Other than PST does anyone have the 'schedule' of what keys are going out? Being EST I can hang my PC around easier than some of the EU folks but it would be nice to have SOME inkling as to when to look.

Hopefully now that whatever legal issue are set in stone (or Gold if you prefer) they can make the announcement regarding Open Beta. |

A lot of gaming market strategies include the free trial after the hype of the game is dying down and thy want to entice more folks in. Was I disappointed when I didn't get into Beta after being on the forums for a couple years? Sure. Was I frustrated that they wouldn't allow an update of the DXDiags later in the life of the forum accounts? Yep. Was I slightly bummed when I logged into gamespot a few minutes ago and got the definitive ' You didn't make the PvP weekend' notice? You bet. Did the idea of a semi-open beta bother me? No, I use file planet for other games and have a sub with them so I skated by this issue not that the sub locks me into the OB. But it should be noted that I am disappointed every time I check my lottery tickets too. I made the decision a long time ago to play AoC. I’m bored with the other games out there. I might have decided differently if WAR were coming out in June as it was originally slated, but that ‘just ain’t so’. Playing AoC now was a decision I made. Folks who are ranting negatively have made their decision to not play. Folks who are sitting back to wait for the review (and there will be many of those in the next 30-40 days, yep you betcha) have made their decision. Why keep fighting over it? The ranters aren’t going to change peoples minds. The folks who think AoC will change the world for the better aren’t either (we can call them zealots to be polite). I think it will be a good game but I am taking a chance by paying up front and playing from Day 1. That was my decision. It’s a lottery. Such is life.

As someone pointed out, the words Subscriber and Member are the dividing point for most of the confusion. You aren't given a slot even if you are a Sub (first 50K based on the AoC site post) but at least you are in the running.

*Deep Sigh* Nothing for me...well, I'll keep a bit of hope until Friday night. I assume though that I didn't make it after having checked the link posted earlier. I just get Conan's main squeeze telling me I'll be notified on the 16th if I get in.

Sigh. Nothing yet. |

If your idea was to say, "Everyone calm down and it will get here when it gets here", fine..but I didn't see that in the OP. |

I would suggest to wait and see but don't hope for too much above eye candy. AoC is flavour of the month game with lots of hype attached to it. I am not going to be surprised if number of fans try it, drop it and then move to WAR aiding the same process there.I will be playing AoC and then WAR when it comes out..but that is a fair bit away, even if it's on time in the future. Truthfully, I wanted to play WAR more (marginally more) than AoC and was concerned about dividing m time between the two before WAR got pushed back. That said, Funcom has a good stretch of time to iron out any bugs that do go out with the shelf release. I figure if things which are 'screwy' aren't fixed in 3 months (I don't mean class nerfs for the so called over-powered flavor of the month but rather reall 'issues') then i'll look for greener pastures but otherwise, it will be the long haul for me. |

Anyone know what time today the email notifications are supposed to go out? I probably shouldn't be hopeful about this but curiosity has me securely hooked! Lol

I'm not sure you (the OP) developed your argument enough. What were you trying to say o accomplish? If you aren't' buying it, why did you bother to post at all (other than to troll, perhaps). |

I pre-ordered primarily because I intend to play AoC for a while at least until the next big title comes out ( though I won't play Spellborn). IMO, Funcom is big enough and tough enough to put out a decent game at the start and if there are a couple of months where 'fixes' go in weekly, then so be it. What comes out at the beginning will, not might but WILL have issues here and there. All newborn MMOs do. I made the choice to play the game because I think given a bit of time the game will flesh out to be something really decent to play.
I did have a month of grumbling over the Beta selection (early Beta) when I found you couldn't update your DxDiag file from the old ones (I put mine up 2 years ago and long since updated my PC) as well as the 'more you post in the forums' rule but that was Funcoms decision. If they missed out on a good Beta tester because of those restrictions, their loss.
Also, one question that came up in this thread was about the PVP massing of 15K persons. I haven't read anything about it but my guess would be that they will give you an access code, allow you into 1 or several limited areas (like a very large instance) and allow you to create a character which Funcom's servers will auto-level to 20+. It wouldn't make a lot of sense from them to 'test' PvP and then have 50%+ of their players off exploring maps. Nor would it make sense for them to have players at level 1 roaming around...How much PvP can you do when everyones a 'nothing' waiting to develop. ***This is my opinion only and not based on anything more than logica and past experience with limited Beta tests, so take from it what you will.

