. So, I guess that makes crafting fun since my characters is not the one actually crafting... I actually think a score within the 8s is fair. |

If you like to group up through your adventures, now is the time to get in. If you don't care about grouping and group content, wait for the sale in Feb/March. |

SWTOR: A Great, Well Made, Innovative Game that Sucks
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 12/22/11 12:40:15 PM
Originally posted by BullseyeArc1 I unfortunately agree. I knew it would sell like gangbusters initially, but I also know (speculate) that numbers will drop dramatically come the end of February/beginning of March. This will result in the inevitable EA laying-off-of-the-developers to cut maintenance costs and scrambling to get content out that might lure back folks who left because they finished the main quest(s). I predict that level caps will raise in April by ~5, with new post 50, class specific quests to further the story, which is the game's strongest point, imo. The main story lines are the game's greatest assets and biggest liabilities since that really is the main pillar of the game. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: The #1 Reason to Play SWTOR
News Discussion « General Discussion 12/22/11 11:46:00 AM
Questing is by far the best part of SWTOR, imo. Combat is standard MMORPG circa 2007, so it won't grab anyone there. Come for Star Wars, stay for the story. |

Originally posted by Cavod Agreed. OP probably was too young or never heard of the legends of poor launches: 1. Anarchy Online (the standard by which all poor launches are judged) 2. Ultima Online (most folks couldn't even log in for weeks on end) 3. Star Wars Galaxies 4. World of Warcraft (almost every day there were server crashes that lasted more than a day) 5. Age of Conan |
