There is an irc channel and a web client on the site.  The web client is a little fragile and it's easy to click away and have to reload.  That happened to me several times to the amusement of the channel. :p  They seem to be a very friendly group and welcoming of newbs and visitors.

They are using a Selective Multi-player setup.  Its hard for me to explain all the ways you can play the game.  I'd recommend just checking out the main site for how it will work.

Basically, when you play online your going to be participating with a pool of players (Friends, PVPers, Guild Mates) People you have selected.   You won't see all 10,000 people on one server, maybe a few hundred with the same likes as yourself.   Villages, Towns and Cities will always remain on SotA servers.  So when you enter those areas, player houses in a specific town will always be there when you log in to it.

I believe Star Citizen is following a similar concept.

In addition to being playable as a single player offline game, SotA is expected to have three unique network play styles:[2]

  • Single Player Online (SPO)
  • Friend Party Online (FPO)
  • Open Play Online (OPO)

Single Player Online (SPO) mode allows the user to receive updated content whilst exploring the world without external user interaction. Players in this mode will be able to see content from other players, such as houses and vendors, but will not be shown interaction options with other player characters. Friend Party Online (FPO) allows for the user to elect to see players the person is familiar (i.e. 'friends'), or other individuals they have explicitly stated they wish to share game-space. Open Play Online is similar to a traditional MMORPG model, but a ranking system is used to display any and all relevant player character options to each individual user. The details of this ranking system are not yet made public, but has been described as showing 'dozens to maybe hundreds' of external actors in the player game-space.

Players may play from any computer if they elect an online mode of play, suggesting that their character information will be hosted by Portalarium. Offline single player modes will not have this feature, nor will offline characters be allowed to switch to online modes of play. Online modes of play can be switched from SPO, FPO, and OPO anytime a player is within a settlement such as a village, town, or city. These options will not be available whilst a player is within an instance or active content.[3]

Additionally, players utilising the online modes of play will be able to participate in player to player transactions, group finding, patching, streaming of dynamic content, and exploit prevention.[2]

Yes is has WASD movement.

I've been a backer since the kickstarter and I'm very pleased with the progress.  One other factor is the interaction between the Developers and the community.  No other game has made as much effort to include the community.  Weekly live dev chats and an Artistic Show (Pen of the Avatar) really makes you feel like your part of the creation process.

The entire staff at Portalarium are top notch and ooze class.   Community liaison Firelotus gives 100% to reply to emails and help with any technical issues.  Its not only about a game, but about the bond you start to form with the Developer Team.  This is probably the main factor that got me to pledge at a high level.

The Demo really highlights the effort to make a unique gaming experience and avoid the term "clone" being applied to its description.

One word to describe the game.......Different.

**** Just go to   and watch the videos.  They put out some more of the demo with a developer chat.

Well I spent 2800 gems on keys because of course all i had were chests.  Opend up about 40 and got no weapon skins.  I feel cheated to be honest.  Your better off trading in the gems for gold and buying the skins from someone else.  What a wasted and now I have a bad taste in my mouth.  I was so excited about the event and now I just feel horrible.  Oh well right?

I think the info was spot on .  The main thing you should take from this, the questing / leveling seems to go by effortlessly.  You really don't feel a grind like you do in most games.  Plus you can gain xp from the warzones as well.

Hey guys,

I'd like to provide a little clarification as to why we have locked a recent post (and will continue to lock posts along the same vein) as the thread asking if should remove Star Wars: The Old Republic from its game list. The simple fact is, if it is on our game list, it has met our criteria for being an "MMOG" and that's that. So as far as is concerned, Star Wars: The Old Republic is an MMOG.

Now, with that said, you are more than welcome to discuss and debate whether or not Star Wars: The Old Republic will resemble what is traditionally known as an MMORPG, but we are not going to entertain threads that posit this question simply to troll these forums and incite a reaction from users here looking forward to the game.

In fact,  in the interest of avoiding clutter, all discussions pertaining to whether or not Star Wars: The Old Republic is a traditional MMOG or not should be directed to this thread and this thread alone going forward.

Thanks for your understanding!

Thats from MikeB, if you have reasons to believe it's a single player game take it up with Mike. Otherwise can we leave it be and talk about the differences between SWG and SWTOR and not the massive of the game.

I agree that it shouldn't be removed from your list.  But if people are questioning its status on the list, doesn't that say something about the game?  Its a MMO but not much of one..

Incorrect. Please read the faq or the feature list. Thanks.

No, I am correct.  Not one of my friends (100's that play varying MMO's for the past 13 yrs) believe this game to be more than a single player story.  I'm not sure if any of them are gonna even try it, very sad but true.

Saying you are 'correct' and offering nothing to back it up other than 'my 100s of friends!' is going to convince no one.

