Saw this coming from beta....

It's sad really... DDO suffered from 2 key design flaws:

1) They tried to make an online quest generator into an MMORPG rather than adding quests to an MMORPG.

2) They didn't add anything to the game that would make it an "MMO" it's just a big online dungeon generator with pre-created 'dungeons' that players can do over and over and over again.  I don't even like calling them 'quests' because no matter how many times you do them you can keep doing them over and over.  There's nothing 'persistent' about the world... at all.  Sure there are a couple 1 shot quests but nothing like a regular MMORPG here.

The other real problem is a development flaw:

The dungeons are not created equal... and never have been.  There are certain key dungeons in the game which drop certain items which players desire far above any other item in the game.  As a result those dungeons tend to get 'done to death' which bores the hell out of most players very quickly.  How many complaints have been made over time that 'we do the same dungeon again and again'?  Yeah, it's their own fault... but it's also the fault of the developer for placing ALL desireable content into those few dungeons rather than 'spreading the wealth'.

It's also the developer's fault for making DDO a "monty haul" game (to steal a phrase from my AD&D past).  You are NOBODY in DDO without magic items... it's really rather sad.  In most AD&D Campaigns with a GOOD GM.  Magic Items are RARE... in the best ones I've played they're so rare that you'd be lucky to get your mits on a +1 sword before you hit level 9 or 10 let alone some of the crazy crap you get in DDO.

It's not a BAD game.. .it's just... badly implemented....

No world to explore, just 'dungeons'.  No player market worth mentioning, it's all npc price controlled..... no housing... no pets.... no point other than 'get to the next level'.    DDO had so much potential coming out the gate... it's sad to see those of us who were in the Beta proved right.  It's just not a game that has any real longevity to it.  And Turbine STILL doesn't get it..... what amazes me is everything they did WRONG in DDO they turned around and did RIGHT in LOTRO.... LOTR isn't perfect but wow... what a difference these two titles are.  LOTRO is engaging, engrossing, has equally good quests and a very good plot line if you choose to follow it.  Whereas DDO is just.... empty feeling.

Hard to believe the same company makes both these titles... then again it was hard to believe the same company made AC1 and AC2 as well....   Owell... it's a good thing for Turbine that LOTRO is a success so far.  Hopefully they'll learn from that and start modifying DDO To be what it should have been.  DDO just isn't a game that's worth a monthly fee as it stands now.  If it were like NWN where you buy it and then can play it whenever you feel like... it'd be much much better.  But with a monthly fee?  Just not worth it.

Server merges aren't going to save the game.  Only Turbine can save the game... by either keeping it on life support with profits from LOTRO or by slowly adding in vital parts to any MMORPG that are what make the MMORPG's worth a monthly fee.... they need to give DDO "life" so to speak.  Right now it's just dungeons... there's no world to grab you or hold your interest.  The dungeons are cool... the first time... but after that it's just repetition.  And since there's no real point to getting 'max level' the repetition factor gets old for players fast.

I liked this game, more then likely due to my love of SCI-FI and space battles. I got past the learning curve, or I believe I did, and hey - the game was fun. Thing is; I logged on, and found myself with NOTHING to do. I had a Merlin, nicely outfitted, etc - I was ages away from getting anything better then a Merlin (Not due to isk, due to training times) so my motivation level dropped like a rock and I quit.

I couldn't stand a chance in PvP. Missions were too easy. The game was just going nowhere quick, and I felt like no matter how much I played in one day, I was going to progress at the same speed no matter what.

If I come back, am I going to be faced with this exact same issue once again? Or have they done something to the game where time played actually equals progression in one way or the other.

Ok I'm going to ignore all the folks who decided to insult you or flame you for whatever reasons.
Some basic questions:
What is it that you were training for that made you think you were "ages" away from getting anything better?  Once you are in a merlin you already have frigates 3.. which means in 30 minutes you can be flying a cormorant (Caldari Destroyer).  It means that in just over 1 day (training time for frigates 4) you can be flying a cruiser.....

What was it that you were training?  Have you checked out EVEMon:  http://evemon.battleclinic.com and used it to perhaps figure out what you want to fly next and it will tell you exactly what skills you need to train, how long they will take, and even suggest some learning skills to speed up the process.

