And further, the article did not really mention how very gimped you are if you want to be a frequent player without a VIP sub, as compared to playing free. The difference and level of restriction is significant and deserves to be highlighted.

Nothing in life is free if you want the best experience, F2P is only free if you are happy being the gimp.

I don't even say that is wrong, but it AT LEAST deserved mention in the review, as it is a rather glaring flaw. And legitimate to point out: it is almost impossible to advance your toon as a "free player" unless you buy currency. Period. Thus, you either need to pay for the VIP sub, or pay for currency, there is no real way to play for free and get anywhere. And LOL @ comparing this game to EvE. No, just no.

I've got 2 f2p accounts that  are working on their 2nd inner skill.   Haven't bought a thing on either toon.  Please explain why you were unable to do this?

I dont see why they should give you free money for your negligence.

Because when 3rd parties track your buying of gold then hack your account, its on the game company not me.  Lack of security on their real money transaction site isn't something I can counter.   Doesn't matter what you choose for a password either.  A 28 digit alpha numeric pass  word simply means their brute force program has to run for another 5 min.

Game is good.  More polished now than most of the MMOs that are "live".    The game is not pay to win.  Anyone saying that just can't play.   It is canted towards PvP but you can stay plenty busy doing only PvE.   There is the occasional ganking but its not that big a deal.    Anyone looking for more of a sandbox experiance should give it a try.

It's a game based on an IP squarely aimed at pre-adolescent Asian females (ie kids) and as such can't be rated in the same way you would an MMORPG  game like RIFT or WOW. If it does a good job representing the IP and hitting the sweet spot for the fan kids then it does it''s job. Its not meant to be lasting, difficult, challenging, or any of that more than your average Barbie Doll. You can't be serious with some of this review and I am surprised at the lack of tips for parents...

and I'm surprised at the lack of common sense some parents have.  You should not even be considering letting someone under 13 play an online game.  They don't need to socialize outside of school and family, and no matter what controls you think are in place, it's just a dumb decision to allow that, facebook, twitter, etc.

Parents considering mmos for their kids should make a deal with mmorpg.com.  One will stop reviewing games aimed at kids, the other will just stop having them. In my opinion

Thought I would add that for you,

You were spouting an awful lot of what sounded like Conservative American rubbish as though it was Gospel. If you are a fellow Brit I apologise now, but it sounds so painfully sanctimonious its hard to read.

1. You do not now or ever have to right to tell parents how to raise their children

2. Your incredibly narrow views about social media and gaming seem so out of touch as to be laughable in the 21st Centuary. In my humble view.

He was mostly over the top but to rebut you.  When I have to pay for someone elses kids I certainly do have the right to tell parents how to raise them.

--- C-Bills can be earned through game play ---

This right here is the big problem. (And, as usual, the MMORPG.com author skips right over it.)

This is pure, unadulterated Pay to Win.

And the company is not even trying to hide it.

Want upgraded mechs?Full Repairs? Want superior mechs? Buffs? Pay more real world cash. Or Suffer.

I will not play any PvP game that is so unabshedly P2W, and a lot of others won't either.

And I notice that point is mentioned no where in the article.

You seem to have done the same.

The amount of C-bills earned through game play is actually quite considerable. However, if you would prefer not to wait until you have earned a sufficient amount, you can buy your way into a really nice mech, then have it destroyed.

Playing the game for the currency is really the best option in this game, trust me. It will provide enough for repairs and new mechs with a little patience. Oh and skill, don't forget skill, it kind of counts in this title.

More mechs and further customizations can be purchased through the use of C-Bills, the game’s currency. Interestingly, C-Bills can be earned through game play or can be purchased with real-world dollars.

Players can then use earned currency to purchase buffs for mechs. A nice touch that Piranha has added is that buffs purchased by players are account wide and can be used on any mech.

No, I didn't forget that, but maybe in your hurry to flame, you missed it.

The truth is, you cannot say how fast currency will or will not be earned at launch, as adjustments like that are typically made right up until launch, and none of that changes the fact that you can BUY as much currency as you want.

And there is every incentive for the company running a so-called "F2P" game to make players use the cash shop as much as possible, or suffer.

