This one doesn't bother me nearly as much as some of the "random humor" that was linked in the Random Humor section in the past few years...

Case in point, check out the wacky antics of GUComics, currently featuring an IKEA joke.

Another thumbs-up for Perpetuum.

But, I would disagree that it provides "a whole new experience."  I was thinking about going back to EVE (away for 3 years, probably a good thing) but I ended up trialing this.  It is like EVE only planetside with robots instead of ships.  And when I say like EVE, I mean "almost identical to EVE in form, concept and execution" only with robots roving around using WASD instead of all pointy clicky.  If you didn't like EVE's combat, though, you won't like it in Perp.

Also the limitations on trial accts include the inability to buy player-crafted items on the market BUT you /are/ able to see the prices.  The standard items that are always available cost about twice as much if you buy the game-generated items (e.g., lowbie missiles).  I'm almost tempted to throw them $10 just so I can buy my noob missiles for 55 credits instead of 110.

Now regarding StarQuestOnline... that's a whole different animal, indeed.  I want to get into it, in exactly the same way I "Want" to get into Dwarf Fortress.

My daughter has an ipod touch that she and her little brother play on.  There are parental controls that allow for disabling of, among other things, any purchases.  This is not rocket science, the parents who either do not disable this or associate their CC with their KID'S iTunes account are morons.

What. Is. Polish?

After reading through early-access reviews, I have come across this term frequently - and obviously I am not the only one, because this poll showed up demonstrates that it has become activated in our current discussion vocab.

So here's my beef with it, because the most popular schema that it has been used in is something along the lines of :

Oh, yes, it has a lot of polish.

--

Polish is not something you want a "lot" of.  You want it to be used, to burnish or give a shiny coat to whatever (take that metaphorically for the game of course - we all know what this is trying to mean, I'm just arguing against its use).  You don't want it to still be there when you get your polished thing.

Example: If I take my car to get it detailed, and they whistle me out to the front of the shop to pick up my car and the dude says "check it out, it has a lot of polish!" then I would tell him, "yeah, so take it back and wipe that crap off please."

--

Polish is a tool that serves a purpose.  Games, cars, shoes should "be polished" but not "have polish."  If the only thing that sticks out in someone's mind is the "polish" something "has," then it makes me think initially that it is actually incomplete and hiding behind a veneer of sticky gunk used to "finish" but not to "COAT" something.

Anyway soapbox off.  All the best wishes to Rift and the players, maybe I'll join you guys one of these days.

I grabbed it too for $6.  I've played demos and promos since launch but never subbed.  It's stll not perfect, feels a little weird.  Wish my button3 would switch me to targeting mode without coming to a stop, but compared to the other options out there it's fairly unique.

One thing I find kind of weird is although I'm speccing rifleman, so far the majority of my combat has been dual-wield melee.  A frying pan and pipe tear people up better than the atrocious paintball gun you start with.  I find it a little hard to stay up on the ammo crafting curve, also.  It's just too easy to run out for me yet, but I've heard that S2 and S3 introduce more ranged-bosses where rifles come into their own (and aren't paintball guns).

I feel very tempted to buy the whole package, actually I'm thinking of getting my Credit Card on my way back to my computer after diner.

Do you need Guild Wars with all it's expansions when Guild Wars 2 comes out?

No, that would be a ridiculous requirement on their part.  Whereas there will be some method of transferring remnants of your old characters (plenty of people have spent a lot of time unlocking titles... it's very completionist-oriented if you want it to be) the game itself will stand alone.

That said, even 5 years later I still enjoy a return to GW and in my opinion the graphics have aged very well.

If were to reduce, a $2 increment wouldn't be very convincing at all.

Diablo2.  It's unfortunate that Dungeon Runners shut down, that would have been perfect for you.  Was a fun little thing.

I also like PL.  Currently lev 26 :D

What server are you rolling on?

I enjoyed GW when it was released, and over the years their (non)pricing model has allowed me to continue to enjoy it off and on.  I regret not having an active guild now, I'd love to start a fresh toon this summer and play through all the scenarios again.

GW2 is one of the few things I've been looking forward to for a long, long time.  I think they'd have to go out of their way to really screw it up.  And coming off years of running a successful game, I'm sure they've learned a lot more lessons than they're letting on both gameplay-wise and technically.

May actually (gasp) pre-order, which is one of those things I just DON'T DO anymore... as so many above have said, too many burns.

You ever see the chat in cooperative play in a console game?

Lot's of racial stuff, stuff about jews....

Prediction: console games will have the worst community ever.

As if this is a console phenomenon?

To be fair:

Have you ever seen the chat in (any given multiplayer) PC game?

Every logged into, for example, any counterstrike server... any TF2 server... WoW... IRC.. or how about the city channel in the recently released Global Agenda demo?

As many others, I also lack twitch skills, badly lol.  I just recently got BFBC2 and I am so terrible!!!  Got a friend at work who plays it and has a skill level of 186 to my 1.  I utterly fail at twitch.  Therefore, I need non-twitch games, otherwise I'm out to dry.  Call me what you will (believe me I berate myself enough), but if mmos ever make to move to more twitchy gameplay it's time for me to find a new genre.

I was too, when I 1st Started. Still die alot tho... but keep with it you'll get better.

This Skill level thing must be a console thing.... I don't remeber seeing it on the PC version.

