Oh jeeze....this looks..whats the word

ahh..cartoony

Thankyou WoW for impacting even sci-fi games. Comon PE dont do this, please tell us thats a dumbed down teaser pic, EVE is gigantic and their graphics are WAY better than this, plus EVE is how old?

I still think there is hope about STO coming back to life, sooner or later a reputable company will come along realizing it has potential. However I gave  PE every chance, and im giving them another one.  But it just seems like the news is always going downhill.

About Startrek-online.net. I realize this thread wasnt supposed to be about sto.net but I suppose its related because PE and sto.net are often linked together. I must say STOnet has usually defended PE. I remember when there was a thread made about the state of the game and how things needed to be changed. It became one of themost viewed and replied threads on the website within weeks, then it vanished. I searched for it but nothing came up. Little odd dont you think. Anyways, nothing personal Surricat.

Oh well, its better to be optimistic, lets hope for the best.

The reason Fantasy is more popular among developing ideas instead of Sci-Fi is because Sci-fi usually involves guns. It's not that guns are viewed as "bad" but that it usually involved First-Person shooter, "RP" combat simply makes more sense with melee and spells than it does with science-guns, in which first-person shooter makes more sense. It's just a mtter of time before more games use FPS and then the market will grow, however RP will probably remain (reasons said earlier) the main combat for a long time to come.

Back to the OP:

I voted for Star Trek simply because I dont like SG much at all (except Atlantis a bit) and I love Trek, whether or not it will be a huge success is another story, I'm iffy about it as I dont really like a lot of the decisions made be the STO perpetual team but none the less, STo is at the top of my list.

I tried EVE, it was ok but didnt really interest me, great graphics though and I might try it out again when they add the ability to walk around on ships.

There others I'm just not really interested in but if they end up having free beta or trials ill check them out. Just because I love Trek doesnt mean I'm stuck with it, I love SW also but I havent played SWg much in the last year.

I have to say I have been worried about Perpetual's handling of this game for a year or two. I tried voicing my opinion on Startrek-online.net but they only allow pro-PE talk.  I was optimistic when PE said they would explore new ways of MMOing and be revolutionary yet they seem to instead go the conservative safe way so they stay alive or something. The only way you can break through the MMo market is to make something different.

I dont think every dev-log has to be serious, but it seems the only good logs have been the first two, and I would appreciate it if the devs tried to talk about what the players want to know, (cough, cough) DIRECTION OF THE GAME!!

Anyways, Perpetual if you happen to be reading this, doubtful since its not sto.net but anyways if you are. I really do hope STO become sa huge success, I just hope you really take hold of this IP and try to think of new ideas and stop falling back to safe-mode.

Although I think PE overall has made some bad decisions, I do not think puting G&H on hold was a bad choice. Would you rather have them release it now unpolished or would you rather have them wait so it is better later on. once u release it u cant fix it, we all saw what happened when that was attempted with SWG. If SWG had waited a year or a couple months it could have been a much greater game.

Although I have disagreed a lot about Perpetual's decisions, I think puting G&H on hold was a good one however I still understand the grief from all of the devoted fans. Afterall, PE was doing good then all of the sudden due to their lack of abilites...started going down-hill. They had awards for their game and everything.

I am optimistic about Star Trek Online, I believe Perpetual will go forth and finish it completely and learn their mistakes from G&H. I do however think it is important that the community never stop demanding, if we never talked then earlier decisions like 2d flight would still be on the table, but due to outcry from community it is now 3d flight.

Anyways, thats what I think about the issue.

I was looking at the Perpetual website and on their main page I saw this.

BioWare Corp. Licenses Perpetual Entertainment's Online Technology Platform for Upcoming MMO Game

June 28, 2007 - BioWare's Austin studio has licensed Perpetual's online technology platform for an upcoming Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) title. The agreement gives BioWare - the company best known for their award-winning Baldur's Gate™ and Neverwinter Nights™ series, as well as the 2003 Game of the Year, Star Wars®: Knights of the Old Republic™ - the platform to deploy and support its online titles utilizing Perpetual's industry-leading technology for online game operations, deployment, infrastructure development, and community support.

This is odd I think, considering Perpetual just let go of Gods and Heroes. I could be reading it wrong but arent they basically saying BioWare is getting Perpetual to make an mmo with them (or for)?

Where does anyone get the numbers that SWG is more popular than Lotr?  Lotr has around 500,000 subs, SWG less than 50,000 and that is being generous to SWG.  The servers are just empty.

The Lucas Arts guy they interviewed was strictly a spin doctor, he has no clue what he is doing when it comes to MMO's just read the interview, huge clueless sign in neon letters on his forehead.

Have to love interviewers that interview marketing types and expect straight answers, now that is clueless journalism.  So you can basically take those quotes above and toss them out the door they are completely meaningless.