What is it you want to do?  At the point your character is at there is NOTHING that will take 'ages' to train.  At most a day or so....
Also: Are you making sure that you always have something in training?  If you aren't then you're just hurting yourself.

just because you can fly a ship doesn't mean you can fly it well.  cruisers are meant to fire heavy weapons, and all ships need electronics and engineering....  It takes several weeks to fly a cruiser well or even a destroyer....

Its best not to just fly a ship because you can because its a death trap until you can fly it well..........

really you should get the basic skills to fly a destroyer and do level 1 missions while you work on learning skills and stat skills, then when you have enough isk from missioning, buy the adv stat skills....then move on to cruisers on up.....    missioning isn't the only way to build isk, but IMHO, its the least boring....even pirating is kind of boring...I remember taking my ibis into 0.0, and getting blown to bits from bored pirates in 0.0, just hoping I'm an envoy of a bigger group trying to take over their space, cause they are bored stiff without a fight....

Actually you can be in a perfectly well fitted cruiser within a week of starting the game now.  Taram is absolutely correct.  Not sure where you are getting your figures from but when I started EVE (before the changes to the new player experience) I was flying a Caracal less than 2 weeks into the game and doing just fine on level 2 missions in it.  And no, you don't need'heavy missiles' or 'heavy weapons' for a cruiser.  You can train assault missiles to level 1 and they'll be more than adequate for level 1 or 2 missions.  You shouldn't even be thinking about heavy launchers till you're doing level THREE missions.  Maybe fit ONE  heavy launcher on level 2 missions where there might be one or 2 cruisers in them (total) but you certainly don't NEED to.  I never had heavies when I did level 2's.  Not till weeks later anyway, after I'd trained up various missile support skills like rapid launch, projection, etc.   As for guns?  Same story goes.  And medium rails/projectiles/lasers isn't exactly time consuming to train.  Train all the turret support skills to 3 (Takes maybe 2 days) and then train medium turrets and you're fine for level 2's.

And learning skills/stat skills are the same thing.  Train those in between the other stuff.  There is absolutely no need to rush to train them till you're at a point where you're ready to take a break and just blow through them.  When I was doing level 2's in my cruiser is when I did mine.

WOOPS :)  Missed the part about "All dwarf"
I'll start Bragnor (my typical dwarf) Not sure what he'll be yet.

I think the world is about to end.

Someone actually referred to EverQuest as a 'smaller MMORPG'.

It only took what?  9 years :)

MMMM
I'll wag a guess here:
1) It's stable
2) It runs smoothly even at "minimum requirements"
3) It's pretty much bug-free
4) Excellent attention to detail within the game
And, most importantly:
5) It's FUN (well for most anyway)

And where you come off saying the graphics aren't top notch I don't know.  They're equal to or better than anything else on the market as is the sound.

If you don't like it, that's cool.  But the game is highly rated because it's a solid title that gives exactly what it promised to give.

Greetings!

In the past few years of gaming and forming and managing Guilds, I have come across what I believe is a change in the attitudes people have toward their Guilds.  When I played Everquest full-time, it was common for a person who joined a Guild to remain in that one Guild for the person's lifetime of gaming.  The only reason why some one would leave a Guild (typically but not always) was because the Guild merged with a  Guild or because the individual stopped playing.

In my experience with guild dynamics, which dates back to the late 1980s in MU*'s and NWN on GeNIE and various other early online games as well as more modern games starting with M59, UO, EQ1 etc.  I have seen exactly the opposite.  While there absolutely were people who would choose a guild and stay with it for their entire life with the game that was never the 'norm'.  Most people would move through several guilds before finding one that was really for them.

Also, all guilds which have fallen on hard times have had numerous members leave.  It's a natural phenomena in games which require great dedication to excel in.

I would also be interested to know, if you would like to share, why do you join a Guild?  What do you look for in a Guild when you join?  What features are important to you as a gamer when selecting a Guild to join?

