General: Dana Massey: Why Not Well Animated MMOs?
News Discussion « General Discussion 5/18/09 4:56:12 AM
Very valid point.. Animation to me is as, if not more, important as graphics.. It is a major deciding factor when I decide to play a game.. Combat animation is probably the most paramount, especcially in 3rd person MMO's.. |

So you think that GM having a debate about the actions of other GM's is time best spent? Honestly, I dont blame this guy for cutting the conversation short, hes just trying to do his job. You shouldnt petition this shit, it clogs up the petition queue and makes people with genuine problems wait longer. Dont agree with the name policy? Make a thread on the official forums, maybe enough people will reply to garner interest from Funcom supervisors. Which is besides the point really, if you give your name a unique and completely unoffensive name, you dont have to worry about this shit. |

Memory is the same. GFX card is the same. PSU looks fine, if you want to go with that. |

I agree. The whole point of playing on the internet is to interact with people from different places. They say its due to new Billing/Tax laws. But all they need to do for that is have two departments. They say its due to lagg. Ive played US servers for 4 years, I never had serious lagg. They say its to help people find guilds in their timezones. Which they should letus be the judge of that. On the whole, I think its taking MMO's backwards. |

Do you Really Hate? What is Your Definition? Thanks Donjn
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 7/09/08 7:39:26 AM
My hate for SoE is something that has built up over successive MMO's and experiences with SoE. Ive played all their titles, EQ, EQ2, Planetside, Star Wars Galaxies, The Matrix Online and Vanguard, so I have a wealth of experience dealing with them. Infact EQ was my first MMO, I loved it, and SoE went from being my favorite MMO company to my most loathed. What contributes to this has been small things that have added up to a penultimate conclusion, that SoE dont care about their customers opinions/thoughts, but only about their money. I'll start with a timeline for each game and incident. My first MMO was Everquest, back before the Shadows of Luclin expansion, as far as I remember it, the game was laggy, it had slow zoning times and it didnt even have sound. But thats was fine becuase it was my first MMO and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It set in stone my favor for SoE and my love for MMO's. However I started to dislike their design choices in the game, new content came only in the form of expansions, and at the rate they released them I was forking out alot of dosh just to keep up. In the end I started to dislike the gamepaly changes and I moved onto other games. The second SoE MMO was Planetside, great game, really enjoyed it. But its suffered since its release. Very recently SoE has put it ont he back burner, with a skeleton development crew. There is virtually no development on this and game what there is, uses non-implimented beta content to cut down the work. I hate the way SoE milk games. The third was SWG, I wasnt a big player in this game, I played several times coming and going. I amassed a small wealthy, a house, I played as a master architect. But ever since this games launch is has had problems. It hit the shelves incomplete and buggy and there are bugs that existed from beta right up to NGE. There were problems (bounty hunter fix etc) that could have been fixed instead of developing the CU & NGE and players would have been content. Their customer support was horrendous, anyone remember the teleporting to space incident? I had a friend who's city hall vanished, he couldnt build a new one so SoE told him to build a new town somewhere else! I quit well before the CU, but I heard stories and came back to see the foul ups. The bugs that were never fixed. The class balances that were promised but never occured. The forum censorships. What topped it for me was not the NGE, but how they implimented it immediately after people ordered the expansion pack. I also forget to mention how the first expansion, jump to light speed was incomplete and didnt offer all the content they originally promised. This game was a scandal before NGE and its a scandal after. SoE's complete disregard for their customers has lead me to the conclusion that they arent worthy of my cash. SWG really caused me to think twice abuot SoE. I remember distinctly that SoE were always after more subscriptions throughout the game. I remember the Smedly banter before WoW released, how he was going to get more subs. I came to the conclusion that every change, CU, NGE, was not for the improvement of current subscribers, but in an attempt to get more outside subscribers. The ironic thing is, they now have less. The next title was EQ2, yet another game to release buggy and incomplete, its taken 1-2 years to get it to an enjoyable standard and even during that they released an expansion. Another thing that cuases me to loath SoE, where other games now offer content for no added cost, for new content in EQ2 you have to pay for it. I didnt like EQ2, but I tried it on multiple occasions, I had a customer support issue regarding billing, paid them but didnt get my time, which was never resolved. Matrix Online, I played at release, it wasnt a great game, made by a different company to SoE. I dont blame SoE for the state of the game, I blame SoE for milking it. Like Planetside they've got a skeletal development team doing bug fixes and implimenting very little new content. With this in mind, its very difficult to play a game in the knowledge that it will never expand or improve. Vanguard, again not SoE's fault, my perspective has actually improved with this game. they appear to be listening to their players, fixing issues that are high on everyones mind. The games improved immensely. Their customer support is noteworthy. But I find myself struggling to subscribe for this game in the knowledge of what SoE's done in SWG, of SoE's customer support, of SoE's habit of making you pay for all new content in its yearly expansions, its habit of releasing buggy and incomplete content. If SoE has truely turned a corner, I find it depressing that its taken 6 years to do so. I can only blame SoE's management for these problems, as its employee's get moved around often and ive heard rumors of entire development teams getting replaced on a yearly basis. More then anything, I constitute these problems to the person they've had in management since EQ, Smedly. And thats why I hate SoE. I dont wage hate campaigns against them, I dont put in bomb threats into their HQ, I just refuse to buy their games. I dont want to get burned again. |

