I must say, i think anyone who registered for Beta is probably getting included in this number. Technically, they are a registered account even if they did not pre-prder.
None-the-less, I believe this game will do well. If nothing else, it is well made and as sad as that sounds, its becoming all-too rare. |

I want a city to feel like a city. why can't I have one in any mmorpg?!
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 2/24/11 8:54:12 AM
There are several probel with cities in most mmorpgs, imho:
No sprawl: speaks for itself...the city simply does not cover enough land area. It is a postage stamp inside a region instead of a region unto itself.
Poor building scale: again, is obvious. You frequently buildings that are not meant to be entered, they are just decoration...and for good reason, because you probably couldn't fit inside! Again, FFXI has some nice scale in certain cities, like Jeuno:
![]()
Poor texture scale: A building might be sufficiently large, but then the artists slapped a brick texture that is simply the wrong scale for what one would expect for a building of said size. The results is that the building looks like a miniature:
Poor Texture Scale = Stormwind
Decent Texture Scale = RIFt Village
![]()
AH and bank Hub: Cities should be so huge that they have a TON of stuff to do...quests, combat areas, shops, AH's Banks, Sewers, Player Housing, etc. Not just be the 'Player Services' Hub of the game. In a large city, every type of gameplay that is offerred for a given title should be available in one form or another.
Not enough Denizens: This is arguable a bad idea because of its impact on resources, but cities should have just a metric Eff-ton of people roaming around. The great part is that cities are cluttered, greatly cutting down a players Line of Sight, This should make is possible for a players client-side app to only draw 'Filler' NPCs within the viewable area (Frustrum).

Assasin's Creed is one of hte best games out there for really capturing the look and feel, the span and scale of a real human city outside the modern timeframe. I wish more games would capture this...a city should not be a feature in a map zone...it really should be the whole map zone! They are huge!
You can travel to everything you see in this Image. Clearly this is possible in a game.
So I guess, why are cities always so lacking in fantasy MMORPGs?? They are a small gathering point for players but not a place to actually PLAY, if you understand me. Sure, if can be a quest hub..but can't it also be a combat zone for quests?
The City of Jeuno in FFXI really had the visual scale down.
It 'felt' like a city...buildiung scale was pretty accurate and made everything feel big and impressive. However, it's total area was reletively small and it never felt like a sprawling city like you see above (Assassin's Creeed Screenshot). It wasn't so large that you could get a quest in the Affluent area to steal back some jewelery from theives in the pesants quater, 4 miles away.
In fairness, I cannot think of any other game off the top of my head that really captured look, feel, visual scale and size of a historic city like Assassin's Creed. Does anyone else feel like we should be seeing this kind of effort put into the cities of hte mmorpg's we play? are we being shorted? Would they just become sprawling annoyances? Share your thoughts, while I leave you with a few, cool pix of some AC city shots.

My first RPG was Ultima IV...a game where your ultimate goal wasnt to kill a main, evil character, but to become a paragon of humanity. This was achieved through your actions, great and small.
I was looking forward to this game, where it was basically Ultima IV, en masse.
i guess you can never go home again. |

Rift's Soul System=When everyone is Special! No one is.

Originally posted by CzechGuy SWG used to have like 54 job classes, each with a set of skills. You could mix em up, be mostly a bounty hunter and carbiner with some Medic. It was fun...you could change your skills as you saw fit....and it didn't hurt the game. Anyway, even if they didn't let you have all souls, people would just roll alts to play new soul configurations. If its the same person pushing the mouse, please tell me what the real difference is here? By all means, limit yourself to your first three souls, don't let me stop you from having 'honest character development'....just don't get pissed at me for wanting to sample all the game has to offer without having a ton of frickin alts :-) By your line of thinking, every game should have one tank class, one healer class and thats it. Because that the end of the day, you either inflict damage, heal damage or some combination thereof....and since everyone, if given the choice, will boil down to clone-configurations, why bother with choice. Sorry, man, but this line of thinking is whats wrong with the country....'since we know what you are going to do anyway, we are going to deprive you of coice.' Thanks, but I can think for myself and enjoy the ability to be flexible and play how I feel at any given point in time. At the end of the day, it's just a game and it really comes down to entertainment and what that means to each person. There is NOTHING meaningful here expect that, while you play it, hopefully you are entertained. If placing arbitrary limits of choice upon yourself increases your fun-factor, go nuts, man. However, if placing Arbitrary limits of choice on everyone else increases your fun factor...then go into politics. (Sure, if you play soul arrangements that you simply enjoy, there will be Elites who complain that you do not have the 'perfect' build and not let you into their group....but when you are just trying to kick back and have some fun, do you really need that crap?) |

I know sex sells, but damn..lol |

RIFT is different because its a solid game that is not set in Azeroth. I like WoW, but I am just kind of tired of the lore...i know the world too well, been seeing those environments for years.
I want a game that is as solid and well made with a different story, different environments, just different.
This is why we who read sci-fi or fantasy books don't stop after one book....sure then next book will probably have more magic, more elves, more swords....but thats why we read it....however, it is expected the underlying story is the same.
Now, if you are someone who pays no attention to these aspects of a game, hten yea, this will simply feel like more of the same.
Stop. Read the stories. adsorb the lore. Take in the new world. Focus on the new, not the same. |

I have developed with Cryengine 2 before, so I have some concerned regardig its use for an MMORPG.
Made some serios games with it, but all FPS. It's just so horribly unoptimized.
Maye they are using '2.5' ...Warhead's Version. it was a bit cleaner. |