Umm..they said SW not SWg...HUGE difference. "How many exp's did EQ1 had? and here we talking about Star Wars the IP thats more popular then LOTR."...thats what he said

The SW fanbase is huge, but so is LOTR and Star Trek, to be honest I think the game that KOTOR online will hurt the most is Star Trek Online simply because (according to rumour) they are coming out around the same time, KOTOR (again rumour) will be using a next-gen engine and STO wont, finally...and the obvious and this is no rumour...they are both sci-fi. Yes WoW and all other mmos might get hit depending on well they make it, but I think the ones it will hurt the most are mmos with fanbases that have similar interests (sci-fi).

Remember though, just because the idea is good doesnt mean it will be great. Star Wars is a house hold name and World of Warcraft isnt...but guess which mmo has millions of subs and guess which one is waning.

Lore is only guidlines...WoW doesnt follow lore and they have uh 9 million???  So lore is garbage and only a simple guideline. Like klingons should ride in federation ships...thats all.

Right, did you ever play SWG? They added jedi galore against the lore and look what happened. I dont want to start a whole jedi suck war but you cant say jedi made SWG the best MMO. ST fanbase is a prickly thorn and if u screw up the lore horribly your gonna end up with a sucky game. Because despite what PE is hoping, Star Trek fans will probably be the biggest player base for this game, and ususaly ST fans are a bit picky about the lore.

To be honest I dont care if something is a bit off, but (for example) like in SWG jedi were added as a playable character, it completely ruined the SW lore. Jedi were extinct. So if they make Borg playable that will also ruin the game, not simply because its another alpha class, but because Borg think as one and players cant do that. Players do what they want, Borg dont.

Sorry I mentioned jedi so much, its just the easiest thing I could think of that people could relate too.

Economy doesnt really have to involve money. It can involve other aspects of trading and payment. Perhaps people can trade Federation Points (cant think of a good name, the stuff u earn, like merit) for items, or trade minerals they find  in space (or ground) for items. Theres also that mention of some type of credit by the devs. Hopefully the economy will be player driven as I think those do the best, really makes the game feal like theres a community.

Anyways, as the Federation being a communist entity, not so.

I just wanted to post this because I wanted people to know there are smaller forms of PvP that will be available in the game. There wont be faction vs. faction pvp at launch though, and thats the type everyone really wants. The type of PvP available at launch is dueling, arena fighting, and ships-ship fighting (dueling with ships). At least that is what I have gathered from Dev posts and I've been following this game for a while now.

There still wont be faction vs. faction pvp however at LAUNCH, and theres a reason for this. They wont be able to add as much content to both factions if they have to develop them at the same time. Right now the game is going to focus on the Federation (Star Trek focused on it) and their mission of peace. They plan on adding other factions in expansion packs. Some people might also say that it doesnt matter if they work on one or two factions, and to them I ask for you to rethink about that, puttting in the point about not being able to provide as much content for both.

Anyways, I just wanted people to realize this because I was going through some threads here (dont come here much) and people are saying there is NO PvP. I want faction vs. faction pvp also but I also realize why they wont be able to provide it unless they aquire a larger dev team, and might I remind you this company is working on two games currently and wont receive a lot of money until 2008 (Gods and Heroes).

I thought the music sounded pretty nice, pluas the graphics and the exciting aspect of the mmo. to be honest though I only watched the pvp the most lol, didnt care about the first half much.

So SOE STILL is the publisher, they just want to hide that fact. Personally, i dont care, if the game is good, i will play, doesnt matter who is what. As long as it isnt ultima online.......

If SoE is still handling marketing and retail distribution, then how exactly are they not publishing it anymore? Seems like they are publishing it, but PE is trying to be shady about it.

This makes absolutey no sense.  The only thing that changed?  GNH stopped SOE from being listed?

For the few who have trouble making all the funny little letters make sense, let me clarify it for you.

PE is now self-published.

This means that they will be paying more for SOE to make some ads and slap out some cds in pretty boxes (marketing and distribution for those who are uninformed).

It means SOE has no say as to when the game gets released, as they can not put any pressure of the "Look for another publisher unless you release now" crap. They get no credit for the game except for being able to draw pretty pictures for ads and make pretty boxes for cds to go in.

It also means SOE has no legal claim to the game if it fails, unlike they did with VG. SOE is putting none of their money into GnH, therefore they have nothing to collect.

Does that help you understand, now?

Well, except for the fact that being a publisher means EXACTLY; bring a product to retail and marketing said product. SoE is still doing this. So, again, how exactly is PE being self published when SOE is doing the marketing and taking it to retail, which isby definition is publishing.

If you bring a product to retail and do marketing its called publishing. Look it at up. You obviously are the one who is confused by small words.

I think they are changing it so youll see PE on the cover when you buy it and you wont see SOE. But that's just my take on it, im not really sure if thats what will happen. However before I was assuming you would see PE and SOE's name on the cover. Anyways, I guess we wont know til they come out with the cover art or something :P

Even though its already been said, I'll say it also. LucasArts brought down Star Wars Galaxies as did SOE. I would also like everyone to realize SOe devs and SOE publishers are DIFFERENT. SOE isnt touching the dev aspect of this game at all, they are only marketing it and SOE has a great marketing group so in a way I'm glad they are doing it.

