For me the entire idea of playing a role playing game is to play the role of a character who has abilities beyond that of a mere mortal, or at least has the potential to develop skills beyond that of a mere mortal. 

When you base a game around action, non-tab targeting combat, you base it around my personal hand-eye coordination. Therefore, I do not transcend my own limited skill set as a human player. Combat becomes based solely on what I can physically do, rather than what a character I have developed can do. No matter how much gear, how many levels I have gained, my combat skill is still based solely what I at the age of 43 can do with my personal hand-eye abilities.

Therefore, I do not find myself immersed in a role I have assumed, but rather continually feel frustrated at my personal abilities. 

Action combat is great in some instances, but, the reason I like tab targeting is essentially the same reason I prefer playing pnp dnd over actually combatting someone with a sword and shield, like SCA members for example.

Truth is, I actually like both, but it depends on the game and my mood. When I want to test my own prowess, I play action combat. When I want to immerse myself in a role, I play tab targeting.

There are multiple websites, books and magazines all dedicated to those specific topics which have millions of users.

The United States is the archetype for fun, immersive and exciting travel. There are millions upon millions who travel for vacation every single year. The Grand Canyon has over 5 million visitors per year. Thousands take multi-day hikes within its boundaries - and there would be more if there wasn't a permitting system limiting the numbers. 

Millions of people from Europe travel to this country and rent an RV simply to 'travel' in the U.S.

Thousands hike, or try to hike the Appalachian trail every year. Thousands hike or try to hike the Pacific Crest Trail every year. 

The term 'road trip' has become well established in the American lexicon as a term synonymous with 'fun and excitement'. 

REI made a multi-million dollar business around people who love to travel. How many travel sites are there on the web? Expedia, Priceline, Orbitz and TripAdvisor have all become multi-million dollar businesses, based solely on travel.

When you say Hoster, you mean publisher.  When you say programmed, you mean developed.

 

XL games is the developer.  Trion is the NA/EU publisher.

And by 'forget' you meant 'forgot'. And by 'there' you meant 'they're'. And by 'is self' you meant 'itself'. 

No judgement, just assuming you're on your phone, a non-native English speaker or drunk. Or maybe a combination of all three.

I wasn't hating on GW2. I figured someone might come back and say "well yeah, but we got pink unicorn mounts for christmas, nyaaah" or something. I don't know much about GW2, but I think they don't have killer clowns, and I'll always take killer clowns over pink unicorns. But if they had killer clowns, I might have to go check them out, yannow?

You were the one that hyjacked the thread. I was asking what people's impressions were a month into the game, not the raid stats of top guilds......

I actually read his post as further evidence of your opinion.....

If the top guilds are already that far, it begs the question, how much longevity does this expansion have for all of WoW's players? 

Starting to seem like you are discounting the top raiders as not worthy of mention, yet they pay the same sub rate as you, so why wouldn't their experience with the expansion add to the discussion?

Robert Putnam suggests we ought to go bowling again...like, in a real bowling alley.  If we want to know people, maybe we should get with people?

Personally, I don't play these games to meet people...I play these games to portray characters, and know other characters.  But nobody wants to play that game anymore...frankly, I don't know if we even can, when we expect people to Teamspeak and Skype while we mash buttons.

If you go to the bar and then to church it makes for some very memorable social interaction. You also tend to end up outside.

My favourite games are ESO and LOTR, both for the virtual world and relaxed lore based game play, so maybe stick with the thread rather than your slimy little misplaced personal attacks.

But your slimy wide sweeping generalization attack was far better placed wasn't it? 

im attacking the strategy of a company fleecing billions out of a stable customer base you fool, your just attacking people because you don't like their opinions.  I answered your suggestion that im 'ironic'(?) by telling you what games i enjoy and why, you just like being nasty.

Oh please.  I noticed the list of games you are currently playing.  And I find your entire soapbox speech about "connecting with your avatar and virtual world" to be highly ironic.  

 

 

My favourite games are ESO and LOTR, both for the virtual world and relaxed lore based game play, so maybe stick with the thread rather than your slimy little misplaced personal attacks.

