It is one thing to try and sway the avid fanbase of the various avatar games over the years into purchasing virtual (see pixy dust) space to place a house in a semi-protected area of an online community that has not happened yet. It's another to try and now tell new people that are interested that "hey....better pay now or you will not have a home since they are limited" which only adds to this pixy dust house of cards.

 

I am not saying that the game itself will be good or bad. Just that there are alot of people in real life spending LITERALLY THOUSANDS of DOLLARS to have a house (pixy dust) in a virtual world. 

 

Where has common sense gone? Seriously......ugh.  I am a fan of UO and played it for several years, but I will be the last to throw my hard earned money into developing any game unless they will be splitting the profit with me.

 

Oh they are not splitting the profit with people that have invested 3K into the game? hmm well at least you get a pixy dust house :P

I was a fan in the old days but have realised he is just trying to achieve what Chris Roberts has done with the SC game and for me he's not even close to the mark and I have not and will not support this game as I feel he's way off the mark with this game and it looks horrid and IMO it will fail because he's not got the talent to pull this off.

Chris Roberts has set a president by what he has done and everyone else feels they can do the same, but you need the ability and talent to do this and again IMO he cannot compete and this is just to fill his pockets to allow us to subsidise his dreams as he's unable to finance it through other means as others have seen what he has to offer is pants...

 

SC has the advantage of being part of a less used Genre.   Not many space MMO's / worlds.   Swords, shields and orc have been used to death.  Even I wasn't sure about backing another D&D based game again.  It was much easier for me to back SC just because it involved something different (space ships lol).

Really don't know what else to say.  

There isn't 50-75 mil in funding to make UO2 and provide housing to everyone.  

It was known from the beginning of kickstarter that housing would be rare and at a premium.

Housing was used as a source of fundraising.   Good or bad idea?  That is what they went with.  No way to change that or go back on that choice.  

If housing is your main concern (and your not willing to wait for more housing options), then don't pledge.  If you are more interested in the story, lore, crafting, PvE, PvP, old school conversation system or some other  aspect of gameplay (and like what you see), then pledge based on that. 

24,000 houses on multiple servers is not gonna happen with 2.5 mil in funding.  Do any of you know how much an MMO costs to produce these days?  Have to be realistic here.

Sadly you are way off, Star Citizen Ships are just ships that can be gained in game by ANYONE with in game resources. Buying the ships prior to launch allows the following...

 

- you can play with the ship at launch

- your investment gives you insurance that you can also buy in game as well

- everything in star citizen (EVERYTHING) can be gained by just playing the game.

 

So why I can see why one might "think" it's the same , it is not. Anyone can buy the 30.00 ship and get everything others will start with that paid more , you are at that point just buying the game.

All items again can be gotten in game by playing and nothing more is needed no real cash ever! You can however use a store and do so if you wish but only for cosmetic items which can also be gained by currency made in game. So the differance there is there is no "cash only" option for Star Citzen in any aspect of the game. There is "when it launches" an option again to use real life cash for cosmetics, but you never have to and if you don't it doesn't mean you can never get them unlike other games where it's cash only for certain cosmetics, SC will never have this.

I Just want to clear this up that only 2 other games I know in development are going with this "Real cash only " concept ... Power Monger and Pathfinder.

I meant that it would be difficult to earn that ship in game, it will be rare just like housing.  However, u can earn housing in SotA as well. I believe neither game is pay to win (as a backer for both)

If housing is such an issue for people, go play Housing Online or something.  Owning property is not a majority of the content.   Housing is their fundraising plan.  Did they have other options?  I don't know what was discussed during the creation process, but that is what they have gone for. 

Housing is rare just like a $1000 ship in star citizen.  I may never own a plot of land or that mega ship, but it won't stop me from playing the game. I'll just explore with my Aurora or live out of an Inn.

Sorry, but I'm also of the opinion that home ownership is a near-essential part of games like this.

I wouldn't mind so much about land being sold for real cash if it were just certain high-demand areas such as waterfronts, big city suburbs, etc. However with land being a finite resource and every single parcel available for RL cash, they're essentially locking people out of a chunk of content from the get-go because they're not wealthy enough IRL to pay for it. To me, this is absolutely inexcusable. I didn't contribute to this game for some pay-to-win cash grab, I contributed because I wanted a worthy successor to the Ultima series.

If this decision isn't reversed, then I will be contacting the appropriate parties to have my contribution refunded. This isn't what I signed up for, and sure as hell isn't the kind of garbage I want to support.

Get a clue.  They can not afford 24,000 houses.  They don't have the funding to support the servers or required resources.  Star Citizen has 19 mil vs 2.5 for SotA..

Anyone can own a house (via in game currency), its just very rare.  Just like that $1000 ship.  Good luck earning that in SC.  As a backer of SC, I don't have any issues with them offering 1k ships.  It supports the game.  Why can't people see housing in SotA the same way?

A house / plot of land is not needed to play the game.  Its just extra fluff.  You can decorate it, place trophies in it, meet with friends or craft from within your house (instead of using a public crafting station).  

You are basically paying for convenience.  They have said that you will be able to friend others to your house as well, for friends that couldn't afford to purchase their own.

