Yes, I would play it.  It looks very cute and relaxing...

Hi All,

First off I think Tabula Rasa has the potential to be a truly great game.  The only thing I personally find it lacking is this:  No emotional factor.  By that I mean there needs to be something to defend that really matters to me as the character I play.  When I am in game, sure I am having fun, running around doing missions and shooting the hell out of everything... but what am I really defending?  Given I am only at the lower lvls and have not seen the higher lvls to know what I am defending there.  What I hope to see is men, women and children in towns rebuilding a way of life that needs to be defended.  Give me lives to defend against the Bane forces, give me some emotional connection to these creatures besides a backstory of Earth being destroyed.  IMHO there needs to be some emotional factor to make me hungry to log into and play this game.  Is anyone else out there feeling that too?  I'm not bashing the game so don't get me wrong, if it has this in higher lvls that is great.  Give me a reason to be hungry to play this.  :)

Thank you for the great article, it was very informative and helpful.  :)
I must agree with most others here in that this doesn't belong on MMORPG.com at all.  They are great games, don't get me wrong... but not what this site is about.

Like many people, I originally came to these boards looking for information about Vanguard.  I'm disapointed to say that what I found was simply the average MMO complainers getting a jump start on complaining about a game that they haven't even played yet.  For anyone else new to this forum, here's what I've found after about 15 minutes of reading:

#1  People talking like they've played the game.  When you say  "This game sucks" you're implying that you play the game.  How else would you know it sucks if you're not currently in the beta test?

#2  People complaining about SoE.  I know the quote by Brad McQuaid saying that SoE has no control over the game's development has been posted here, probably multiple times.  Yet, for no apparent reason, you still complain.  They're in charge of publishing.  Saying that SoE is destroying the game is like saying the 7th Harry Potter book will be horrible because it's being published and distributed by a certain company.

#3  People just being negative for the hell of it.  They've seen some screens, they've read the limited information about Vanguard, and they've managed to convince themselves that they know this game will bomb.  So, of course, first thing they do is run to this forum to post about their recent discovery.

I'm sorry to say that I generally feel worse about the overall MMO community after reading this forum.  I mean, some of you are grown adults sitting behind your computers and flaming a game that you haven't played.
I agree entirely with what you've said here.  Just remember, because it helps me to remember... the amount of negative people who post on these forums at this site is a VERY small percentage of the people who play all the MMORPG's out there.  So what is on these fourms isn't the majority of opinions from all those hundreds of thousands of people (worldwide) who play these games. There are alot of poitive thinkers here and I applaud them.  Those who trash the games they haven't played are a ridiculously small percentage of the people who play MMORPGs.

I must confess I am also an "Altaholic" lol.  You may call it laziness if you like, you can even call it a waste of time and money if that is what you think.  But for myself I really have alot of fun making different characters and trying them on for size.  I have leveled characters up to cap as well, but I love to try out new races and classes.  So I've always had all my character slots filled.  I don't see anything wrong with playing the game this way if that is what you enjoy.  To me it isn't about the money of a monthly fee or trying to be the highest and best player out there... its ALL about what makes the game enjoyable for me at any given time.

People are always entitled to think what they will.  I agree with the article and its point.  Enjoy the game by doing what YOU like to do, not what others dictate you should do.  I am also a "Casual gamer"  I am 36 years old, married, full time job and not alot of time.  On different nights I play different ways depending on my mood.  There is no "indecisiveness" involved.  Just like I'll have spagetti one night for dinner and turkey on another night, all depends on the mood of the day.

You are welcome to defend this game all you like. I would like to see the game succeed, not because I have any interest in playing it, but because every time a PC game fails it shifts the momentum, if only just a bit, towards consoles. I suspect the game has problems though, for one glaring reason, Microsoft wouldn't let a cash cow slip through their fingers.  To cut the game loose this late in development  means they didn't see a great potential for it. It certainly won't be a WoW killer and if it hurts any existing game it will be those in the Sony stable. So it's probably a good move on Sony's part to hook up with Sigil. Oh, and I've head nothing nice from anyone claiming to be in the Beta tests (they could just be haters though, who would know for sure)

First off, anyone who says they are in the Beta is lacking in integrity and honesty since its against the NDA to even say they are in the beta much less say anything about the game.  Second, if they lack the integrity and honesty to stick to the NDA what makes you think they will be honest and true about the state of the game itself.  I personally wouldn't believe a thing they'd have to say since they probably aren't really in the beta in the first place.  I for one am waiting for the game to come out before I say good or bad about it simply because I have never played it.  I am looking forward to seeing what it becomes...

first of all, im not even going to play VG, i think its game mechanics suck. Now thats out of the way, i just wanted to come in and ridicule all of you. "Flapping of wings doesnt look real"...? WTF, who gives a shit?! Its no wonder MMORPGs are going downhill if people whine and cry something as trivial as wing flapping! Its not supposed to be a fucking documentary ffs.

/rant off

^ lol no kidding, it's like some people look at the bright side of things, while others look for things to complain about.  So far, we got people complaining about flapping, raiding, size of the game, gameplay, animation, where rider sits, etc.. all that from just 2 short videos of flying mounts lol.   It's actually comedy anymore.

I agree... I'm thinking this site should be renamed MMORPGC.com...  meaning Massive Multi-player Online Role Playing Games Complaints.com.  Never before on any other site have I seen a larger bunch of whiners.  Can't you find anything good to say about a game even if its one you aren't interested in.  There are tons of games here I don't give a hoot about, but you won't find me bashing them just because I can.    As for the TOPIC of this post, I thought the videos looked great.  Can't wait to see it in action.