Yep, provided you've got access to the internet whilst you're building it, the process of putting it together is doable. The main problem for new builders is figuring out whats compatible. You cant just buy any piece of hardware and expect it to work with everything. The setup ive put together is all compatible, so you shouldnt get any problems. If you decide to change anything, post it here to get feedback. Infact if you MSN, i'd be happy to help if you get stuck, add me: kane@surrealbx.co.uk |

GoA will be running the EU servers, billing and EU advertising for Warhammer Online. The same company, that many Europeans have grown to loath and even hate due to their experiences in DAoC. My experiences with GoA were questionable, I found their support to be slow and in many cases inneffective. In the Game, the EU server was always one patch behind the US, timewise this was up to 1-2 months, I found among players this was a major contributing factor to switching to US servers. Ingame events were few and far between. With the launch of ToA the EU side has reduced to game crippling amount of players, it didnt help the dwindling population any more that many were prefering to play on US servers. Overall the EU side of the game felt like it was insignificant. You could only contact GoA to express your views via email, to which you never recieved a response, so you felt your views were ignored. Whereas Mythic were atleast listening to their subscribers through third party forums. As a result of the mass exodus in DAoC EU; im curious just how many players are still loathesome to subscribe with GoA.
My question: With the knowledge of GoA's past inadequecy's in DAoC, will you be playing on GoA's EU servers or on the US servers? |

Funcom’s retail partner is now re-supplying retail boxes rapidly while also including new markets to the mix. Somehow, I find this statement hard to believe. Its obvious this is spin to improve their shares. |

Alright, heres a system:
Motherboard: BIOSTAR TForce TF720 A2+ AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA nForce 720a ATX AMD Motherboard Graphics Card: BFG Tech BFGE88512GTOCXFE GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card PSU: FG Tech BFGR650PSU 650W ATX 12v 2.0 / EPS 12V Power Supply Total: $511.96 (without tax)
I chose the cheapest of the top line of Motherboards so your PC will have a good amount of upgradability. Which saves money in the long run. I decided against SLI CPU its a 2.6 x2 which can be OC'd to a 2.8 on stock fan quite easily, Its enough to get you by for the next year, then when prices drop again you can invest in something more powerful (3.0ghz+). CPU isnt the highest requirement for MMO's atm so its not a biggy. Memory, Ive bought the best you can by, why? becuase theres very little price difference between different speeds/types so in the long run you save money by not having to upgrade it, I would have liked to get corsair but I went with the most economical option. I imagine 4gb will last you up to 2 years before you have to increase the capacity. Graphics, I put in an 8800GT, I use one myself, its an excellent card, this one comes pre OC'd with a good fan for little more then $10 extra, a bargain in my eyes. BFG are my personal preferance, they offer lifetime warrantys on their goods and their OC's are very reliable. These are your barebones, if you can salvage your HDD, DVD and case, your sorted. Theres alot of upgradability in this machine, the motherboard could last up to and over 4 years. Couple of items I also recommend:
HDD01: Western Digital Raptor WD740ADFD 74GB 10000 RPM SATA 1.5Gb/s Hard Drive Put your OS on this and your systems load times with reduce dramatically. Can also cut down on freezing & hitching. HDD 02: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive This is basically for mass storage, installing your games onto this HDD so they are on a seperate HDD to your OS can increase performance and reduce load times. Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer 7.1 Channels PCI Interface Sound Card Takes the strain of Sound processing off the CPU relieving power for other system tasks. It also greatly improves your sound quality.
Thats it, if you reuse your old case, make sure you check the dimensions of the motherboard to the case, same goes for the PSU. Nothing worse then buying all the kit then finding out you cant use the case. You will also want to look at the cases cooling. Hope this helps. * EDIT: CPU modified due to error. |

Whats your PSU, and is your case reusable? |

Dells are only good for laptops. Why? Good support, decent specs, thats it. For Desktop PC's, Dells are shite. Build your own, if you dont know what to buy, make a new thread with your location (EU/US/AUS) and your budget and people are more then likely to dig up a good spec for you. Also list anything in your current system you can reuse, such as harddrives, DVD drives, monitors, speaks, sound cards. |

Recent inside information, however, has given us more details about what happened to these 700,000 copies of the game. I'd be interested to find out what the source of this "inside information" actually is, until I do, I'll be treating these statistics as unreliable. |
