They should just release the darn thing with three races and a level 30 cap.  Based on my experiences in the last BWE, this portion of the game seems pretty much done.  They could add the final two races and increase the level cap over the next few months and it wouldn’t bother me at all.

haha although I have the same sentiment that I want to play the game NOW and I was already blown away by the BWE state of the game, that what you suggest would backfire because folks will be whining they got nothing to do, within a couple of days.

I’m sure you’re right that many people would get bored stuck at level 30 and begin to complain.  But not me.

I’m very shallow and the only reason I am buying this game is for the WvW.  I only ever play humans so for me the game is pretty much done right now.

Thanks for posting the videos.  The color coordination reminded me of a clan that also ran around all purple in an old game called Neocron.  I forget their name.

I’ve read that as soon as you enter the Mists your character is boosted to level 80, all the skills are unlocked, and you have access to the best gear.  My understanding is that this holds true if you enter the ranked/instanced PvP matches since they are all about skill and not gear or character level.

But I have also read that in WvW: “Character level adjustments have a limit, however. The level-adjustment system won’t let a level 1 character go head-to-head against a level 80 character with much chance of victory—a level 80 character is still going to have more bonuses on their gear and access to a full complement of utility and elite skills that players just don’t have at lower levels.”

So does this mean that when your character enters the Mists all the skills are unlocked but then if you walk through the WvW portal only the skills you have unlocked are available?

I want to make it very clear that I am not criticizing the system; I am simply trying to understand how the scaling works in WvW.

I'm playing the TERA beta right now. I suppose I'm technically not allowed to say whether or not I have played GW2 hands-on yet...

It's true that TERA is an "action" RPG because of the mouse-bound skills and crosshair aiming. However, in my opinion it still feels clunky. Your character still has to stop moving in order to use skills, and the mobility aspects of combat are skills unto themselves. For example, right now I have a skill that makes me jump backward bound to right-click. It's nice to have, but at the same time I wish that I didn't have to take up a skill slot with something that does nothing but make me move.

In GW2, combat mobility is more engrained. You can use almost every skill while moving, no stopping. So that makes it very fluid, and the enemies are tough enough that you definitely do want to keep moving around. There is also the dodge function built right into the WASD controls (double tap a direction to dodge roll in that direction.) And many skills incorporate movement in their functionality, rather than devoting a skill slot to something that only moves you. For example, Burning Speed on the elementalist that launch you forward and leaves a trail of fire behind. Or the ranger mainhand sword attack that reposition you around your enemy to avoid damage. There are lots of examples, since it's a very mobile game.

My levelling experience in TERA is rather uninteresting. It's a standard "kill 10 rats" grind, so far. Tons of running between NPCs who have question marks over their head, tons of skipping over quest dialogue, tons of faceroll grind. That's the early-game levelling experience.

By contrast, GW2 kicks you into the world and says "Here's your weapon, have fun!" The dynamic events are SO much more engaging. Even when, at the end of the day, killing enemies in a dynamic event is the same task as kill 10 rats questing...it's the context that matters. In a dynamic event, there is the aspect of a time crunch. You are presented with a win/fail scenario, and you know that the event will not still be there five minutes from now. So you choose to participate or not, and once you're in, you're engaged in the action. It's not like regular questing where you can play as I am at this moment...I'm supposed to be killing sick deer creatures, but I'm typing on a forum instead because I know those creatures will still be there an hour from now. They will jus respawn forever regardless of my actions. With a dynamic event, if you pass on the event, then you don't know exactly when it will happen again.

Great post.

I noticed in videos of character creation that you have to make certain choices about your character’s background and preferences.  I assume the personal story will continue to present you with many more choices.

Do these choices have any effect on combat or build mechanics or are they simply for aesthetic and RPG purposes?

Thanks.
I know that the WvW area is divided into four land masses.  Are these four sections separate zones that require a portal and loading screen or can you walk continuously from one to another?

Thanks.

I’ll be playing GW2 primarily for their WvW content so I will be very curious to see how an expansion adds to that aspect of the game.

New Zone.... in the Desolation Elona where you can gain the favour of the Junundus to ride safely across the wastes and siege castles from a different entrance or maybe the Jade sea, that's always a good place to punch people in the face. Actually.... Jade sea has got me thinking... SIEGE TURTLES!!! It would be cool to see Siege Turtles in GW2 graphics.

New zones are an obvious but very important way to spice up PvP.  There are plenty of shooters that are going strong a decade after launch simply due to the constant supply of new maps from the player community.  But the WvW area in GW2 is so huge and complex that I wonder if ArenaNet is up to challenge of creating an entirely new one for an expansion?

If they do eventually create new WvW zones then I hope they rotate between them every two week cycle rather than splitting the player base  up amongst multiple WvW maps running concurrently.

Maybe they could scramble the locations of the resource camps and minor towers to keep things interesting.

You can only participate in WvW on your homeserver, and there is a fee (probably gems) to change your homeserver.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of a fee associated with changing homeservers.  Regardless, I plan to spend 80% of my time in the WvWvW zone and if the server I am on does not have a whole lot of activity in this area then I will most likely pay the fee.

No, you wont. GW2 PvE is too dependant on players working together on the fly, world PvP would just complicate that.

You can however head straight to the Mists and level up there in World vs World PvP or using Battlegrounds.

You completely misunderstood me.  I am not talking about open PvP in the PvE zones.  Read it again.
I didn’t play the original game.  PvE content and small group, instanced, structured PvP doesn’t interest me.  But I stumbled across a world vs. world video a few weeks ago and now I am definitely giving this a try.

Open world PvP is very dependent on high populations to work well.  One concern I have comes from my experience in Warhammer Online.  That game also offered PvE content, instanced PvP, and world PvP.  My main interest was in the world PvP but even during the very first month when populations were high, it was difficult to find consistent world PvP action.  I realize that WAR split each server’s population into opposing factions and that their tier system split the players up yet again, but I still get the feeling that there will be many GW2 servers where the world PvP action will be less active than other servers.

Over time, players interested primarily in world versus world gameplay will begin migrating to a subset of servers where the majority of players share their primary interest.  I’m not saying this is a bad thing as I can definitely see myself following that path.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Never played the original but this sequel is catching my interest.

Will it matter that I never played GW or is there some sort of carried over bonus that would put me at a disadvantage?

(I ask this question with regards to the PvP; I don’t care at all about cosmetic or other fluff features.)

Crap.  I wasn't expecting to get in this early...don't have the game downloaded yet!

I refuse to ever buy a game based off of "potential."  Even the thought makes me cringe considering in order to pay for something that may be put in later, I have to pony up 60$ right now.  Now 60 dollars isn't alot to spend on a good game that I enjoy, it is however alot of money to waste.  So I only buy games that I've tried and I believe will get me my dollars worth out of the purchase as is.  And yes, I will be purchasing the game because I enjoy it how it is now.  It has flaws but there's nothing on the horizon that looks as fun for me, so I'm biting the bullet on the first game I've ever pre-ordered.

I've played several MMOGs which I quit in the first month or two and never felt that I wasted my money.  I had plenty of fun for my $60 even if it turned out not to be the game for me.

I think that any fan of this genre of games—even a fan that wasn’t following the massive pre-launch marketing blitz—would have gleaned enough information to have a pretty good idea of what kind of game this was going to be.  Nonetheless, I think it is perfectly reasonable to have hoped to be pleasantly surprised and to be a little let down that it turned out to be just another typical MMORPG—albeit a very polished one.

In other words, it’s going to be a very good game but not that innovative dream game that too many of us keep looking for.
