How old school of an online gamer are you?

Originally posted by Dibdabs I've been playing online since LORD hit the BBS scene in 1989, and have never heard of the word either.
Same, PnP/BBS doors (ooooh CircleMUD on a 2-node system was my first MUD experience... it blew my mind) since 85-ish, MUDs like a fiend since about 92, gui MMOs since they were around. Never heard the word Mun, and it sounds like something generated by the Harry Potter generation. Why not just call them "muggles?" *roll*
Nobody outside whatever strange, small circle suggested it calls anybody "Muns..." And urban dictionary is about the last reliable source I'd go to for a consensus definition.
Now as for good early Doors: I did like LORD but it got bizarro as it grew (you can find many Legend of the GREEN dragon servers online now - clone of LORD)... Operation Overkill and OO2 were incredibly good, and Usurper was in my opinion a far superior re-stitching of LORD's basic underlying mechanics. TW2002 was and still remains epic. Now almost all the old database apps are available for free, and TW is available via telnet ... Is there even still a concept (or purpose for) of a dial-up BBS? I can't remember when the last time was that I even had a phone modem, heck we don't even have a phone line at the house. |

Heavy, then a tie between medic and sniper.
I've only taken to liking the sniper lately after finally grokking it enough to get some pretty awesome streaks. And to be honest, I'm working on making the demoman my favorite. I never liked it much, because he doesn't have a "normal" weapon (except for the melee whiskey bottel of course, but I mean a sidearm of some type)... however last weekend when doing the holiday achievements I finally "got" at least part of what makes demoman awesome and annoying. Got way more kills on demo than I'd ever gotten as a result. |

I've been playing Torchlight since release. It's very well done, and there is a fairly active Steam community chat going on all day and night which - since Steam chat comes up in game - makes for an interesting combination of very definitely 1-player hack and slash and chat. Incidentally, I just played through D2 two weeks ago for the first time in a long, long time. It is still a great game. The "story" of TL is not the focal point, it's really a hack and slash monty haul done right. Anyway, I won't start any new threads on th is because it isn't really the point. I think the original assertion that Runic is the new Blizzard is a little bizarre, however I do not deny that Runic took an *obvious* opportunity releasing a solid game at a low pricepoint. There has been a huge gap in ARPG, and Blizzard being Blizzard sat on D3 long enough to make the ravenous hounds willing to take on just about any release. Luckily for the hounds, this steak is tasty. I'm looking forward to seeing the power of the editor, and the modules created by the community. It is what it is. If you like the demo, pick it up and support the devs. They've been hanging out in the Steam chat talking about design decisions and taking note of the very few bugs that have been discovered. my $.02 |

Yep, this looks like something worth giving a shot. I'm glad they're gearing it for a younger audience - I'd like to have something my daughter could (attempt to) play - but it still looks a lot of fun for me. Jumping platform puzzles are great, and she doesn't have decades of Mario experience. >:) |

However, none of what *we* would usually think of when we think of MMO(RPG)s that I know of ... geez, how about being spammed every time somebody downs a boss in WOW? :/ Hope the DBM folks are as grossed out as that thought as I am... Hrm, nice. I cancelled about 2 months ago due to time constraints, but that would make for an interesting return. It does almost seem like a parallel version of the game (lobby-ish as mentioned), but I'm not sure that is a weakness at all - honestly why should I care? If not this tool being the lobby, then standing around listening to tools spamming the achievements they need to join their uber-PUG (which will wipe anyway) becomes the Lobby. Still not going to beat guild grouping, obviously, but you know sometimes your guild just isn't on. |

