My thought? The 'shops' they open up, as well as belonging to bigger companies willing to support them, in hopes that the item shops will take off. You always get those die hard players, who are willing to spend their cash in paying for power-ups and loot, then paying for a 'pay to play' MMO. If someone's willing to pay cash for gold? There's no telling what they'll do to get an edge in a game, IMHO. :)
