mostly swg emu. which is sad that it is the best true mmorpg out there right now, but it really isn't even close.

i did't have an argument, i had an opinion.
you had the argument and maybe its a fine one.. but not to my post, which is what you quoted.

i was talking about new player, brand new players trying to learn a game.

you came back with an example of a pre made group of players who have been playing the game 10 years, doing well on a private server.

i mean, seriously its like if we were arguing wether 5 years olds should all get trophy's in little league and alex rodrigez chimes in 'no handholding! i don't want to share my paycheck'. absolutely not relevant to the post you quoted.

and it doesn't matter how you feel about it, or how 'niche' this game wants to be, if you end up with ~1500 players max at peak times who ever play it(like daoc has been for 8 years, barring a few month stretch when the 3 classic servers brought back thousands for a short while) then its not going to be able to sustain a devoted team and its going to fail.

and not to nitpick but please refer to the mmorpg.com rules and regulations, and try to refrain from naming private servers

Unofficial Servers
Discussing or advertising unofficial servers or emulators for MMOs is not permitted on the MMORPG.com forums. These servers are against the Terms of Service of the original game, and violate the intellectual propriety rights of the game's publisher and developer.

One thing I would like is some sort of 'matching' system, or something to make it more 'new player' friendly so after the first few months, people can still reasonably pick up the game and play.
I know most don't want it but hear me out.
I know there is no levels, so we don't know much about progression or if there would be different tiers, or anything outside of the main frontier..so who knows if its even relevant

As a huge fan and longtime player of DAoC, I'm sure most of you are like me..went off to play dozens of other games, came back, repeat.

A lot of times I did that it was to a bad game, but I met good friends. I would bring them to DAoC, and they would get the hang of it for 20 lvl's or so..I'd sort of gear them a little bit for their first 'realish' rvr in thid..

and of course, a 1v1 fight or a small group fight would leave them feeling so outmatched they would be scared away. People permanantly in thid, buffed, potions, spellcrafted to perfection, just daily nonstop picking off the new playerbase one by one.

You can't have that, and I did it myself so I'm not really casting stones but countless times I lost friends who were just thinking they finally reached that level to try the famous 'thid' and it ended up being such a buzzkill for them they never stuck around to really get into the game.

It doesn't seem there will be any sort of levels but there has to be a way to make it new player friendly, because DAoC was about the furthest thing from it. And while its not out yet..the first so many months will be fine, it will get to the same point most likely. I couldn't imagine many players picking up the game 3-5 years ago, knowing no one, and sticking it out unless they really kissed some major butt to some richer old players.

SWG had one thing not many (any?) games since had. a crapload of girls and housewives who played religiously and never killed a thing.

housing was a big part of that(as was entertainers early on). not only could guilds build their own cities, but a group of 3-4-5 friends could make a pretty awesome little town with a couple houses, harvesters, stores whatever.

in fact its the last game my old lady played religiously, she'd spend hours on her 'botique' making clothes, decorating it just so.
people would stop in and browse, hire her out for clothes for weddings or whatever on occasion. without the player merchants and housing to display them, that really wouldn't have happened.
in most games today its, yeah pick tailor..grind to 500 in a few days, make mage armor and inventory bags, put them on AH, go kill stuff.

i enjoyed the dancing and musicians in swg and don't see the harm in them at all, but i think you might be looking with fond eyes at it a little.

1. for some people maybe they were a social hub, but for the most part it was people grinding the skill afk. if there was one person in your group of 20 that was actually at their computer when you needed training, it was rare.
people had their main characters or whatever, and usualy had another account for the mind buffs. when they turned in for the night, or went to eat dinner, they logged on the entertainer and let him/her get exp.

2. the buffs were scripted, no one was actually sitting there solo buffing hitting buttons to flourish over and over. i'm not sure you could get many people to sit there for hours doing it in todays 'rush through content' mode.

3. since the old days of swg(pre cu) and daoc(pre toa), a lot more people have come onto the mmo scene. a lot of different type of people than the ones that used to join a 'multiplayer' game to talk, play, and get along with *gasp* other people. now most of the people are there to either kill people less experience than them, or powergrind for the best loot/money so they can tell everyone how much better they are.
it was rare in those days for someone to, for instance, heal at a musician and not tip them. today i think it would be rare to get a tip.

i don't know, like i said i liked the class back then. i'd like to hear how it would be implemented so enough people would sit there all day, because i was not a fan of the 'afk the day away' style of it.