Nor does that change the fact that buffs, new mechs, weapons upgrades, full repairs, and all the rest ARE a significant advantage in gameplay, that you can straight-up buy.

And that is the heart of it: you can buy significant advantages with real cash, in this PvP-centric game (were this a PvE centered game, no one would care much), which is a huge turn off for me, and many others.

Actually you'll be able to buy chassis with real money but to equip it you'll have to play and save up.  Its not in any way play to win but you are right.  You shouldn't play it.

Every single sub-based MMO that has gone off-line has done so because the game failed to maintain enough subscribers to keep it going.

Mostly true except for SWG which was closed because LA wanted to try to force people to ToR.  I think we can all see how well that worked.

Edit: Also, "pure profit revenue?" Lol. They have *just as many costs to uphold as a P2P game, so that's kind of a ridiculous claim there.

The term was coined by the industry itself. It refers to the fact that a hat sold in their cash shop is pure profit, as opposed to the expense of developing playable conent.

In the future, if you are unfamiliar with a term, my advice would be to ask the person what they meant before throwing around words like 'ridiculous' and making snorting judgements based on not knowing.

Its ridiculous.  Someone got paid a lot of money to code in that hat.  Someone needs to keep getting paid a lot of money to make sure all the bugs with that hat get taken care of.  Someone has to pay the people to do that.  So its not  "pure" profit although done correctly it should have a healthy profit margin.  Key being,  done correctly.   Bioware has trouble finding its butt with both hands when it comes to MMOs.

Shame they dont seem to have more salvage and recover /build to this. Looks like the WOT model with matchmaking which is just a basic arena game. I really wanted a true Mech Warrior MMO doesn't look like it will happen.

You want what?   Sit around making 1000 atlas feet to level your mech building skills?  Mechwarrior is about mech combat.  MWO will be about mech combat.  Hopefully about 3 months after launch there will be a meta game for those who want more.  BT/MW really doesn't lend itself to a traditional MMO setting.   Shadowrun on the other hand would.  /hint /hint

Been watching tumble weeds blow across their forum for weeks now.  No Idea of whats happening.

Only reason BF3 and COD3 etc are not on this site and listed is because of the FPSguru, otherwise they would be listed here too because they are just as much mmorpgs as WoT, MWO, Diablo 3, any MOBA etc. Any person thinking that a lobby + gaining XP makes a game a mmorpg is under heavy heavy delusions. They are instanced small scale scenario based multiplayer games. Even GW1 is admitted to not being a mmorpg by the fans of that game, so these lobby shooters with their tiny maps and no open access to the world sure as hell are nowhere near a MMORPG title.

Actually WoT has a persistant world meta game and MWO will have one eventually also.  Just because you can't walk around it in your elf shooting magic missles doesn't mean it doesn't count.

Fortunately I've never played any of the games from either company so I can be blissfully ignorant and hope that Neverwinter will be a really fun game!

Actually the match maker in WoT does fairly well.   The problem is the players who go running off on their own, get smoked, then start crying.  There are sometimes issues but there will always be with any system.  If they had a person hand pick the teams there would still be issues.  Just like there will still be wailing and streams of tears from people who refuse to learn how to play.

Server crashes were pretty rare.  40 on 40 in Restuss did cause some lag issues and some disconnects for people with less optimal connections.    Right before the killing announcement we regularly had regular fights with around 200 players and while it got really choppy, the fights got done and everyone got all the points they wanted.  Generally on multiple characters.  I'd love to see a SWG reboot but the suits would never admit that they might have made a mistake by sponsoring that pile of vomit that is ToR.

They did it as a personal affront to you.  Yes you are so important that the universe pauses repeatedly to see what you are saying about each and every subject you know nothing of.

"I speak from my WoW experience, but as anyone who played that game knows the questing style changed dramatically between Burning Crusade and Wrath and finally Cataclysm from mostly picking up kill quests with rare questlines to almost completly storyline progression, truely a theme ride MMO.

And it seemed fun at first. But the problem is that style of questing has zero replayability and that's a bad thing in a MMO. People played WoW for years because they could reroll another character, another faction and have a different experience picking new zones, new quests each time and just grinding if they felt like it."