When you play a singleplayer game, such as Oblivion, it may play and look better, but one is painstakingly aware that everything is "dead". I'm the only one there. The cool thing about MMORPG is that the place is alive and full of life with real living people. All the characters represent actual humans - not some program. This is what makes MMORPG attractive for some of us. But I still enjoy the singleplayer aspect, which is why I'd like MMORPGs to have even more soloplay content than they do. One does not need to be in a group to enjoy the social side of a MMORPG.

I agree absolutely.  While I love grouping with my friends there are times when they are not on and I don't feel like or have time to wait for a group.  I love knowing there are other people out there if I wish to talk or group but that I am not forced to do so if I just want to adventure alone.  :)

Here is a copy of Freeze's post from the "Gratz Everyone" Thread here in the forums... In case anyone hasn't read it...

Hey Guys,

A quick update here from Spellborn HQ:

First of all, we are amazed by the amount of competition entries. While these numbers make us very happy, we will make sure that we can give all the people that didn't win a fair chance to join the open beta when it starts at the end of this year/early 2007.

We are currently finalizing our servers in the US. Since Spellborn requires optimal server connections, we don't want to put the non EU contest winners on a European beta server. This will mean that all 250 contest winners will be allowed to join the beta at the same time as soon as all US servers are up and running and are tested by are QA department.

Expect your client and beta login before the end of November. This might be a disappointment for some (or many) of you, for which we apologise, but we have worked on this project for years and we want to show it to you in its best possible form.

We expect to get the full list of winners from the mmorpg.com staff within the next few days. Winners can expect more details and information via email within 2 weeks.

For those of you that won a beta invite, feel free to send me (Freeze) a pm on our website (
www.tcos.com) if you have any questions or comments. On a side note; we will replace the client on fileplanet before the invites are send out. It will save you a lot of time and bandwidth to not download the current client.

Thanks again for understanding and i hope to see you all soon in the world of Spellborn.

Cheers,

Marco 'Freeze' van Haren

Ok, I've waited for someone to say that, and no1 has, so I'll be the chosen one (by myself).

Most, if not all, of the 250 beta winners have read the following Post by Mr. Marco van Haren, also known as - Freeze_TCoS, the PR Manager of TCoS.

I edited the original message to make it shorter and more concise.

This was posted in 4/11/06, Two weeks have evidently past already, I did not received any email from the company.
For me this is dissapointing, we are all (potential) future customers, and we won fair and square in that contest. They should tell us of any delays, by mail.

If you read the rest of the post by Freeze you'd know that they said the US servers will be up before the end of the month.  The month isn't over yet...
I personally go into the game world as a fun escape from reality just like alot of other people do.  I usually don't spend alot of time looking closely at other peoples' avatars, I usually do look more at the armor they have and the weapon they wield.  That being said, I do however like to look pretty in the game world as far as hairstyle, skin, facial and body features go because it is just another part of the fantasy fun.  I am female in RL and average looking and yes I would love to look like Angelina Jolie, but it isn't happening lol.  So when I am in the fantasy realm I would like to look like the fantasy me.  If other people don't like it thats fine, its what I think of it that counts.  Fantasy game = Fantasy avatar = fun for me.  This is just my opinion.  I don't see it as being sexist in any way, just plain fantasy fun.
Hello and Grats to everyone else who won!! I've never won a thing in my life so I'm thrilled.  Can't wait to be a part of the process.  :)
Personally I think people should quit whining and just wait til the game comes out so they can play it and really decide what they like and don't like about it... I have to say from all I have read so far it sounds very interesting, I've never played any Simu games before, but it sounds like they know their stuff.  :)
I always enjoy these Developer Journals, they are funny and informing.  I would definitely like to see some new classes that go beyond the "Norm" of the usual fantasy mmorpg.  The gearknight sounds great, but what else is there that is new and exciting, the Necro and Ranger sound very similar to other games, although I am certain there will be differences that set them apart.  :)

I am a female and I've been playing MMO's since about 2000.  All of what she states in her article is true.  One of my favorite things to do in MMO's is character creation and roleplay.  I like to feel like a female when I play these games as well, so I prefer to have sexier armor than what males have and I like to look really good as well as be tough in whatever class I choose.  Its not a flirty thing, just that I like to imagine myself in this way.  And after all what is character creation for than to make an avatar that you will love to keep playing and that makes you feel good about your persona in the online world.  I enjoy exploration more than PvP in any game I am in, I'm just not into killing other people...there is too much of that in reality.  I love a good adventure with good companions and roleplay.  So there is my two cents. :)

And a little addition to this after reading an above comment... I am 35 years old and my RL Husband doesn't and has never played Online games.  I began playing because my friends were playing and I've always loved computer games, but the online games seem so much more fun because I am able to share my adventures with others.  I've been playing computer games since my father brought home his old Commodore 64 and Vic20 years and years ago.  Most females that play would probably agree that their playing online games had nothing to do with their husband, but with their own love of the game. :)

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, includeing Keldros.  That is why this forum exists...
Which as I was saying in my above statement is that I am HOPING that there will be one that does and DnD online at least from what I have heard does not.  I haven't found even one yet that does a great job of character customization and I have played many MMORPG's which is why I haven't stayed with any of them to this date.  So I'm thinking that what I meant in my above statement is that it would take a bit more of it to make me buy another online game.  That being said there is no such thing as the perfect MMORPG, but I am careful where I spend my money. :)
I have to say it, one of the most important things to me aside from the grand adventure of exploration, combat and quests... is character customization.  I need to feel like a unique individual in whatever gaming realm I join.  Having read up on the articles for the game and the previews I can honestly say I won't be investing in this game.  I'm sure that it will be alot of fun for DnD fans, it just doesn't sound good for me.

I've never been fond of PVP but that's just me.  I'll be very happy if they have seperate servers or if its on the same server have it be consentual.  Never was fond of being ganked.  :)
