Pretty sure this was the case for the original Darkfall (which is no more around).

But even if it would be true for DF:UW it can't be recommended for a longer experience ten 30 days and this is what most who start it conclude with.

They forgot to mention that DF had their peak population and reputation by the first year of Darkfall at 2009.

Since they didnt delivered the 2010 expansion their reputation went apeshit and the new game DF:UW isn't worth it anymore.

There is a lot to do while playing this game.

While chopping trees or mining stones or ore you can:

1. Wash the car

2. Take the dog for a walk

3. Catch a movie

4. Study

5. Work

6. Do the dishes.

Hell you can even take a nap.

When all these things are done you can go and kill the same mob type over and over 150 times for shitty loot, to get prowess.

Then repeat.

There is always something to do while playing Darkfall.

I think sandbox games just aren't for you. It seems like you'd prefer something that feeds you content and activities. The ESO beta is still going on; maybe you can hop in and give it a try.

Is this ironie ?

only as cynical remarks these activities could be qualified as sandbox.

ok,  lets give i wash my car, take dog for a walk , study and go to work which is what i do, can i call myself a sandbox expert now ?

As an sandbox expert i can tell you thats some very primitive sort of a sandbox what DF:UW offers. The very primitive type i ever found on any sandbox game i ever tried. (playing sandboxes since 1997)

Some of the posters here are overly harsh in their critism of the game, to the point of lying. DF1 is gone, despite the last remaining players loving the combat (myself included), a lot of people disliked the quake-style, classes combat. DFUW has improved on combat greatly for the masses.

I'm sorry, that's how it is and with the upcoming economic changes, the end-game will recieve real meaning.

sorry but classes are a main feature of the DF:UW.

original DF was build around skils.

Changes like the upcoming DF2010 changes for original DF ?  even if  implemented  like intoduced in the MVP recap,   DF:UW will still  have core flaws which can't be easily repaired.

The class system has to be replaced by a skill system and a armor specialization system first.

Then safezones have to be removed.

A alignment system has to be implemenetd and racial warafere has to be enabled.

Racial bonus and racial specialities and perks have to be implemented.

Chaos NPC cities have to be created for the rogue player.

Massive amount of islands and new landmass have to be added.

Crafting has to be revamped. all items in to the game have to be craftable including houses.  raw materials have to have attributes and come in different qualities. Mob loot should not include items just components needed for crafting.

Indef if you dislike df2 because you prefered df1, thats fine. But you must see the massive irony in your statement, by your own logic DF1 was a even worse game because it had even less active players.

Darkfall Unholy Wars is a horrible game.  That's why the game has around 100 active daily players and around 500 total active players.

What ?

True DF had thousands of players 8 months after launch.

Ho3 many times has to be repeated that the numbers you compare with the fresh and recently pubhished DF:UW and even a integrated DF:UW into Steam have been that low after  :

1.  1,5 years of no updates.

2. Announcements about wipe incoming

3. new game anounces which implies current game has no future.

Do this to DF:UW and then we speak again and compare again. Should we ?

The current playerbase numbers shows really that DF:UW failed. According to AV habbits it is time for all of these measures agin. It is time for a wipe of DF:UW and replacement of the current playerbase of DF:UW  with a more appropiate playerbase and support for playstyle for these genre which is MMORPG.

Things are coming down the pipe that will fundamentally improve the game.  AV is working on mob loot distribution/regionalization and a new territory control system, which I would expect within the next month or so.

The basic idea of the territory control system is agon will be carved up into a bunch of puzzle pieces that will be control points.  The control points will be villages, cities, hamlets (at this time).  Each region will have different buffs, which could be pve or crafting related.  If I take over the next region then I will get both regions buffs.  This will encourage alliances to control regions and expand their empire.

There are a number of other things in the works, but these two things have me the most excited.

PS:  I would strongly recommend playing UW as nothing else even comes close to being as good.

Something like this i expected to be added as withing the DF 2010 expansion package to DF1. It would have been the right step.

I imagined the controling clans of these "tiles" could customize the ruleset of the area what would  indeed look like player driven empire building, a long given promise. Question why the had to waste time with DF:UW ruining all of the game first instead of delivering just that on the basis of Darkfall ?

Now they need to remove all the DF:UW crap plus implement this good idea(s).

I know open world pvp is kind of the main feature, but I'm wondering what else the game has to offer.

Thanks.

DF:UW is not about anything beside mindless fights.

Everything else is subpar and made as  an afterthought.  Everything you have to do is centered around PvP or become a char that is viable for it.

The games forces only one playstyle,  that is PvP and everything else is shallow and not developed enough to justify it being a full MMORPG in the sense of viable alternative playstyles.

Eh, wtf are you on about? Your right about everything other than PvP isn't great, but the PvP very fucking far from mindless. PvP has meaning, you lose your shit when you die, you can lose your guild city when you lose in a PvP siege, your reputation as a PvP'er matters. Name another single modern game where the above is true. You just someone who sucked at it.

right i forgot about the epeen ..errm "reputation" factor in PvP.

Loot is worthless because everyone can craft everything (and will do so to get PP and become viable in PvP) and everything is not valuable because crafter can't craft anything specia  w..well because crafting isn't anything but shallow ..oh and the citys aren't valuable to fight over. Most things will be obtained while afk and even in safezones.

Nothing really matters in DF:UW..ah well..except..epeen of course. Your post especially confirm excalty this...my post is spot on considering OP asked also and  especially about content and activities BESIDE PvP and fights..

You can't lie to yourself about that, in these regards DF:UW offers litle to nothing ...

