As far as EQ2 is concerned, I can't say as I just can't get into that game. I don't like the graphics and the way they implemented alot of things.

And yesterday, DAoC was ranked higher than Vanguard. That game is horriblely outdated and not very fun.

My level 15 Ranger is in The Old Timers Guild on Hilsbury - the largest guild in Vanguard and even * I * can't find a group to save my life.

When and if I find a group its a goddamn crap shoot as to whether we'll make it 10-15 minutes without a 4-dot mob disappearing during a fight (but still attacking us/killing us/making us run the fuck back and get our corpses).

Even in the largest guild in Vanguard, I have yet to have a successful dungeon run. Every dungeon run I end up with LESS xp than I came in with OR significant XP debt.

I, for one, really LOVED Vanguard during the first 13 levels - enough that I played them 5 times. A Rhaki (fox), Half Elf, Barbarian (Varanjar, this is my 15 Ranger), Qualian Human, and Dwarf.

The 1-13 game most certainly is the best damn MMO online at the moment. Thereafter, it turns into a complete grind fest.

I'm all about a good challenge. I like things that are complicated (I'm a computer programmer by trade). But what I don't like is large ass time gind fests like Vanguard.

Even in UO (I'm talking 1998 UO, not this new crap) we actually felt a sense of accomplishment for grinding for 4-5 hours in a stint. There were no quests to speak of, you just ground the same damn mobs for hours. But you could actually SEE a difference when you did, that's what made it fun.

Not in Vanguard. Even at level 15 I ground for literally 2 hours and got one bubble of XP. If I were to die and was not able to recover my corpse I'd lose TWO FULL BUBBLES OF XP!! That's 4 fucking hours of grinding!

I had a lot of hope for Ryzom because I really dig skill based systems (ala UO) but I couldn't get over the lack of people. This is one of those that I've resubbed (actually paid for) at least twice just to give it another go. I'll probably give it another shot sometime.

The issue isn't the value of the items but the act itself. It doesn't matter if he gave them 1 trit, it matters that a developer of the game gave them something that he did not give to EVERYONE ELSE. This simple act crossed a line between company and customer that should never, ever be crossed.

I don't know where he gets that $150 figure. I have a 7800GT, which costs about $200 right now. I'm sitting in Three Rivers Village, with about ten other players. My graphics are turned all the way down to "Highest Performance," and I'm only getting 17FPS (and that takes a dive if I try to move).

I'm using a buddy key, and I ordered the game while I was still playing in the starting areas (where there aren't many players, and I can run it on "Balanced"). Now that I see what it's really like, I'm cancelling my order. It will be a great game in about a year, once they have the graphics optimized, and the hardware needed to run it moves into the affordable range. Right now, it's only worth playing if you have a brand-new high-end system.

Read my above post. It proves that their recommended system spec is, if not completely false, at least embellished.

MCSE, MCP (Win2k Pro), SCJP 1.5, RHCT, CCNA, A+

10 years of Windows C++ development and 3 years of .NET development.

They have made a very serious mistake with this game and a LOT of people agree with us. The performance is pathetic on even GREAT systems. Here's my system:

AMD 64 3500+ oc'd to 3Ghz, 2 GB of DDR400, twin (yes 2) 10k RPM WD Raptor hdd's running RAID 0 (this is where VG is installed).

Twin (yes 2) NVidia 7800 GT OC video cards on PCIx slots running in SLI (SLI makes no difference on VG, btw).

NF4 LanParty Mobo

I spent the first 3 whole days playing with the vgclient.ini trying to get an acceptable and consistent FPS. I ended up getting 35 FPS in the fields and 20 (sometimes MUCH less) in the cities.

AND THIS IS WITH NO DAMN SOUND!  

If I turn the sound on I loose 10-15 FPS right off the top.

Here's another kicker: I *bought* an ATI x1950xtx (read: the best card ATI makes) from CompUSA just so I could see if there was a performance gain - NOTHING! (I took back the card btw).

The problem is NOT with the hardware, it is with the software, plain and simple. I feel confident in this diagnosis because this is what I do to make a living - I diagnose problems and I solve them either with code or whatever else is needed.

 It is common knowledge that people don't read legal documents. Here are a few artifacts to back up this statement:

1. When a potential landlord hands you a lease agreement he/she puts a big X where you need to sign... thus encouraging you to not read the document and just sign.

2. During the installation of Windows NT 4.0, at the EULA screen, you had to press "page down" until you reached the end of the document before you could press F8 to accept. The reason for this was simple: Microsoft's legal department could say "well, you at least scanned over the document before you accepted it".

3. I recently bought a used car in New Hampshire. After prices were agreed upon and all negotiations were completed I was handed some paperwork. There was about 20 pages of paper to sign. All with tons of legalese. I read *some* of it and signed all of it. Each place where I was to sign/initial had a little yellow Post-It arrow.

I once paid my lawyer $200 just to read a 10 page document and try to find a way for me to "work around the wording". Most of what lawyers DO is write/read legalese. It took my lawyer two hours to review those 10 pages and he's been doing it for 30 years.

Here is a standard end user license agreement. Notice, this is a template but its still 11 pages long.

Although I'm not a fan of free software I'll go ahead and state that most of it uses common licenses similar to what the OP was dreaming of. A few examples of the common licenses are GPL, LGPL, Apache, MIT, Mozilla Public License (MPL) and so on. When I'm about to install new, free, software I'll only read the license if it is one I've not heard of before (like NASA Open Source Agreement 1.3 bleck!).

I think it would be really nice if companies would start naming their licenses with versions OR if they would standardize a common NDA and end user agreement (with names like Turbine NDA 1.0 or Turbine EULA 1.0 and so on). This would allow us to read it once and only reread it if the version has changed.
