I wasn't hating on GW2. I figured someone might come back and say "well yeah, but we got pink unicorn mounts for christmas, nyaaah" or something. I don't know much about GW2, but I think they don't have killer clowns, and I'll always take killer clowns over pink unicorns. But if they had killer clowns, I might have to go check them out, yannow?

What about killer unicorns with pink clown wigs and floppy shoes?

LotRo beating WoW? That's a joke.

After playing characters to max in both games, it took me 1 second to vote for LoTRO. No joke:)

It took those who hate wow and never played lotro half a second to vote.

@JDis: I didn't realize we were discussing YOUR gameplay. The original post is not very clear. I thought we were discussing if WoW is still king. In a made-up kingdom of course.

You were the one that hyjacked the thread. I was asking what people's impressions were a month into the game, not the raid stats of top guilds......

I actually read his post as further evidence of your opinion.....

If the top guilds are already that far, it begs the question, how much longevity does this expansion have for all of WoW's players?

Starting to seem like you are discounting the top raiders as not worthy of mention, yet they pay the same sub rate as you, so why wouldn't their experience with the expansion add to the discussion?

I've given up on the idea of improving socialization in MMOs, some things are gone and likely never coming back.

I don't think I want to know the people in online games anymore, we are just not going to see eye to eye, so better if I can game with
with my small group of friends.

That's a shame, don't give up. Even if memorable moments are more sparse, they do happen. If they don't.. make them happen!

Why not, then, just make those memorable moments at the bar?  Or at church?  Or outside somewhere with real people?

Robert Putnam suggests we ought to go bowling again...like, in a real bowling alley.  If we want to know people, maybe we should get with people?

Personally, I don't play these games to meet people...I play these games to portray characters, and know other characters.  But nobody wants to play that game anymore...frankly, I don't know if we even can, when we expect people to Teamspeak and Skype while we mash buttons.

If you go to the bar and then to church it makes for some very memorable social interaction. You also tend to end up outside.

Oh please.  I noticed the list of games you are currently playing.  And I find your entire soapbox speech about "connecting with your avatar and virtual world" to be highly ironic.

My favourite games are ESO and LOTR, both for the virtual world and relaxed lore based game play, so maybe stick with the thread rather than your slimy little misplaced personal attacks.

But your slimy wide sweeping generalization attack was far better placed wasn't it?

im attacking the strategy of a company fleecing billions out of a stable customer base you fool, your just attacking people because you don't like their opinions.  I answered your suggestion that im 'ironic'(?) by telling you what games i enjoy and why, you just like being nasty.

And now a well placed slimy personal attack. It's all in the timing I suppose.

This site gave WildStar an 8.4 rating.

What does it mean? Like 8.4 out of 10? Isn't that a must-buy game? I don't understand the disconnect between the rating and the fallout post-launch. What happened?

I really wonder this too - I think it is very fun, well designed and polished. I don't know why people are so down on it. The reasons they give just don't strike true with my experience.

So somebody make a list if you have time.

I can think of five off the top of my head.......

And apparently there is a rather extensive list under that tab above called 'game list'.......

Honestly, this is an odd post.

What do you mean by forced grouping? Even Swtor, ESO and a number of AAA MMO's have content that can only be done with by a group. Not everything can be soloed.

In EQ you simply couldn't progress with certain classes unless you made a group.

If you took the warrior class, beyond lvl 20 or so, you would die on every mob you tried to solo, unless you grouped you would not progress. And dying solo on mobs had a heavy penalty in EQ. It meant a dangerous corpse run to retrieve your gear.

However, EQ did have some classes that could solo.

But the mere fact that many important classes couldn't solo at all, meant they were forced to engage with other people, it required leaders and people willing to follow.

Helping classes that couldn't solo at all, meant you could take down bigger mobs and have better groups.

I'm a big fan of having essential classes in MMO that can't solo at all. That doesn't mean there shouldn't be some classes that can solo.

In EQ you basically had half the classes that could solo, some better than others, and then classes that had a hard time soloing. I'm a fan of this unbalance, I'm a fan of some classes being completely helpless without other classes, when those same classes are essential for raids, you either group and socialise, or don't progress.

This

Also, even the classes who were decent at soloing had a harder time doing it the closer to max level you got.

A necro could solo very well say in the mid 30's and 40's, once you got into the mid and late 50's, especially in kunark, it was still possible, but not spectacularly efficient.

This, but......

The distribution wasn't equitable.

If you were an enchanter you almost always could find a group. Not only that, but as an enchanter, you could be choosy about your groups. It was common in dungeons for chanters to 'trade up' to groups with better camps and often leave your group without crowd control and thus the group fell apart. 1/6 of players were not enchanters and yet 1/6 needed to be for the content the way it was designed. More often than not you needed one for many many camps and there were none to be found. /who all enchanter = a list of too few chanters already deep in dungeons. This left a huge number of groups shouting 'lf chanter, have tank and healer' for sometimes hours.

