Thanks for all the feedback so far guys! I'll do my best to get in all the races (and hopefully genders) today, though I'll be switching to more vanity shots rather than the standard face/body thing. As for Keith Parkinson's art, I'm not sure of any site that still has an archive but I'll look around. Orc Male:

So my friend and I were discussing the new models earlier and realized that the current images being thrown around the web lately are mostly either a) the horrid default models or b) customized by someone who has likely never seen a naked body. Not that I mean to insult anyone by that, but really...one only needs to log into something like Second Life to see how many misshapen parodies of human anatomy can be created when you give people fairly large control over their avatar's physical form. So that said, I decided to hop onto the test server and see the new models for myself. Now just so you guys know, I'm not really a standard Vanguard player. I hop in every now and then to see how its doing and get a few levels here and there, but I'm pretty heavily invested in other games. So don't think that I'm coming here to parade Vanguard's new models or anything, I just want to present that the new models can (and do) in fact look far better (and sexier) in the hands of someone with a little aesthetic prowess. Keep in mind that everyone's opinion of beauty varies, and you may not necessarily agree with my choices for this thread, but I have tried to create these models following fairly standard High Fantasy artwork, particularly as Keith Parkinson might have envisioned it. Oh, and please excuse the fact that I have no clue how to lose the interface in Vanguard ;) I would also like to point out that there are still some flaws with these models - particularly the men, there needs to be some way to bring the chest width down a bit more, and while I understand that Vanguard does not have an animator right now, maybe they would want to borrow one from one of SOE's other games just to fix up the man's standing pose, and give it a more relaxed look than having their arms shoved out to the side. Anyway, here they are, with more to come: Human (Thestran) Male:

Warhammer's trailer was too glorified, imo. In reality, outside of maybe the squig herder being able to go inside of his pet, none of the abilities or scenarios displayed in the trailer remotely exist in the game. Tchar'zanek won't join you in your siege, you won't have moments of 1 on 1, you won't be burning people/freezing them - hell, you'll be lucky if you can even take someone down in under 30 seconds as a damage caster. The equivalent to this trailer is of course the original WoW trailer, and not the WoTLK trailer. As far as that goes, the original WoW trailer (and TBC trailer) made a point of only displaying things that the players were actually capable, and I never felt as though it had given a false sense of what the game might actually be like. The art was pretty much just a much, much better representation of what is already in the game and outside of the one tauren wielding his totem, every ability used by a player race in that trailer is taken right out of the game. As for WoTLK's trailer? I think it's about time we returned to the storytelling element of Warcraft, and I'm glad that Blizzard agrees. |

Post deleted at Ryzom staff's request to not spread this information. Please un-sticky. The client will be made publically available when the servers are open to new subscribers. |

I can't confirm anything about the keys (but I would assume that they should still work, and whatever authentication system holds the account data also holds the data for any unused keys), but I can tell you now that you will need to download a new client or change a line of data in one of the config files when they release the information about the new server ip, the client that you would install from the box (or even from Fileplanet) is using outdated connection information, and will be unable to connect to the servers to log in or even patch. My recommendation is to download the new client as soon as its available, I know there is a url floating around somewhere but I seem to have lost track of it. |

There are a few sites that still have a server status section that pings the Ryzom servers to see if they are up and running, I can't remember any of them off-hand though, I picked it up from some obscure forum thread. |

Apparently (at least on my vista x64 machine) all the downloads were corrupt, but I tried the Fileplanet one on my XP machine (haven't tried any of the others) and that extracted just fine, so I just installed and copied the files to my vista machine. The servers are up, but the authentication servers are down so they're probably still being used for restricted testing. I'm guessing when we can log in, we'll hear another announcement. |

I believe that Ryzom is strong enough to stand on its own for the players who -are- looking for something different (and lets be honest, the game will never appeal to them if they aren't), especially with all the disappointments from releases in the past year or so, and the lack of any even remotely sandbox games coming down the pipeline. The fact that the game has been shut down should be enough of a wake up call to the die-hard fans that they will take a much more proactive role this time around to advertise, educate, and encourage new players to join the game - particularly in overcoming any learning curve that will be experienced going from Silan to the mainland, which can be a pretty heavy one. As long as the new owners are able to provide support (and hopefully get into the advertising game), I do think Ryzom has the potential to make a healthy recovery, but there is no mistaking that for the first months, possibly the first year, it will rely heavily on community activism. |

