50% of backers want to run their own Shards (like free UO servers).  In fact, some companies that run UO shards want to migrate to Shards Online and use their setup.  The people will have the skills to shape the world, run events, set up almost anything

50% of backers will play Citadel's own shards.  Those will be subscription based, but lower priced than current MMOs.  These servers will be Moderated by Citadel and their staff directly.  So expect content like Maginica being destroyed.  Draconi manufactured that event in UO.  I'm sure they will run tons of live events as well.

So there will be more options.

I felt the graphics and gameplay were smooth.  The UI and combat bar were unique.  Watch the combat video explaining the main skills on the left, the stances in the middle and spells on the right.

Movement is mouse controlled, similar to UO.

To me, its what maybe UO2 could have been like.

This week they should go over their crafting and thievery ideas too.

I agree, right now we just have PvP and combat setup, but for an alpha not even a finished KS, thats pretty cool.  They went with combat and PvP first because thats the hardest to get right and balance.  The other features will follow.

Do you have any other questions?  Have you read the entire KS page? Should be more info there for you to digest.

What that UO feel but with upgraded mechanics ?  Shards is your game.   I played in the Battle of the Backers 2 last night and it was the most fun i've had in a game in awhile.

They have started with PvP and combat, but more features will be stressed during the last week of Kickstarer (Crafting, thievery, housing).

So keep an eye out.  I pledged this week and hope it gets funded.

Check out the Shards Online Forum here at for more links to events and news.

I back this game !! hahah

I think the combat UI is unique.  You have some combat skills on the left side.  Some only trigger during an encounter.  Then you have 3 diff stance centered in the UI bar.  You can use TAB to switch between them and the stance your in determines the 4 skill on the left side of the.

On the right, thats where spells go.  Right now there are 3 you can learn and unlock.  Once you find a scroll you click it to learn it.  You can also precast and wait to use it.

Really cool !

2 Hrs till Q&A

Good news! There isn't an NDA and there are tons of screenshots floating around :)

Anyone is allowed to take screenshots from our streams and use the ones on Kickstarter and our presskit so long as the "Pre-Alpha Version" logo stays visible. You might also check our subreddit for some great shots. RelExpo and DustymacD have both taken some fantastic screenshots for their blogs.

I'll grab some today, but please feel free to use shots that you like.

Thanks !

Just backed !

Thank you Citadel for developing a game that brings back that UO feel !

I agree that it is a bit too early to judge the game fully since it is still in early development. On the other hand I also have to agree that it probably is mainly funded by die-hard Ultima fans. I admit I also funded it (little, but anyway) due to reminiscing of Ultimas and UO. And I also admit that so far when I logged on I was like "meh, can't be bothered". *shrugs* live and learn. And wait hoping for time to tell its (positive)  tale.

Yeah I mean Im not trying to bash the game as a whole, I just think its incredible that such a small development team and such a rough design can garner 4 million on name recognition alone.

But hey it could turn out to be decent, I just want to see more.

O and I did check out more of the crafting and it seems to have a bit more depth than I originally saw from the first video, but I dont exactly know if House building and crafting are one in the same.

Aye, totally understand where you are coming from.  You have a game like Shards Online that is more polished, being offered in a playable state at the end of their kickstarter and resembles UO more than SotA.  Yet, the game is struggling to get funded during their current KS.   Baffling really.

Shards obviously put up a good chunk of $$$ before even stating their Kickstarter, I hope they raise enough to continue.

To me most people play games for end game grind and that is cause most players have only ever done this one thing in end game they have not had the fun of just doing your own thing so they think if a game has no gear or some kind of path progression that the games lame or boring because all they know is what has become the norm in mmo's and that is gear grind for the best gear to do the next big thing the companies add to there game which is always a raid or dungeon that requires the top gear. GW2 did away with the need for top tier gear to play the max level content and instead made everything more equal across the board. The gear in GW2 is not that hard to get and once you do it becomes more clear that even with assended gear you do not get any better then when you had exotic I know I have full exotic on some of my characters and do not see the difference in it in any way other then Fractuals which A-net them selves said they put in for hard core players and I did that up to level 30 before I started to get assended gear and putting the mods for Agony resist. That is all Assended gear is really for anyway is to help you get more agony resist for fractuals.

Excellent !  I totally agree.  Most people started with an MMO (WOW etc) that had quest after quest and gear as the carrot on the stick.  It was a linear way to develop your character without much freedom.

I started with Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies.  Both gave you tremendous freedom to play how you wanted.

I had a debate with a person on the Shroud of the Avatar main forums about this same issue.  I proposed to make the gear like UO, (simple without drastic gear progression).  Well, he was so used to WOW and getting the next great sword, he believed my idea was boring.  He said he only plays to get the next great weapon or armor.

So he plays like a drone, just following a linear path in progression.  He liked having his hand held as he played and didn't quite understand what sandbox or freedom to play meant.

Hey, for some people, thats what they enjoy.  The hours and hours of raiding hoping for that "1" drop.  I myself, I can't do that anymore.  Too time consuming and I see it as a waste of time.  You end up just worrying too much about gear and drops and don't enjoy everything the game has to offer.   This leads players to only participate in content that improves their character's stats / gear and they begin to ignore : exploration, crafting, role playing and a slew of other content because those aspects of the game do not improve their gear directly.

This also leads those same people to only seek out guilds or players that are geared well enough to help them reach that elite status.  In SWG, I witnessed so many guilds that split because some members weren't as well geared for high end PvP or PvE.  They end up leaving good friends to succeed at the top level just because of  gear.