Test drive

people who are bored and aren't going to miss 60 bucks, which is a lot of people.

Lol so many edits. But I disagree. Career caster and tanks should have as much a say in how stealth works as career mdps.
Ok thats fine, let stealthers have a say in magic and tanking.

1.  Alright tanks, so you can have armor for 30 seconds once you hit your armor on button, then it goes away and you can't reuse it for another 30 seconds.  Use it wisely.  Maybe position yourself well then get out, because well after that 30 seconds, your basically  naked.  that includes your shield and equipped armor.  This isnt a buff, its a 30 second privledge to wear your armor and shield, then when it runs out, i want to take it away.

2.  Casters, you have 15 seconds after hitting your "flame on" button to use magic, then after that you are burned out and can't use magic again for 30 seconds, even if you didnt use any mana, your still burned out.  so you have 15 seconds to cast as much as possible, ieven if you have the capability to cash 30 bolts, well you got enough time to cast 3, good luck.

You like me sticking my finger in your pie?  You like someone who knows nothing about your class trying to take away a core component?  Of course not, who does?

this may be the most ridiculous thing i have ever read. did i miss where someone suggested that rogues not only should have timed invisibility, but also lose their daggers/bow after 30 seconds? that made no sense and sounded like a flaming pile of QQ

and for the record, im fine with steath the way it was in original daoc. yes you can afk for as long as you want usually, just not anywhere stupid.
but i'm not really a people person as i grew older and don't like to group. i want to fight on my terms, when i want, when the other person has no clue its coming. its just way easier that way and i enjoy easy.

His role would be to move around the crowds and attack key targets. Whether it's an enemy that's low on health running away to get himself healed, or if it's the healers themselves that were too careless to position themselves properly.

do you mean move around WITH crowds(of fellow stealthers) and key targets would be any target trying at all to solo/small group, or run past a chokepoint ?

I'm not sure what to think about this one... the kickstarter program is a bit of a turn off for me as well.  However I love that fact it's going to include "old school" elements as indicated by the new teaser.

kickstarter does make me think its going to be subpar technically, sort of like a diploma from wvu isn't really the same thing as a real college.

another bright idea that won't pan out IMO, but being that daoc is my favorite game of all time they will get money out of me and many others.

Originally posted by Sideras You do realize that the IP is now owned by EA, right? Meaning whatever hopes you might have about that game is pretty much dead. First and foremost they probably don't even realize the game would have any potential and secondly they would fuck it up anyways. Same goes for anyone hoping for a new Ultima game.
100% true. Sigh.

EA can't figure out MMOs.  Even when they hire/buy experienced developers, their games are invariably stillborn.  I have to assume that there's something in their corporate culture that's incompatable with the genre.

They also like to crap on their classic IPs.  If you loved DAoC, hope that EA forgets about it.

By way of illustration, please induldge me in a little gaming-related anecdote:  The Ultima series was my first (CRPG) love.  I couldn't tell you how many hours of my childhood I spent on my IBM PC Jr. searching for mantras and runes.  I played through all nine games and most of the spinoffs.  My first MMO was UO, which I played for over four years -- longer than most people spend in college.   I even met my wife there.  The series is important to me.

A new single-player Ultima, with the right care and attention, could be the next Skyrim.  Instead, we got "Lords of Ultima," the bastard offspring of Farmville and Evony.  If the stars align, fans of the series might also get a flash-based, microtransaction-driven Diablo clone someday.  Whenever I stop to think about what EA has done to this series, I feel like I just ran into my high school sweetheart working as a lot lizard.

I'm not sure it is 100% true. Sure if MJ and company make a game called 'dark age of camelot 2' they could probably be sued, but I don't think EA in any way owns the rights to the historical/mythological/fictional places and names.

Seems it would be pretty easy to make a game in a very similar world, with the same realm names etc, without any legal problems. Hibernia wasn't a name invented for a game, it's a classical Latin name for Ireland. Albion, the oldest known name of Great Britian. The places in the game are real places for the most part, or at the very least prt of very old mythology. EA doesn't own that.