This was a huge discrepancy.

If you were a cleric, it was relatively easy to group, but not like a chanter, in that you could bot a cleric successfully with 'sit, stand,  ch, sit'. Therefore a huge number of clerics were tied to someone's main, often a tank. Again, clerics were not 1/6 of the player base.Second tier healers often didn't get slots. As a Druid, although I could heal successfully in 99% of camps, I would regularly hear, as I sat shouting, 'lfg', sometimes, I shit you not, for hours - 'sorry we are waiting on a healer'.

if you were a tank you could get groups relatively easier than most, but you were in completion with 2 other viable classes. Tanks made up more than 1/6 of the player so often would be left groupless. And if you were not your guilds MT, than don't expect a chance at the good loot in a raid. You were relegated to the reject pile at best.

Dps had it the worst. Sure they had 50% of the slots in theory, but if the choice was between a monk, wizard and rogue or a bst, ranger and Mage - you know who you gave the slots to. Having more desirable Dps classes left the 'undesirables' sitting in /ooc LFG. Remember the bot Mage leveled solely for the summons? Heaven forbid we include a Mage if we don't have to. Necrosis were rejected often as the idea was to kill with max speed to max leveling and good god that necro isn't doing any Dps because the mob is dead before the third tick of his hot. How many groups were specifically looking for a puller? How many Dps lost a slot to a monk, followed by a bard, and I even remember groups taking an sk rather than a pure Dps just for pulling purposes.

This is the tip of the iceberg for the problems the unbalanced class system created. Don't get me wrong, when it worked, it was better than any game out there. For a few, it worked all the time. For some it worked on occasion, and for the rest it was more common to spend most of your time looking for a group, being rejected by a group or watching your group disentigrate after hours spent obtaining the camp as your chanter said, 'later' for a better camp.

I think most here either have forgotten these down sides, or were not part of the reject class crowd.

Yes, EQ encouraged grouping, but by design, a design flaw, the distribution of fun went to the few and the lucky and not the many.

1. Dial-up

2. Elimination of 99% of social media outlets

3. Novelty and wonder in the ability to chat with people from around the globe

Are you saying homosexuals actually don't exist? Or are you saying an ideal world wouldn't have them, therefore they shouldn't be represented?

Some games are making lifestyle statements with:

- man/woman only relationships

- heterosexual only npcs

- male dominant/female objectified only

If you think about it, having lgbt elements is actually a reflection of reality. Like it or not they exist in every corner of the globe.

Wouldnt the most accurate game have them - and have some cultures accept them and some reject them?

?????

ArcheAge is a niche game - and it's doing great. All the servers were high pop tonight.

I was really pointing at the humor that he was so into AA that he chose it as his forum name, yet, he has already dropped it....just seemed kinda funny to me.

Not sure what is expected to come out of this. Bad matchups will result in a game moving forward that normally wouldn't and the end result is always going to be WoW anyway just due to the amount of people that play it.

Wait wait wait - wow is going to win a contest deciding which game is most popular based on the fact that more people like it......how unfair, obviously rigged. Thank god the president isn't elected just because more people vote for him.

Unfortunately, yes. WoW is going to win the poll, so it's not really much of a contest.

Isn't it so unfair that the most poplar game is going to win a popularity contest? I mean how could that happen?

Hell, you could eliminate the world from 90% of MMO's and it wouldn't matter since it isn't utilized after you hit max level and all it is is instance this instance that.
You are not accounting for players growing up and newness of MMOs wearing off.

There are games today that are more virtual worlds than any gen 1 game - why aren't you playing them?

Because you changed, the newness awe feeling is gone forever.

Like?

Nothing I say  can be seen clearly as long as you have those glasses on - so its pointless to even say anything.

If you couild take any good open world modern game *today* and you transport it back through time and show it to gamers back in 1999-2003 - they would drop UO and EQ1, AC, AO, DAoC in a heartbeat.

lol...nice non response....You meant to say none. No current MMO (not including WoW...for me at least. It was a breathing world when I played it. Dunno bout now)

If they made a STALKER MMO, a Fallout MMO, Halflife maybe? THEN...you would have a world. A REAL Elder Scrolls world MMO? Yes please.

But that it what is meant to be a world.

There are 100s of MMOs out there - again if you really were looking for one - you would be doing so, trying lots of games - including smaller indie titles.

Again it seems that you would rather play "all MMOs suck, nothing to play" card than genuinely looking.

I agree with DMKano here.

But I'll also answer your question.

Wildstar is every bit as much a living breathing world as any of the 'original' mmos.

Not sure if serious.

Not exactly serious. That was supposed to be a hook to make people read. Unfortunately, many here don't have the capacity to see beyond a literal interpretation, which is sad.