I really wonder this too - I think it is very fun, well designed and polished. I don't know why people are so down on it. The reasons they give just don't strike true with my experience.

In EQ you simply couldn't progress with certain classes unless you made a group.

I'm a fan of this unbalance, I'm a fan of some classes being completely helpless without other classes, when those same classes are essential for raids, you either group and socialise, or don't progress.

Also, even the classes who were decent at soloing had a harder time doing it the closer to max level you got.

A necro could solo very well say in the mid 30's and 40's, once you got into the mid and late 50's, especially in kunark, it was still possible, but not spectacularly efficient.

The distribution wasn't equitable.

If you were an enchanter you almost always could find a group. Not only that, but as an enchanter, you could be choosy about your groups. It was common in dungeons for chanters to 'trade up' to groups with better camps and often leave your group without crowd control and thus the group fell apart. 1/6 of players were not enchanters and yet 1/6 needed to be for the content the way it was designed. More often than not you needed one for many many camps and there were none to be found. /who all enchanter = a list of too few chanters already deep in dungeons. This left a huge number of groups shouting 'lf chanter, have tank and healer' for sometimes hours.

This was a huge discrepancy.

If you were a cleric, it was relatively easy to group, but not like a chanter, in that you could bot a cleric successfully with 'sit, stand,  ch, sit'. Therefore a huge number of clerics were tied to someone's main, often a tank. Again, clerics were not 1/6 of the player base.Second tier healers often didn't get slots. As a Druid, although I could heal successfully in 99% of camps, I would regularly hear, as I sat shouting, 'lfg', sometimes, I shit you not, for hours - 'sorry we are waiting on a healer'.

if you were a tank you could get groups relatively easier than most, but you were in completion with 2 other viable classes. Tanks made up more than 1/6 of the player so often would be left groupless. And if you were not your guilds MT, than don't expect a chance at the good loot in a raid. You were relegated to the reject pile at best. 

Dps had it the worst. Sure they had 50% of the slots in theory, but if the choice was between a monk, wizard and rogue or a bst, ranger and Mage - you know who you gave the slots to. Having more desirable Dps classes left the 'undesirables' sitting in /ooc LFG. Remember the bot Mage leveled solely for the summons? Heaven forbid we include a Mage if we don't have to. Necrosis were rejected often as the idea was to kill with max speed to max leveling and good god that necro isn't doing any Dps because the mob is dead before the third tick of his hot. How many groups were specifically looking for a puller? How many Dps lost a slot to a monk, followed by a bard, and I even remember groups taking an sk rather than a pure Dps just for pulling purposes.

This is the tip of the iceberg for the problems the unbalanced class system created. Don't get me wrong, when it worked, it was better than any game out there. For a few, it worked all the time. For some it worked on occasion, and for the rest it was more common to spend most of your time looking for a group, being rejected by a group or watching your group disentigrate after hours spent obtaining the camp as your chanter said, 'later' for a better camp.

I think most here either have forgotten these down sides, or were not part of the reject class crowd. 

Yes, EQ encouraged grouping, but by design, a design flaw, the distribution of fun went to the few and the lucky and not the many.

If you think about it, having lgbt elements is actually a reflection of reality. Like it or not they exist in every corner of the globe.

There are 100s of MMOs out there - again if you really were looking for one - you would be doing so, trying lots of games - including smaller indie titles.

Again it seems that you would rather play "all MMOs suck, nothing to play" card than genuinely looking.

Wildstar is every bit as much a living breathing world as any of the 'original' mmos.

Not exactly serious. That was supposed to be a hook to make people read. Unfortunately, many here don't have the capacity to see beyond a literal interpretation, which is sad. 

The crux of my opinion is that it wasn't the games which were great, but our attitude towards them. No one can tell me that the 'mechanics' of EQ were superior to modern games when at release the only skills a warrior had were taunt and kick, with auto attack. No one can tell me EQ was great because of the difficulty and at the same time say that wildstars' attunement is too hard. No one can tell me it was the socialization when I can't think of one modern mmo without a chat box. Find your friends yourself dammit. No one can tell me that if wildstar was released in 99 along with EQ that EQ would be the dominant game. You made the games great because you put in the effort, it was fun because you were new.