At this point, I think you are trolling.

Put up some evidence to the contrary if you have something otherwise, you come across as someone who is just pulling facts out of thin air.

By the way, there is a sticky regarding this topic, so read it.

Honestly, i'm not going to list everything we spoken about countless hours in vent, via icq etc.  Based on all the videos, information they have released and updates, our conclusion is that this game has serious issues when it comes to producing an open world where you need to be in a group or guild to achieve goals.

The guilds i'm in see no reason to start a guild in this game.  Simple as that. If I don't need friends to help with content or progress in the game, then its just a single player game charging a monthly fee for content.  I honestly don't have one gamer friend looking forward to this game.

that would be way better than the pong joke.

i hit most rift topics, regardlessof the title. so maybe you should work more at making the community 'not' look like 12 year old douchebags.

Perhaps this is the best post yet.  Do you really need to do a detailed analysis of another WOW clone?  Why waste the time?  The original poster hit the nail right on the head.  I agree with all his points :)

You forgot Ultima Online

This game looks worse each time news is released on it.  My hype meter is down to 0.5 now

Just returned to UO this summer and loving it.  Ultima Online is the game to play for a real MMO world.  The only other game I would consider is EVE.

These are the best 2 virtual online games.  The rest are junk.

Start up in UO is easy, not difficult as listed here.  There are plenty of websites that give you all the info you need., and you can find 3rd party programs to assist you (uoassist, uocartographer, list goes on and on)

Remember, this game has been around for 12 yrs.  The community is very dedicated.

Make your toon and in the starter town you will find gear on the ground you can pickup.   They have starter quests to help you gain skills quickly.   ASK random people for help.  Say your new to UO.  When you find the right person, you won't believe the help you'll get.  Gear, gold, suggestions on guilds.  They have a new chat system too.  You can ask for help in the different channels.  '=

For PVM, you don't need uber gear to be successful.  Gold is easy to come by and you be able to earn enough within a week to get yourself a nice house to start off in.

***** If you need any advice or want to try UO, do not hesitate to ask me via a PM.  I play on the Chesapeake server and will help anyone from this site contacting me to get started in UO.   I'll get you gold, gear, whatever it takes to make you feel comfortable.

I know right , LOL.  Everytime I get an email update about the game, my doubt increases 10 fold.  This game is gonna be utter garbage.

Think single player game your gonna pay monthly for.  Great for business !!

Tell you what: I am currently playing UO back on the official shards, after playing for years on Freeshard Defiance.

Even in its CURRENT state, UO still beats every other MMO I tried (which were quite a lot). That throws a very sad picture on todays MMO-market.

Your right.  I quit UO for long time because of Trammel.  But you know what?  I'm back for good.  I played all the new MMO's from SWG to LOTRO and this game still has the most freedom and best character development.  Sure it has all this fancy new gear etc., but you can easily adapt to it.

Tons of Content

Still has some PVP, you can still be a murderer

IDOCS still exist (Fel ones offer PVP)

Skill based system.  Far superior to the level grind

Housing that lets you do anything you want.

Rares, True Rares, Collectibles still exist.  Right now i'm trying to track down my old Whispering Rose.

History.  Some of the old towns and players still roam the lands.  You can still talk about old times, which none of these new MMO's can compare with.

Great interaction with the development team.  LIve events each month.  Meetings with game developers and they are even helping us setup the community by linking player towns

Crafting 2nd to none.

All the above puts UO back on top for me.  Trust me, I was just as upset with all the changes as you were.  However, most those changes are part of all the new MMO's.  The NEW MMO"s dont have what I listed above and thats what makes the difference.  Find an MMO with everything UO offers RIGHT NOW !!  (Early SWG was the only game I found to compete with UO)

I"m hooked again.   I started a player town, got involved with other community members and we are shaping our world.

So say what you want, this game still has the top spot in my eyes.  You can sit on the sideline and rip the coach or get on the field and make a difference.  I don't care about the graphics.  The game mechanics are what matter to me.

Take Care

I just gave up on these new MMO's and went back to UO.  I like the freedom to do what I want.

I 100% agree with Garrett's view.  This has to be the best post i've read on this site.  How come Ultima Online, which had no level grind or huge quest system, did so well? It was the players and community providing the content.  Whether you ran a player run town, potion vendor or worked at the brit forge getting tips for repairing armor and weapons.

The community was more important.  Not kill 20 this and deliver 20 of these.   All these quests and leveling just funnels people through the game without really allowing for interaction between players.

Say what you want, but every MMO since Ultima Online has taken a step back and thats why i'm back in UO.

Isn't it great to know that the OP here has used his infinite wisdom to define what an MMO is for the rest of us.  Now it's time for us all to fall in line!