I've been getting better on BC2 myself, at first I was *awful*. ... and for some reason, on COD4MW1 I'm still awful (and on the free weekend of MW2, it was atrocious..)... Not sure why MW both play so differently from BC2, but BC2 has started to click better. You have to find your niche, what you can do long enough to make a contribution before the next death.  Mine is shotgun (SAIGA) + C4 across all the classes that can do it (mainly assault), then flipping to the non-C4 classes as needed.

As to the OP, I've never been top-tier in FPS games, I'm usually mid to bottom mid (rarely but sometimes the very bottom)... but I don't blame it on my being in my mid-30s, I blame it on my never (ever) having been good at it, and  not putting in the practice time.  I would love to see a really good MMOFPS (borderlands is not bad, but .. not MM by any stretch) ... was hoping that GA would have done it, but I'm not convinced.   Wouldn't it be interesting if WoW2 (or whatever...) had hunter classes that actually required aiming for those ridiculous crits?

Yeah, definitely worth it at that price.  I have very few PS3 games, and this was the first.  It's an interesting little thing, with an interesting little toolkit.  If onlytWarioware DIY had the same user content distribution scheme, it would be far better (LBP does it very well).

Not that im a Alganon fanboy or anything(The game looks like shit IMO, will never try it)  But did WoW invent Portals?? there is portals like that in alot of games, and has prolly been way before wow.. Also that portal looks NOTHING like the Dark Portal.

But even so this game do seem abit similar to wow. But i dont think you should base it on just a portal.. if were going to be like that every fucking game is a copy of eachother since they all have some of the same stuff, races, classes and shit in them.

Yes, WoW did invent portals.. As a matter of fact, Valve's game was named as an homage to the release of TBC in 1973.

Incoming:  Luke Skywalkerz, Skieswalker, Skywaller, Skiwalkerz.

Hope i have a huge ignore space...

Almost unrelated to the OP, mainly just in response to what this reminded me of.  I was dropping my kids off at their schools today, and I was behind an SUV with all those stickers on the back showing what their kids are participating in (when do they get any time to play video games?!) and one of the kids was named SKYWALKER... and that was not the first time I've seen that name used as a first name.

Who, why, WTF...? yes, this is my son... SKYWALKER... may the force be with him.

Well, I might check it out... but that first picture, of the guy standing in front of what I can only see as "the portal to Outland" does a lot to undermine any claim that they're moving away from being a WoW clone.

The formula of Realm of the Dark God is also a very interesting one. There's a limited number of minions, you gather up with the other people in your server, slay, slay, slay increasingly difficult minions, get increasingly better gear, maybe die (permeadeath) 'till the god appears, the bunch who've made it to him at the risk of losing high level chars and gear maybe kill him and get the best loot in the game. After that, the same thing all over again.

Just a corrective here, I think you meant Realm of the Mad God rather than the "Dark" ... And I'm not trying to be a tool here, but after reading the post I was intrigued to check it out and it looks like it is worth a go.  (in case any others ignorant of the game wanted to check it out.)

now back to your regularly scheduled thread...

The mana system just irritates me to no end.  I hate having to conserve my power until i find a shrine, though it does add the tactical side.

The mana system is one option out of two that would have both probably irritated you.  In pen and paper D&D you don't have mana (which your message seems to indicate you know) but you do have spell preparation.  No matter how you did it (generic mana pools vs. certain # of spells per circle prepared and ready to blow) you've got to expect they'd put a limit on how many spells could be cast before resting.  Personally I would be happy to see them convert over to setting very specific spell preparations.

Also as for not having enough class variation, considering you can have either really great or really wrecked characters due to the flexibility of multiclassing, as well as a ton of choices in specialization through enhancement, I really don't think you're being fair here.  In that respect it has more "classes" than any MMO I can think of, as flexible as the player cares to make it.

Perhaps I'll try again - I am a casual player and quit in frustration because I was unable to complete the quest where you had to protect a gem from 14 bandits.  In fact, I downloaded the game 2x and hope the new 3rd update will address this problem with an easier, casual mode.

Larry if you do try it again, send me a PM on here and I"ll come on and help you with that quest.  Choose whatever server, I'll roll a new character if I have to.  I can show you how to solo that one on solo and normal mode in whatever class you want (even caster, solo'd it with a wiz a couple nights ago on Elite with a cheap fighter hireling, and it could be done without the hireling with charm person).  Once you're comfortable with the controls it should flow pretty easily.

Thank you for the info, Jaime.  I had read the official site release, but this is far more detailed.  I am happy to hear the sigils are being removed (as a pre-order DDO subscriber who has come back to play a bit more, this was the biggest obstacle).

I am most confused by the need for the "casual" mode.  When I played before I was always with decent guild groups, so maybe I really don't know how Normal scales as the CR increases (?) but from what I've experienced in the last few years, with just a LITTLE bit of careful play, Normal mode is VERY solo-able - and with a decent hireling match-up now, even MORE so.  Anything easier than Normal designed for a group must be easy indeed.

Any idea if a "Casual" dungeon will scale to the actual number of persons entering?  So if one goes in it is equal to the current "Solo" and if two go in it goes up a bit more, but even a full party never reaches "Normal" ?  (Can I put it another way: what the hell? Even ludicrously bad PUGs can destroy Normal level dungeons.  Are they expecting the Farmville crowd to be logging on to DDO?)

--

For anybody who didn't notice it, they did a restructure on points prices yesterday.  The VIP (full sub) account is now officially the worst deal in the game.  Buying points and claiming modules permanently is how I'll do it.  Forget about the XP potions and other timed consumables, but "owning" access account-wide to STK for about $2.50?  Yes please.