Personally when I look for a guild I look for a group of people who think like I do.  That the REAL WORLD is far more important than the game and they will respect it if you suddenly have to leave, or can't stay on for any great length of time regularly because of kids, job, wife, girlfriend, etc.  I look for a mature group of people who don't overuse shortcut speach (leetspeak) or foul language.  And, of course, I look for an organized group of people who work together and work efficiently and as a team.  While I don't always have lots of time to be on when I AM on I expect people who are playing with me to either know what they're doing or be willing to learn.  Being new is ok... refusing to listen to those who've been around isn't.   Basically I look for:
Maturity
Effectiveness
Friendliness
Fun-seeking
People who realize that, at the end of the day:  It's just a game.

And furthermore, when the Guild is under pressure, or failing to achieve its goals, do you remain loyal?  If you remain loyal do you undertake measures to contribute to the success of the Guild when it is struggling to accomplish its goals?

Unfortunately this is the most common reason people leave guilds that they joined unless they have personal friends within the guild or have formed lasting bonds with the members of the guild.  This has been true with every gaming guild, both MMO, online, offline, tabletop, etc.  When the going gets tough the fair-weather members get going.  Personally it depends on whether I feel there's a realistic chance of turning things around when this happens.  In some cases there just isn't.  In others there is.

Thank you!

You're welcome

I apprecaite the benefits it presents to player run organizations and for the social aspect.  With all that in mind I personally hate it.  The rise of VOIP communications as a gaming component has the potential to ruin MMORPG games for me.

My PC is in a common area of the house. I'm a father of a 10 year old and a 7 week old and my wife and I share a room with a TV and said computer.  There are lots of times where its practical for me to do a quest or run an Eve mission but in those same  times it may not necessairly be as practical to have a headset on.

I know im a dieing breed of gamer and that everyone likes chatting but is there anyone else that shares my sentiment?  On top of all of these issues sometimes the last thing I want to do at teh end of the day is talk more.  Am I alone?  It seems to me that the future of player run orgs in MMO gaming is directly tied with VOIP chat. Although I fully appreciate the benefits this presents in accomplishing tasks as a group I ask myself is there any other way?

Unless you're in PVP Voice comms are completely un-necessary in EVE.  As a matter of fact, unless PVP is involved there's no need for voice comms in any MMORPG.  It's a nice add-on feature that is sometimes nice to use and others not... but it's not necessary.

Posts like this are silly

"From what I here"

IE: I haven't played it, and I haven't got a clue, but I'll chime in anyway because it's fun to do

I've played both.

Vanguard has lots of great ideas in it but the implementation is weak.  While everything works you need a monster of a system to run the game and even on the best rigs it is STILL laggy.  It's got massive performance issues.

Also the world is immense and has a very low player population so it's hard to meet other players in it.

The quests are ok but it's mostly a level grind like EQ1 was (which is what they were going for).

LOTR has impeccable implementation but a slight content problem for anyone who's a power gamer.  If you're one of those players who puts in 8 hours a day on MMORPG's and levels as fast as humanly possible then you'll burn through the content in LOTR:O very quickly.  On the plus side the graphics (imo) are much nicer to look at and the performance is top notch, even on older systems and the quests are excellent.  The storyline is quite engaging and overall the game is 'fun'.  But like I said, powergamers will burn through the content very quickly.

So:  Powergamer with a good rig:  Vanguard
        Casual or Role-Player:  LOTR:O

Since when this forums turned into bunch of people that post here just to insult everyone and everything.
I mean i can understand bashing a game you dont like , or even criticising a certain playstyle or guild, or company.

But today it seem people just go into various forum posts and write hateful angry messages unrelated to anything.

I have respect for many of posters on this site...but it seems most of them have given up. There is just to much random hate ...

I really hope this is not the end of mmorpg.com community

MMORPG.com community has been on a downhill slide for over a year now.  It's one of the main reasons I don't post nearly as often as I once did.

While you are training the skills you need to become nicely competitive, you can do one of two things. You can stockpile all of the ore that you mine which will give you a nice surplus when you finally start doing mass production, or you can sell of the majority of what you mine, giving you a pretty stable income.