"endgame" is a fail concept for a MMORPG.

Since Archage is a sandpark i am also interested  if there is a difference to real MMORPG's content :

That is by entering the world you can experience and be part of "endgame" content.

Does Archeage prohibit you from visiting the 3 continent on lower lvl for example ?

The return of the bunny hoping.
Feel for you OP.  They just ruined  DF and this is not a full MMORPG game anymore.

Darkfall is easily the best MMO on the market right now.  Its got almost everything I want in an MMO.

1) Sub payment model-IMO this is still the best payment model.

2) Boats

3) Combat

4) Accountability-Because you only have one character you can make a name for yourself for good or bad.

5) Connection to character-Because you only get one

6)  FFA

7) Full loot

8) Sieges

9) Non-instanced

10) Huge world

11) No tab target

12) Some pretty cool dungeons

13) Weather effects that affect gameplay

For me these are all reasons to love Darkfall.  I understand for others some of these features are reason not to like Darkfall.  Meh...to each their own.

First, not according to OP. According to OP DF:UW is just the 25th choice you should consider, there are 24 better games.

Secondly, DF:UW must doing something HORRIBLY wrong offering so much but having a almost non existinat population.

Think its not a full MMORPG anymore and whats worse it doesnt have the potential to become a MMORPG anymore, as hint for a explanation..

Other than Darkfall I don't think anything is wrong with Darkfall as an MMORPG.  One thing I think scares people away is FFA full loot.  People who are bad that get killed and lose their stuff may quit.  These type of people always want to gain, not lose.  Go up the ladder, but don't look down.  This is ok with me as there are a lot of other games out  already for these people to play.  I think this type of model (Full loot) is fully sustainable...which Darkfall is evident of that fact.

No, its not the full loot per se.

Here is some reason :

1) the loot is junk in DF:UW. (Lack of  complexity in crafting let you produce just junk and find junk items, also since everyone can craft everything everyone can produce the junk)

2) due to classes the lack of choices and freedom makes PvP not being a real MMORPG but more of the the type FPS with preloaded cklasses. (hence the lack of RPG)

Also its not skillbased, you dont have the freedom to choose which skill you want to use and invest into.

3)  there is no reason behind the PvP.  No RP (Role Play) since DF:UW turned off races and their conflict, no rogue play vs city militia since DF:UW turned off  alignement. Player holdings aren't valuable to PvP over.

PvP just fits the current mentality of the tiny playerbase PvP for sake of  PvP without any meaning.

That is just some reasons around combat that doesn't have to do with full loot but explain why DF:UW has just a tiny playerbase.

The list of reasons beside the PvP is even longer....

See EvE for reference, the potential playerbase for FULL LOOT games is 200k - 300k (even more since DF is a ground based game with medievel theme wich should be more popular).. f

Stop blaming full loot and support the game to become what it should have been from start ,..a full sandbox MMORPG like promised and described by AV for a decade.

Weather effects was promised to be at  launch 2009. I can remember even the weather forecast on the main map during beta.

Waves was promised as a DF2010 feature.

It adds to realism and is a intresting and good change, too bad about all the other changes that affected the core gameplay and  ruined DF. This had to be addded to original Darkfall along with the other DF2010 promises and DF would still kicking.

I doubt DF:UW is going somewhere in the next 4-5 years. So much things need to change for it to become a real MMORPG. Classes need to go, so much sand and playerdriven and dynamic content needs to be added.

First and formost they should revert to the original DF mindeset and riop out all the themepark ideas that ruined their game with.

Rust is in alpha and does lots of thinsg better then DF:UW.

Rust = player run servers (whoever runs the server has access to admin commands = cheating)

DF  - no player run servers, servers hosted by Aventurine, no player has access to admin/GM commands

Rust - multiplayer WAN game (due to player hosted servers), no player run server can support 1000+ players sorry

DF - actual MMO, server hosted by game dev in actual datacenter, no player has access to server side tools, etc...

If Rust ever has real hosted servers in a datacenter  - we can talk - right now it's just a mulitplayer WAN game like - DAY Z mod or any game where you can fire up a server and invite your friends.

No thanks.

Highlighted part is the problem with DFO. It doesn't offer any server side content benefit worth for a MMO.

Players cant influence the server on a degree to be worth called MMO. Everything is static (static buildings, static locations, static timers)  to the point multiplayer WAN games are able to offer what DF offers and even in a more immersive way.

DF would be worth if it offers dynamic server side content and player driven gameplay mechanics.  Real housing which you can place your building everywhere, every item craftable, tools to define the rules of your conquested area, dynamic mob spawns and mob behaviour respossive to hunting tactics etc.. (That would mean playing out the strengts of the MMORPG genre and win over "client side" heavy genres like FPS games)  without these DF will have to face competition to Dayz and Rust which it will loose to and not only because Rust and Dayz is free of subscription.

I thought DF:UW is FFA full loot PvP, why is there a need to implement "duell2 fucntionality.

isn't te constant PvP with looting everything on the oponent already good enough?

The answer is no. this shows the current PvP is meaningless and developer try to implement a litle bit of meaning.

But the rest of the game still offers meaningless PvP...and still nothing is done about the real problem of DF, the lack of sandbox.

That is very to doubt.  Like the OP says real spam for example "watch movies online" or "super sales"  ..stay online for hours.

Whats more believable is the word "DF1" triggers modaration.

They delete everything you wriote as a customer if it was about DF classic.

Thats behaviour first shown by $OE  and should  mark by now that they really that bad like the enemys of online gaming per se.