And this differ's from killing 10 bunny rabbits exactly how? Your forgetting that at least for the story arc''s the questlines will differ somewhat. I dunno why people such as yourself want to point out the obvious and call it a flaw of some sort. There will be quests and that's not always a bad thing. If you don't want to play it, that's fine too. I could care less.

I may hate the game but I'm going to give it a shot. I realize what it is. It isn't exactly what I'd hoped for but I'm ready for a sci fi setting for a change. I'm honestly sick of fantasy to the point of puking. Everyone seems to be on the TOR hate bandwagon for some reason. It's not like guild wars is doing anything massively different and the differences it does have I don't personally like. I'm not going to bash it though. Just because I don't like it dosen't mean others won't.

TOR isn't doing anything dramaticlaly different, yes we all realize that. Explain to me though how your supposed to get around questing though. Would you rather have...none? Personally I hated in EQ when it said you would get quest exp but really you couldn't even see the bar move. If you don't want to do quests, then don't do them. WoW shows that people will do quests and the treadmill for gear for a long time though. /shrug

To answer a question. Yes, I'd rather have a sandbox SW game similar to galaxies but that's not what it is. it's going to be similiar to WoW with roots back to EQ. It's not like anyeone at Bioware lied to you about that.

Hey Nasja.  I see you found your way here after all things SWG got put on a security hold yet again.  Welcome :-)

If it ends up like EVE in terms of lack of content, I won't end up playing it. As much as I love the WoD setting, I couldn't stand EVE.  There's a difference between giving your players freedom and being too damn lazy to develop content.

If by content you mean,   "Please tell me what to do because otherwise I'll just sit here and spin in circles",  I hope not.  I'm tired of games made for people too lazy to actually play.  Go watch a movie if you don't want to have to do anything.

I'm guessing he's never crafted old or new school.   Old school =  involved crafting that had an actual purpose.  New School = collect a million non stated resources,  hit the go button and craft 10,000 useless widgets.  When you are bored go grind some gear you will actually use.

In most mmorpg's that I've played around with lack a very good storyline, mostly the martial arts/korean mmo's, and some of the new one's lack more of an important storyline to cast your character around. This is why I don't like most of the MMO because of this.

What I recommand for a good storyline is do what most single player games tend to do if your making a linear storyline, or you can try to do what Lord of the Rings: Online tries to do but add in cutscenes, CGI, and other things that help drawns me and other people into the game. Also unlike most of the mmo, when they do cutscenes, they forgot about voice actor's and also the ability of my player to speak with a voice then plain text. This is what don't draw me into mmo is that most of the text is not in voice acting, instead just plain old boring text. If you want to make a storyline strong mmo, add in plenty of cutscenes, CGI, Voice acting and the ability for my player to also have it's own voice. Take an element of Saint's Row 2, Final Fantasy X, The Force Unleash and combine them into the genre of your choice.

I also like it when I am limited to access to other places until I complete a certain storyline element, like what Amnesia: The Dark Descent has done, they limit you access until you completed several ways to get access to a certain key materials to get out, then you noticed that the place that your in starts to turn.

Sounds to me like you'd love Netflix or Blockbuster.  They have movies are exactly like what you describe.

/agree  the current trend to remove all choice and force every player to do the same thing as every other player really makes me worry about how dumb the younger generation is.

even though I didn't bother to read all this. I did skim through it,

Story is the driving force behind this game, and probably one of the best parts about it. If you don't like story than maybe reconsider playing it?

I don't care about a single player sequal. This is a MMO game with an engaging story line. The difference in single player Kotor and MMO kotor is just the fact I cannot play with thousands of other people.

This is the perfect setting for this game and could be a risky experiment at trying to bring a quality MMO to the market.

Time to stop whining about it and start thanking bioware for taking these kinds of risks to bring you an enjoyable game, instead of half assed throwing something together and forgetting about story.

Single player, lead me by the nose, and instance it all isn't an MMO.   While there may be thousands of people on your server.  You won't be instancing with them so it doesn't really matter does it.