Yeah, here's another "anyone know where to find a working link" thread I don't suppose anyone knows a working link for Atyscape, or could host one for the newest version? The links to packages.ryturn.org mirrors don't seem to be working anymore. |

So with Ryzom on the way back, I've been trying to get my hands on the most recent client. Fileplanet seems to be corrupt and obviously the one that used to be hosted by Ryzom's website is no longer available. I managed to find a torrent, but no one is seeding (hint hint to anyone who has it and wants to help out) - does anyone know of any mirrors with a working download of "ryzom-installer_060928.exe"? |

Thanks for the tips all, I've decided I'll try using zip strips to hold the tubes off of the RAM. If that doesn't work, I'll try some of these other suggestions ^^ |

So I just got some new RAM for my computer, it's significantly larger (taller) than my original RAM - nearly double the height. As a result, my liquid cooling tubes now touch the RAM sticks. Will the heat cause those tubes to melt, or am I safe? |

Originally posted by AtomicDog No, bashing SOE is not a conspiracy theory, but I notice that many of the bashers will turn on any SWG supporter here and call conspiracy, claiming them to be SOE puppets or moles. Here is the reality of the situation - the NGE is not going away. Not in the official form of the game. I played SWG from day one, after following the game since the rumors, back when all I had on my MMORPG plate was EverQuest. Sure, I loved the game. I also had my reservations, the sandbox was new to me. I had never played UO, and the lack of definitive content didn't sit well with me. Ultimately I got used to it, and found my own little clique in the game. But that clique wasn't for the gameplay, but the social aspect. When the holocrons were introduced, that was screwed over. When the CU was introduced, the crafters and entertainers started to vanish. The NGE was an absolute travesty, and having unlocked my Jedi just before the CU, I was pretty pissed off. I tried returning to SWG in the NGE-era multiple times over the past two+ years. This in the midst of toying around with WoW, returning to AO, and trying anything and everything that was released between then and now. As much as I might have hated WoW, SWG was long gone and I had no intentions of returning. On a whim over the summer, I picked up a time card and took yet another trip back to SWG. This time around I took some time to fool with the keymaps and the camera, and managed to get the game to play much like the Pre-CU/CU. I'm not a fan of the classes, the lack of alpha status, or the lack of decay. I'm not a fan of levels. I think that the abilities of the professions are limited in scope, and that there is much more potential that isn't being tapped, but that has always been the story of SWG for me. In spite of what I might dislike, the fact that each class has a role means that the developers are capable of, and -have- introduced definitive content, and I dare say its more interesting than anything I've played in WoW. At the same time, its still the SWG I know and love in terms of base features. Are there population issues? Absolutely. I personally don't see them on a day to day basis because I am a resident of Starsider, but part of the issue with those population issues is the sheer unwillingness of the veterans who are cemented into their belief that SWG is gone, and SOE is the devil incarnate. I've brought about 10 or so veterans from the pre-CU era that I used to play with back into the game, and they've been loving it. The truth is that while the game has changed, its still SWG. It still has sandbox elements, non-combat classes that continue to be viable (although in different ways than before), and the current development team is miles above anything the game has had before. WoW might have more polish, but in SWG I can still claim my property, I can build my city, I can start my business, I can host my events, and I can explore the vast wilderness. I can do whatever I want to do, and the only difference now is that I'm limited within a singular class choice, and a level range. Really, its not such a big deal. I understand the frustration with the NGE, I understand the hatred for SOE. I know what it's like to put the $ in there, I played during the EQ Legends Server era after all. The game we all knew and loved still exists though, just with some minor modifications. For the losses we've experienced, there is also gain. Perhaps its not equal, but it is slowly reaching that point. Is it wrong for SOE to market old features that were removed as new? Absolutely. But I think that the vision is far too one-sided. While the marketing is wrong, the fact is that these features -are- being reintroduced. Its been recognized that they are what made SWG strong, and their presence keeps the game strong. The continued support of the dev team for those features makes it stronger. You don't think SOE knows that they messed up? We might never hear the apology out of Smedley's mouth (who, by the way, remains president of the Company as far as I've been able to gather - and just answers to a new boss), but the progress of the game is in a direction that tells us that neither form of the game was correct, neither pre-CU nor NGE...but a combination of the elements of both has turned SWG into something that, aside from those few issues I might have, I find more interesting and engaging than either the pre-CU or the early NGE. You may now proceed to have a revelation, or the much more likely event of claims that I'm the Devil's Advocate, complete with a trail of fire and brimstone at my feet. |