Why have limited housing at a premium?  Kind of like star citizen selling $1000 ships.  They have decided to use it as a main source of crowd funding.  If someone wants to pledge $10,000 for a castle, fine with me.  It gets the game developed, improves the game and I can just reap the benefits of increased funding entering the game.  

If housing is breaking point for you, then I can understand if you would be turned off by this avenue of crowd funding.  However, housing and owning a plot is not the main source of content of the game.  There are tons of MMO's that do not offer housing of any kind, just a bank or cargo hold  

Each house they render costs money and time.  I remember reading that in Star Citizen, some ships cost $35,000 to render.  They hope to make that back with some added profit to put back into the game.

The overall main objective is to get funds into the game.   

If for instance they only offered a $30 pledge tier at launch, without any higher tiers (housing etc) X 24,000 backers = about 750k.   250k short of the 1mil needed to fund the project.  Hence, the game would never gone to development and we would have no new game to look forward to.  

The higher tiers and housing have helped fund this game.  Not everyone will be able to own a house, but this game is not an MMO about owning a house and decorating it.  Its about exploring and adventuring in a new land created by Richard Garriott. 

How many adventurers are just gonna sit in their house all day?  Its not gonna be the main focus.   

Plus, as the game progresses, more land will open up and more room for housing with it as well.

They are using a Selective Multi-player setup.  Its hard for me to explain all the ways you can play the game.  I'd recommend just checking out the main site for how it will work. 

Basically, when you play online your going to be participating with a pool of players (Friends, PVPers, Guild Mates) People you have selected.   You won't see all 10,000 people on one server, maybe a few hundred with the same likes as yourself.   Villages, Towns and Cities will always remain on SotA servers.  So when you enter those areas, player houses in a specific town will always be there when you log in to it.

I believe Star Citizen is following a similar concept. 

In addition to being playable as a single player offline game, SotA is expected to have three unique network play styles:[2]

  • Single Player Online (SPO)
  • Friend Party Online (FPO)
  • Open Play Online (OPO)

Single Player Online (SPO) mode allows the user to receive updated content whilst exploring the world without external user interaction. Players in this mode will be able to see content from other players, such as houses and vendors, but will not be shown interaction options with other player characters. Friend Party Online (FPO) allows for the user to elect to see players the person is familiar (i.e. 'friends'), or other individuals they have explicitly stated they wish to share game-space. Open Play Online is similar to a traditional MMORPG model, but a ranking system is used to display any and all relevant player character options to each individual user. The details of this ranking system are not yet made public, but has been described as showing 'dozens to maybe hundreds' of external actors in the player game-space.

Players may play from any computer if they elect an online mode of play, suggesting that their character information will be hosted by Portalarium. Offline single player modes will not have this feature, nor will offline characters be allowed to switch to online modes of play. Online modes of play can be switched from SPO, FPO, and OPO anytime a player is within a settlement such as a village, town, or city. These options will not be available whilst a player is within an instance or active content.[3]

Additionally, players utilising the online modes of play will be able to participate in player to player transactions, group finding, patching, streaming of dynamic content, and exploit prevention.[2]

Yes is has WASD movement.

I've been a backer since the kickstarter and I'm very pleased with the progress.  One other factor is the interaction between the Developers and the community.  No other game has made as much effort to include the community.  Weekly live dev chats and an Artistic Show (Pen of the Avatar) really makes you feel like your part of the creation process.

The entire staff at Portalarium are top notch and ooze class.   Community liaison Firelotus gives 100% to reply to emails and help with any technical issues.  Its not only about a game, but about the bond you start to form with the Developer Team.  This is probably the main factor that got me to pledge at a high level. 

The Demo really highlights the effort to make a unique gaming experience and avoid the term "clone" being applied to its description.

 

One word to describe the game.......Different.

Well I spent 2800 gems on keys because of course all i had were chests.  Opend up about 40 and got no weapon skins.  I feel cheated to be honest.  Your better off trading in the gems for gold and buying the skins from someone else.  What a wasted and now I have a bad taste in my mouth.  I was so excited about the event and now I just feel horrible.  Oh well right? 

I think the info was spot on .  The main thing you should take from this, the questing / leveling seems to go by effortlessly.  You really don't feel a grind like you do in most games.  Plus you can gain xp from the warzones as well.

Thats from MikeB, if you have reasons to believe it's a single player game take it up with Mike. Otherwise can we leave it be and talk about the differences between SWG and SWTOR and not the massive of the game.

I agree that it shouldn't be removed from your list.  But if people are questioning its status on the list, doesn't that say something about the game?  Its a MMO but not much of one..

Saying you are 'correct' and offering nothing to back it up other than 'my 100s of friends!' is going to convince no one.

Honestly, i'm not going to list everything we spoken about countless hours in vent, via icq etc.  Based on all the videos, information they have released and updates, our conclusion is that this game has serious issues when it comes to producing an open world where you need to be in a group or guild to achieve goals.  

The guilds i'm in see no reason to start a guild in this game.  Simple as that. If I don't need friends to help with content or progress in the game, then its just a single player game charging a monthly fee for content.  I honestly don't have one gamer friend looking forward to this game.

Perhaps this is the best post yet.  Do you really need to do a detailed analysis of another WOW clone?  Why waste the time?  The original poster hit the nail right on the head.  I agree with all his points :)