I noticed the OP date too, necromancy indeed, but this is still relevant.
As another responder noted, the biggest thing to me has been *numerous* situations where we may be going through a zone, an instance, or just get to a key moment and suddenly the healer is afk and hanging back at the beginning of the instance (meanwhile the tank, who regardless of age should have noticed this, has begun pulling mobs in a huge way) ... some 10 minutes later he comes back and starts bitching about his effing bastard of a dad making him walk the dog.... or take the trash out... or something. Or a younger guildmate in the same situation comes on the next day, after idling out, and says MY FSCKING MOM MADE ME GO TO BED! THAT BIATCH! (despite it being 2am on a school night of course)... The problem is not that I don't want to play with younger kids, it's a game, we're all equal in the sense that we want the shiny new loot or the next pile of currency for some item, or the next level. The problem is *I* am dad, and I don't want to have my gametime subjected to some kid's household chores. I almost said "to some kid's parents" but it would be unfair to blame it on them. -- NOW to be perfectly fair, this has nothing to do with being "kids" either, particularly. For some reason some of the 420 people who want to giggle and chirp about how high they're getting have a habit of disappearing for hours when they go take care of their business. And I was in a group the other day with adults, I think, and that healer disappearing wasn't due to dad making him take the dog out - it was he walked off to get something to eat. Responsibility to your group, even if it is just a short-term PUG grinding mobs, goes a LONG way in gaining in-game respect. If you don't tell people you are 12, and they can't tell, great for you -everybody must be benefiting. |

I've often wondered whether the cost of admission would be worth it, I suppose being paid back in a really incredibly good community and some unique events. As a long-time text mudder, though, I have yet to pay for anything. For something along the lines, at least as far as I can tell, of Simutronics I think the closest would be any of these http://www.ironrealms.com/ . I've personally started a priest on achaea a few months back and he's only about level 12, and there is a rather complicated (to me!) set of tasks I must complete etc to even be considered more than an acolyte in my House. It's definitely not your plain ROM/Diku clone. Then there is the venerable Aardwolf (http://www.aardwolf.com/) and the supernewbie phenomenon (running quests for quest points with experience turned off, and fully gearing out a level 1 - who then has a huge advantage in low level campaigns and PvP). I think the number of folks even marginally interested in text muds on this site may now be up to 2 including you, so please let me know if you give simutronics a try. |

Looking for something different in a world where WoW made games the same (LONG)

That's pretty good, I hope it works out well and some folks for which the initial download was a barrier to entry will give it a try. I'm frequently tempted to go back to EQ2, I enjoyed their grinds. ;) |

I'm 34 in a month. I had that epiphany after doing a 10+ hour (good lord, what a loser I am...) full Kara run with numerous wipes last year. It was a Saturday, I didn't see my kids or wife all day, I just sat in this chair with the stupid ventrilo mic in my face all day. My hair literally hurt after I took it off... Best part of WOTLK was the Arena "raid" which could be done in almost no time, and had great gear dropping. Yes people were whining and bitching, but I'm kind of at the point where "putting in the time" to "earn" the "right" to wear the best gear equates to a complete waste of life.
Our days are numbered. I don't regret having a lot of fun in games, and still will, but there comes a point where excess is excess and waste is waste. I don't think I'll look back when I'm old and regret not having that last tier piece, but I don't want to look back and say "how many thousands of hours, for what???" I'm already able to say that now, so I'm trying to minimize it. and pain is pain. :) ums |

Sounds like something I'll have to check out. Nate: http://www.direct2drive.com/3304/product/Buy-Titan-Quest-Bundle-Download seems to be back up to $19.95 for the bundle. Still an incredible bargain, even if you do find something else. Give it a shot, there's still an active TQ community including tons of build discussion and mods. It can also be had on Steam for the same price (Gold edition). If you buy TQ, do not skip the expansion. It adds some critical usability upgrades imo.

As mentioned in my post, this game unfortunately shuts down 1/10/10. It's a great game, I paid the $5 for a while to wear the rainbow drops. Tongue in cheek humor all over the place, a parody of MMOs / RPGs, and a blast to play. |

Hey Nate, As an aside, I've seen a lot of your posts lately, and frankly I think you talk a lot of sense. You're exactly the kind of person I'd want to be in a guild with, but that's not your question. Since DungeonRunners is going/went offline, I don't know of anything else out there - however for the last week or so I have been playing the best Diablo style game on the internet right now which is, not astonishingly, Diablo2. It's interesting now going back and seeing how much the Diablo classes/gear influenced the Warcraft lore. If you're looking for something very D2-like but improved UI/options and better graphics, and if you don't already have it, do yourself a favor and buy TitanQuest with the expansion. Last week it was on sale on D2D for like $9.99. -- Now prepare for the responses to this which whine about Diablo2's graphics, TitanQuest's content, and neither of them being "massive" ... Oh somehow Pre-CU SWG will come up, be sure of that. I've been meaning to post a "the best current multiplayer game" thread pointing back to D2 all week, so I'll just satisfy that need by way of this response. ums |