Even though you might not be directly creating ships/mods/ammo to sell on the market, supplying ore and minerals is certainly a nice foot in the door.
I'd also agree in general with what LeJohn says. I will disagree with the time. Basic Manufacturing and transport can be accomplished with in a month from your starting character. This will set you up with Industry 4-5, Production efficency 4, racial Indy 3 or 4. This consists of the vast majority of skills you need. After that go for the learnings mixed with additional industrial skills.

Agree.  My wife is already a very accomplished T1 ship producer and T2 ship reseller.

She's been playing for exactly 2.5 months.  She'll have a freighter within the month as well.

To clear somethings up, BoD has many alt hauler corps that do their hauling (as do other large 0.0 alliances). We wardeced all of them and they started crying because they couldn't get their complex loot (you know the ones that spawn every hour?) to market.

We have over 200 wardecs presently, we did this as a protest to the change. I've been in Privateers since the begining of this year, about 3-4 months.

I used to PvP in 0.0 for over a year, it was a boring lag fest. Sitting on bubbles all day = boring, blob warfare = boring/lag fest, PoS warfare = boring/lag fest. These are my personal opinions on 0.0 warfare and it is the reason Privateers exist, ex 0.0 PvPers bored s***less by it.

I think CCP should've concentrated on making 0.0 PvP more attractive and accessible to the playerbase, rather than making empire wars less. As it stands 80-90% of the playerbase aren't into 0.0, because it just doesn't deliver. If 0.0 was fun we'd be there fighting and saving cash, but it isn't. It would've been better for the game all round to make 0.0 more fun and more practical for the average player, rather than nerfing their fun to force them into a BoD lag fest/blob/node crash.

In the end I play EVE for fun, if they make 0.0 more fun I'll be there doing the same as I did in empire. As it stands 0.0 doesn't have enough traffic, fleet warfare doesn't work as most of us don't enjoy slideshows. Also the game is balanced in favour of alliances like BoD as they have DEVs playing with them, why bother to fight them since we know for a fact all alliances with DEVs use them to their advantage? So for now I'll be going back to mission running in empire once the wars end, it's just more fun than 0.0 at the moment!

This is utter crap.  PA has WarDecced every major alliance in the game and numerous non alliance corps.  My wife is in a newbie mining corp and THEY got decced.  I know for a fact that nobody in that corp is an alt-hauler for anyone else.  Care to try again?

PA, simply put, pissed off too many players with their shinanigans.  To be completely honest most 0.0 corps don't use an 'alt hauler corp'.  They train up a noob corp alt to fly a hauler and haul their crap to a lowsec system then have it jumped out to 0.0 in an alliance or corp carrier.  The whole point of an alt hauler (yes, I have one) is so that it CANNOT be war-decced.  Kind of makes your entire point invalid.

PA abused a game mechanic.  CCP responded by fixing it.  Just because you don't like it doesn't mean a thing.  And, frankly, if you think your silly little highsec carebear alliance was hurting bob (or any other 0.0 alliance for that matter) you're deluding yourselves.

yes
have a 2nd ship.  I use a Hurricane with 5 cargo expanders in the lows and a afterburner, 2 tractors and 6 salvagers in the highs.  Mids stick whatever you want, it really doesn't matter.

After you run the mission go back in the salvaging/loot ship.
Have a ball scooping up all the loot.  And watch the isk just ROLL in when you sell the salvage (or you could keep it to make your own rigs, nice thing about missions is after a while you have ever component you need for just about any rig).

I kinda liked NWN 2 once I got used to the wierd camera/controls, and honestly I don't understand why everybody else seem to hate it, but then again I've always been accused of having bad taste in pretty much everything.

Hmm I could have sworn I saw a BioWare symbol on the box... wait.... why yes, right here on the back cover... Along with Obsidian we see a BioWare logo.  They did collaborate on it, thankyouverrymuch.  Obsidian was the main project member, however, so I'll give you that.

Bottom line:  BioWare flat out REFUSED to do a KOTORII.  I just find it odd that people continue to speculate that they're now going to do a 180 and do a Star Wars MMORPG.  Frankly if I were BioWare I wouldn't go within 200 million kilometers of any LucasArts Project.  LEC is a horrible producer of games.  The vast majority of games they have released were utter crap.  Or mis-managed (See SWG for a prime example).