The Secret World doesn't own the 'IP of the world' just because they use real world places.

lineage the bloodpledge ~2 years
daoc on and off for many years
swg a couple stints maybe ~2 years

lotro a few months..
thats the only other game i bothered to get more than 1 char to max lvl.

playing nothing the past year or so because everything good is either gone or just too old, and everything new and shiny sucks.

Originally posted by ahumata Not sure why the list still hasnt been provided. Then again if it had, a lot of people who say "Eve, Perpetuum, this, that" would probably realized they're wrong. I had an active account from 98 to 2008, didnt play much after AoS but still did, so I have no idea what they put in since 2008. More stuff no doubt: I'm putting this UO list so that people can compare against it and soon find out how short they come on options offered by those other games since UO.   In UO, besides killing stuff you could: - Stealth around picking locked chests in dungeons. - Herd, Tame, train and sell pets - Go fishing, fish up rares and lost treasure (the bigger stuff involved fighting) - Grow plants - Build, decorate and sell houses. That includes creating new decoration elements through optical illusion, which was a UO art in itself. - Snoop people's backpacks and steal their stuff if you felt so inclined - Hunt for rares, trade them - Harvest all kinds of resources (obviously) - Cook, tinker, make potions, furniture, clothes you name it, whether it was for use, trade or vanity. Crafting is unrivaled at this point. - Get on your boat, sail around and explore - Do a lot of social stuff that was in some way or other supported by game mechanics and not just total "let's pretend" - Move heavy objects around so to create improvised structures - Craft and enchant and otherwise modify (color, name) magical items with various properties to your liking - Salvage and scavenge stuff from anywhere. Pick magical reagents from the wild, smelt or otherwise unmake items, etc. - Build libraries and rune libraries (allows players to travel around the world from a central location) - Run a shop - Scam people in a hundred ways - Trap and lock boxes and untrap and unlock them, which gave a lot of opportunities for stunts and antics - Make monsters fight for you so you wouldnt have to do it yourself (I know, technically it's fighting)   I'm forgetting a lot of stuff, not to mention the creative things people would always end up doing with the game mechanics that were clearly not intended in the first place and gave the game that sense of freedom.   Good luck matching that to any game released since.
You could do a lot of that in SWG go figure though, the two titles shared quite a few developers.

agreed, pretty much all that and more in SWG. so while most games fall way, way short i would say the clear cut answer to the original question is false.

agree 100% with the shire.

also , singing island-lineage the bloodpledge (maybe talking island? been 12 years since i played lol)

bottom line, you have to try it to know.

some people love it, some hate it..

some like me think it is an ok game, but just another boring run of the mill mmorpg that we have all played too much of the past 8 years.

i am not faulting anyone for liking it, but i didn't last my entire free month.

i enjoy crafting , the crafting here is very stupid, you don't even do it actually. i enjoy diversity and being a little unique, there is none of that here. i enjoy open worlds and having a choice on what to do when i log in. here there is no choice. you go do the quests and missions that match your level until you level up.

i haven't gone back in a year or 2 but when i do, i get one toon and take them through classic zones, the early quests etc.
another one i take through catacombs because i find those areas fun, especially hibernias for some reason.

its pretty fast, plenty fast enough if you like to explore and quest..just straight grinding in the big bonus xp zones like BG's worked well but classic has bonus xp too. (not as much i think, or used to be that way)..and no chance of being randomly ganked by 10 year vets with tricked out lvl 19's, assuming they still exist for bored people.

nope. not going to happen, sorry.

another none of the above.

First was Lineage 1 'beta' back in early '97. played for a long while.

then short stop in ragnarok

then another long while in DAoC, whith a side sting in SWG because its the only mmorpg my wife ever would play. (horrah for non-forced socialization and not having to kill stuff 99% of the time)

only redeeming quality is the story if your into that, sort of.

after my first char i started a couple more..figured for the story. the sidequests once out of the starter zone were repeated and i got pretyt bored.

realized if i want a story, there are a lot of great books i have not read yet.

likewise, fine game for some i guess but its to the point i am bored and here instead of playing.

im not sure you have ever played an elder scrolls game.

10 hours in most people won't even start on the main quest yet..