GW2 is much more forgiving in this aspect.  The gear is not crucial to participating, in most instances, only your skill and ability to communicate with your guild mates during events matters.

It's the best casual MMO out there, it looks great, no rush, no building your life around a game. Perfect for a working person with a family who can only afford to spend so much time on a game. Just leveled my 8th toon to 80, did some sPvP, some WvW solo or just follow the zerg for brainless fun.

I don't need raids, being standby just for a chance to be in the raid, so you can get the DKP's to be eligable for some gear that just might drop, at least if nobody ninjas it and subsequently gets kicked from the guild only to join another guild and get his shinies faster than you. The next tier of gear is just around the corner anyway, why bother?

I don't need all the drama, just looking for a good time, and GW2 is the ticket for me.

Spot on !  Exactly my thinking.

Glad you enjoy the game.

I'm on disability right now following surgery and I've been scrambling around trying to find something to pass the time with.

I just can't get into GW2. I log in, kill a few NPC's, and then find myself wondering what I'm doing and why. Maybe I need a Guild and people to play with. I feel like that's what's missing.

I'm with you. I don't mean any ill will toward the game, but it just is like the thing has no anima. I log in and within 20 minutes I'm off and playing something else.

Yea, I know what you mean.  There isn't really much direction.  No next gear tier etc.   No carrot on the stick.

I'm sorta playing it as a sandbox game.  Kind of do whatever I want.   Its funny, but because there is no major endgame or continuous quest line, I find myself just having fun leveling new toons and ,dare to say, working on their cosmetics lol.

Its actually quite refreshing because I feel no pressure to grind or do the same dungeons over and over again for a drop.

I enjoy just exploring the lands, visiting the vistas and trying to complete all the jumping puzzles.

So without direction, what am I doing?

I'm trying to learn 6 different character classes.  Become better at playing them and perfecting builds that I enjoy playing while making them more effective.

I keep trying to amass gold to buy the equipment for different builds to test.

Also, love exploring everything and even enjoy some of the story lines of the different races.

I think the issue most people have with MMO's is the gear grind. If you take that away, they forget to just enjoy the world.  For me, the gear grind had finally started me turning me off from games.   Remove that grind and now i'm actually enjoying my gaming experience more.

But I totally understand your view.

Also agree, should of replied here before starting my own thread about how GW2 has improved.  When you try out all the newer MMO's , you start to realize how good GW2 is.

The new April 15th patch has been outstanding for the game.

Anyway, I started a thread praising GW2 just a bit ago, so i'll stop now lol. it.   Wish I never took a break from the game.

Graphics are always down to personal taste, but GW2 looks better than any other MMO i've ever played.  The art and environment just click with me.

How GW2 has developed over the past yr?  As a returning player, the story arc with new content and events coming in every few weeks has been outstanding.

I don't know how, but I enjoy the PvE in this more than MMO's focusing more on PvE.   You just have 1 quest line to follow, sick of having 30 quests listed on the right side of my UI.

The races give you multiple starting zones and if you don't like one, you can just jump into a different one because they are lvl 1-15.

I enjoy trying to complete zones (POI, Vistas, Heart Quests (varying things to do, not just kill 10 of this etc), Jumping Puzzles) and then you have those dynamic events that pop up and everyone works together to complete them.  Dailies are cool and I like how they change up the requirements daily.

Haven't been back to PvP since the beginning, but once I settle with my new guild I plan on partaking in it again.

Why write this?  I don't know, figured I'd give props to the game.  ESO, Wildstar, SWTOR and a slew of other MMO's have been so disappointing, that I really didn't realize how great GW2 was till I returned to it.

But there is one main reason this game has probably appealed to me, ease of play.   I'm an older gamer, family etc and my job requires a lot of my time.   GW2 is great for my casual play.  I just log in , do a daily, LFG a dungeon, do some champs, work on map completion or try and complete the living world events.

The combat can I put it...easy but complex ?   There aren't 30 skills to worry about but the weapon swamping, trait setup , utility skills and combos really give you enough tactical variations to make it interesting.  Plus, the combat is very fast moving, I love rushing into battle , hack and slash, and then dodging to safety.  It really flows nicely.

Kind of funny, I returned after a yr and didn't even have to worry about upgrading my gear.  I could just get back to playing and doing content.  Now some love the gear grind thing, but I don't have time for that anymore.

GW2 is the perfect MMO for casual gamers.  Hardcore 20 man raid dungeons, maybe not, but for me, its a perfect balance.

Cheers all.

The more money you have real life the more you can "invest" and the better off you get when the "game" starts.

That is your version of game balance?

Why do you bother posting anymore?  Yes , the game won't be UO2 and housing, a major feature of the game, a lot of people can't afford.

Game is already being slammed, in the SotA forums, by backers, for all types of issues.   You aren't really adding much lol.

Just don't get it, you just waste your time posting here.

I don't know, I just re-subbed UO for $13.77 and I can place house easily.   Much better deal :)

Plus the architecture of housing in UO (not customs of some lol) is nicer.

Well the combat system should be perfected 1st.  You can setup ways to PvP all you want, but if the Card Trick Combat sucks, which it probably will, then you won't want to PvP.

I would have set the combat system up 1st, get it to play well , then talk about ways of implementing it into PvE or PvP.

And to talk about PvP 10 months in was probably a bad idea, stringing people along and then...boom !! this is our thinking after 10 months of crowd funding lol.