By the way, SOE recently let veterans come back to SWG for free to see how the game has turned out. Interesting that so many people were asking for it and yet there arent tons of people thanking them. Instead people continue to bash them until they get what they want. So if you dont want to play GnH just because SOE is "tainting" it then so be it, I for one will go and play this game to see if it is good or not.

Im gonna try it. Comon..you get to go back to SWG for free!!! I was tempted to go back earlier but then I remembered I had to pay the ppl who ruined SWG to play it again.

To be honest SWG was one of the best MMOs out there when it came out despite the bugs and problems, maybe theyll make a similar SWGII in the future.

The writer did seem a tad bit biased but it wasnt bad. I've enjoyed the shores of Evendim. I have not heard a complaint from a minstrel yet, and I've been grouped with a couple since the update. They seem perfectly content and they didnt complain. The new areas are really well done, like the Gauradan, I enjoyed them a lot. I was suprised how she didnt mention the fix to rain and snow, (good fix).

Now to point out a post...

Lukain - "

1: 50% of the zone is water " so its not as big a zone as people make out & the water takes 5 times as long to cross than running on land

1. Your point? I dont care if its big or small, its free and its wonderfully designed, the large lake, its islands and the beauty of it. The only part I dont like is they need a boat service :p
2: Horse nerf " yet another screw the 98% of the player base to stop the 2% of farmers

2. Im not really aware of this "nerf" and havent heard people complain about it, but seeing as how I dont know much about it I cant say ur true or not.
3: Shout removed "No reason given & boy are guardians pissed"

3. Again, not real sure about this, I have a bunch of guardian friends who havent complained during missions, etc...
4: 50% of solo quests can't be soloed ..with some requiring you to kill elite mobs with 6k Morale

4. Umm, what level are you doing them at and what level are the quests? Ive been able to solo just about every mission that doesnt have a fellowship thing on it, actually Im having trouble thinking of a mission that wasnt soloable and was supposed to be solable.
5: Lets see how many Mobs we can cram in the zone & on the roads " way to crowded"

5.This part I sort of agree with, although its easier to find your mobs, it does seem they crammed in everything on the Eastern side.
6: Chat Bug got worse " been in the game since day one "

6. They said they are and will be fixing this, to be honest I dont even know what this bug is, my chat has been fine since a couple days before launch.
7: same old quest  " go kill X number of mobs  or Kill "Insert Mob name here "  only savior in regards to quest is the Riddles

 7. There do seem to be a bit of X number quests, but Ive noticed a lot of other types, like killing a type of person, searching encampents on the Western shores, tricking giants, etc.... I'd say the non-X quests outnumber the X quests, but again, I hate killing X number of things so every mission that does this pisses me off :p
8:  you die on the far east side of zone & it puts you on the far west  with a 10-15 min trip back to your  fellowship/spot

8. I've noticed this also, however there is a respawn point on the East side, I've seen people respawn on the East bu I remember I died a couple times and spawned on the West, so it is a bug they need to fix.
9: Only 9 new mobs  & some theres only ONE of ...

9. Its an update...............
10: Nothing exciting , no new character slot , more bank space , better lff tools , improvment to the UI "worst UI of any major MMO"

Do you even know what the heck an update is? Its not an expansion, again...NOT AN EXPANSION, its set on one major thing. Each big update in an update focuses on a major thing, if they are gonna put character slots in an update!!! wow...well have 10 character slots by the time they finish Eriador!!!! Character slots is for expansions....
11: losing your buffs every time you come of your mount ..

11. I havent encountered this problem, but I am aware of it and it does need to be fixed...kinda annoying for my fellowship.

"

In EQ2 someone thought my male character was a female....guess that proves Ahrilil is a feminine name and the high elves in EQ2 are women-looking (lipstick, blushy, etc..)
Lol wonderful. Thanks for the laugh.

I couldnt find the game when it came out, then I went on a trip and when I got back I finally got a copy and funny enoughI joined the same day Shadowfire started (forget date, I just remember the announcement). So I joined Shadowfire. Ahhh...the good ol' days. I havent played an MMO yet that brought back the feel that SWG had. The community was great in that game, very active. I'm hoping for another StarWars MMO in the near future (KOTOR maybe?). I stopped playing I think last year...long time after NGE came. When I left the game was headed uphill though...but it was still too quiet and most of my friends left. 200-300 friends, I was lucky to find one of them online at a given time.

Skauna Reki - Shadowfire - Rifleman/Smuggler - Only grinded in the game twice (Slicing and Spices) - Rebel Colonel (not that it meant anything lol)

That's probably what will happen. Although I'm hoping there is plenty of RP on the server I'm on hehe.

But there are some things in the books that were in the movie so it might get a bit confusing. For instance, the Hobbit Rinvendel is described a bit differently than the LotR Rivendel, the one in the game is more like the Hobbit version, I think I would have perfered the LotR book version, but that is being picky.