The crux of my opinion is that it wasn't the games which were great, but our attitude towards them. No one can tell me that the 'mechanics' of EQ were superior to modern games when at release the only skills a warrior had were taunt and kick, with auto attack. No one can tell me EQ was great because of the difficulty and at the same time say that wildstars' attunement is too hard. No one can tell me it was the socialization when I can't think of one modern mmo without a chat box. Find your friends yourself dammit. No one can tell me that if wildstar was released in 99 along with EQ that EQ would be the dominant game. You made the games great because you put in the effort, it was fun because you were new.

what do you think my wall was about exactly?

ill make it shorter for you. I am having fun, but you never will because of a close minded arrogance that allows you to feel the way you do. Devolved into a troll. I'm done.

keep not having fun.

I agree with DMKano here.

But I'll also answer your question.

Wildstar is every bit as much a living breathing world as any of the 'original' mmos.

It has all of the same ingredients, plus more. Big zones, consistent, fun lore, chat functionality, guild functionality, combat, grind for top tier, group only content,  etc. Name one feature Wildstar does NOT have that earlier mmo's had. It has every single feature the original games had. Ok, harsh death penalty - I'll give you that one. But is that what made EQ great? You may say it is an element but not the hinge everything else rested on.

What made EQ great?

Good friends, great guilds, raiding, questing, exploring, lore, challenge, learning all the nuances of the game, finding all the nooks and crannies. They still exist - but you simply won't put the effort in like you did when mmo gaming was new. Because, you can't rewind history and go back and experience the exact same thing you have already experienced and have it feel new and exciting. You cannot unlearn what you have learned.

But what is the common cry against Wildstar or any other modern mmo?

"Been there, done that"

One can't have their cake and eat it too.

One cannot on the one hand claim, "No game has what I had in the original games, and they need to put it back" and then whine that all the new mmo's are boring because, "it brings nothing new to the table".

This is the paradox of nostalgia.

You want exactly what you had originally, but you want something new you have never experienced before.

Those two things are mutually exclusive.

You either want what you used to have or you want something different.

If you want what you used to have, don't get bored with the games that emulate past games.

All mmo worlds are dead and don't breath.

The players breathed life into those worlds. The game didn't find friends for you in EQ. The game didn't create a group through chat for you. The game didn't put together a raid or a guild or explore the world for you. You did that. You. You made the game great. You. Make your own fate in the games you play. You.

In original EQ, a warrior had auto attack, taunt, kick and bash. That's it. EQ wasn't great. You were.

Name one other area of life where reality has met your nostalgic feelings. Here's some anecdotal evidence. My generation feels that Star Wars, Empire and Jedi were by far the best. We grew up on them. The last 3 (I, II and III) don't even come close. In fact, many of us abhor them with all of our being because they simply do not recreate the feelings we had when we saw the originals. My nephews first saw I, II and III. They grew up on them, it was their first taste of the Star Wars universe. They saw the originals as late teens and hate them - "They look so fake", "there isn't any action", "the light saber fights are lame". My jaw drops when I hear this and I'm pretty sure those statements make baby Jesus cry. We are nostalgic for the 'first time feel' not for our 2nd experience.

I remember my first kiss. I remember the first time I had sex. I remember driving a car for the first time. I kissed my wife today - but I doubt I'm taking that kiss to my grave, even though it was in every single conceivable way better than my first. Why? Because I've kissed my wife 1000s of times. It isn't a new experience for me. I'm not nostalgic for 'the time I drove to work yesterday' - but somehow am nostalgic for the first time I drove my 1978 AMC concord with 3 on the fly. Explain that.

Do I go onto automobile forums ranting about how the 1978 AMC concord has never been recreated and no car has made me feel that way since and how car manufacturers owe me that same feeling I had at the age of 17? Cuz back then you had to work. I remember struggling with the clutch and the 3 on the fly. The seat belts didn't quite work. Sometimes I had to push start it. I remember the smell of the vinyl seats. I remember the cracked and faded dash and vague odor of cigarettes from the guy who sold it to me - and it was awesome. Why can't a modern car company give me that feeling back? I mean I truly had to get to know my car back then.

See it is silly. Yet we do it with games all the time.

That is the crux of what nostalgia is all about. It's about the way we felt when it was a new experience for us. It has nothing to do with the way it was. Everything to do with how I felt. Games do not create my feelings. I do. I will not relinquish my right as a human to be in charge of my own feelings. I don't passively let binary code determine my happiness or dispair.

Developers can never make a game where you experience an mmo for the first time again. You did that yourself already. Be proud, you did it yourself - a computer did not create your emotion.

I guarantee you that no mmo will ever release that will make you as stoked as your first. Ever. Ever. Ever.

Ever.

Good lord, 1 - 65 in a day now.

If I am inferring correctly - you really didn't understand his post if you think that somehow levelling a toon is easy now. Lvl 65 is the new level 5 - and 65 to max is a long hard slog taking months and requiring lots of help. Sounds like EQ to me.