What's up with all the push-backs!?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 4/11/08 7:04:10 AM
The hype continues to build regardless of push-backs. Folks do get a bit annoyed after a couple delays and maybe don't follow news with the ravening hunger they did in the beginning but those who are going to play will always hang around and come back in the end. And big marketing campaigns bring in the rest.
There are all sorts of reasons why push-backs occur. The game isn't ready. Staff changes. A better sales plan comes up (better calendar positioning). A competitor releases a big game or addition to their content. Etc. |

Originally posted by zagreosI believe he/she is saying the live release will be 'beta' as the naysayers of the game contend that the game isn't in a releasable condition (or at least isn't a finished, polished version).
If this is not correct I apologize but I doubt if I'm wrong.
And as someone else posted, this has been the way of MMOs since the beginning. At some point the gaming creator decides that they can release to market without losing more than an acceptable percentage of new users based on future patch plans. So folks get to play and the gaming company hopes to meet thier deadlines of 'fixing' bits and pieces. (They are never going to please everyone all the time anyways). |

No, the site was non-functional. It is up and running properly. The way the site read I was wondering about 'the first 15K got in and it's closed'. After reading the post on Funcom's site I went back and refreshed Gampspot a few times.
It's now accepting registrations again.
So what's the percentage change of in getting with the 1-in-15K out of the 500K or so who will register? :P (.03% if anyone cares)

Disappointing. They should announce something like this a few days in advance. Then randomly select email addresses. Oh well. |

Is the term "Sandbox" losing its meaning?

Ryzom was fun and considered primarily a sandbox. |

Still has edge contact issues. In the first screen with robed fellow flying in from the right, the axe (maybe a pick) swinger's arm is through the wing of the summons.
Also, anyone know what the black oil spill looking effect is around the top of the sailboat? I assume it's a spell of some sort and the angle is bad but was curious to find out of anyone has seen this in other shots/videos?
Shadowing looks well matched to the contact points/location of the object causing them. |

Has racism always been a part of MMOs?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 4/03/08 5:39:22 AM
If some folks think that particular races in a game are more feminine or masculine than others and then choose to use derogatory labels for them, to hell with those fools. One could argue that a female 'cow' character (Taurin) is a much more 'butch' version of the female form than the 'standard' so they all must be lesbians. Don't let the idiots in the world guide based on thier own weak opionions (in RL or in a game). If you do, you empower them. You become a follower instead of a leader. You want to be out in front steering, not mindlessly conforming 'in the rear' (pun intended, if you get it). The words 'Sheep' and 'Lemmings' help decribe where I'm going with this.
To the OP. Stay the course! Play the elves! |

Originally posted by vickykol Same for me. RPing was a must as I had a hardcore DM. (He would roll spot checks if you whispered questions across the table saying that local encounters might hear.) Since I joined MMOs, long ago I've RP'd some and avoided Rp in others. Depended on the group I was with and the mood I was in. In some cases I would RP in general and whisper in 'normal' conversation. One thing which was mentioned in the article was the idea of killing mobs which respawned taking away from the 'end' result because there was no real impact on the game 'world'. That's just silly. If that is the type of world you need to play in, go get a copy of NWN or NWN2 and roleplay with the NPCs. MMOs have to be dynamic and refresh themselves to be a persistent world 'for the next guy'. I'm not fond of 'forced' questing driving a game but if it isn't overdone then so be it. Allow temporary insanity or a spell to overcome you to kill those gobbos and move on. The end result is enjoyment on the part of the player in RL and not the saving of a world. If you allow some forced directionality in a game and look at as a 'small investment on a larger return' then your RL end result is much greater. When folks go out to do a quest, what do they expect? Gold, XP and maybe a bauble from the 'quest giver' to say nothing of the random junk dropped in the process of killing/exploring. If you really want to get 'real' with RP, you shouldn't ever collect XP from a quest end reward. Why? If you were a novice swordsperson or spellcaster, you gain XP by doing the right thing to kill critters. You learn by making mistakes, figuring what does work and doing all of that while not getting 'dead'. That is your experience. A quest giver shouldn't be ale to make you more experienced just from returning. Once you get to the quest giver, you are DONE. Get some gold and a shiny trinket or two and head to the tavern (or milk barns for the underaged). I am sure 'hardcore' roleplayers don't bemoan end quest XP which shouldn't be possible to gain. If you can't justify killing a 'mob' because you don't feel it fits your RP persona, don't ever collect end XP rewards (and ESPECIALLY don't be happy about it!) (Okay. Giving the benefit of the doubt might suggest that the quest giver could theoretically offer 'pointers' or give some stirring speech which lifts the hearts of the wanna-be adventurers thereby enriching their lives forever more but you have to MAKE that RP happen in your head.) You'll be able to find problems with EVERYTHING (I know because I have). Instead, try having fun folks. If you can't, move on and find a new hobby.