I'll do it too.

A MMORPG is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.  To understand what this means, we need to understand what a RPG is:

A RPG is a game that allows and encourages a player to create and define a character's story within a game's environment.

So a MMORPG must be a game that allows and encourages players to tell their character's story to other players within a game's environment.  Ask yourself what's the point of playing with other human beings if you're not going to interact with them?  If this is the case then you could easily replace other players with NPCs and get the same results...  So make an RPG and save your customers a monthly sub.

Also, understand that there is more than one story being told at any given time in a MMORPG - Your own story (as an individual),  a group story (groups, friends, guilds, towns, factions, etc.), and the full game environments story (the total shared history of all the players in the games environment)

The problem with the newer MMORPGs is that they are quickly removing the elements that allow and encourage players to have and make their characters unique to the point that another player will be interested.

Think about this:  if every player is funneled thru the same quests and they share the exact same story how will you be able to find somebody that will want to hear your story when the story is far too common?  So the question becomes:  will SW:TORs class story arcs and individual stories be enough to encourage other players to tell or listen to each others stories?  Will the game have enough RPG toys and tools to allow us to make our characters unique enough that we can generate a public interest?

The OP seems to have his doubts about it and to be honest so do I.

Nice write up.  The best MMO's i've played were early Ultima Online and early SWG.

You could shape your characters skills into anything you wanted.

SWG example:  Smuggler / Pistoleer / Weaponsmith

Ultima Online :  Swords / Mining / Blacksmith / Magery / Tactics / Healing / Anatomry

The diversity was 2nd to none.

In both games, you had the freedom to setup player run towns/cities.  These areas had history and lore behind them.  One town might have good crafters, another a nice tavern or meeting location.  Players could hold player run events.  Auctions, homemade quests, set up battles with neighboring towns etc.  The community was able to add its own content when the developers content went dry.

Player made items were it !!  You didnt have all this fancy loot.  Crafters had meaning and a place in the game.

When I worked at the Brit Forge in UO, people knew my name, they trusted me to repairs their weapons and armor.  I was able to make a name for myself.  Hell , I returned to UO after a few yrs and people still stopped to ask me if I was the same smith that made them armor all those yrs ago.

In SWG I had one of the best Weapon Shops on the server.  People would ask for my ICQ to put in orders.  You knew which crafters had the best shop and wares.

I never felt important as a crafter after those 2 experiences.   Dont forget you could make furniture, decor, clothing, armor, weapons, food, musical instruments and so on.

In SWG, before Jedi, there was always battles between Anchorhead and Bestine (Rebels vs the Empire)  We loved the raids.  You would also have Empire  player run cities invade Rebel player run cities.

UO: Hell, it was a free for all.  You never knew if the person you ran into was friend or foe.  It was so exciting.  Guilds were vital to survival.  One of the best skill based PVP games.  Not gear based.

It wasn't as immersive as the MMO's of today.  You didnt have quests to grind out levels or instanced raids, but I never seemed to care.  You would  do the PVE to get thing for your crafter or minor gear that could help.  Not uber loot, but decent enough to make it interesting.  The gear wouldnt put a crafter out of business.

These 2 games allowed the community to be the focus of the online world.  I haven't felt that same community interaction in most of the MMO's i've tried since.   This game looks great as an RPG, but I have major doubts it will truly be world where we will have a solid ingame community.  I just don't see it happening.

I play MMO's to interact with other people.  Whether they want to be evil or good in the game, it doesnt matter.  I like the versatility. But if everyone is in instances or grinding levels or doing the same quests...... then I don't see much time for community interaction and building.  I've noticed that in alot of MMO's.

In LOTRO, my guild friends were the only people I needed to know or interact with.  Heck there could have been just the 20 of us on the server and I wouldnt have noticed one bit.  The games really feel empty when all the content is hand fed to you.  Go from point A to point B.  Kill this guy , deliver this item etc.  Its not free and open for us to shape.

I'm back playing Ultima Online again.   It is great visiting the old player towns that still exist and seeing players I met over 10 yrs ago still playing.  We talk old times and they help me catch up on the changes.  Very friendly and helpful community, its always been.

To me, all the above makes me want to play an MMO.  Now if you have never experienced UO of early SWG, then you might have a different view.  Maybe you like quest / level grinding.  Hey, maybe thats what you like and thats fine with me.  But just maybe, a free and open game would really enhance your online gaming experience, like it did for me.

I hope you all enjoy this game but its probably not gonna be my cup of tea.  I'll keep an eye on things and keep an open mind, but I have my doubts as well.

Everyone gets to be Capt Kirk.  How stupid and lame.  Like everyone gets to be a Jedi, remember that one?

Just garbage.
